veryone is trying to attain a sense of balance in the world, but this is becoming more difficult as the demands on time, attention and space are increasing. There are always more layers being added to lifestyles, to roles in society as well as the digitisation and environmental challenges. As a way to embrace this constant movement, we are forced to create a space that reflects our unique Rhythm of Life. Now in its 25th year, South Africa’s premier décor, design and lifestyle exhibition – is bringing together all the right colours, designs, fabrics and inspiration to open up a path of harmonious creativity suited to each individual’s rhythm. By channelling the demands of everyday life into a productive, embracing space, they will get the chance to discover their own unique style, their #rhythmoflife. When conceptualising this year’s theme, we focused on what influences trends within the industry. At the heart of it, it’s our lifestyles that push and dictate trends. Everything that happens in our daily lives impacts us in a number of subtle ways. The constant push and pull of work and play, the tension between our public image and private self. Our inner sense of health, prosperity and happiness…all these are being put to the test. And the way we deal with this is by taking these outside influences, channelling them into something meaningful for us and expressing our rhythm of life in our own spaces. This allows for a harmonious life, which offers the self a sense of revival, replenishment and relief. To mark our 25th year we planned a really strong, décor-focused show which maintains the high calibre of craftsmanship for which Decorex is renowned. This year’s exciting line up includes the 5th edition of South Africa’s leading product design showcase, 100% Design South Africa, treating visitors to an inspired display of furniture design, textiles, lighting, wallpaper and product design from more than 100 local and 4

international exhibitors – all in Hall 1. We have also launched a new trade show – The International Sourcing Fair, the only International Exhibition in Africa focusing on sourcing and purchasing retail and commercial products for the home, office, retail, gift and hospitality sectors in Hall 6. We are always re-inventing, re-investing and changing to suit the constantly evolving décor industry and all its associated trends. It is important for us to know exactly what is happening on a global level from a décor viewpoint, as well as within the exhibition space. We have always worked hard to remain ahead of the game in South Africa, establishing ourselves as leaders in both the décor and exhibition fields and a large part of this is ensuring sound return-oninvestment to our exhibitors. Celebrations at Decorex SA

ynonymous with ground-breaking concepts in décor, design and lifestyle elements, Decorex SA has managed to keep ahead of the field by constantly introducing innovative features and showcasing the best of South Africa’s décor artists. This year, the flagship exhibition, Decorex Joburg, is celebrating its 25th year. At the start The first Decorex exhibition was held at Johannesburg’s Gallagher Estate in 1994 in one show hall featuring 144 exhibitors. Themed ‘Harmony in Colour’, the inaugural décor and design show attracted 26 000 visitors and the popular exhibition continued to grow in numbers and exhibitors from then. The 2017 Decorex Joburg exhibition spanned eight halls at the original venue – now Gallagher Convention Centre – with more than 700 exhibitors showcasing their quality furniture, products and accessories to 55 0000 inspired visitors.

Returning performers In addition to the innovative style which has set the industry standard in décor exhibitions, Decorex Joburg has a number of welcome constants forming part of the show’s fabric. Title sponsors, Plascon, have supported the annual exhibitions for the past 23 years and continue to play a vital role within the exhibition space. The 2018 Plascon installation promises another colourful décor feature with on-trend design inspiration with expert product guidance creating an enticing space for all visitors. Another prominent name associated with Decorex Joburg is exhibition patron, Stephen Falcke. An awardwinning interior designer, Falcke has showcased his globally-inspired talents at the event for the past 24 years. This year will see Falcke return to his favourite design showcase, taking on another inspired project that keeps the Decorex brand so in demand. To have all these amazing designs and different people that make up our interesting trade family, all under one roof, is really such an exciting experience, and I look forward to it every year.” Innovative growth The growth of Decorex Joburg has seen an extension of the trade element to include 100% Design South Africa in 2014. This leading design space features more than 130 local and international exhibitors displaying high-end furniture, textiles, lighting, wallpaper and product design. It also includes 60 enterprises from the South African Craft Collective (SACC), a proudly South African feature of handmade home, gift and fashion accessories suited to the local and international market. This year, Decorex Joburg will welcome the inclusion of the International Sourcing Fair (ISF), an exhibition space dedicated to sourcing and purchasing of retail and commercial products, exclusively focusing on the home, gift, office and hospitality sectors. Behind the scenes Decorex SA is backed by globally-renowned exhibitions company, Reed Exhibitions, a leading global events’ organisation with more than 100 years of combined industry experience. Internationally-renowned designer, Dorothy Van’t Riet of the Sandton-based Dorothy Van’t Riet Design and Décor Consultants will be creating a rejuvenating space for this year’s Decorex Designer Spotlight feature at the 25th Decorex Joburg taking place at Gallagher Convention Centre from 8 to 12 August.

