If there’s one thing Marcelle Crowther has in spades, it’s courage. “I’m always game for trying new things,” says the Cape Town based interior designer. “My philosophy is to give my clients something unique; something created specifically for them. My business offering is, therefore, the absolute antithesis of the chain store look.” It’s this tailor-made, ‘once-off’ aesthetic that Crowther, who owns the award-winning Hocus Interior Design Studio, will put into play at Decorex Cape Town, where she has been invited to create the prestigious themed feature. For her keenly anticipated installation, Crowther will be working her designer magic in line with an all-black theme. “Its intense drama and potency make black an incredibly exciting colour to work with, but it is also a very challenging shade,” she says. “An all-black interior presents the biggest challenge of all as you cannot rely on, for instance, patterning to add interest. Instead, you need to work with fabric textures, wall finishes, furniture patinas and lighting to create subtle layers of excitement.” “An all-black palette also throws into stark relief the ‘bone structure’ of the scheme,” adds Crowther. “This all-out focus on good design

principles is a perfect fit with the philosophy of my business: key to the Hocus strategy is to plan with focus and audacity, and to execute with vigor and discipline. The results are carefully conceived interiors that always represent a departure from the norm but are also timeless and enduring.” Guaranteed to be a true scene stealer, the interior designer’s installation will no doubt set a striking tone for the rest of the show, which, this year, is themed ‘Decorex: The Home of Great Ideas’. With many of the Mother City’s leading designers and decorators, like Crowther, taking part in Decorex Cape Town, the exhibition is set to once again be an inspiring showcase of the very latest lifestyle trends. Crowther, who obtained her Bachelor of Science (Home Economics) degree from the University of Stellenbosch, currently employs two qualified interior designers and two assistant staff members at her Green Point and Bellville-based consultancies. “I am fortunate to have a team that is aligned around the common purpose of creating different, yet stylish and lasting interiors,” she says, adding that the core belief of Hocus Interior Design Studio is that great interior design should not be limited to a privileged few. “All proud house owners, young or old, should get the outside opinion

of a professional, even if this is done in phases,” she advises. “First for instance, the design, planning and budget can be implemented, and the rest can be done either room by room or element by element: paint work, then flooring, lighting and so on.

“AN ALL-BLACK PALETTE ALSO THROWS INTO STARK RELIEF THE ‘BONE STRUCTURE’ OF THE SCHEME,” In the long run, an interior that is well planned and studiously executed will not date, which means that, in the end, it is actually more cost-effective than an unplanned interior.” A former recipient of the coveted Best Stand Award at Decorex, Hocus Interior Design Studio offers a full turnkey service for both residential and commercial projects. Says Crowther: “We accept all types of work, from offices, restaurants, boutique hotels, apartments and houses, to holiday homes, wine-tasting rooms and building reception areas – it keeps the process interesting to have new challenges all the time.”

SPOTLIGHT ON…. “Big, brave, saturated colour, an embroidering of the contemporary and the traditional, and a scattering of one-of-a-kind pieces collected from far and wide - in short, gathered, comfortable and well loved.” This is how Cape Town designer Sarah Ord describes her sophisticated up-to-the-minute signature look, which has garnered so much attention. And it is this unique aesthetic that visitors to Decorex Cape Town can expect to see at the special installation that she has created. Sarah collaborated with leading local textile house, Home Fabrics, on a space which she was invited to create, in this year’s prestigious Decorex Designer Spotlight. “Mine is very much an anything-goes approach,” explains the designer, who describes the look of her Decorex stand as “tropical arbor – a sexy, lush and colourful nod to warmer climes – think mint julep afternoons on the verandah.”

To create the look, Sarah used choice fabrics and wallpapers from Designers Guild’s Shanghai Garden and Christian Lacroix’s Nouveaux Mondes collections, both of which have been launched recently at Home Fabrics. “I am hugely inspired by fabrics,” says Sarah. “I often start a scheme with just one ‘wow’ fabric and go from there. For my Decorex installation, these particular lavish, richly-hued imported fabrics and wall coverings are featured in the upholstering and soft furnishings of an exuberantly ‘leafy’ dining and entertaining space.” “Visitors to Decorex Cape Town will feel as if they have entered a home situated somewhere in the Bahamas,” says Marc Shotland, Group PR and Marketing Executive of Home Fabrics, who adds that the collaboration with Sarah Ord Interiors is the culmination of a long and fruitful relationship. “Sarah has been a client of Home Fabrics for many years and, with our focus for 2015 being squarely on pattern and colour, we knew there was no one better for this project.” Colour and graphic prints – “a lively mix of vibrancy and happiness” – are key fabric trends this year, explains Shotland. “We’re talking bold, defined prints which can either be combined with coordinated fabrics or wallpapers or, for a more subdued look, mixed with plains. Colour on colour is another big trend currently coming through, as is big, fruity and feather-themed prints.” “Sarah has a phenomenal way of mixing pattern on pattern, bold colour and eclectic pieces, all of which come together to create a visually formidable setting,” Shotland continues. “And she brings a unique, decidedly quirky eye to design. Her choice and use of fabrics and wallpapers demonstrates just how far boundaries can – and should – be pushed.” With a 10-year business that comprises both a design consultancy and a fabrics and furnishings shop, Ord brings a wealth of experience to her Decorex Designer Spotlight showcase. “This is an exciting opportunity not only to work with Home Fabrics, whose products are a perfect fit for my decorating style, but also to be part of a wider showcase of local décor and design talent which, I believe, has such a lot to offer

