After School Adventures:

Fun by Design

A

fter more than 35 years of after school programming, we believe Decatur’s nine after school programs – which serve K-8th graders at nine locations around the city – represent the highest standard of quality in the field. The city boasts eight of only 18 nationally accredited after school programs in the state of Georgia. The design of our after school programs is no accident. The activities and program components of Animal Crackers, Whiz Kids and Project R.E.A.L. are designed to achieve the CYS mission: Community partners will collaborate to promote the development of our children and youth into healthy, productive, lifelong learners. The programs utilize evidence-based curricula, emphasize the development of 21st century skills, and offer opportunities to expand children’s developmental assets. CYS coordinates with City Schools of Decatur for facility usage, snacks, homework, technology programming, and overall guidance of the program’s direction.

Evidence-Based Curricula One of the primary roles that after school programs can play in children’s lives is to help develop the “whole child.” Social and emotional learning are key aspects of helping children develop skills for success in school, in interpersonal relationships, and in life. CYS programs utilize the Second Step curriculum to teach skills related to empathy, anger and emotion management, impulse control and problem solving. continued on page 15

After School

After School continued from page 1 Healthy lifestyles are a core aspect of the CYS mission. Our Animal Crackers programs utilize the CATCH Kids Club curriculum to share a variety of topics related to healthy food choices and physical activity.

21st Century Skills Decatur’s after school programs are designed around a youth-driven philosophy that allows children and youth to make their own choices during after school hours. The program offers a variety of station areas that allow children opportunities to explore and experiment. Animal Crackers offers TechSquad – a project-based technology activity led by certified teachers to support technology literacy. The city’s programs employ a project-based learning model that threads throughout the school year, allowing children to engage in longer-term projects related to a theme.

Developmental Assets The Search Institute identified more than 40 developmental assets that correlate with young people’s success as they enter the adult world. The city’s after school programs include specific elements designed to support and promote developmental assets in participants. Opportunities for creative expression abound both in free art areas and in daily structured projects. All of the city’s after school sites participate in cultural and fine arts programs in partnership with local teaching artists. The program connects children to their school and to caring adults outside their families. Homework Time is another way the program supports children’s school-related developmental assets. For more information about Children and Youth Services programs, visit decaturga.com/cys.

Mary Miller Decatur Youth Fund If equity for all of Decatur’s children and youth is important to you, consider a contribution to the Mary Miller Decatur Youth Fund. The fund makes it possible for children in the city whose families cannot afford to pay for athletics, swim team, after school, and camp programs to participate in these enriching opportunities. The Decatur Education Foundation manages this fund, which allows Decatur children in need to participate in Active Living and Children and Youth Services activities throughout the year. To make a financial contribution to the Decatur Youth Fund, mail a check made out to the Decatur Education Foundation (please write “Decatur Youth Fund” in notes) to 200 Nelson Ferry Rd, Decatur, GA 30030. Contributions are tax deductible. For more information, contact Claire Miller, 404-378-1082 or claire.miller@decaturga.com. SEPTEMBER-DECEMBER 2017 •
