DECA advisors are often the “heroes in the eyes of their students,” and DECA is pleased to introduce the latest edition of Be a Hero, the ultimate advisor guidebook. Included within this chapter packet, this revamped, 28-page resource discusses how DECA connects to curriculum, integrates DECA’s new chapter strategy modules and provides ideas on using DECA’s competitive events in the classroom, in addition to an overview of DECA, the advisor’s role, DECA programs, gaining support and cool ideas.

INTEGRATING DECA INTO THE CLASSROOM

After a slight error in the numbering of the sections, DECA has posted updated event guidelines for the following events at deca.org.

• Community Service Project • Creative Marketing Project • Entrepreneurship Promotion Plan • Financial Literacy Promotion Plan • Learn and Earn Project • Independent Business Plan • Fashion Merchandising Promotion Plan • Sports and Entertainment Promotion Plan In most cases, the final roman numeral for the optional appendix was mislabeled. For the Learn and Earn Project and Independent Business Plan, the last two roman numerals were mislabeled.

Please make sure your members download the new guidelines on deca.org and assign the numbering of the sections accordingly.

PERFORMANCE INDICATOR LISTS UPDATED

Understanding DECA’s performance indicator lists will enable members to prepare for DECA’s Competitive Event Program.

Performance indicator lists have been updated to assist members and advisors as they navigate through each list.

Key changes include: • Identification of tiers within performance indicator lists.

• Section dividers that identify which events the performance indicators pertain to.

The Business Administration Core is the foundation of DECA’s Competitive Events Program (Tier 1). As events become more specialized, they are associated with a career cluster (Tier 2) and possibly a career pathway (Tier 3).

At each tier, content becomes more specialized. Within each tier, each performance indicator is assigned a curriculum planning level on a continuum of instruction ranging from simple to complex.

DECA mostly uses performance indicators at the prerequisite, career-sustaining and specialist curriculum planning levels. The tiers do not necessarily indicate levels of rigor, but rather a progression of knowledge and skills from a broad career interest to a very specialized career focus.
