Decatur After School Programs Achieve National Accreditation

I

n February, Decatur’s Children and Youth Services Division accomplished the milestone achievement of eight of eight accredited programs through the Council on Accreditation (COA). This was the first time in the history of the city’s after school programs that 100 percent of after school sites were accredited.

The accreditation process involves many hours of preparation and effort on the part of the city’s program and administrative staff, followed by a visit from an endorser from COA who reviews every aspect of the programs’ operations, including programming, administration, and human resources. A growing body of research on the field of “out-of-school time” demonstrates the capacity of quality after school and camp programs to benefit children and youth in a variety of important ways. Through quality program experiences children gain social skills, a sense of self-efficacy, meaningful relationships and connections to their communities, and improve their academic achievement as well. That commitment to quality drives the city’s efforts to achieve and maintain the highest national standards for our programs. continued on page 2

Continued from page 1 Clairemont Animal Crackers and Oakhurst Animal Crackers achieved COA accreditation in 2014. The city’s other four Animal Crackers programs – DRC, Glennwood, Westchester and Winnona Park – as well as Fifth Avenue Whiz Kids and the Project REAL program at Renfroe all successfully achieved this milestone in 2016. The Ebster Whiz Kids program is new this year and will pursue accreditation in a future cycle.

Decatur After School Timeline 1981 The city started offering after-school programming. 1984 In partnership with City Schools of Decatur, the city opened its first school-based afterschool sites. 1997 The city’s Westchester Animal Crackers program participated in the state pilot for the National After School Association’s (NAA) accreditation program and was among the first three programs in the state to achieve NAA accreditation. 2009 COA became the accrediting body for the after-school field. 2010 Project REAL, the city’s middle school after-school program, was one of the first two programs in the state to achieve COA accreditation. 2014 Clairemont and Oakhurst Animal Crackers achieved COA accreditation. 2016 DRC, Glennwood, Westchester and Winnona Park Animal Crackers, and Fifth Avenue Whiz Kids achieved COA accreditation. Project REAL was reaccredited with COA.

Yoga Chair/Mat Class is suitable for persons with mobility issues and can be practiced on the mat and/ or with a chair. Please bring your own mat. Sample topics are optometry, dentistry, neurology, naturopathy, orthopedics, fire and rescue, veterinary, reiki, and horticultural and gardening therapy. All walks are co-led by Active Living staff. We use Decatur’s walking brochure for three-mile options. In inclement weather we walk indoors on the elevated walking track.
