New! Beacon Municipal Center and Swimming Pool to Open in 2014 he new Beacon Municipal Center at 420 W. Trinity Pl. will house a new police facility, a renovated Ebster gym, an Active Living and Recreation Center and the central office for City Schools of Decatur. When the center opens this year, residents and visitors can enjoy a swim in the renovated Ebster Pool, which will have a new bathhouse and more lanes to accommodate recreational and competitive swimming. History fact: This location once housed Herring Street School (1913-1956), Beacon Elementary School and Trinity High School, which were schools for African Americans in the Decatur community. Beacon, which means lighthouse, was chosen as a name by the student body.

Team Decatur and Kaiser Permanente 5K Kickoff July 15 • 6-8 pm Decatur Recreation Center 231 Sycamore St. Decatur is once again partnering with Kaiser Permanente and Jeff Galloway for the fifth annual KP Corporate Run/Walk Kick-off. Join us for a health and fitness event featuring local businesses and offering information on getting and keeping fit as well as drawings for prizes and information on registering for the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk Sept. 11. There will also be opportunities to participate in various types of exercise, so wear your walking or running shoes. This year marks Decatur’s fifth year of participation in the fall event. Team members receive a free Team Decatur T-shirt to wear to the race when they register for the KP Corporate Run/Walk. ecatur Active Living offers a variety of summer aquatic programs. Ebster, Glenlake and McKoy pools will be open from May 24 through Labor Day, Sept. 1. See page 4 for regular and post-season hours. Pools are managed by Dynamo Pool Management, Inc. For more information on general pool operations, swim lessons, pool rentals, the Gators swim team or to make suggestions regarding aquatic programming, call Jabari Cole, Tennis/Aquatic Services, 404-377-7231. Ebster Pool is brand new for the 2014 swim season with eight lanes, a new splash pad, and a renovated pool house. Home of the Decatur Gators Swim Team, Ebster is on W. Trinity Place at the intersection with Atlanta Avenue, next to the Beacon Hill Center, which is under construction.
Glenlake Pool • 1121 Church St. • 404-378-7671 Glenlake is Decatur’s largest and most active pool. It has a new PVC liner and new pump room equipment along with a new sand filter. Glenlake offers a snack area, patio, shade shelter and shallow water for small children. The pool is one block north of Commerce Drive.
McKoy Pool • 534 McKoy St. • 404-378-8084 McKoy Pool is a popular spot for young families. It has a zero entry (beach entry) access pool making it easier for elderly and handicapped residents to use, bubbler features to entertain younger swimmers, and dedicated lap lines that can be scheduled for adultonly lap swimming. Decatur Pool Guidelines • Large floats or inner tubes are not acceptable because they obstruct the view of the lifeguards. • Water guns, throwing toys or other items that may cause harm are prohibited. Pouring toys and small floating toys for tots are allowed. Safety of items will be determined by the pool staff. • Children may only wear coastguard-approved PFDs with parental supervision. • Patrons swimming with children who wear diapers must use leak-proof baby swimsuits or swim diapers. Swim diapers will be available at the front desk. • Parents are encouraged to accompany their children to the pool and to supervise them closely while they are in the water.
They are also asked to discuss pool safety rules with their children and encourage respect for the rules and staff. All children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by someone over the age of 14 to be admitted into the pool. • Shallow end of the pool is reserved for children 5 years and younger with an accompanying adult. • No cotton t-shirts or shorts allowed, as cloth fibers clog the pool filters. Group Policies

roups of 12 or more must have a reservation to assure adequate supervision and prevent overcrowding of the pool. To make a reservation contact Aquatics Director Kyle Morton for approval of swim time and an appointment to complete a Group Swim Agreement. Decatur Active Living and Children & Youth Services programs have priority scheduling for group swimming. Call 404-377-7231 for more information. • Youth groups (day care, camps, etc.) must have a 1-to-12 ratio of supervisors/counselors to youth.

Host your neighborhood meetings at Decatur pools. Meetings can be held during the evenings on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. For more information or to make a reservation call 404-377-7231.

