t’s only March and already we know that 2014 is going to be a crazy year. With so much information coming at us, all the time, we’ve decided to theme this year’s Decorex exhibitions, Design Your Life. At a time when we’re faced with a new trend every day, the team at Decorex SA has made it their mission to make it as simple as possible for all our visitors to find and create the the space of their dreams - no-one else’s. We’re seeing the rise of the individual and look forward to giving you everything you need, under one roof, to express your own style as only you can. We hope you enjoy this issue of Detail, filled with ideas, inspiration and a comprehensive list of services and suppliers in the décor and design industry. Take it home with you, use it and – if you lose it – don’t stress because you can also download the Detail app on your tablet for the digital version. Even tell your friends who didn’t make it to the exhibition that they can also enjoy a bit of lifestyle inspiration courtesy of Decorex Durban. Also, please note that we’re regionalising Detail magazine these days. That means all the contacts listed in this issue are available in Durban. Cape Town and Joburg décor listings will appear in the magazines distributed at those exhibitions and the app will carry three versions of the magazine. Enjoy! Jacquie

and seeing everything come together is extremely rewarding! WHAT IS THE SECRET TO DECOREX SA’S SUCCESS?
A NEW FACE Meet Sian Steyn, General Manager of Decorex SA portfolio, who stepped into the hot seat a few months ago. WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR JOB? Dealing with the ‘postshow’ blues. No matter how successful a show is, it is always difficult to see it being broken down. Those few days after a show can be a bit disheartening after so much effort and time has been spent on execution. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT IT? Definitely being on site with the whole Decorex SA team. After months of hard work and preparation, seeing the exhibition in all its glory take shape, gives us a massive sense of pride. It is a bit like a theatrical production
Decorex Joburg has grown in size and authority, despite the challenging economic environment and increasing competition. Our success has been crafted around our dynamic team, partners, sponsors and exhibitors. Decorex SA has been a successful brand in South Africa because it has not only grown with its market but gained status as the market leader within the exhibition industry. As the demands, needs and interests of our consumers have changed, so too has Decorex SA. DÉCOR AND DESIGN IS ALL ABOUT KEEPING UP TO DATE. HOW DO YOU REINVENT THE LOOK AND FEEL OF THE EXHIBITIONS EVERY YEAR? Research is essential. Our creative team is constantly researching global trends to ensure that we are the trend setters in Africa. We are always aware of the current décor and design trends and showcase them in all the feature areas created by the Decorex SA team. I believe it is just as important to know the latest exhibition trends and that our execution is on an international level. This is what makes us the premier show in Africa.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ON THE MORNING OF A NEW SHOW STARTING? Completely excited and exhilarated. The best moments are those few seconds before opening the show to our visitors. Seeing the crowds of people queuing to see what we have on display is extremely gratifying. WHAT IS YOUR BEST DECOREX MEMORY? The first Decorex SA exhibition I was involved in. I started in April 2011 and Decorex Cape Town was taking place a month later. Talk about a whirlwind month: Trying to understand my new role, the company, the exhibition itself and getting to know the team. From the moment I arrived in Cape Town it was remarkable, seeing everything come together, the buildup of the stands, understanding the quality of the exhibition, and of course bonding with the phenomenal group of women who put the show together – my team. WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING IF YOU WEREN’T MANAGING DECOREX SA? Definitely something to do with outer space! Perhaps I’d be an astronomer since I am obsessed with stars and planets and find all things space-related absolutely fascinating.

Renowned for his inimitable sense of glamour, interior designer Stephen Falcke has put SA design firmly on the global stage. As a patron of Decorex SA, he’s been an ardent supporter of the show since its inception, and he’s set to launch his first book on interiors early next year. We talk to this national treasure about his latest projects, and look back over two decades of design by Tess Paterson
master of
DESIGN When Stephen Falcke says he’s busy, it means that he’s working on 29 top end residential projects in a single year. He’s just stepped off a plane from Aspen where he installed a skiing villa. Next he’s off to London where on-going projects include a Grade 11 listed house by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, and a many-storeyed period home which covers a substantial chunk of Belgrave Square. “The cantilevered staircase had a weight limit,” he says of the latter. “So we hoisted up each of the antiques by crane.” While most normal people would be daunted by all this high-end juggling , Stephen clearly loves every moment of the process. It all started out at the Chelsea School of Art where he studied

