e’re in a celebratory mood at Detail, marking 20 years of the fabulous Decorex Joburg exhibition as well as the unveiling of yet another beautiful Plascon Colour Forecast. The moody blue cover of this issue is straight from their 2014 forecast and if that’s the chic way colour’s going next year, we can’t wait! We hope you enjoy this wonderful resource filled with ideas, inspiration and a comprehensive list of services and suppliers in the décor and design industry. Take it home with you, use it and – if you lose it – don’t stress because you can also download the Detail app on your tablet for the digital version. Even tell your friends who didn’t make it to the exhibition that they can also enjoy a bit of lifestyle inspiration courtesy of Decorex Joburg. For the first time this year, we’re regionalising Detail magazine. That means all the contacts listed in this issue are available in Gauteng. Durban and Cape Town décor listings will appear in the magazines distributed at those exhibitions and the app will carry three versions of the magazine. Enjoy!

his year marks the 20th anniversary of Decorex Joburg – most certainly a milestone to celebrate for many different reasons.
Firstly, there is the incredible achievement of having grown this exhibition from its launch size of 144 exhibitors in one hall at Gallagher, to the magnificent Decorex Joburg that we all know today: More than 700 exhibitors spread across the full six halls that Gallagher has to offer – and more than 50 000 visitors through the gate. We would not have done it without a lot of support, loyalty and encouragement.
MANY HAPPY RETURNS!
A message from Thebe Exhibitions and Projects MD Carol Weaving to mark Decorex Joburg’s 20th birthday
Firstly, to our headline sponsors, Plascon, particularly their colour manager Anne Roselt: You have been with us right from the start and believed in Decorex SA every step of the way. Thank you for sticking with us and for always driving the Decorex team to ever greater heights with your boundless creativity. And to our media partner M-Net: Thanks to you, every year we are able to speak to the Decorex SA market in the comfort of their own homes, plus we will always be grateful that through our partnership with the M-Net Cares initiative we, too, are able to make a difference to those less fortunate than us.
And the biggest thank you of all to you, our loyal exhibitors and visitors, without whom Decorex South Africa would not exist. Through good times and bad – and the last few years have seen all of us face economic pressures like never before – you have made it possible for us to grow Decorex Joburg into Africa’s largest décor, design and lifestyle exhibition. We now have visitors from all over Africa, buyers from all over the world, visiting this one-stop, all-encompassing exhibition that has no match on the continent. I would also like to pay tribute to the Thebe Exhibitions team that has contributed to the leading position Decorex SA holds today. Committed individuals like former Portfolio Director, Melanie Robinson, head of our business development, Cairey Baxter-Bruce, General Manager of Sales, Angela Chatfield, and Portfolio General Manager, Sian Steyn, have all driven the growth and development of the Decorex SA powerhouse. Decorex SA has been a successful brand because it has not only grown with its market but gained status as the market leader within the exhibition industry. As the demands, needs and interests of consumers have changed, so too has Decorex SA. Over the past 20 years, we have developed various innovative pavilions, catering to the needs of both our exhibitors and our visitors. And we’re not stopping here. The year ahead holds many exciting opportunities for Decorex SA and I look forward to sharing more great Decorex moments with all of you. Thank you, again, for your support and happy birthday Decorex Joburg!