nternationally-renowned designer, Dorothy Van’t Riet and her team from Sandton-based Dorothy Van’t Riet Design and Décor Consultants, have curated living space that replenishes and rejuvenates the soul at the 2018 Decorex Designer Spotlight feature. This unique installation forms part of the Decorex Joburg 25th milestone programme, presented by Plascon, that promises visitors an incredible line-up of #rhythmoflife features, taking place at Gallagher Convention Centre from 8 to 12 August. “We are so excited to announce Dorothy Van’t Riet as this year’s featured designer,” said Sian Cullingworth, Portfolio Director at Decorex SA. “She has been with Decorex Joburg from its inception and always brings an incredible energy and completely original interpretation of the styles and trends to the show. We cannot wait to reveal what she’s planned for this milestone exhibition.” In the run-up to Decorex Joburg, Dorothy Van’t Riet agreed to share some background and insights as a fun taster for the Decorex audience. Where are you based? Dorothy Van’t Riet Design and Décor Consultants (DVR) is based in Sandton. However, I travel extensively and work on projects locally and internationally. I’ve embraced modern technology and am able to communicate with my office – even from obscure corners of the globe – thus being able to keep my finger on the pulse of the various Design Projects we are running. What is your signature style? My signature style is one of timeless beauty, creativity and individualism. It has life, soul, authenticity, originality and energy; a sense of rhythm and movement. It’s a style design of intention, thought and detail. My background in psychology gives me insight into clients’ needs which assist in creating unique spaces. This is a movement away from interior copying and pasting and trying to live someone else’s life.

The creation of beautiful spaces is about encouraging our clients to find their personal rhythm between much-needed quietness to the joyfulness of deliberate movement. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about flowing with this rhythm which leads to a life of passion, purpose, fulfilment and inner joy. Could you take us through your design career? DVR celebrates 30 years in the interior design industry this year. We have completed a wide range of notable projects, both nationally and internationally, for corporate, residential and hotel clients. I have steered the company from a very small beginning to a position of strength in the competitive design industry. I still have fond memories of 30 years ago when I began my design business. My blue van could be seen driving along the highways and byways, dropping off fabrics at suppliers and delivering projects across our country and the borders into Africa. Although some of the years have been tough, my passion, my deep faith, love for design and my clients, and my trust in God have carried me through. The knowledge that what I do is what I was created and designed to do. This has given me a sense of purpose and fulfilment in my life. www.decorex.co.za

Could you tell us a bit about your family? When I started in design, I was a single mom with two little girls â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Samantha and Nicki-Anne - both my pride and joy. This was before I met my husband, Bernard Deeb, who is now an integral part of DVR. Samantha is a successful architect in Cape Town with her own business. Samantha and I have worked on many exiting projects together over the years in Malaysia, Nigeria, Botswana, London and other exciting places. Nicki-Anne is an amazing human rightsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; lawyer, who works to change lives and communities. Could you explain your relationship with Decorex? For me, DVR and Decorex have gone hand-in-hand. I started exhibiting at Decorex Joburg 25 years ago and it has offered a unique opportunity to communicate with my clients, the public and the rest of the design fraternity. I find that it is a wonderful opportunity to engage with prospective clients for the first time amidst the creative hub, and I still have clients from the early days of Decorex. I love the energy and excitement of Decorex - from the creative design meetings with my team interpreting the themes, to the excitement of the stand build-up and the final hour before the fabulous Angela Chatfield Decorex Joburg Show Journal 2018

