Oakhurst Indoor Pool is open for lap swimming and swim lessons year round. May Is National Bike Month Decatur Celebrates with a Variety of Bicycling Opportunities Every Saturday: Sam’s Freight Room Ride, 2 p.m. – Meet at 415 E Howard Avenue for an easy 11-mile ride through Avondale Estates, Oakhurst and Decatur. No drop ride.

May 5: Family Bike Ride, 2 p.m. – Meet at Harmony Park for this short ride around Oakhurst. All ages are welcome. Helmets are required.

May 8: Bike to School Day May 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30: Silver Spokes Program – Ride with trikes. Pre-registration is required. $25 per month. Held at Legacy Park.

May 13-17: Bike to Work Week May 17: Bike to Work Day – Riders are invited to stop by Decatur Recreation Center between 7 and 9 a.m. for coffee and pastries on their way to work.

May 17: Third Friday Decatur Fun Ride – 6:30 p.m. Meet at Decatur Recreation Center. Followed by a visit to a local pub or restaurant for refreshments. Not recommended for children.

May 19: Easy No-Drop Ride to Stone Mountain Park – 9 a.m. Offered by Bicycle South, 2098 N. Decatur Rd. The ride begins from Bicycle South, and there will be refreshments served at the store after the ride.

May 24: Senior Bike Ride – 10 a.m. Bring your own bike for this fun, slow-paced bike ride geared toward seniors. Helmets are required.

May 25-26: Bike Valet parking at the Decatur Arts Festival – Sponsored by the Decatur Arts Alliance and the City of Decatur.

May 25: Bike Registration at the Decatur Arts Festival – 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Bring your bike to the Bike Valet and have it registered by the Decatur Police. Pick up some Bike Safety information. Third Friday Bike Rides! Third Friday of the Month, 6:30 p.m.

Join Decatur Active Living staff for our monthly Third Friday Bike Rides March through October. These rides are designed for all levels – no one will be left behind. Not recommended for children. Meet at the Decatur Recreation Center and be ready to ride at 6:30 p.m. Helmets and lights are required. After the ride, we visit a local watering hole for refreshments. SPLASH! at Decatur Pools Ebster Pool • 404 W. Trinity Place • 404-378-4303 Ebster pool is the most recently renovated pool in the city of Decatur. Home of the Decatur Gators Swim Team, the pool has eight lanes, a new splash pad, lights and a renovated pool house. Ebster Pool is on W. Trinity Place at Atlanta Avenue, next to the Beacon Municipal Complex.

Glenlake Pool • 1121 Church St. • 404-378-7671 Glenlake Pool is Decatur’s largest and most active pool. It has a new PVC liner and new pump room equipment, along with a new sand filter. It offers a snack area, a patio for enjoying the sun, shade shelter, and shallow water for small children. The pool is one block north of Commerce Drive on Church Street.

McKoy Pool is a popular place for families and was recently resurfaced. The pool has zero-depth entry (beach entry) access, making it easier for elderly guests and those with disabilities; bubbler features to entertain younger swimmers; and dedicated lap lines that can be scheduled for adult-only lap swimmers.

Residents may bring proof of residency in the form of a tax bill or utility bill to Glenlake Tennis Center after May 1 to be issued a City of Decatur residency card. This residency card will be presented to the front desk attendant and will allow the cardholder to be admitted to the pool at the resident rate. A driver’s license presented to the front desk attendant will not allow entry to the pools at the resident rate. Resident cards do not expire.

