THE FUTURE OF COLOUR HAS BEEN REVEALED
| 10 | feature
Marketers and graphic designers have long known the power of colour to boost the success of a campaign and retailers are all too aware of the emotive effect of hue in influencing product sales. As a result, the importance of accurate colour-trend forecasting cannot be overestimated in today’s image-centric world. A forerunner, then, in the field of colour prediction, Plascon, South Africa’s largest paint manufacturer, has built its reputation on not only providing leading-edge products but also immeasurably valuable inspiration through publications such as its Colour Forecast, which is revealed annually at the country’s largest
décor and design exhibition, Decorex Joburg. “The 2016 Plascon Colour Forecast continues a tradition started in 1999, when we launched our first Forecast” says Anne Roselt, Plascon’s Colour Manager. “The combination of local expertise and global insight that goes into producing the Forecast means it is relevant to the South African context but is also dialled into international trends and understandings.” 2016’s significant hues are firmly rooted in the 21st century, with its pervasive sense of adventure, which is underpinned by an innate yearning for social interaction.
“Inspiration comes by way of the physical landscape, be it the incandescent canopy of a night sky or the chalky soils of a topography tattooed by the scouring of weather and time,” she says adding that, although forward-looking, colour is still significantly influenced by the pull of the past. “In addition, paint application techniques break new ground, with everything from gradated finishes, weightless ombrés and powdery effects interspersed with graphic bands and stripes, floor-to-ceiling all-over colour and carefully balanced light and dark tones.”

DECOREX UNVEILS
THE TOP DECORATING TRENDS FOR 2016
The home of the future is one that has evolved over time. The decorating style is as individual as the pieces that compose it, and the look as timeless as the memories those pieces evoke. Such is the essence of the considered home, say the trend forecasters at Decorex SA, who have identified this, and those that follow, as the major influences on decorating in 2016.
1. ALL THINGS CONSIDERED The Chinese principles of thought, restraint and intention are at the heart of the abiding theme for the Year of the Monkey, which sees a considered approach applied to the art of decorating. Objects are chosen on merit alone – be it for their sculptural loveliness, their alluring tactility or their fine craftsmanship – and no longer for their relationship to other elements in a composition. Yet, as such, they find their unique place in the greater scheme of things, the look evolving with the layering of time. Detailing is key to the considered home where superfluity and excess have no place. Every element – be it an attentiongrabbing coffee table or a simple brass door handle – has value in and of itself and plays an essential role as part of an ever-changing whole.
| 13 | feature
2. RAW EDGE The collective craving for organic materials continues unabated into 2016. Concrete, stone, timber and raw fibres are both reassuringly sustainable and bring to interiors a textural quality that cannot be easily simulated by manufactured products. Soothing neutrals tend to dominate in schemes where smooth contrasts with rough and grained surfaces are placed or mottled together. And, as it is in nature, where all is born and grows, ages and decays, so the natural home has a dynamic energy to it that is as transient as the passing of the seasons.
3. SACRED SPACE RAWglobal EDGE The2. exploding population has put space at a premium, its efficient use now mandatory. Every square inch of the home is considered valuable real estate, and none more so than in urban dwellings where footprints are small and living is compact. Storage gets clever and creative and furnishings are prized for their dualfunctionality – fluid sofa beds and fold-out tables are the heirlooms of tomorrow. Space saving becomes the impetus for a renewed focus on the essential tenets of industrial design where form and function converge seamlessly.
4. ABOVE THE LINE 2.isRAW EDGE Black back (was it ever gone?), but this time its use is judiciously measured. No longer relegated to the support role as a moody backdrop or called fleetingly to the stage as a cameo accent, the colour spectrum’s broodiest hue is star of the show when used to portray compositional elements and silhouette their graphic lines. Furnishings are angular and hard-edged, their straight and slender black limbs defining both substance and context alike, while classic pinstripes bring a smart edge to soft furnishings.
| 14 | feature
5. PEARL ARDOUR The subtle pinks and purples, blues and yellows that are splintered through the kaleidoscopic facets of a diamond are introduced to the new season’s all-white schemes, adding iridescence where once there was austerity. Transparency is key to the look and both pastel-stained glass and Perspex are leveraged for their reflective qualities. While undeniably opulent, the look still retains an air of light heartedness – the playful effect of myriad beams of minutely refracted light and infinite dancing shadows.
6. TRIBAL RIGHTS EDGE The2. callRAW of the Mother Continent continues to seduce in 2016 with inspiration now taken close to home. The rich patterning and saturated colours of Ndebele wall art enter modern interiors, where the emphasis falls squarely on symmetry and repetition. Bright geometrics and monochromatic stripes zigzag over walls and then beyond, blurring the boundaries between floor and ceiling.