firmly walks the aisles, ensuring all exhibitors are ready for the enthusiastic and expectant public. Being involved with Decorex is both inspiring and stimulating. The coming together and networking of like-minded people adds another dimension to me as an interior designer. It makes me feel part of a larger body of creators, which gives me a sense of fulfilment that reinforces my life choice of interior design. What can visitors expect at this year’s Decorex Designer Spotlight? I believe that the DVR stand should create an experience and present a current 2018 design trend. I look forward to the opportunity of creating the ‘WOW’ factor to visitors entering the hall and setting the tone for design excellence, anticipation and excitement. I am creating a Living Space to replenish the energy the internet takes away; a place to enjoy simple pleasures. I am creating a place to recharge and connect with oneself and others. Turning off phones or resisting social media is ‘unplugging’ but this is not the same as recharging. Unplugging disconnects, re-charging fills up. In music, rhythm is characterised by movement; by the regulated succession of similar and opposing elements. In a life that constantly bombards us with change and the unexpected, we need rhythm to establish order and create a sense of wellbeing. The beauty of creating rhythm in interior design is that this can have a hugely beneficial effect on the rhythm 10

and quality of people’s lives. The Decorex Designer Spotlight space will incorporate soothing rhythm, as well as a more demanding, progressive rhythm. What trends can visitors look forward to? It is always an exciting creative challenge to use the latest design trends and products into a confined space. The trends that we will be using include: • Aspirational spaces – spaces with experience and feeling • There is a resurgence of retro glamour. • Extra-large pieces of wall art, bold patterned wall papers or wall cladding. • Colour – more is more with colour this year. Colours of saffron and teal with a touch of the pantone colour, purple. • Mixed metallics • A feature sofa holding centre stage. • Geometric designs – adding a modern simplicity. • Dark woods in both furniture and wall cladding. • Texture – creating a warm, cosy and layered look. • The use of screens inspired by the new Design Museum in London. • The use of tropical plants for impact. • The artistic and stylised use of lighting is functional and also creates ambience, soul, energy and dynamism. • A rug of beauty and intensity. www.decorex.co.za

Walk into the world of Stephen Falcke at Decorex Joburg

is creations are as bold and interesting as his personality, and this year, the award-winning interior designer and patron of Decorex Joburg, Stephen Falcke, is drawing on his experience within the industry to curate a masterpiece space. Featured at the 25th Decorex Joburg, presented by Plascon, Falcke’s design will form an intricate part of this incredible décor, design and lifestyle exhibition.

“I’ve been a part of Decorex since its inception and it is truly an honoured position to be patron of this incredible exhibition,” enthused Falcke. “To have all these amazing designs and different people that make up our interesting trade family, all under one roof, is really such an exciting experience, and I look forward to it every year.” Falcke has an illustrious career spanning various continents. Graduating from the Chelsea School of Art in London, he worked for the famed English decorator, David Hicks, before returning to South Africa where he collaborated with Lionel Levin before establishing his own design organisation. His unharnessed talent has launched him across the globe with his work featuring on the covers of various international magazines including America’s Architectural Digest, French and Italian Vogue as well as French Ella. Recognition of his design skill was sealed when he received the Andrew Martin Designer of the World Award, also known as ‘the Oscars of the design world’. However, one of his annual industry highlights is crafting something new for Decorex Joburg. And, for the 2018 edition, Falcke will be welcoming visitors into ‘The World of Design – Stephen’s Way’. 14

Award-winning interior designer and patron of Decorex Joburg, Stephen Falcke’s creation at the 2017 Decorex Joburg show. Falcke will be drawing on his experience within the industry to curate another masterpiece space at the 25th Decorex Joburg taking place at Gallagher Convention Centre from 8 to 12 August. “To celebrate this milestone at Decorex Joburg, I’m looking back over my career and all my creations for Decorex to formulate a truly inspired installation,” he explained. “Visitors will be taken on a journey through time through a visualisation of my ideas and thoughts on interiors and trends, from 25 years ago through to today.” He said every year, the exhibition was about ‘showing, learning and creating’, always evolving and growing across spheres while maintaining the core quality that makes it such a popular event. “It’s always a really inspirational time, experiencing Decorex Joburg, with new colours, trends and

designs from across the globe all converging in one beautiful space. I’m delighted to witness the reaction to this feature and I’m sure the visitors will not be disappointed.” Commenting on Falcke’s 25th creation, Sian Cullingworth, Portfolio Director at Decorex SA, said: “There is no doubt that Stephen is in a league of his own when it comes to design, and it is always a revelation to witness his Decorex feature every year. In this digitised world, nature will branch out to include virtual reality wonderlands with the digital now moving into the physical, creating a ‘phygital’ design. An interesting contrast is created by the juxtaposition of the man-made creation and the natural. The psychotropic trend is defined by vibrant palettes; vivid tropical patterns and digitised prints; lush, botanical themes which take on a heightened, near-synthetic form and motifs with a hallucinogenic quality.