interior design, followed by a stint working for English guru David Hicks. Returning home, he was mentored by designer Lionel Levin, before branching out on his own. Bestowed with numerous international accolades, he was awarded the Andrew Martin designer of the year 1999. “I’m a purist and a classicist at heart,” he admits, “but I do love a twist.” An understanding of proportion is another of Stephen’s fortes, and he’s insistent that good art and high quality furniture are the cornerstones of beautiful interiors. “Add to that a sense of the unexpected and you can’t go wrong.” Throughout his career, Stephen has retained an extraordinary ability to create vastly divergent looks. There’s a London apartment, for instance, that’s clad head to toe in Robert Kime fabrics. Then there’s Carolyn Steyn’s vibrant new party space in upbeat brights, or a spectacularly pared down Camps Bay bungalow clad in soothing greys and whites. “I’ve

just finished a re-build of my Parktown North home,” he adds. “I found it incredibly challenging to furnish and someone commented that they expected it to be a lot grander. But it’s definitely my dream space.” Stephen recalls the first stand he did for Decorex Joburg 20 years ago. “I remember it was vivid pinks, oranges and reds – all in silks and mixed in with traditional pieces. It’s a show that has remained very close to my heart, and I think as South Africans we’ve made the rules and broken them, and come out on top. Import-wise, our industry is restricted to certain levels due to prices, so the positive challenge lies in creating original looks across a range of items. For me, one of the greatest strengths of the show is the presence of fine, hand crafted South African objects. These beautiful pieces can take their place anywhere in the world, and mix phenomenally well with different styles.” Here at home, Stephen continues to work on Douw Steyn’s vast new development north of Joburg. He’s also planning the launch of his much-anticipated book early next year, featuring 40 spectacular homes in SA and abroad. “It’s been a wonderful journey, often dealing with two or three generations of families. I love making the absolute best of a brief and taking it to its limit, but you’re only ever as good as your last job.” www.stephenfalcke.co.za

COLOUR
NATION 2014 Plascon’s yearly colour forecast defines the way we see the world. With four distinct colour palettes, it has been keeping South Africans abreast of global colour trends since 1999 and this year’s central theme of Colour Nation refers to the way in which colour defines our identities, our world and our experience of it.
colour forecast | 16
URBAN TRIBE is a response to the growing trend towards national pride – especially amongst the BRICS nations. With countries like South Africa and Brazil coming to the fore as global centres of design, their unique aesthetics are being showcased around the world. Urban Tribe expresses this with a warm and grounded palette of contemporary brights, plus gold and black accents.

17|
colour forecast | 18
SECOND NATURE takes a new look at our relationship with the natural world. As more and more people live in cities, the urban becomes our key reference point, and combining this with the natural world becomes vital to keep our lives balanced. This sentiment is captured in a bright, vibrant palette of greens and blues, activated by a bright yellow accent.

CALM CONTRAST tracks the evolution of pastels in modern design, showing how they’ve move on from being purely “feminine” colours. This palette shows the combination of classic pastels with grounding neutrals, plus dark blue and copper, creating a balanced, contemporary feeling.
colour forecast | 22
INNER SPACE is inspired by the ways in which we use sanctuary environments to rest and reflect in a busy world. Drawing additional colour inspiration from the stars and skies above us to enhance the contemplative mood, the theme is expressed through a collection of neutrals and blues for a deep, tonal palette.

In an effort to keep up with the ever-changing world of trends, the décor world has responded with a renewed interest in lasting designs from skilled craftsmen, and a return to the motif – re-interpreted in contemporary ways. From tribalism to texture, lighting to sofas, the ‘now’ look is experimental and confident – with heaps of glamour thrown in. by Tess Paterson

TIMELESS MATERIALS Fine craftsmanship has never been more sought after. Not only are these ageold processes beautiful and durable, but the end product is a breath of fresh air among the ubiquitous and mass produced. Sebastian Herkner’s Bell series for Classicon, including tables and lamps, combines the fragility of hand-blown glass with a brass or copper frame. www.sebastianherkner.com METALLIC EDGE From walls to furniture, the irresistible shimmer of silver, gold and copper is the simplest way to bring high glamour to interiors. Marco Braga’s quilted leather ottomans for Bisazza typify the trend, as does Nika Zupanc’s simple Golden Chair for Moooi. Poppy Room wallpaper by Miss Print from Black Fabrics.

