We welcome you to take it home and make it home With its colourful mix of rich culture and beautiful scenery, the South African design landscape is thriving and the talent in this country has put South Africa on the creative map. From product designers to kitchen craftsmen, fabric manufacturers to decorators, South Africa has set global standards in the design industry, merging local and international trends to give design a very unique voice. It may be far-flung, but the tip of Africa has asserted itself as a significant new hub of décor and design talent. For a nation that is as diverse as its people, South African design is not defined by one particular style, but rather represents a melting pot of vibrant cultural and artistic influences. And there is no better place to witness this convergence of creative energy than the annual series of Decorex SA exhibitions – which take place in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg – and together represent the largest showcase of décor, design and lifestyle products and services on the subcontinent. In keeping with our 2016 theme, ‘Take it Home, Make it Home’, Decorex Joburg provides you with infinite takeaway ideas and inspiration for your interior and exterior spaces, covering every aspect of your home and offering the ultimate shopping experience. Our theme celebrates the fact that Africa’s largest décor, design & lifestyle exhibition portfolio offers everything you may need to renovate, restore, build or decorate. Take home great ideas, trend-lead decorating inspiration and shop for everything in and around your home. From DIY to decorating, state-of-

the-art kitchens to bathroom sanctuaries, building materials to furnishing fabrics, furniture to crockery, Decorex Joburg encourages you to take it home and make it home. This year’s exciting line-up includes the third edition of 100% Design South Africa, the high-end curated showcase of the most inspirational local and global designs and designers. DISCOVER THE FUTURE OF COLOUR WITH PLASCON AT DECOREX JOBURG

with Colour Hive, the experts behind MIX magazine and global thought leaders in the world of design and interiors,” she continues. Roselt explains that the combination of Colour Hive’s global knowledge and Plascon’s local insight gives the brand an incredibly valuable perspective to share with the South African market. “It’s about finding the elements of global trends that are appealing to local customers, as well as interpreting what’s happening overseas appropriately for this market,” she says.

Colour is not just a part of life. It is life. It’s how we express ourselves, it influences our moods and it helps us to understand our world. As South Africa’s largest paint manufacturer, Plascon not only has an expert understanding of our relationship with colour but also how to make it easy and inspiring to use, no matter what the space. It’s about combining the science behind innovative paint with the evocative power of colour, all grounded by a deep understanding of South African culture, style and environment. Every year, Plascon publishes an overview of the latest colour trends in its Colour Forecast. This exciting publication gives customers and professionals insight into the trends at play, while at the same time making it easy to interpret them in their own spaces. The Forecast has its annual debut at Decorex Joburg. As the country’s top décor and design exhibition, it’s the perfect platform for a dose of colour inspiration. “We launched our first Forecast in 1999 and it’s been an important annual project for Plascon ever since,” says Anne Roselt, Plascon’s Global Colour Manager and the driving force behind the Forecast. “This year we’re proud to continue our partnership

The Colour Forecast for 2017 follows a similar format to previous years, with trends curated around four key themes. These each have a carefully considered colour palette that captures the spirit of the trend, and a suggestion on the décor treatments to bring it to life. Without giving too much away, Roselt explains that this year’s themes are influenced by the attraction we feel for both the digital and natural worlds. This seemingly contradictory pair is very much a metaphor for who we are as people at the moment, Roselt adds, and that’s why we’re seeing it in colour in so many ways. “Our inspiration came from the world we feel under our feet and the worlds we create in our minds,” Roselt continues. She explains that we’re seeing a more minimal approach to interiors: “Not that everything is clean and white. It’s just that the use of colour is more pure and single-minded.” “As one of the co-headline sponsors of the show, Plascon recognises Decorex’s importance on the local design calendar – that’s why we continue to use it as the space to launch the Colour Forecast for the coming year,” says Roselt. She explains that the exhibition theme for this year – ‘Take it home. Make it home’ – is particularly appropriate given Plascon’s aim of empowering people to interpret colour trends in their own homes. “It’s always exciting to launch the new Forecast,” she says. “And this is the perfect place to do it.” Be sure to get your Plascon 2017 Colour Forecast brochure at the Plascon stand in the Link area at Decorex Joburg.

