DECA’s college and business partners can help you and your members THRIVE! Dear Advisors, First, welcome back and THANK YOU for being a DECA advisor! As a parent, I know how important having good teachers is to our children’s academic and personal development. As DECA’s National Advisory Board (NAB) Chair, I have an additional appreciation for the extra work you do to accelerate students’ academic and personal success by engaging DECA’s Comprehensive Learning Program, including the NAB partnerships. Often times, the members of the NAB also feel like we have two jobs: our “real job,” the one our organizations’ pay us to do every day, and our “DECA job,” the one that makes our “real job” so much richer and more enjoyable. Of course, as you know well, we all have to justify our “DECA jobs” as supporting the goals and objectives of our “real jobs.” The NAB is committed to the idea that, working together, not only can we justify our “DECA jobs,” we can also accomplish our individual and shared goals, deliver greater value to our organizations and help DECA members Thrive! As you may or may not know, most of DECA’s NAB partners fall into one of three major categories: • Recruitment – employment and college and university partners • Marketing – school-based enterprise suppliers, fundraising companies and advertisers • Mission – foundations and associations With that said, no NAB partnership falls exclusively into one category. While each NAB partner approaches DECA from its unique position, many of us share crosscategory values in our relationships with DECA and we all support DECA’s overall mission of preparing emerging leaders and entrepreneurs. The reason that we meet as a board is to share our unique and common experiences and best practices and offer DECA suggestions for improving our partnerships and its overall programming. I share that with you, because ultimately you are as much our partner 2
in this as anyone else. If we are not successful in connecting with you and your members, we are not successful in our partnerships. Like the NAB shares unique and common experiences, best practices and thoughts for improving our partnerships, we hope you will give our partnerships that kind of consideration and let us and the DECA staff know how doing so will improve our overall programming. A great way to start this process is to look at the NAB partners’ pages on the DECA website at http://www.deca.org/ partners. Each of these pages identifies the philosophy of the partnership, the resources that are available to you and your members and contact information for questions and comments. Even if you’ve been to the NAB partners’ pages before, I encourage you to go back, and have your members look as well. As frequently as your programs change, our partnerships change, so there may be new opportunities for you and your members. Additionally, DECA is frequently adding new partners, so you’ll want to keep abreast of those new relationships. If we all do a little more to understand our unique objectives and how they are served by our shared values, we will undoubtedly strengthen the work that we do together and help everyone Thrive! Sincerely,
Roger Glenn Chair, DECA’s National Advisory Board SVP Human Resources, Gordmons <For more information about DECA’s National Advisory Board, contact John Fistolera, Assistant Executive Director— Corporate and External Affairs at DECA Inc., at john_fistolera@deca.org.

HOW DO I TAP THE NAB RESOURCES TO SUPPORT MY CLASSROOM? > Visit the NAB page at http://www. deca.org/partners/ and see which companies have stores, services or programs in your community. > Determine which NAB companies best fit your classroom goals. > Print those NAB companies’ pages and contact their local representative to schedule a meeting. If you cannot determine who a company’s local representative is or have any questions about the partnership, contact the designated DECA staff person for assistance.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AFTER CONTACTING MY LOCAL NAB REPRESENTATIVE? > You should expect a return call and an appointment. Remember, the NAB partnership only works if it works at the local level — in both directions. If you have any problem contacting your local representative, please contact DECA staff. > You should expect to return the value that your local partner provides such as helping place students for employment or trying products in your store and for chapter sales projects. > You should expect this to become an ongoing, local partnership.

We’re looking for social media correspondents from all of our reader groups—student members, advisors, business partners, alumni. We encourage each chapter and association to appoint a social media correspondent—perhaps your vice president of communications. The role of the social media correspondent is simple. We are looking for social media correspondents to do two things. First, tell us a story in a short article similar to a blog post. Suggested topics include chapter happenings, how your chapter conducted a successful fundraiser, secrets to membership recruitment, advocacy activities, outstanding local partnerships with businesses and so much more! You’ll submit these to our DECA Direct community manager for review, editing and posting. Supporting photos are encouraged. Social media correspondents are expected to contribute at least one article per month. Second, share DECA news through your social media outlets. Tweet about us. Share our stories on Facebook. Social media correspondents receive a virtual badge to designate their special role. Plus, they get to be in the spotlight. We will need a short bio and portrait photo to include in each posting. There will also be opportunities to serve as “live” correspondents at DECA conferences and events. <www.deca.org/page/socialmedia
HANG OUT WITH US
Join us on our virtual couch as we host a series of Google+ Hangouts designed to engage DECA members and advisors in conversations about topics such as building membership, using DECA’s chapter campaigns, chapter promotional ideas, using DECA in the classroom and so much more! Each Google+ Hangout will be hosted by a DECA staff member who will source experts—such as advisors and members from high performing chapters—to share their stories. While we can only include up to 10 expert panelists, all Google+ Hangouts will be broadcast live so that unlimited viewers may watch and ask questions. The hangouts will also be archived on the DECA page on Google+. Make sure to add us to your circle on Google+ so you can view the upcoming DECA hangouts. <http://gplus.to/decainc