July 4th Pool Celebration – Celebrate Decatur July 4 • 3-4:30 pm Celebrate with games, fun and much more. Show your colors by dressing up in red, white and blue. Decatur pools will be decorated.
Special Event Days Starting in June, the aquatics staff will have “Special Event Days” at each of the pools throughout the summer. The event dates and times will be posted a week in advance at each pool. Make sure your family does not miss out on the fun!

To rent a pool 76-100 $300/$350 you must fill out a reservation form at least two weeks prior to the rental and pay for the party. Gators Attack the Water! Decatur Gators Swim Team • 4-18 yrs Each child must be able to swim 25 meters of either freestyle or backstroke. Children who cannot swim 25 meters should be enrolled in Mini Gators. The goal of the Mini Gators program is to teach strokes and proper swimming technique so that members can graduate to the Gators swim team before the end of the season. Mini Gators enrollment is strictly limited to 40 participants. If you are unsure whether your child can swim 25 meters, then they should join Mini Gators. A swim test will be available prior to registration. You may also contact Beth Costello at decaturgators@gmail.com to request a swim test.
Mini Gators • 4-12 yrs The multiple-child discount does not apply to the Mini Gators program since space is limited. For swimmers who want to join the Gators but aren’t able to swim 25 meters, we offer the Mini Gator team. This session will help the swimmer get ready to compete. Participants will not swim in meets until they are able to swim 25 meters and are comfortable in deep water, but they will be able to attend meets and cheer on the Gators. Children must not be afraid of the water and must have no problems placing their entire heads under water. Children must be independent swimmers with the ability to do a basic freestyle. Dog paddling is not considered independent swimming.
Gator Parents – Volunteers Needed!
The Gators need volunteers as timers, judges and scorekeepers. A parents meeting will be held prior to the first meet at Ebster Pool. In case of rain, the meeting will be held in Ebster Gym, 404 W. Trinity Place. For additional Gator information, call 404-377-7231.

Swim Camps Designed for Healthy Habits
A
t swim camp, children can improve their swimming techniques and meet new friends. All camps are led by water safety instructors, who balance instruction with games and free swim. Instructor/camper ratio is 1:6. The fee includes instructor, supplies and snacks.
Tadpoles • 4–6 yrs This water adjustment camp is for children who are unfamiliar with the water and may have a fear of swimming. Basic skills such as going underwater, kicking and arm movement will be covered. Fun games, encouraging instruction, and free swim time with other children in the group will establish positive attitudes towards swimming.
Minnows • 7–12 yrs Children will learn the basic skills of swimming and water safety. Kicking and breathing techniques will be refined. Basic freestyle, breaststroke, and backstroke will be covered.
Afternoon Group Lessons

ot a little one who is eager to start playing sports? Decatur Active Living offers these introductory instructional programs for girls and boys ages 3-6. Look for complete registration details in the At-a-Glance table below.

Li’l Kickers Soccer • 3-5 yrs
League Soccer 6-11 yrs
A four-week introductory course designed to develop basic soccer skills. Space is limited. Registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Aug. 9.
Children ages 6-11 will get a kick out of soccer this fall! Coed teams are divided by age groups, 6-7, 8-9 and 10-11 leagues. All levels and skill ranges are welcome. Participants will have a one-hour practice during the week, beginning the week of Sept. 8. Games will be played on Saturdays starting Sept. 20. Registration begins Aug. 9.
Li’l Lax • 4-6 yrs A four-week introductory course designed to develop basic lacrosse skills. Players learn to scoop, cradle and pass while also gaining knowledge of how to play the game of lacrosse. No equipment is required. Players will receive a lacrosse stick and ball, which they can keep upon conclusion of the clinic. Registration begins Aug. 9.
Mini Soccer • 4-6 yrs Participants have one 30-minute practice and one 30-minute game each week. Everyone gets to play. All games and practices are on Saturday at Glenlake Park. Note: Four year olds must have completed one season of Li’l Kickers.
Youth Flag Football /Middle School Flag Football • 5-12 yrs Decatur Active Living will offer a six-week Flag Football program in the fall for boys and girls ages 5-12. The 5-7 league will enjoy two weeks of basic introduction to the game. Players will then be divided into teams. The 8-12 year olds will have one practice a week. The 5-7 year olds will put their skills to work in weeks 3-6 with a 20-minute practice followed by a 40-minute game. Practices will be held at local fields and games will be held on the Jones Boys and Girls Club field (450 East Lake Dr.). Registration begins Aug. 9.