DECOREX UNVEILS THE KEY APPROACH TO LIVING IN 2016:

THE CONSIDERED HOME “Beauty stems from thought and sensibility, rather than from material wealth.” Italian architect and designer Claudio Silverstrin’s concept of beauty could well be adopted as the mantra for living in 2016.

| 17 | feature

Leader in the décor, design and lifestyle industry, Decorex SA sums up the 2016 global trend, “The Considered Home” which represents a cultural melting pot of decorating genres – the design embodiment of the phrase “global village”. According to Sian Gutstadt, Portfolio Director of Decorex SA, “The essence of the considered home is a well-edited space that is layered, but not cluttered, with a mix of quality high-end and store-bought pieces. The look is coherent but not matchy-matchy, and incorporates pieces from different time periods and even design styles. It also demands that equal attention be paid to wall and floor finishes as well as fittings. At its core it is about quality rather than quantity.”

1. INSPIRATIONS “The Considered Home is less a decorating trend than an approach to living that is based on curating a home environment that exudes quality and individuality,” explains Sandra Jardim, General Manager: Marketing & PR of Decorex SA Portfolio. “It shies away from overly decorated homes that are created as once-off projects and are then simply maintained. The approach requires an investment in quality rather than flashy, short-lived décor fads.” As such, she says, it is not a look you can create instantly: “Curating a living space such as this means you will have to hunt for specific pieces that complement each other, and then layer these over time. It means you’d rather live without a sofa than buy the wrong one.” Individuality is key to the Considered Home and, because in the natural world no two things are identical, so nature serves as a major source of inspiration. In the same way that the complex structure of the veins on each leaf is unique, so no two handcrafted pottery bowls will be identical, nor a pair of chairs constructed by a craftsman – they each have an inimitable character formed by the craftsman’s hands and the natural grain patterns of the wood. “For this look, each item is selected for its intrinsic appeal and its ‘spirit’ or personal meaning, not because it harmonises or blends with a colour scheme,” emphasises Jardim. “It is the contrast and comparison between the diverse elements that creates the power and interest here.”

| 18 | feature

2. DETAIL & DISPLAY It’s said that the divine is in the detail, and nowhere does this statement ring truer than in the Considered Home. “Detailing speaks of how things are made and is a key element of quality. Hand-stitching, dry joinery, hand-spun or -turned details show off the craftsmanship of the maker as well as the time and consideration that has gone into creating a piece,” explains Angela Chatfield, General Manager of Decorex SA. “Pieces that furnish or accessorise your house should be well made with quality materials and finishes,” she advises, adding that, while quality is important, it doesn’t necessarily have to mean expensive. “Well made furniture and even art can be bought from second-hand stores, auctions or even junk shops.” That said, a Considered Home is not just about the furnishing and accessories. “Floor and wall

finishes, fittings such as doors, window frames and ironmongery are as important and deserve equal attention when selected,” she says, noting that considered homes often successfully blend high-end or collectors’ finds with mass-produced retail-store pieces. “Detailing is important not only in furnishing and accessories but also in the spaces themselves,” Chatfield adds. “If you have the luxury of renovating an existing home or building a new house, you should consider details such as how different materials merge (for example, how an engineered hardwood floor meets a wall), how thresholds between inside and out are handled, as well as the choice of door handles and light switches. In short, discover sacred space in the midst of the ordinary and realise that the ordinary has been extraordinary all along.”

| 19 | feature

3. MATERIALS & TEXTURES Texture is important in the considered home because it is associated with one of our primitive instincts. Tactile finishes and surfaces encourage us to explore through our fingertips, to really, physically, feel the difference between a smooth silk, a rough linen and a warm knitted wool. Textures, in other words, provide a stimulus for the sense of touch, which is often neglected in the modern home environment. In addition, the mix of surface textures is as important as colour for emphasising the balance of elements in schemes. Think of the contrasts of rough and smooth, warm and cool and dark and light, advises Gutstadt, who adds that, “in walls and floors, texture creates a canvas for the carefully-selected pieces.” Because textures provide an awareness of the intrinsic qualities of a fabric or piece of furniture, handmade artefacts are key to the considered scheme. Handthrown earthenware, for instance, has a slightly sandy, rough surface. You may be able to see and feel the ridges where the clay has been drawn up on the wheel and so understand the nature of the vessel and appreciate its form. For this reason, integrity and quality are foremost when it comes to choosing furnishings and fabrics for the home. Says Gutstadt: “Opt for the softest cashmere, the finest cotton and the supplest suede to please the senses.”