Decatur Pool Guidelines • Large floats or inner tubes are not acceptable because they obstruct the view of the lifeguards. • Water guns, throwing toys or other items that may cause harm are prohibited. Pouring toys and small floating toys for tots are allowed. Safety of items will be determined at the discretion of the pool staff. • Children may only wear coast guard approved personal flotation devices with close parent supervision. • Patrons swimming with children who wear diapers must use leak-proof baby swimsuits or swim diapers. Swim diapers are available at the front desk. • We encourage parents to accompany

their children to the pool and to supervise them closely while they are in the water. We also ask that you discuss pool safety rules with your children and encourage respect for pool rules and staff. All children under 14 must be accompanied by someone over 14 to be admitted into the pool. • The toddler section at Glenlake Pool is reserved for children 5 years old and younger. • No cotton T-shirts or shorts allowed – cloth fibers clog the pool filters.

ll registration and reservations for pool rentals, group lessons and private lessons are conducted at Glenlake Tennis Center, 121 Church St., 404-377-7231. Groups of 12 or more must have a reservation to assure adequate supervision and prevent overcrowding of the pool. To make a reservation contact Aquatics Director Josh Weston for approval of swim time and make an appointment to complete a Group Swim Agreement. Decatur Active Living and Children & Youth Services programs have priority scheduling for group swimming. Call 404-377-7231 for more information.

Group Policies • Youth groups (day care, camps, etc.) must have a 1-to-12 ratio of supervisors/ counselors to youth. • If there are children under age 5 in the group, the ratio of supervision/counselor to youth must be 1-to-6. • Groups must sign an agreement and: – Come at a scheduled time only

Pool Events Independence Day Pool Celebrations July 4 • 4:30 p.m. Celebrate July 4th with games, fun and much more. Show your colors by dressing up in red, white and blue. Decatur pools will be decorated.

How to Reserve a Decatur Pool Decatur pools are No. in party 2 hours (Resident/Nonresident) rented on a first1-50 $250/$300 come basis. Pools 51-75 $300/$350 may be reserved for private parties 76-100 $350/$400 May 27-Sept. 3. The patron renting the pool must fill out a reservation form at least two weeks prior to the rental and pay for the rental. Rates, listed above, vary in price according to the number of people attending the rental. The count includes all people walking through the door whether swimming or just observing.

Gators Live in the Water! Decatur Gators Swim Team • 4-18 Yrs Swim Meets • Tuesdays at Ebster Pool Swim Season • April 29-June 28 Each child must be able to swim 25 meters of either freestyle or backstroke. Children who cannot swim 25 meters should be enrolled in Mini Gators. Mini Gators is an instructional league whose goal is to teach strokes and proper swimming techniques, so that members can graduate to the Gators Swim Team – perhaps before the end of the season. Mini Gators enrollment has a strict limit of 40 participants. If you are unsure whether your child can swim 25 meters, then they should be in Mini Gators. A swim test is available prior to registration.

Swim Teams At-a-Glance Team

Mini Gators • 4-12 yrs For swimmers who want to join the Gators but aren’t able to swim 25 meters, we offer the Mini Gator team. This session helps the swimmer get ready to compete. Participants will not swim in meets until they are able to swim 25 meters and are comfortable in deep water, but they will be able to attend meets and cheer on the Gators. Children must not be afraid of the water and must have no problems placing their entire head under the water. They must be independent swimmers with the ability to do a basic freestyle. Dog paddling is not considered independent swimming. The multiplechild discount does not apply to the Mini Gators program because space is limited.

Please consider purchasing a wetsuit for your child. The pool will be cold in May.

Flag Football • 5-13 yrs

A four-week introductory course designed to develop basic soccer skills. Space is limited. Registration is accepted on a first-comefirst-served basis beginning Aug. 1. Instructors: Teresa Davis and Derante Stephens.

A six-week Flag Football program in which players enjoy two weeks of basic introduction to the game. Players are then divided into teams. Children 8-13 years old will have one practice a week and children 5-7 years old will put their skills to work in weeks three-six with a 20-minute practice followed by a 40-minute game. Practices will be held at local fields and games will be held at Ebster Field and the Jones Boys and Girls Club Field (450 East Lake Dr.). A skills assessment will be held on Sunday, Aug. 11.

Mini Soccer • 4-5 yrs These programs for boys and girls focus on fun and basic skills like passing and dribbling, while introducing beginners to the game. Each team has one 30-minute game following a 30-minute practice. Mini soccer teams consist of eight players. All games and practices are held on Saturdays. Mini Soccer coaches are always needed – please consider volunteering.