and seeing everything come together is extremely rewarding! WHAT IS THE SECRET TO DECOREX SA’S SUCCESS?
A NEW FACE Meet Sian Steyn, General Manager of Decorex SA portfolio, who stepped into the hot seat a few months ago. WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR JOB? Dealing with the ‘postshow’ blues. No matter how successful a show is, it is always difficult to see it being broken down. Those few days after a show can be a bit disheartening after so much effort and time has been spent on execution. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT IT? Definitely being on site with the whole Decorex SA team. After months of hard work and preparation, seeing the exhibition in all its glory take shape, gives us a massive sense of pride. It is a bit like a theatrical production
Decorex Joburg has grown in size and authority, despite the challenging economic environment and increasing competition. Our success has been crafted around our dynamic team, partners, sponsors and exhibitors. Decorex SA has been a successful brand in South Africa because it has not only grown with its market but gained status as the market leader within the exhibition industry. As the demands, needs and interests of our consumers have changed, so too has Decorex SA. DÉCOR AND DESIGN IS ALL ABOUT KEEPING UP TO DATE. HOW DO YOU REINVENT THE LOOK AND FEEL OF THE EXHIBITIONS EVERY YEAR? Research is essential. Our creative team is constantly researching global trends to ensure that we are the trend setters in Africa. We are always aware of the current décor and design trends and showcase them in all the feature areas created by the Decorex SA team. I believe it is just as important to know the latest exhibition trends and that our execution is on an international level. This is what makes us the premier show in Africa.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ON THE MORNING OF A NEW SHOW STARTING? Completely excited and exhilarated. The best moments are those few seconds before opening the show to our visitors. Seeing the crowds of people queuing to see what we have on display is extremely gratifying. WHAT IS YOUR BEST DECOREX MEMORY? The first Decorex SA exhibition I was involved in. I started in April 2011 and Decorex Cape Town was taking place a month later. Talk about a whirlwind month: Trying to understand my new role, the company, the exhibition itself and getting to know the team. From the moment I arrived in Cape Town it was remarkable, seeing everything come together, the buildup of the stands, understanding the quality of the exhibition, and of course bonding with the phenomenal group of women who put the show together – my team. WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING IF YOU WEREN’T MANAGING DECOREX SA? Definitely something to do with outer space! Perhaps I’d be an astronomer since I am obsessed with stars and planets and find all things space-related absolutely fascinating.

The language of fashion and trends has never been more accessible than it is right now. Dinner table conversations can as easily be about the 2013 colour of the year – emerald – as about Deon Meyer’s latest crime thriller. Ten years ago, only interior decorators knew what a statement wall was. Now couples will put off hanging their art for months, as they debate which wall to paint a pop of colour. Anne Roselt, colour manager of Plascon, says the last 13 years have signified the most colourful era that she can recall. By the end of the last millennium, in 1999, the world of décor had returned to minimalism and simplicity. There was almost no colour around as trend analysts suggested it was because consumers were seeking inner peace and spiritual fulfillment in an uncertain time.
The Pantone colour for 2000 was Cerulean Blue: “Psychologically, gazing at a blue sky brings a sense of peace and tranquility to the human spirit,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute. She added that blue made the unknown a little less frightening because the sky, which is a presence in our lives every day, is a constant and is always there. “That’s the dependability factor of blue.”
our lives | 10
2010 2009 2007 It is this constant information stream about the psychological effect of colour, the rising influence of trend forecasters like Li Edelkoort and the increasing correlation between fashion trends on décor, that has resulted in a greater awareness of and interest in colour. We all survived the start of the new millennium and suddenly there was a colour explosion.
2008
“It was as if the world was going on holiday. You don’t pack your black work suits when you go to the beach; you pack colourful T-shirts and slip slops,” explains Anne. She has been delighted with the “colour boom” of the past 13 years. A big part of the new mood has been the influence of popular culture on the world of colour. The movie Avatar, for example, was seen as largely responsible for turquoise being colour of the year, the year of its release. “Even big art exhibitions play a role,” says Anne. “This year there is a huge amber exhibition in Scotland that is already making its presence felt and the release of the Great Gatsby has a lot to do with the current popularity of pastel colours.” The past 13 years have also seen the growth of the green movement and every colour forecast released in this era has always acknowledged nature and the colours around us.

2011 “And when you have a strong colour like green, you also have its complimentary colour red as well as pink which looks great with green, coming through,” says Anne. The current revival of craft and handmade design is also contributing to our love of colour.
2012 2013
Legendary knitting artist, Kaffe Fassett, has just finished an exhibition in the United Kingdom and Anne predicts his remarkable use of colour will result in another wave of knitted designs as well as other crafts and colourful executions. Looking ahead, Anne says she sees a continued influence of Africa and its hot colours as well as water-like colours influenced by the sheer fabrics that are being seen in the world of fashion. She also predicts a big return to the colour purple. “But at the end of the day, we all need all the colours of the colour spectrum to live a balanced, healthy life,” she says.