| 20 | feature

4. LIGHT & COLOUR Although the considered space errs towards minimalism, it is a far cry from the Spartan principles of Zen living. Instead, fabrics and colours are sybaritic in the extreme. Jardim explains: “A home that subscribes to the considered approach will be coloured with myriad tones and variations. For example, wood comes in diverse shades, from the deep black of ebony to the yellow of pine, the red of cherry wood and the white, silvery quality of ash. Stones are the same: compare the solid greyness of granite to the pearly whiteness of marble, or the yellow hues of sandstone.” The easiest way to start with a scheme like this is to choose a plain background for your room and to let the accessories and decorative items bring in the colour, form and pattern, she advises. “Opting for an

uncontrived palette allows for the display of different furnishing styles and for the introduction of pattern,” she says. Adjusting the amount of light that comes into a room will also change its mood and atmosphere. “The best illumination is daylight, a natural phenomenon that should be exploited to the full,” she maintains. “When it comes to artificial lighting, rather than a single light fitting in the centre of a room, the Considered Home utilises a palette of lighting options, which might include pendants, standing lamps, spotlights and LED lighting, to create different moods. Indeed, in the Considered Home, the concept of matching the lighting to your mood is an immensely seductive one.”

| 21 | feature

5. CYCLES & CHANGE “Your house shall not be an anchor but a mast,” said iconic artist-poet Kahlil Gibran. In life, change and versatility are not only inevitable but also essential, and nature gives us the variety we crave. “Let what’s going on outside influence what’s going on inside,” advises Chatfield. “Each season brings a different mood and has an inevitable rhythm, but this is often lost in our modern lives.” An awareness of these seasonal changes allows your home to evolve over time, she explains. “You might change the upholstery on a chair, re-hang an artwork or change some of your room accessories. Be spontaneous and use the seasons and changing light and temperature to act as prompts to reconsider the things around you. Rotate your favourite things from room to

room to keep your home alive and in motion. Use what you already have in a different context and you’ll be surprised at how stimulating your things will look when literally seen in a new light. Scavenge mementoes from nature to create fleeting still-lifes – it is a way of holding onto time and place. Our surroundings hold tremendous power over our moods and emotions. Use that power to positive effect.” Ironically, while change may be the only constant, the Considered Home has an immutability to it, she says: “Because it is not about slavishly following transient trends but rather creating a personal collection of things that you love living with – the look is ultimately enduring and timeless.”

THE BOYS ARE BACK

Everyone is talking about him. He is a man of style and substance, as comfortable at a rugby match as he is at a gallery opening. Able to navigate any social setting, he is informed, intriguing and very much in vogue. He is the new male ideal – the Renaissance man – and he is being celebrated in all his well-groomed glory at Decorex Joburg 2016.

GRAEME WATKINS While the masculine decorating trend has, in the past, been admirably acknowledged at Africa’s premier décor, design and lifestyle exhibition, this year it is reinvented with all the personality and pizzazz that defines new-age metrosexual decorating. Sponsored by The Tile Gallery, suppliers of everything from Travertine tiles and cladding to quality marble and mosaics, the all-new Top Man showcase promises to be a major crowd-puller at Decorex Joburg. The winning Top Man will win a Big Green Egg and a mystery celebrity chef will visit the winner at his home or venue of his choice and prepare a delicious meal, to the value of R28 000, for him and his friends whilst explaining the various features that make this such a sought-after culinary item.

MARK STENT From the eclectic to the contemporary, the Top Man feature will showcase spaces inspired by this stylesavvy modern man – ones that are a far cry from the bachelor pad or lad’s lair of old. One hundred percent “man made”, this exclusive feature sees four local male celebrities each paired with a prominent designer, who will interpret the former’s unique style in the definitive masculine space. The celebrities in question cover the gamut of South Africa’s most recognisable modern men: actor, MC, songwriter and front man of local rock-indie-electro band, The Graeme Watkins Project, Graeme Watkins; DJ, producer, remixer and self-confessed music junkie, Mark Stent; professional freestyle motocross rider, Brendan Potter; and popular radio DJ and self-styled “vlogger” (video blogger), Ian Fraser.