League Soccer • 6-11 yrs Coed teams are divided by age groups, 6-7, 8-9, and 10-11 leagues. All levels and skill ranges are welcome. Participants will have a one-hour practice during the week, beginning the week of Sept. 16. Games will be played on Saturdays starting Sept. 28.

There is no better way to start off the baseball season than with an opening day parade. The parade begins at McKoy Park and continues through the Oakhurst business district, down East Lake Drive and into Oakhurst Park. Needed: Volunteers, parade watchers, organizers, grill assistants, trucks and convertible vehicles. NEW! Competitive 7 on 7 Flag Football This competitive flag football team is for boys and girls in grades 6th-8th. The team will participate in the Premier Sportz Group League. Practices will be held at local fields and games will be played on Fridays and Saturdays beginning Aug. 30.

Tackle Football Tackle Football will be offered this fall for 4th, 5th and 6th grade boys and girls. Equipment (helmet and shoulder pads) is available for rent on a first-come first-served

basis for $60 with a security deposit of $200. Players will need a helmet, shoulder pads, protective cup, practice pants, thigh, hip and kneepads, and cleats. Practices will be held on local fields beginning June 3. Games will be played on Saturdays beginning in July.

Coed Ultimate Frisbee Registration is Saturday, July 6, for Coed Ultimate Frisbee, offered to middle-school-age boys and girls. Practices will be held twice a week (Wednesday and Sunday) on Ebster Field, beginning Wednesday, Aug. 14. Teams will play in the Metro Atlanta Middle School Ultimate League. League games will be played weekdays after school SeptemberOctober, with a tournament in November. Teams will be coached by Decatur High’s coaches and captains.

NEW! Middle School Girls Volleyball Registration begins Saturday, July 6. Practices will be held twice a week at Decatur Recreation Center beginning the week of Aug. 5. Games will be played on Saturdays, beginning Sept. 7. Players must provide their own kneepads, shoes and shorts.

Candinews Acting Class

Youth Activities

Finally, the students harvest the fruits and vegetables and learn how to turn them into delicious meals. Every few weeks we host a garden club party so kids can eat what they have grown.

This class will awaken the creative spirit and imagination through acting, music and movement in a safe, non-competitive environment. We’ll work on all aspects of theater, acting, dancing and music. Registration monthly.

Karate • 7-17 yrs A holistic approach to learning the art of karate. This is a family-oriented class. Our philosophy is that adults can learn from children and vice versa. Ebster Garden Club This youth garden club is a hands-on, fun environment where students take part in every aspect of gardening. They start seedlings, dig and loosen soil, plant the seedlings in the ground, and water the garden.

This cardio/core and muscle toning class builds muscle and boosts metabolism, using dumbbells, resistance bands, stability balls, jump ropes, weights and weighted balls. You’ll get your heart rate pumping while developing core strengths to support you in a wide variety of activities.

This class is geared to adults who want to dance to celebrate through songs of sevillanas, tangos, and bulerias. Study the technique that’s used for basic marking steps, footwork, llamadas, and then use it in combinations and improvisation.

Tai Chi Flow This class is for intermediate students of Tai Chi-Qigong. Instructor permission is needed to register. Emphasis is on deepening the learning of the Yang-Style 24 forms practice. 2019-20 After School Programs

he City of Decatur’s after school programs will operate in nine locations in the 201920 school year with five Animal Crackers K2nd grade programs, three Whiz Kids 3rd5th grade programs and Project REAL for middle schoolers at Renfroe. Eight of the nine programs take place in school buildings. Ebster Whiz Kids takes place at Ebster Recreation Center.

Project REAL • Grades 6-8 Recreation, Enrichment, Athletics and Learning Project REAL offers recreation, enrichment, athletics and learning to Renfroe Middle School students in the hours after dismissal. The program offers a range of choices from short- and long-term projects, to sports, to food projects, to group activities of all sorts especially designed for middle schoolers. The program also features periodic youth-directed activities, service learning projects, and special events.