Growing
HAPPINESS
A partnership with M-Net Cares has enabled Decorex SA to join forces with one of the country’s leading broadcasters and to give back to the community.
Helping to provide comfortable living spaces in which children can play, sleep, learn and grow

Decorex SA’s media partner M-Net will show just how much they care at this year’s Decorex Joburg, with the Room to Grow installation showcasing great ideas for decorating children’s rooms. M-Net, in partnership with homeware retailer Mr Price Home, is creating the M-Net Cares Room to Grow by Mr Price Home instalation, where visitors will get some junior décor inspiration – from a baby’s nursery, toddler to teen bedrooms and a fun playroom escape.
Once the show is over, all items on display from Mr Price Home – and much more – will be donated to a local underprivileged children’s home, the Orlando Children’s Home in Soweto, supporting the resident kids’ growth needs. This is the second year that M-Net and Decorex SA have joined forces to support the needs of South African children’s charities, and where nurturing and educating South Africa’s youth is once more the focus

of the partnership. Last year, the M-Net Cares café collected books for libraries in underprivileged schools. Both parties value this partnership as an effective means of creating awareness and offering support to children’s charities, with the primary focus being on education. “We are extremely proud to have M-Net on board as media partner for another year,” says general manager of Decorex SA, Sian Steyn. “The work we have accomplished together so far has already benefited many young people and we will continue to do so in 2014.” Koo Govender, M-Net
Director: Corporate Marketing and Communications, says the M-Net Cares collaboration with Decorex SA is a prime example of M-Net’s commitment to education. “It’s important to create an environment that suits the needs of our children – from toddlers to teens. “Room to Grow” showcases the necessary tools required to achieve effective childhood development and in the end, by means of donations to the charities, the exhibition will make a difference where it’s needed most.” Partnering with M-Net Cares and Decorex SA in their do-good décor installation this year, local homeware
retailer Mr Price Home is sponsoring all the furniture. Kerry Strauss, Marketing Director of Mr Price Home says: “Mr Price Home and The Red Cap Foundation are thrilled to be involved with the M-Net Cares Room to Grow initiative because we believe that the environment in which children are nurtured makes a huge difference to who they will become.” “Helping to provide comfortable living spaces in which children can play, sleep, learn and grow is our way of saying thank you to all of the teachers, and care givers who dedicate their lives to helping children in need.”

Renowned for his inimitable sense of glamour, interior designer Stephen Falcke has put SA design firmly on the global stage. As a patron of Decorex SA, he’s been an ardent supporter of the show since its inception, and he’s set to launch his first book on interiors early next year. We talk to this national treasure about his latest projects, and look back over two decades of design by Tess Paterson
master of
DESIGN When Stephen Falcke says he’s busy, it means that he’s working on 29 top end residential projects in a single year. He’s just stepped off a plane from Aspen where he installed a skiing villa. Next he’s off to London where on-going projects include a Grade 11 listed house by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, and a many-storeyed period home which covers a substantial chunk of Belgrave Square. “The cantilevered staircase had a weight limit,” he says of the latter. “So we hoisted up each of the antiques by crane.” While most normal people would be daunted by all this high-end juggling , Stephen clearly loves every moment of the process. It all started out at the Chelsea School of Art where he studied

interior design, followed by a stint working for English guru David Hicks. Returning home, he was mentored by designer Lionel Levin, before branching out on his own. Bestowed with numerous international accolades, he was awarded the Andrew Martin designer of the year 1999. “I’m a purist and a classicist at heart,” he admits, “but I do love a twist.” An understanding of proportion is another of Stephen’s fortes, and he’s insistent that good art and high quality furniture are the cornerstones of beautiful interiors. “Add to that a sense of the unexpected and you can’t go wrong.” Throughout his career, Stephen has retained an extraordinary ability to create vastly divergent looks. There’s a London apartment, for instance, that’s clad head to toe in Robert Kime fabrics. Then there’s Carolyn Steyn’s vibrant new party space in upbeat brights, or a spectacularly pared down Camps Bay bungalow clad in soothing greys and whites. “I’ve