Decatur’s 2014-2015 After-School Programs: Adventures in STEAM In the 2014-15 school year Decatur’s after-school programs will explore a theme based on STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. The Children and Youth Services Division (CYS) offers eight after-school programs in all five K-3rd elementary schools, the Decatur Recreation Center, Fifth Avenue 4/5 Academy, and Renfroe Middle School. The programs offer age-appropriate, enriching activities that take learners outside the classroom to explore interests and experiences that promote individual development. The choice-based program format allows for youth-directed experiences through a range of offerings intended to enhance healthy lifestyle choices, socioemotional learning, creative expression, technology competencies, and a range of other 21st-century skills. Decatur operates three tiers of afterschool programming – Animal Crackers for K-3rd graders, Whiz Kids for 4th/5th graders, and Project REAL for 6th-8th graders. The

programs are developed in collaboration with City Schools of Decatur, with coordinated curriculum related to technology, tutoring for students needing additional academic support, fine arts and enrichment activities, physical activity, healthy food choices, and socio-emotional development.
Programs Animal Crackers provides age-appropriate activities in an open choices environment including daily opportunities for enrichment, social skills building, and physical activity. The Whiz Kids program at Fifth Avenue 4/5 Academy promotes higher-level skills and activities appropriate for 4th and 5th graders. At Whiz Kids our 4th and 5th graders have ample opportunity to take leadership roles and challenge themselves
to try a wide variety of new things. Project REAL (Recreation, Enrichment, Athletics and Learning) at Renfroe Middle School engages youth in group and individual experiences relevant to the middle school experience. Project REAL offers a range of choices from technology to sports to food projects to group activities of all sorts especially designed for middle schoolers. Fridays feature youth-directed activities, service learning projects, and special events. Program sessions cover 20 school days.
Parent Orientation Parent orientation for after-school programs will be held on Tuesday, July 29, 5:30 p.m., at Decatur Recreation Center. Join us to meet site directors and administrative staff members, receive a Parent Handbook and a program overview. All after-school programs open on the first day of school.

Lottery Spin and Registration Lottery registration for the 2014-15 school year closed on April 25. The lottery spin is scheduled for May 2. Families may check their registration status online via WebTrac. Children and Youth Services will contact families by May 17 to confirm registration status.
Missed the Lottery? If you missed lottery registration, open registration begins May 12 at 10 am. New households will need to complete and return an After School 2014-15 registration form for each child in order to generate a household identification number in our registration system. Forms available at decaturga.com/cys on the After School Programs page. Forms should be returned to the Decatur Recreation Center, 231 Sycamore St., next to the public library. Please allow five business days for processing new household paperwork. A household ID number is needed for use of the online registration system (WebTrac) at decaturga.com/webtrac.
Waiting Lists In recent years, the elementary school sites (K-3 and 4-5) have filled up before the start of school. If space is available, K-3rd graders are eligible for their school-based Animal Crackers program as well as the Decatur
Recreation Center Animal Crackers program at 231 Sycamore St. When programs are full, children will be placed on a waiting list for the desired program(s). If space is available at the DRC program, children may attend DRC Animal Crackers and also remain on the waitlist for the desired school-based program. As spaces open during the course of the year, CYS will contact families in the order in which they appear on the waitlist for the respective program. Please make sure CYS has current contact information for your family. To be added to the waiting list you must: 1. Complete steps to generate a household ID number in RecTrac through the Decatur Recreation Center (original forms only please; proof of residency required for resident fees). 2. Use WebTrac or contact CYS or Active Living staff to add your child to the desired waiting lists. We have no way to anticipate chances of gaining entry to programs based on waiting lists. Enrollment patterns differ by school and shift substantially from year to year. CYS will contact you when space becomes available for your child/ren in an after-school program.
All-Day Camps CYS offers all-day activities for children grades K-8 on teacher work days and week-long breaks. This allows parents to be at work and gives children a day with friends from other after-school sites. Children not enrolled in the after-school program are eligible to attend all-day camps. Registration is limited.
Animal Crackers Camp Grades K-3 Children (K-3) meet and play at Decatur Recreation Center, 7:30 am-6 pm. Each day has a special theme. Children bring a lunch from home. Drinks and snacks are provided. Fee/ Nonresident Fee: $35/40 per day
Big Kids Camp • Grades 4-8 Students (4th-8th) meet at Decatur Recreation Center and proceed on a field trip or participate in a service learning project that day, 7:30 am-6 pm. Lunch and a snack are included in the cost of camp. Fee/Nonresident Fee: $45/$50 per day
Decatur offers more than 100 different camp sessions this summer and spaces are filling up fast! Camps take place during the day and are offered in half- and full-day sessions. Extended hours are available for an additional fee at select camps. To plan your summer, pick up a copy of the March 2014 Playbook or download it from the city’s website via the Playbook link on the Active Living or Children and Youth Services pages of the site. Summer Day Camps include McKoy Safari Camp for rising K-5th graders, Glenlake Discovery Camp for rising K-5th graders, Ebster Explorer Camp for rising K-5th graders, and D.R.E.A.M. Camp for rising 6th-8th graders. Summer Special Interest Camps focus on a particular area of interest for the entire camp day. These include sports, aquatics and enrichment camps offered throughout the summer. Some examples of interest areas include tennis, fencing, basketball, football, chess, sculpture, Spanish language and culture, Lego robotics, cartooning, photography, Shakespeare, and much, much more. Special Interest Camps require a minimum enrollment. Camps are cancelled two weeks before the start date if enrollment requirements are not met. Be sure to register by May 17 to ensure that your favorite June camps will happen this summer! Fees for all May and June camps are due in full by May 3. Explore the adult fitness zone, which offers a variety of exercise equipment.