After School Lottery Registration for 2019-20 closed on April 19. The lottery spin took place April 26. Families may check their registration status online via WebTrac. Children and Youth Services will contact families by May 10 to confirm registration status. If you missed lottery registration, open registration for those who missed the lottery will begin May 1 at 10 am. Missed the Lottery? New households will need to complete a 2019-20 After school Participant Information and Release Form and Health History Form for each child in order to generate a household identification number in our registration system. Forms are completed and submitted online and require a digital photograph. Please allow five business days for processing new household paperwork. Summer Day Camps include iDiscover Camp for rising K-5th graders, Camp Sycamore for rising K-5th graders. Summer E Camps focus on a particular area of interest for the entire camp day. Some examples of enrichment camps offered this summer are: chess, science, makers, cooking, LEGOs, theatre, and many more! Sports, Tennis & Aquatics Camps focus on skill development and teamwork. Decatur’s Parks and Greenspaces

ecatur has 150 acres of city parks, including large recreational areas with pavilions, active greenspaces, and small neighborhood parks. Parks make life better for all of us in many ways – a cleaner environment, increased safety, healthier people, a strong sense of community and economic development.

Adair Park Adair Street Adair Park, a four-acre neighborhood recreational facility, is home to the Mary Gay House, the Swanton House and a historic log cabin. There are numerous trees throughout the park and picnic tables with trash receptacles available for public use. There is also a playground area and a dog park. Adair Park is a beautiful addition to the Swanton Heights and Lenox Place communities. Street parking only.

Griffin Park/Rev. Roy Moss Garden S. McDonough Street Located across the street from the College Heights Early Childhood Center, the lush greenspace features native plants, pleasant sidewalks and comfortable sitting benches for quiet contemplation.

A large multipurpose field is a key feature at this five-acre neighborhood recreational facility. There is a pool with a splash pad, basketball courts and a playground area. Recent additions include a small pavilion with restrooms. Decatur Active Living’s youth sports and Decatur High School’s athletic programs use the field. The park sits on the property that houses the Police Department, City Schools of Decatur Administration and Ebster Recreation Center. It shares a parking lot with City Schools of Decatur and Ebster Recreation Center staff.

The Westchester community has worked to preserve and beautify the three-acre park by planting native species and building a nature trail along the creek running through the park. Located behind Westchester Elementary, it is the perfect place for a walk or some quiet time on a sunny day

Glenlake Park 1121 Church St. This 17-acre park offers picnic tables, grills and trash receptacles, a swimming pool and pool house, a picnic pavilion, and a tennis center with five courts. There is a small up14

Legacy Park 500 S. Columbia Dr. This 77-acre campus, purchased by Decatur in 2017, was created in 1873 and included a farm, gardens and residential facilities for children. The site offers opportunities for active and passive recreation and is accessible by foot, bike or car, being nestled near downtown Decatur and surrounded by neighborhoods. A conservation easement sets aside approximately 22 acres on the eastern portion of the site, including a pond and a Global Growers Garden.

McKoy Park/skate park 534 McKoy St. The nine-acre neighborhood recreational facility has a 330-foot baseball field that is fenced and lighted, grills, bike racks, a newly renovated picnic pavilion with restrooms, a concession/scoring building and McKoy Pool, which has zero depth entry and water features. The freshly painted basketball court has new goals. The adult fitness zone offers a variety of adult fitness equipment options. There is a playground area, a greenspace for games, picnic tables with grills, and a skate park. The site also includes two separate parking areas and concrete walkways connecting the site features. McKoy is the home of Decatur High School’s varsity baseball team and Decatur Active Living’s adult softball programs.

Mead Road Park 175 Mead Rd. Located on .75 acre adjacent to Oakhurst School, the park offers a large, open grassy area, a play structure, a basketball court and three shaded picnic tables. Parking is available during out-of-school hours in the Oakhurst School parking lot.

Oakhurst Park 307 Feld Ave. This eight-acre neighborhood recreational facility has two multipurpose fields, two buildings, including a picnic pavilion with grills, restrooms, a concession/scoring building, and bike racks. There are two lighted