just finished a re-build of my Parktown North home,” he adds. “I found it incredibly challenging to furnish and someone commented that they expected it to be a lot grander. But it’s definitely my dream space.” Stephen recalls the first stand he did for Decorex Joburg 20 years ago. “I remember it was vivid pinks, oranges and reds – all in silks and mixed in with traditional pieces. It’s a show that has remained very close to my heart, and I think as South Africans we’ve made the rules and broken them, and come out on top. Import-wise, our industry is restricted to certain levels due to prices, so the positive challenge lies in creating original looks across a range of items. For me, one of the greatest strengths of the show is the presence of fine, hand crafted South African objects. These beautiful pieces can take their place anywhere in the world, and mix phenomenally well with different styles.” Here at home, Stephen continues to work on Douw Steyn’s vast new development north of Joburg. He’s also planning the launch of his much-anticipated book early next year, featuring 40 spectacular homes in SA and abroad. “It’s been a wonderful journey, often dealing with two or three generations of families. I love making the absolute best of a brief and taking it to its limit, but you’re only ever as good as your last job.” www.stephenfalcke.co.za

COLOUR
NATION 2014 Plascon’s yearly colour forecast defines the way we see the world. With four distinct colour palettes, it has been keeping South Africans abreast of global colour trends since 1999 and this year’s central theme of Colour Nation refers to the way in which colour defines our identities, our world and our experience of it.

URBAN TRIBE is a response to the growing trend towards national pride – especially amongst the BRICS nations. With countries like South Africa and Brazil coming to the fore as global centres of design, their unique aesthetics are being showcased around the world. Urban Tribe expresses this with a warm and grounded palette of contemporary brights, plus gold and black accents.

SECOND NATURE takes a new look at our relationship with the natural world. As more and more people live in cities, the urban becomes our key reference point, and combining this with the natural world becomes vital to keep our lives balanced. This sentiment is captured in a bright, vibrant palette of greens and blues, activated by a bright yellow accent.

INNER SPACE is inspired by the ways in which we use sanctuary environments to rest and reflect in a busy world. TIMELESS MATERIALS Fine craftsmanship has never been more sought after. Not only are these ageold processes beautiful and durable, but the end product is a breath of fresh air among the ubiquitous and mass produced. Tessa Proudfoot is one of South Africa’s leading interior designers – with an eye for signature pieces that can take a space from simply stylish to unforgettable.
IT’S A KIND OF
MAGIC While Tessa Proudfoot has for many years been regarded as one of South Africa’s leading interior designers, it was her 2010 Cabinet of Curiosities exhibition at the Everard Read gallery that catapulted her into the design spotlight. Long before anyone else, Tessa had identified the appeal of Victorian-style objets, a return to the exotic age of explorers and the timeless appeal of colonial quirkiness. The show was a great success and Tessa’s star continued to rise, cementing her reputation as one of the country’s design stars and her unique eye for the elegant, the timeless – and always something unexpected. And while the designer was being hailed by many as being ahead of her time, she was busying herself completing the interiors of a local client who had embarked on the eccentric buying trip with her. “We found beautiful vintage taxidermy flamingoes for them, amongst other

