Decatur Earns 2018 ‘All-America City’ Honors

T

he National Civic League named Decatur one of 10 AllAmerica Cities at its annual meeting held in June in Denver. Decatur earned the honor in recognition of its work toward inclusive civic engagement, addressing critical issues and creating stronger connections between residents, businesses, nonprofits, and government leaders. Applicant cities submitted their community-wide work on equity and civic engagement and three projects for consideration. Finalist communities presented their projects and their communities to a jury. Decatur’s presentation demonstrated the results of the Better Together Community Action Plan, the Police department’s intentional focus on community engagement and training, and the I Am Decatur photo portraits and stories that represent the diverse backgrounds and lifestyles of community members. To learn more about these projects visit: • Better Together: decaturga.com/better-together-communityaction-plan • Community Policing: decaturga.com/pdstrategicplan • I Am Decatur: iamdecatur.com

City News City Adopts New Sidewalk Requirements

O

n July 1 the city began requiring that all new structures and substantial improvements provide a sidewalk and landscape buffer. A substantial improvement includes any combination of repairs, reconstruction, alterations or improvements to a building where the cost of the construction exceeds 50 percent of the fair market value of the structure prior to the improvement. The table below shows the required sidewalk and landscape minimum widths. For streets that are subject to multiple requirements, the wider streetscape applies. The city can provide an administrative adjustment to one or both of the minimum widths for single family residential, multiple family residential, professional office, or institutional zoning districts under the following conditions: 1. When the cost of the sidewalk installation exceeds 25 percent of the total project cost due to project scope as well as site factors, including but not limited to stormwater infrastructure, topography, and existing utilities. 2. To provide compatibility with existing conditions on adjacent properties. 3. To preserve existing trees and landscape materials in the landscape and sidewalk zone. 4. To provide continuity with planned public improvements. Establishing this requirement as part of the development process for renovations, additions, and new construction will help to expand the sidewalk network throughout the city, specifically in many of the single-family neighborhoods and along Safe Routes to School routes that currently lack sidewalks. The new sidewalk requirement supports Principle D, Task 14 A, of the Strategic Plan, which includes the longstanding goal of having at least one sidewalk on every street in Decatur. 4 | Decatur Focus • JULY / AUGUST 2018

City News Keep Sidewalks Clear, Safe, and Clean

High School Students

When sidewalks are overgrown with residential landscape plants, or covered with slippery leaves, grass or landscape debris, or when tree branches from your property overhang sidewalks and impede pedestrian traffic – then it’s time (per Decatur City code) to clear the sidewalks for safe pedestrian movement. Individual households may want to work independently to complete this project or a street or neighborhood can band together for a community-building event. If you choose the latter, here are some suggestions from one Decatur resident who organized this project successfully for her street last year: • Neighbors clearing the sidewalk areas in front of their own homes at the same time provides a good opportunity for the sharing of tools and skills. The day of the event (or before), you can ask neighbors who are unable to participate if they would like help. • Select a date three months ahead. Solicit input on which dates people could make and select the most popular. • Two months ahead, send a save-the-date email to everyone. • Two weeks before, distribute a one-page flyer to all homes in the target area. • A porch party the evening before is a fun way to kick off the event.

Decatur Craft Beer Festival

Call for Proposals The Decatur Craft Beer Festival committee is now accepting proposals from Decatur-based nonprofit organizations to be considered for funding from proceeds of the October 2018 festival. Each year, the committee donates 75 percent of festival profits to designated projects, funding the holiday Terrific Thursdays advertising campaign and providing startup funding for the next year’s festival. The committee is interested in funding projects that contribute to the quality of life in Decatur and do not have ongoing fundraising associated with them. The committee prefers to use its funds to jumpstart a special project and provide seed capital to get a focused activity off the ground. Organizations must be based within the city of Decatur to be considered. The grant application for 2018 is available at decaturbeerfestival.com, or email shirley.baylis@decaturga.com to request a copy. Applications must be received by 5 p.m., Monday, Aug. 6, in the Community and Economic Development department, on the second floor of Decatur City Hall.

Amplify Decatur raises $40,000 for DCM

T

he 2018 Amplify Decatur concert series raised $40,000 for Decatur Cooperative Ministry (DCM), a Decaturbased nonprofit organization that works to prevent and alleviate poverty and homelessness in Decatur and DeKalb County. Amplify Decatur has raised and donated more than $190,000 to DCM since 2011. This year’s $40,000 gift equals the most an Amplify Concert Series has generated to date. On April 14, thousands gathered on the downtown square for the Amplify Decatur Musical Festival, the centerpiece of the concert series. The festival – presented by Lenz, a Decatur-based marketing agency, and produced in partnership with Eddie’s Attic – featured performances by The Lone Bellow,

The Jayhawks, Amanda Shires, and Parker Millsap. Atlanta-based folk duo Dwayne Shivers also performed. Amplify Decatur also featured a three-night stand at historic Eddie’s Attic, with performances by Jared and Amber, The Weather Station, Sirens of South Austin,

and Antigone Rising. The concert series culminated with a Steve Earle vs. Townes Van Zandt tribute night featuring eight local and regional acts. The mission of Decatur Cooperative Ministry is to help families facing homelessness settle into safe, stable homes and build healthy lives filled with peace, hope, and opportunity. DCM provides families in crisis with 90 days of emergency shelter for women and children, six months of transitional housing for homeless families, permanent supportive housing for homeless families with disabilities, financial assistance for families facing eviction/utility disconnection, and emergency assistance for low-income veteran households. fter five years in the downstairs offices of the First Christian Church of Decatur, the Decatur Education Foundation has moved its operations to the former United Methodist Children’s Home (UMCH). The new space will provide three additional offices and work spaces for the five-person staff and volunteers. The organization moved shortly after the school year ended. Executive Director Gail Rothman says it marks an important milestone in DEF’s growth. The staff is excited about the move, but a little wistful about leaving the church. DEF’s email and phone number have remained the same; the new mailing address is 500 S. Columbia Dr., Decatur, GA 30030.