918 S. McDonough St. (Griffin Circle) Located across the street from the College Heights Early Childhood Learning Center, this greenspace offers a variety of native plants, a winding path and benches for sitting.
534 McKoy St. McKoy Park has a nine-acre neighborhood recreational area with a 330-foot baseball field that is fenced and lighted. There is a picnic pavilion with restrooms, a concession/scoring building, and the renovated McKoy Pool, which has zero-depth entry and water features. The park also has a basketball court, a playground area, a greenspace for games, picnic tables with grills and trash receptacles, an outdoor classroom with seat walls, and a skate park. There are two separate parking areas. Concrete walkways connect the site features. McKoy is home to Decatur High School’s varsity baseball team and the Decatur Active Living adult softball programs.

404 W. Trinity Place (Under construction) A large multipurpose field is a key feature of this five-acre neighborhood recreational facility. There is a pool house with swimming pool, basketball courts and a playground area. Recent additions include a small pavilion with tables and grills. Decatur Active Living youth sports and Decatur High School athletic programs use the field. The park shares a parking lot with Ebster Center and City Schools of Decatur.

Adair Street This four-acre neighborhood recreational facility is home to the Mary Gay House, Swanton House and a historic log cabin, and is the site of Decatur’s annual Heritage Festival. There are numerous trees throughout the park and picnic tables with trash receptacles available for public use. There is also a playground area and a dog park. Adair Park is a beautiful addition to the Swanton Heights and Lenox Place communities. Street parking only.

The fees for Glenlake Pavilion are $100/$50 (Decatur resident) for the first two hours and $20/$12.50 (Decatur resident) for each additional hour. Decatur Beach Party
Friday, June 20 • 5-11 pm Decatur brings in 60 tons of sand and turns the square into a beach for this annual event. Activities include children’s boardwalk games, face painting and more. Tickets are $7 in advance at decaturdba.com or $10 at the gate. Children 18 and under, $5. All children’s activities are included in the price of admission.
Decatur Book Festival
Friday, Aug. 29-Sunday, Aug. 31 The annual AJC Decatur Book Festival is the largest independent book festival in the country and one of the five largest overall. Since its launch nine years ago, more than 1,000 world class authors and hundreds of thousands of festivalgoers have crowded the historic downtown Decatur Square and Recreation Center to enjoy book signings, author readings, panel discussions, an interactive children’s area, parades and much more. Lightning often strikes outside of heavy rain and may occur as far as 10 miles from any rainfall.