fascinating treasures to add to their collection. One of my favourite pieces is an antique tiger skin, currently residing on their veranda nestled amongst a collection of antique Moroccan textiles used as upholstery for their outdoor furniture,” Tessa recalls.
‘‘
After completing a business degree, she studied the only interior design degree in South Africa at the time, in Cape Town, and gradually set about building her career in the interior design industry. Johannesburg-based Tessa Proudfoot Interiors & Associates is now a leading design studio, working chiefly on domestic projects as well as boutique hospitality and safari developments.
As a child, I loved fashion magazines and books of beautiful art, furniture, gardens and glamorous interiors and still to this day
Describing her unique style, Tessa says she is most influenced by travel, books and fashion. “Not head-to-toe-Gucci fashion, though. I like the high-low mix where you combine designer pieces with high street ones, for an unexpected and off-beat result. I love my Gucci bag and my Rolex but I like to mix them up with other things.” Tessa, though fascinated by trends, seldom follows them, saying this is the sure fire way to ending up with a space that dates so badly that you end up having to replace it all. While Tessa’s style is sophisticated and worldly, she believes it is also rooted in an extremely down to earth upbringing on a sugarcane farm in Zululand.
‘‘
This year Tessa Proudfoot has been invited to be in the Designer Spotlight at Decorex Joburg, showcasing her unique style in an installation at the entrance to Hall 5. She will also be collaborating with St Leger and Viney to launch her second fabric collection at Decorex Joburg.
“As a child, I loved fashion magazines and books of beautiful art, furniture, gardens and glamorous interiors and still to this day, my favourite daydream is to transport myself into those beautiful spaces,” she explains.
Her signature looks are layered and timeless, usually with a quirky surprise. In her own home, a living room in neutrals with a mix of old and new furniture is given an eccentric flourish with a giant French reindeer antler chandelier painted black. A wooden screen in the corner completes the chic lived-in effect and without it the look would fall apart, she says. Tessa’s own home décor style is authentic and timeless. She is also obsessive about only using “the real thing”. “I would rather do without something than resort to a bad imitation of it. Most pertinently, in the world of

fabrics, I am obsessive about the handle of a beautifully woven cloth that has been crafted rather than mass-produced and the prospect of a polyester alternative upsets me deeply!”
has thrust upon us, there is already an increasing fascination with forgotten artisanal craftsmanship such as lace making, tapestry, knitting, weaving and so on.
It is no accident that Tessa is launching her second fabric collection with St Leger and Viney this year – she is absolutely passionate about fabrics. “Good interior design is all about creating the correct structure for a space and fabrics are the guilty pleasure that add the joy and make it sing. But you can’t expect to throw any old fabric at a problem and expect results that will last – you need the basics in place first. Only then can you start the layering of fabrics in carefully balanced doses much like one would add colour and texture to an oil painting – too much of one thing and not enough of another can be deadly. If budget is an issue, no amount of shiny, embroidered polysilk is going to give you a look – rather stick to plain white artist canvas for everything and slowly add beautiful heavy linens, damask and so on.”
“This goes hand in hand with the concept of recycling seemingly forgotten, staid old classics from the past and creating a new fresh version of modern. To refer back to fashion, witness Karl Lagerfeld’s latest collection for Chanel, where his models wore magnificent traditional woven wool tartan with leather sporrans, chunky - almost crude - hand knits, super-cool facial piercings and bleached blonde mohawks. And then there was D&G who sent their models down the runway wearing full length tapestry coats and dresses trimmed with Italian lace collars – in the same floral needlework that we all know from the glass framed wall hangings in our grandmothers’ homes!”
‘‘
We also need to get more creative and do clever things like recycle old pieces
Looking to the future, Tessa believes that to counterbalance the high speed living that the age of technology
‘‘
For Tessa, the art of great interior design is all about proportion and being able to recognise when it’s right is something inherent and instinctive – not a talent that is easy to learn.
As economic pressures continue to grow, we are going to become more and more discerning about our décor choices and it’s going to be more important to buy fewer quality pieces, than many cheap ones that will not last, she says. “We also need to get more creative and do clever things like recycle old pieces.” Whichever way the trends go, we’re pretty sure Tessa will be charting her own unique style course.

Our aim with the trestle table was to create something accessible, without over-using materials, say Marc Nicolson and Lyall Sprong of designer-maker consultancy Thingking. The Ceramic Factory in Linden has to be one of Jozi’s best finds for gifts. Creative director Rial Visagie’s designs are imbued with humour, from 3D animal platters to motorcar salt and pepper pots. The Citizenship range celebrates the rhino, as well as the quirky Fro Family. 59 4th Avenue, Linden.

