City News Environmental Sustainability Board:

Keep It Cool in Decatur

W

hile enjoying outdoor activities, you may have observed past summertime temperatures in the city appeared to be hotter than in nearby rural towns. Research has shown that metro Atlanta residents experience temperatures up to 10 degrees warmer, more intense storms, and more frequent 90-degree days in the summer than surrounding rural areas. Scientists describe this modification of local climate as the urban heat island (UHI) effect. The UHI effect is a localized land-use impact created by the loss of greenspace, tree canopy, and vegetation to impervious, heat absorbing buildings, roads, parking lots, sidewalks, and roofing materials. Additional sources contributing to the heat island effect include heat generated by air conditioning and refrigeration exhaust, vehicle traffic, and the restriction of air circulation by higher buildings. The UHI effect is responsible for intensifying summertime temperatures, resulting in discomfort and health threats such as dehydration, heat stroke, exhaustion, asthma, and other respiratory illnesses. The most effective strategy a city can use to combat the urban heat island effect is to protect and restore tree canopy. The American Forests organization recommends that all cities east of the Mississippi River maintain a tree canopy of 40 percent. In 2016, Decatur had a tree canopy of 46.2 percent. A healthy tree canopy produces significantly cooler days and nights through shading and evapotranspiration. Trees are most effective in reducing temperatures when they are strategically placed and distributed near roads, sidewalks, parking areas, buildings and homes. Mature trees located on the west side of homes and buildings provide maximum shade and significantly reduce the amount of energy required to cool buildings, resulting in lower cooling and heating bills for the homeowner. In addition to planting and maintaining healthy tree covers, cities and residents can mitigate the heat island effect by: • Supporting the use of green roofs and cool roofs. Green roofs (like the one atop Fire Station 1, pictured below) shade the roof surface and increase evapotranspiration while cool roofs are made up of highly reflective materials that reflect incoming solar energy. • Planting vegetation such as rain gardens and vegetative swales near homes, sidewalks, roads, and buildings. The North McDonough streetscape is a good example. • Promoting energy efficiency by mandating The “green” roof high-performance residential and commerat Fire Station 1 cial building standards. • Increasing greenspace in the city. In Decatur, 22 acres of greenspace at the United Methodist Children’s Home property will be conserved, and 16 trees were transplanted from the Hampton Inn site to Glenlake Park. • Reducing use of combustion engine vehicles through projects that increase walkability, bikeability, and the use of electric vehicles. Walk and Roll Star Ann Abramowitz Decatur resident Ann Abramowitz is a devoted walker (and runner) who walks two miles each way to work at Emory most days and averages about 44 miles per week. City News Renfroe Students Serve the Community

T

he Renfroe Middle School PTA has come up with a new, innovative fundraising idea – the Serve-a-Thon. This activity is similar to the Math-a-thon at F.AVE and the Read-a-thon at K-3 schools but is focused on community service. It offers kids the experience of serving others with their peers in a variety of settings. From Feb. 28 through March 14, Renfroe students and their families volunteered in their community – either at an organized volunteer event or by simply helping a neighbor, friend or family member in need at no charge. Students sought pledges for their volunteer time. All funds raised benefitted Renfroe PTA-supported programs and events, including innovative teacher grants, Rock Eagle and other educational field trips, cultural experiences like concerts, art shows and dances, and the 8th grade end-ofyear celebrations. Funds will also be used to show teachers and staff how much they are appreciated and valued. The Serve-a-Thon allowed Renfroe students to invest their energy in serving others and creating an even stronger culture of caring among the students and community. Renfroe students participated in more than 40 volunteer projects, logged more than 300 volunteer hours, and raised more than $15,500. Feedback from students, parents and teachers indicates that everyone had a great time volunteering and appreciated the opportunity to raise money in a more meaningful way.

ver heard of contra dancing? If you haven’t experienced it, you might be surprised at how much fun you can have on a Friday night in Decatur. Contra dancing is unlike anything else, and once you try it, you might just get hooked. The dance is held every Friday night at the Decatur Recreation Center. It is family-friendly, open to all ages, and is hosted by the Chattahoochee Contra Dancers, a nonprofit volunteer organization, to bring people of all ages and backgrounds together for this high-energy, social dance. A 30-minute beginner lesson at 7:30 p.m. sharp gives you the skills you need to get started, then dancing continues from 8 to 11 p.m. A different band plays each week, and people come from all over metro Atlanta, and points beyond, to dance. No partner is necessary. Admission is $10 per person (students, $5). Be sure to wear casual attire, and comfortable, soft-soled shoes. Details at contradance.org.

The spirit of what Gardner started through his columns continues through this foundation and its biennial Atlanta conference. For more information visit gathering4gardner.org.

School News Step Up for Your Teachers This Spring

E

ach spring, the Decatur Education Foundation supports City Schools of Decatur and its teachers by offering the community a chance to Step Up for Teachers through online personal tributes. During April and May, community members may honor a CSD teacher, administrator, or school support staff member with a gift and a short note of gratitude. DEF notifies the honored person with an invitation to read the tribute on the DEF website. In addition, a Step Up for Teachers yard sign will be delivered to each donor. Funds raised during the Step Up campaign support teacher innovation grants that are awarded two times every school year and allow teachers to find innovative ways to engage students and elevate learning. Grants awarded this school year include: • Alternative seating options in schools across the district that allow students to

learn in ways that meet their individual needs. Desk cycles, exercise balls, wobble stools, and stability cushions have improved overall classroom focus and increased productivity. • Funds to invest in the DHS Math Club and Math Team that will allow students to explore their love of math and represent the school in regional and national math competitions. • A CatchBox – a soft, throwable student

microphone that allows even the most soft-spoken third-grader at Westchester Elementary to participate in group discussions. • A musical notation board for the music classroom at Winnona Park Elementary so students can see the melodic phrases they are learning to hear. • The portable language lab at F.AVE now has high-tech headphones with microphones so every Spanish student at the school can practice their speaking and listening skills at their own pace. • Rain boots and rain jackets for pre-k students at College Heights to ensure they can have valuable outdoor time, even in wet weather. Yard signs for graduating DHS seniors are also available through DEF. To honor your teachers and your graduating seniors, visit decatureducationfoundation.org/stepup.
