MANNEKEN PIS Knee-high to a grasshopper, Manneken Pis has come from a simple drinking fountain to the status of Brussels’ symbol. But what’s the story behind the little peeing boy? No one knows for sure. One of the many legends tells that the little boy saved Brussels as the city was under siege by peeing on a fuse that was attached to barrels of gunpowder, thus preventing the destruction of Brussels. Many tourists are surprised when they see the little boy for the first time. They wonder how something so small can be so famous. Perhaps this is one of the many examples of Belgian surrealism and humour. Manneken Pis regularly wears one of his 800 colourful costumes, most of which have been offered by representatives of countries around the world. For example, he once wore a panda costume, offered by Chengdu city.

ナミュール NAMUR, capital of Wallonia
城砦 古代にも城砦があったと記されていますが、現在の城址は17世 紀のもの。全体で8haもある広大な庭園には、森林博物館や野外 劇場もあります。頂上から見た渓谷や街並みは絶景。ミニトレイ ンに乗って見学することもできます。（料金：1人6€）訪問者は シタデルの敷地を無料で歩くことができます。2015年3月に、ベ ルギーのアーティストであるヤン・ファーブルは“サーチング・ フォー・ユートピア（ユートピアを探して）”といzを創り上げ ました。5トンもあるそのカメの銅像は、臨時博物館の一部とし て、その敷地に腰掛けてました。その銅像はナミューの住人から あたたかい歓迎を受け、住人たちはその美術作品を取っておく為 に基金を寄付しました。そして、その銅像は街の新しいシンボル となりました。 鐘楼 ユネスコの世界無形遺産に登録された、ベルギーの鐘楼群のう ちの一つ。聖ピエール教会の鐘楼としてあった物が1745年の教会 の火災によって、ナミュールの町の城壁の一部として1388年に建 設された聖ジャック塔に移される。1746年から城壁の開門、閉門 の時を鐘が告げていた。高さ20メートルの聖ジャック塔は14世紀 の軍事的建造物の重要な遺産でもある。 ★ 住所： Rue du Beffroi, 5000 Namur

In Belgium, you can find high quality plain chocolate such as tablets, as well as filled chocolates, known as “pralines”, which are one of Belgium’s most successful exports. Covered in white, milk or dark chocolate they have been delighting customers since the 1850s and today there are more than 400 different pralines, manufactured by all sorts of chocolatiers from small artisan workshops, to huge mechanised factories. Most artisans still make and decorate their pralines by hand, thus giving each one a unique personal touch.

With literally hundreds of different sorts of beers to choose from, it’s no surprise that beer is Belgium’s national drink. Beer has been brewed for centuries in this country. Venture in one of the many cafes and bars, most of them have an extensive beer menu. Most people consider that the best beer is brewed in the country’s monasteries.