7. CUE COLOUR 2. RAW EDGE Nature’s vibrant brights again serve as inspiration for
“2016 is all about considered comfort,” says Sian Gutstadt, Portfolio Director of Decorex SA and 100% Design South Africa, adding that “décor and design enthusiasts will be able to see all the furnishings, textiles, accessories and services that are setting trends in 2016 at Decorex Durban.”
the new season’s colour cards. At the juncture between lemon and lime, zesty citron has all the freshness of early summer, especially when mediated by white, while all-over yellow moves out of the kitchen in 2016, lending a retro edge to laminates, linoleum and wall tiles. Coral pink, on the other hand, is smartened with accents of teal and marsala and even combined with traditional blue and white for a modern interpretation of beachhouse chic. Blues, meanwhile, are used to statement effect in large blocks of colour, each of equal intensity and dramatic in arrangement. And paint techniques are far from passé. Ombré continues to please but now is given painterly appeal with the considered use of broad brushstrokes. Shell, pumice and pebble pinks bleeding into deeper lavender and indigo is an especially popular combination, ideal for bedrooms and other contemplative spaces.
Everyone has a different vision of what would make their kitchen wonderful, and that often begins with how they intend to use it. The durable Franke Fragranite Sink Range which is treated with Sanitized速, is made with an exceptionally tough material which is highly resistant to burns, dents, chips and stains. Available in Onyx and Polar White.

“The boys are invited back again to Decorex Durban with the launch of the brand-new Top Man feature, ”
The bachelor pad, the man cave, the lad’s lair… call it what you will, but the demarcation, in recent years, of an exclusively all-male space in the home has given new definition to the term ‘masculine décor’. In the past, the trend has been admirably acknowledged at South Africa’s premier décor, design and lifestyle exhibition with showcase features such Mancaves and Manscapes, and this year is no different. The boys are invited back again to Decorex Durban with the launch of the brand-new Top Man feature, only this time they get to create the living space that best portrays their personalities.
Says interior designer Brett Harris of Even Flow Décor, who will be decorating the exclusive space inspired by Beard’s personality: “We’ll be going for a look where natural materials, (think plenty of masculine leather, sustainable timber and ethically sourced game skins), predominate. The scheme will be built around an outdoor fire pit, and decorated in a contemporary colonial style, with vintage maps, table lamps and cabinets filled with all manner of old-school artifacts.”
Like Beard, Varshan Sookhun is a seasoned radio man. At age 35, Sookhun, who gained national recognition when, in 2001, he joined LotusFM as the producer-presenter of the Bollywood Billboard, Sponsored by Real Natural Stone, suppliers of has 18 years of professional broadcasting behind everything from Travertine tiles and cladding to him. SPOTLIGHT ON DESIGNER
BIANCA HOWARD AT DECOREX DURBAN “I don’t think one chooses to be a designer. Instead, the profession chooses you.” So says Creative Concept Specialist Bianca Howard, whose Westville-based Slinx consultancy has been awarded the prestigious Designer Spotlight feature stand at Decorex Durban 2016. Bianca is collaborating with leading local textile house, Home Fabrics, on the coveted space at this year’s highly anticipated show at the Durban Exhibition Centre. No stranger to Decorex, (Slinx was awarded the exhibition’s Best Small Stand award in 2013 and won Service Excellence awards in 2012, 2014 and 2015), Bianca’s design style is defined by
its unique ability to be both classically timeless and inherently contemporary. Her business, which was started in early 2008, offers an interior design service as well as creative conceptualisation and branding development for private, corporate and retail clients. “How people feel in a space is as important as the way it looks,” she maintains. “A successful design is all about this crucial balance.” It goes without saying that the association with Home Fabrics at Decorex Durban is an honour for the KwaZulu-Natal designer. “It’s an extraordinary opportunity to live out my passion for high-quality fabrics,” she enthuses. Marc Shotland, Group PR and Marketing Executive at Home Fabrics: “We have collaborated on this exclusive Decorex showcase for two years now and are excited to be associated with a designer who we know will push the envelope and draw visitors to the exhibition.” Although not wanting to spoil the surprise, Marc hints that Bianca’s Designer Spotlight concept will showcase her trademark flair for combining colour and design genres, while at the same time providing the ultimate stage for the broad selection of local and international fabrics and wallpapers that Home Fabrics represents. “Also exciting,” he adds, “will be the display of the very latest international products that were
launched at the famous Maison & Objet Exhibition which took place in Paris towards the end of January.” While Bianca insists that, “timeless interiors are lasting and, if executed with style and passion, will stay persistently fashionable,” Marc predicts that, trendwise, 2016 heralds a powerful appeal to the senses. “Calming, saturated colours will be combined with organic designs and prints of all things natural and earthy,” he forecasts, adding that the impetus is towards a ‘clean aesthetic’ and ‘crisp, understated design’. “Soft textures in a variety of organic fabrics are buoyant and amazingly diverse amongst various brands. Alongside this, the staple oversized flowers, watercolour-style smudged
edges and the bold use of colour will still be firm favourites.” While 2016 will see Home Fabrics once again launching a variety of collections under local brands such as Home Fabrics Basics, Design and Signature as well as Fabric Library and Fabric Library Express, Bianca’s focus will be squarely on opening her new Slinx showroom, an endeavor she anticipates Decorex Durban will facilitate. “The exhibition provides me with new business exposure and makes it easy for prospective clients to discover what Slinx has to offer,” she says. “It is also a great way for the industry to become acquainted with my business. And, of course, it also provides the opportunity to launch new ideas and generate new business.”
