2021

In a year where life has been turned upside down and we find a “new normal” around every corner, we think children and families should have something to look forward to this summer. Camp is great for children for many reasons – and yes, that includes getting children away from home and into the world outside to make new memories!

At camp, children can make new friends, develop their social skills, try new things, learn new skills or deepen and expand existing ones. At day camp and sports camps, children spend many hours outdoors in a wide variety of healthy activities. At enrichment camps, children can continue to hone their skills in creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration – core skills for every 21st century learner. As we look forward to the summer of 2021, Decatur’s Children and Youth Services and Active Living divisions have put together a slate of sports, enrichment and day camp programs with COVID-19 in mind. The programs have been designed with reduced enrollment to address social distancing and space limitations at the various city facilities. The city has developed a variety of protocols related to cohort groupings, masks, disinfecting and sanitizing of high-touch surfaces, plenty of time outdoors and more. No field trips are planned for summer 2021 out of an abundance of caution. In the event that the public health environment looks safer for group interactions indoors by late spring, we may be able to expand our numbers and add campers. This Camp Playbook can be used as a planning tool for your child’s summer. The At-A-Glance summary on pages 8-9 lists Decatur’s summer camps by week and includes times, locations, instructors, and cost. Additional camp planning tools can be found at decaturga.com/cys.

Pandemic Planning for Summer Camp

D

ecatur’s 2021 summer camp plans include protocols and structural elements to address mitigation of the potential spread of SARS-CoV-2 at camp. Reduced numbers of campers organized in cohort groups – with dedicated staff members assigned to each group – will allow for adequate group management in case of weather concerns. Staff members will receive training in activity and cleaning protocols, and proper use of PPE. Additional changes to standard camp practices include: • No field trips • Increased physical space allotments for E Camps • Outdoor check-in/out with PPE and minimal contact protocols • Distinct cohort groups – with dedicated staff – meet in designated places • Communication protocols for parents, staff and campers • Emphasis on outdoor activity • Reduced enrollment numbers to allow for social distancing indoors • Screening protocols for children and staff • Response and management plan for suspected and confirmed cases • Protocols for preventing spread • Cleaning and disinfecting protocols • Food service protocols • Activity protocols • PPE instructions. Details on all of the above may be found in the Children and Youth Services COVID-19 Operations Plan. Visit decaturga.com/cys for more information.

After-Camp Care 4-5 p.m. $20/week • 4-6 p.m. $40/week After-Camp Care is available for any camp ending at 4 p.m. After-Camp Care is not available for Sports camps. After-Camp Care registration requires that the camper be first enrolled in a pre-requisite camp session.

JUNIOR COUNSELOR PROGRAM 16-17 YRS

eaders-in-Training is a teen summer camp program that provides an opportunity to develop management and leadership skills through innovative and project-based learning activities. The activities are geared toward college and career exploration, service and social impact, and active living. The objective is to empower teens to embrace the importance of independence, interdependence, relationship building, problem solving, effective communication, self-management, assertiveness, and group management skills. Throughout the dynamic LIT summer season, teens participate in job readiness workshops. They learn interview skills and participate in a mock interview, build their resume and cover letter, and get professional headshots. The LIT program begins with an intensive orientation in which LITs learn about proper supervision and about leading a variety of activities for younger children. The LITs learn CPR and First Aid as well as other skills and knowledge in preparation for supporting the summer camp program. The required orientation – June 7-11, 9 a.m-3 p.m. – runs daily and is mandatory. All LITs must attend every day of orientation – no exceptions! Applications for the LIT program are online at decaturga.com/cys on the Forms and Documents page on Jan. 2. Applications must be returned by March 15. Interviews will take place April 5-9 (unless otherwise arranged). Applicants need recommendations from two teachers and one non-relative personal reference. Completed recommendation forms should accompany applications, each in a sealed envelope.

he Junior Counselor Program is a continuation of the LIT program, providing the next steps toward becoming a full-fledged summer camp counselor. Prior to the start of summer camps, JCs attend summer staff orientation week along with summer camp counselors. The orientation includes training in facilitating group activities, activity planning, cooperative games, diversity, risk management, CPR and First Aid, and communication. JCs attend their camp’s weekly staff meetings. Applicants must be 16-17 years old and have completed at least one year as an LIT in Decatur (or similar program with another agency – documentation required).