the interiors market right now,” she says, adding that South African craft and craftsmanship is truly worldclass. “We try to always incorporate the work of local artists and artisans into our projects.” Sian Gutstadt, General Manager of the Decorex SA Portfolio, agrees: “While Decorex is the premier platform for the country’s emerging design talent, which is incredibly exciting at the moment, it is the established designers, manufacturers and retailers who, ultimately, set the bar. Teaming a leading designer with a prominent fabric house, as is the case in the Decorex Designer Spotlight, provides definitive proof of the impossibly high creative standards laid down by these design forerunners.” While Decorex Cape Town certainly ranks as a prospective highlight in Ord’s year, 2015 will also see the opening of the much-anticipated Stack Club, a private members’ club in Cape Town whose interiors are being given the designer’s magic touch. For Home Fabrics, Decorex SA and its affiliated 100% Design South Africa are calendar highpoints, as is the opening in July of a brand new showroom in Kramerville, Johannesburg.

2015’s biggest kitchen trends, not to mention the very latest state-of-the-art kitchen products and appliances, are on show at this year’s edition of Decorex Cape Town. Sponsored by world-leading kitchen-systems supplier Franke, the Franke ‘Make it Wonderful’ Kitchen Design Project promises a look at revolutionary developments in kitchen-design thinking, giving practical application to new directions in ergonomics, greening, space efficiency and more. Endorsed by the Kitchen Specialists Association of South Africa (KSA), the expo’s must-see feature has Cape Town’s top kitchen manufacturers showcasing four very unique kitchens, each fitted with products from Franke’s award-winning range. The stands will be judged by a panel of experts and the creator of the winning kitchen design at each show will receive a prize of R10 000 worth of Franke products. “What Decorex Cape Town continues to show us is that South Africa has immense talent capable of setting standards on a global design platform,” says Sian Steyn, General Manager of the Decorex

SA Portfolio. “This collaboration with Franke Kitchen Systems encourages local kitchen designers to flaunt their skill, and ‘Make it Wonderful’ in the process.” Franke SA’s Marketing Co-coordinator, Leigh-Anne Casey, explains further: “The ‘Make it Wonderful’ slogan essentially refers to the founding principle of the Franke brand. By ‘wonderful’, we’re talking about that magic element that turns the everyday into the extraordinary and, in the kitchen, that special ingredient that turns work into play and a house into a home.” Stephanie Forbes, National Manager of the Kitchen Specialists Association (KSA) said the KSA was excited to be involved with Franke and Decorex SA on this innovative project. “As the only industry body that exists to support the kitchen industry, the KSA has always prided itself on having members that strive for the best quality and service. Now, as part of the Franke ‘Make it Wonderful’ Kitchen Design Project, they will get the opportunity to truly push the boundaries of design. It is vital to the KSA that our name is recognisable to consumers as a mark of

professionalism, safety and recourse. By endorsing a project like this, we not only heighten consumer awareness about the KSA, and what we do, but also support the industry as they strive to showcase exactly what the South African kitchen industry is capable of.” One of the biggest trends in kitchen design over recent years has been the shift from pure utilitarian workspace to social living room and this essential aspect of all our lifestyles will form an important part of the Project. Four hard-hitting kitchen designs are the focus of the feature. Says Casey: “With living space at a premium nowadays, compact kitchens are an increasing reality, presenting the challenge of creating functional yet beautiful small work places fitted with hardworking multifunctional tools. The key here is to not allow space constrictions to limit the possibilities of design and, instead, to create kitchens in which performance and aesthetics are in perfect harmony.” Add to smart design, versatile ergonomics, continues Casey: “Another major trend is the current focus on efficiency, where every area within the kitchen – and

every product in it – is maximised to the full. Take the crucial positioning of the sink and cooking appliances, for instance – these are the most utilised areas in the kitchen, yet, all too often, they are neglected in the design. Good ergonomics is about creating a seamless flow from one workspace to the next and, indeed, a seamless flow between the kitchen itself and the rest of the house.” Greening is another of the big themes: “Think recycled materials and earth-friendly products, and plenty of natural light, with the aim of literally bringing the garden into the kitchen,” hints Casey. And, in line with eco-chic design, expect an emphasis on timber in natural, earthy tones, textures and finishes. “Authenticity is the abiding theme here,” Casey explains, adding that the intended look is warm and inviting on the one hand, and deeply personal on the other. That said, Casey is quick to point out that a return to nature by no means signals a disregard for the conveniences of modern-day living. “Technology plays a key role in our lives and its entry into our kitchens continues unabated,” she maintains.