| 22 | feature

BRENDAN POTTER Graeme Watkins burst onto the South African music scene in 2009, when he pushed through to the top three in season five of M-Net Idols. In early 2010, after forming his eponymous band and becoming a regular on the SA gigging scene, he was snapped up by top local TV soap opera, Rhythm City for what was initially to be a brief appearance, but soon became a permanent role. When describing his personal decorating style, Watkins says, “I love vintage elements within a clean-edged modern environment. I’m also very passionate about supporting locally designed, sourced and crafted products. And, I’m a complete and utter tech junkie.” Hailing from the City of Gold, Mark Stent has a love affair with house music which began in his early teens and led to an insatiable obsession with the art of mixing and blending beats. In demand at prestigious clubs all over the country, Stent – who is acclaimed as “the world’s strongest DJ” thanks to his background in competitive bodybuilding – made his international debut at F1 Grand Prix opening parties and at London’s famous Mass Club, and has since enjoyed billing alongside industry greats, such as Maxi Jazz, Fatboy Slim and Chris Lake. One of South Africa’s few professional freestyle motocross athletes, 25 year-old Brendan Potter is currently ranked third in the country in the sport of FMX. “Freestyle motocross has presented me with some once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, and because of this sport, I have been able to travel abroad and meet

IAN F amazing people, all with a common love of FMX,” says Potter. “I hope to grow more into the sport and to take my career as far as my opportunities allow.” When describing his personal style Potter says” After a long day there’s nothing better than enjoying down time in a comfortable space. I would rather be at home on a Saturday evening than out partying so that I can wake up earlier on Sunday and go riding” “My decorating style is simple, functional and quite masculine, with plenty of leather and wood, but also robust enough to withstand the wear and tear of three children,” says DJ Ian Fraser, or Ian F, as he’s known at Joburg radio station Hot 91.9FM. Fraser, who has been in radio since he was 19, describes himself as “messy, creative and always positive”, and cites his Eames chair as his favourite office furnishing. Celebrity credentials aside, however, what’s arguably the best thing about the Top Man feature is the fact that public and corporate proceeds from this exciting installation will go to the charity of each celebrity’s choosing. Visitors who vote by way of donation to their Top Man’s chosen charity also stand a chance to win R30 000-worth of The Tile Gallery Tiles. Don’t miss the new Top Man feature at Decorex Joburg 2016 – four very unique designer-approved spaces, some for work, some for living and some for pure play, but all guaranteed to dazzle visitors with a charm as diverse as the personalities who have inspired them. Beer fridge not included.

SPOTLIGHT

ON

| 25 | feature

The hottest new décor trends as seen at Paris’s famous Maison & Objet design fair in January have been revealed at Decorex Joburg. Reinterpreted for a local audience by designer Claire Clarke of By Dezign Interiors, using the very latest fabric ranges from local textile house, Home Fabrics, these trends will form part of the keenly anticipated Designer Spotlight, one of the undisputed highlights of Africa’s largest décor, design and lifestyle exhibition. “With our Decorex Joburg stand specifically in mind, Claire and I met up at the Parisian show, one of the most important European events for interior design professionals, to scout 2016’s biggest décor and design trends,” says Marc Shotland, Sales and Marketing Director of Home Fabrics. “As a result, our Designer Spotlight showcase exudes pure ‘dolce vita’ – a combination of contemporary fabrics and wallpapers in glamorous metallics, grounded by bold, masculine tones.” “Expect to see the graphic use of black and white shot through with accents of petrol blue and gold, as well as plenty of geometrics, chunky textures, animal print and fur, and fully upholstered furnishings (with even chair legs clad in fabric),” hints Clarke, who started her Bryanston-based company in 2005. Together with her sister, Sophie Kelly, she provides a full-spectrum interior design service to the residential, commercial and hospitality sectors. “Our space features a magnificent pergola daybed and banquette style seating, with an eye-catching trellis design on the ‘ceiling’ and a magnificent gold

vinyl floor, the likes of which have not yet been seen in South Africa,” she continues. “We will be using a statement wallpaper – printed seagrass cloth in gold and black – from Arte International and feature lighting to draw attention to key elements.” “Claire combined a selection of local materials from Home Fabrics and Fabric Library with imported textiles from renowned houses such as Chivasso, Etamine and Osborne & Little,” adds Shotland. “Her signature style speaks volumes about the beauty of understated glamour, which will be evident in abundance on this stand.” While Clarke has elicited inspiration from European trends for her Decorex showcase, her aesthetic is still firmly rooted in South Africa. “We have a huge pool of talent in this country and it’s a great resource to draw from,” she says, adding, “Even internationally, a local flavour is strikingly evident in the designs coming through right now.” When asked to name the key trends for the year, Shotland says: “2016 is redefining luxury with items that tell a story of authenticity and timelessness, yet without being ostentatious. Designs include geometric shapes in fabrics, artisan glass and precious metals. 2015 was all about copper and, while we’ve retained our love of metallics in 2016, our affections have switched to the timeless tones of brass and gold. Whatever your preference, a metallic fabric or wallpaper will always add a touch of interest to the home. Oh, and look out for palm fronds on wallpaper as well as the gracious flamingo captured in original forms and colours,” he adds.