STATEMENT PIECE Like a killer pair of heels, a statement light can change the mood of a room in an instant.
“A magic mirror and the power of crystals transform a simple shell into an endless light bouquet of flowers,” says Marcel Wanders of his Valentine flat chandelier. www.moooi.com
Inspired by Islamic patterns which have been translated into three dimensions,Willowlamp’s Mandala 1 is a vast illuminated sculpture. Constructed from laser-cut stainless steel frames with halogen lamps, we think it’s nothing short of an artwork. www.willowlamp.com
The epitome of retro glamour, Tom Dixon’s Copper Shade continues to up the ante with its warm metallic glow. www.tomdixon.net. Harlequin Folia wallpaper available at Black Fabrics.
Makers of Stuff crafted their bell-like Cone pendants from brushed metals including mild steel, brass and copper. “They’re simple and unpretentious and, depending on the materials used, the inner light colour changes when lit up,” says Antonia Morgado. www.mosproducts.co.za
METALLICA Metallic colours continue to be a huge décor trend, particular when it comes to lighting. We love the simple industrial lines of the Brooklyn brass pendant, also available in black and chrome from The Lighting Warehouse. www.lightingwarehouse.co.za
Anatomy Design’s Lab Light retains an almost cult-like status among decoristas. Made from brushed brass, black steel and porcelain, we love its sheer elegance and cool quirkiness. www.anatomydesign.co.za

MATERIAL MIX Unusual materials are used to dramatic effect in these contemporary lighting designs.
Beautifully simple and crafted from birch plywood, Jacques Cronje’s Minima pendant range is a South African classic. Add one for impact, or a group of three for real drama. www.timberdesign.co.za
Jozi designer Anthea McCloed combines nostalgia and quirk with a clean modern edge. Items like enamel mugs and bowls are mixed with timber and metal to create a range of fun, functional lighting. www.a2ndlife.co.za

CLEAR AND SIMPLE The use of glass continues to make an impact in lighting solutions, seen in simple flask shapes and cut crystal detailing.
Inspired by the classic patterns found on whisky glasses and decanters, Lee Broom’s Crystal Bulb is a triumph of function and ornamentation. Each lead crystal bulb is hand cut, and the lamps are available as single pendants, chandeliers or table lamps. www.leebroom.com
Part of the Rough and Smooth collection, Tom Dixon’s Flask is reminiscent of the chemistry lab. Crafted from hand-blown glass, this beauty boasts a rounded ridged base and smoked glass hood. www.tomdixon.net

IT’S HOT IN THE KITCHEN COLOUR POP
“Our younger market in particular is looking for strong colour accents, without compromising on the longevity of the design,” says Sergio Polita of Snaidero Kitchens. “The Code kitchen, for instance, has a focus on clever open storage, including bookshelves. Boxes in solid ash, painted to a chosen finish, are an excellent way of adding colour to an otherwise neutral space.” www.snaidero.com
THE MOBILE KITCHEN
“The b2 presents probably the most compact kitchen design of our time,” says Colin Lee of bulthaup. Open and portable, it’s a combination of workbench, kitchen tool cabinet and appliance housing cabinet. Depending on your needs, it can be added to and configured to suit your space – a clever mix of elemental form and rational function. www.bulthaup.co.za

SLEEK AND MODERN
“The new contemporary kitchen is all about beautiful textures,” says Philip Richards of blu_line. “Technology is encouraging a modernist look, but we’re finding that clients don’t want complete minimalism. Here we’ve combined surfaces of Caesarstone, high gloss charcoal lacquer, oak veneer and mirror detail. The result is richly layered with a sense of warmth, yet still highly contemporary.” www.blu-line.co.za
COUNTRY CHIC
Shaker style cabinetry, satin-finish ducoed doors and simple hardware give this open plan kitchen its relaxed, country feel. “Subtle tones imply comfort in that they’re ‘lived in’ and easy on the eye,” says John Dammermann of Easylife Kitchens. The aqua-coloured island with a dark Caesarstone top adds to the calm, classical feel. www.easylifekitchens.co.za

