Special Interest Camps include sports camps, swim camps, art camps, STEM camps, and various exploration camps on topics of interest such as Spanish language, theatre, entrepreneurship, and music. Dr. Deborah Gilboa explains that “Skill- or interest-focused camps…build knowledge as well as hone ability, and this is perfect because many kids like to know a lot about something.” In our special interest camps children may expand upon a known skill area or explore something completely new.

Day Camps include two all-new camps for rising K-5th graders: iDiscover Camp and Camp Sycamore, and D.R.E.A.M. Camp for rising 6th-8th graders. Dr. Deborah Gilboa notes that “Day camps encourage kids to play hard and try a whole variety of new experiences” and that in day camps “Children often find they love something they had never even heard of before the summer.” Day camps also emphasize socio-emotional development through deliberately designed camp groups and relationships with caring adults. This design element helps children develop three key character traits – resilience, respect, and responsibility – as they learn to ask for what they need, try new activities, navigate group dynamics, find role models, and take ownership for their choices and actions.* This Summer Camp edition of the Playbook is your tool for planning your summer. You will find all of our summer offerings organized by date on pages 12-13. Camp registration opens Saturday, March 14, at 8 a.m. online (decaturga.com/webtrac) and at the Decatur Recreation Center.