KRAMERVILLE DESIGN DISTRICT

A few decades ago, Kramerville was only populated by a sprinkling of fabric houses, a few bespoke furniture manufacturers and one or two furniture importers along one street of a semi-industrial area. Since then, more and more design and décor firms have gravitated to the area and, nowadays, if you find your way down to Kramerville, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the vibe. This has as much to do with the quality of the stores to be found there as it does with the fact that Kramerville, which is bordered

by Marlboro Road, Katherine Street, South Road and the M1 Freeway, is a City Improvement District (CID). Through the CID, the property owners have spent a lot of time and effort uplifting the area. The streets are patrolled and cleaned regularly and they have embarked on a greening project to bring more atmosphere to the precinct. The fact that many of the original businesses are not only still there, but certainly thriving, speaks volumes. You can now find anything from flooring and Persian carpets, fabrics for

curtains and upholstery, light fittings, African artefacts and Objet d’Art to a wide selection of furniture, antiques, quality beds, kitchen units, fireplaces and a host of interior designers and decorators in Kramerville. If you are looking for a one-stop furniture and decorating hub, then Kramerville will cater for all your needs. This eclectic mix of stores will surely spark your imagination and keep you coming back for more. www.kramerville.org www.twitter.com/Kramerville

THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF

WATER-WISE PLANTS By Ryan Hermanson

As the human population continues to grow and put more and more pressure on every possible resource that we have on this planet, those resources are going to start becoming increasingly critical to a country’s ability to succeed and thrive, and will most certainly become the basis for future world wars! Certainly, water is the most crucial of those resources, and if this resource is abused or mismanaged in any way, widespread suffering and chaos will follow. Our world appears to be heating up year-by-year, and the need for clean drinking water is already very apparent! So, where does that leave us avid garden-lovers, who enjoy flowers and colour and butterflies and buzzy bees? How can we attain these luxuries of life when our well has dried up and water restrictions are firmly in place? I’ll tell you where it leaves us, and you might be thinking it’s all doom and gloom and that it will be the end of gardens forever, but you would be wrong in that

assumption... it leaves us to discover a NEW world, a much more exciting and amazing world where the plants we choose to keep and grow in our gardens will inspire resilience and determination in our own lives! The amazing thing is that there is a whole world of plants that were designed to live on a hot, dry, harsh planet, and now that our environment is hotter and drier than ever before, those plants will become more well-known to the general public and will become preferred over their water-loving counterparts. Welcome to the world of succulents!! Crassulas, Aloes, Agaves, Kalanchoes... these plants will start leading the pack! Once you have entered the world of succulents, you will never return to your old way of thinking, because when you discover how amazing these plants are, how

| 38 | profile

Another amazing thing about succulents is that there are sooooo many of them that you can collect succulents your entire life and still not even scratch the surface of what is growing naturally out there in the wild! Do yourself a favour and go and ‘Google’ the words ‘Crassula’ or ‘Aloe’ or ‘Kalanchoe’ or ‘Sedum’ and see how many different varieties appear on your screen – it’s astonishing!! ... and that’s just what humans have discovered and decided to label. There are numerous varieties still being discovered on a daily basis around the world and, believe me, they’ll find their way onto the internet and into the human consciousness just as quickly! The amazing thing about it is that these plants have been on this planet longer than humans have even existed. tough they are, through extreme weather or lack of water, you will start to view plants in general in a different way altogether! The moment that you realise you don’t have to water your garden anymore, or very little at the most, you will start to have higher expectations for other plants as well. If succulents can look good with no water, never seeming to wilt, and still sending out flowers even in the dead of winter, why can’t other plants be like that?

Just think about how much pressure can be taken off our already fragile water supply if there is a nationwide progression from the water-loving plants that are so common in gardens around South Africa to the hardy drought-tolerant succulents that are mostly born and bred in our country and are certainly more at home than any of the common garden plants that we’ve become used to in our gardens.

They have been plodding along through the most trying of weather conditions – and it is only recently that we have caught on to how amazing they really are! So, don’t you think it’s time to expand your thinking and venture into a world that is both exciting and eyeopening at the same time? Yes, it’s time to turn your attention to the world’s best kept secret... succulents!