GONE TRIBAL Inspired by the decorative traditions of Africa, the impact and energy of this look is beautifully suited to contemporary schemes. Ikats continue to hold their own, from bold contrasty prints to more subtle impressions. Ottoman in Robert Allen ikat available at Black Fabrics. ALL STITCHED UP Steeped in the past and vibrantly coloured, tapestry accessories are back on the design radar. We love the quirky cool of the Home cushion by Committee for The Rug Company – a hand-woven wool Aubusson with silk appliqué. And who could say no to Paul Smith’s Birdie Blossom scatter, a mod nod to tradition in wool tapestry? www.therugcompany.com

SURFACE TEXTURE Whether it’s a mix of super-soft velvets or wall covering with a subtle relief, texture lends the X factor when it comes to really interesting interiors. BOLD BLOOMS Statement florals are here to stay - the bigger and brighter, the better. Marcel Wanders pulls out all the stops with his Bloem Rosso mural for Bisazza, while every fabric house worth its salt has a gorgeous selection from stylised motifs to traditional floral prints.
BOLD SHAPES Call it a reaction to the recession or just plain joie de vivre, but furniture shapes are taking on bold, over scaled forms. We’re mad about the tongue-in-cheek drama of the Labyrinth chair by Studio Job for Moooi. Marcel Wanders’ Cloud Sofa has a sense of humour too. www.moooi.com
CLUSTERED PENDANT LIGHTS Happily, this elegant trend persists, with pendants in all manner of materials suspended at varying heights. Tom Dixon’s new Cell Tall Pendant is crafted from layers of finely etched, polished brass. www.tomdixon.net

MOTIF MOJO Pattern takes on an even more prominent role, as designers explore the visual power of the motif. Whether inspired by natural forms or by ancient craftsmanship, the results are stunningly contemporary and versatile. Boussac and Larsen, available at Mavromac explore this to great effect. WHO ARE MAKERS OF STUFF? We’re a small Joburg-based design studio that tackles all types of design projects. As far as possible, we source our materials from the Gauteng area, and we collaborate with a fantastic network of local craftsmen and suppliers YOUR CLOUD LIGHT WAS A HUGE HIT AT DESIGN INDABA 2013, HOW HAVE YOU ADAPTED THE DESIGN? We’ve perfected our colouring process. What started out in a raw wood form can now be matched to any Pantone colour, and we also offer metallics. For instance you could finish the inside in copper, and paint the outside teal. There are endless permutations. WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX? I make ice-cream. It’s a challenge to perfect new flavours and my latest is Jalapeno. www.mosproducts.co.za

IT’S HOT IN THE KITCHEN COLOUR POP
“Our younger market in particular is looking for strong colour accents, without compromising on the longevity of the design,” says Sergio Polita of Snaidero Kitchens. “The Code kitchen, for instance, has a focus on clever open storage, including bookshelves. Boxes in solid ash, painted to a chosen finish, are an excellent way of adding colour to an otherwise neutral space.” www.snaidero.com
THE MOBILE KITCHEN
“The b2 presents probably the most compact kitchen design of our time,” says Colin Lee of bulthaup. Open and portable, it’s a combination of workbench, kitchen tool cabinet and appliance housing cabinet. Depending on your needs, it can be added to and configured to suit your space – a clever mix of elemental form and rational function. www.bulthaup.co.za

SLEEK AND MODERN
“The new contemporary kitchen is all about beautiful textures,” says Philip Richards of blu_line. “Technology is encouraging a modernist look, but we’re finding that clients don’t want complete minimalism. Here we’ve combined surfaces of Caesarstone, high gloss charcoal lacquer, oak veneer and mirror detail. The result is richly layered with a sense of warmth, yet still highly contemporary.” www.blu-line.co.za
COUNTRY CHIC
Shaker style cabinetry, satin-finish ducoed doors and simple hardware give this open plan kitchen its relaxed, country feel. “Subtle tones imply comfort in that they’re ‘lived in’ and easy on the eye,” says John Dammermann of Easylife Kitchens. The aqua-coloured island with a dark Caesarstone top adds to the calm, classical feel. www.easylifekitchens.co.za