UNDERSTATED ELEGANCE
BATHROOM SANCTUARIES
Designed with deliberate restraint, the Durastyle range by architect Matteo Thun is reduced to the purest forms. Not only does it blend in with a broad range of styles, but the considered design allows for optimal space and clever storage options. Perfect for lovers of pared down and clutterfree spaces. www.duravit.com
INSPIRED BY NATURE
Described as an ‘organic minimalist’ design, the new Axor Starck Organic collection features highly sculptural mixers for basins, showers and baths. Branch-like, the wash-basin mixers are available in four different heights complete with ergonomic handles. Separate shower controls for water volume and temperature add to this intuitive, economical design. www.hansgrohe.co.za

MOSAIC FOCUS
From wall-to-wall impact – think hip hotel spas – smaller focal points like mosaics continue to make a design statement. Here a floor panel in natural tones draws attention to a freestanding bath, offsetting a bamboo vanity and floating shelves. CONTEMPORARY SHAPES
With its drum-shaped basins as the keynote element, Il Bagno Alessi One by Stefano Giovannoni for Laufen has both dramatic visual appeal and a hint of eccentricity. SCULPTURAL LAWNS tim steyn
landscape designer
From accolades at the Chelsea Flower Show to laid-back fire pit entertaining, three leading landscapers take us outdoors. by
Tess Paterson
“Lawns are the last gardening frontier,” says Joburgbased Tim Steyn. “So much has been done in terms of creating different looks using flowering plants and beds, that we’re now working with lawn grass as a medium. It’s a fantastic way to add new interest to what was often a flat and unimaginative area.” Inspired by the large-scale civic projects of American landscape architect Charles Jencks, Tim has adapted and reduced some of these ideas to a domestic scale, working on everything from rambling Westcliff gardens to small courtyard spaces. “Different lawn varieties allow for endless design options. You could let All Seasons Evergreen grow to ankle height, for instance, and then cut a meandering pathway through it. Playing with colour is another effective tool, as the All Seasons peaks in winter and contrasts beautifully with brown veld grasses.” On a steeply sloped site, Tim created a sweeping set of lawn steps, contrasted with steel risers. “It looks wonderful and is a great way to create a seamless transition, rather than using the standard hard retaining walls.” Other deceptively simple designs include graded embankments, and combining grasses at different heights with rocks and pavers. “We’re by no means pioneers in land shaping techniques, but find that it works particularly well. It’s also child-friendly and helps to both absorb water and bind the soil.” timsteyn@telkomsa.net

FIRE IN THE GARDEN
jan blok
landscape designer “People are yearning for a more natural lifestyle,” says Jan Blok, “and creating fire pits and bomas is a wonderful way to get back to the fundamentals. It’s about enjoying the South African climate at any time of the year, and connecting with family and friends.” To create a sense of intimacy when designing a boma, Jan advises adding raised walls that enclose the space and focus the attention towards the fire. “This allows for built-in benches or floating timber seating attached to the walls. It’s also important to complement the architecture of the house, and we tend to favour natural materials such as stone, clay bricks and timber that add to the overall atmosphere. Timber decking adds a sense of warmth, and suits most styles of home from classical to contemporary.” If you’re pressed for space, Jan suggests trying a fire basket or brazier to create a similar fire pit effect. “They’re readily available and portable, so you can place them on a circle of gravel close to your patio. Add a few deckchairs and lanterns and the whole atmosphere takes on a welcoming glow.” For walled courtyards, built-in fireplaces allow for year-round al fresco dining, doubling up as braai areas by adding a grid. “Placing the fireplace at eye-level when seated gives a fantastic focal point to the setting, and adding storage on either side makes the area very user-friendly.” www.janblokdesigns.co.za 082 455 4451.

TAKE A STAND david davidson
specialist stand designer and the creative force behind SA’s 33rd Gold Medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2013
“To celebrate the dual centenary of Kirstenbosch and the Chelsea Flower Show, we wanted to create a sense of being contained in the heart of a garden,” explains David. “We enclosed the exhibit, wrapping it on the outside with photographic panels showing Kirstenbosch’s early development and history. Inside we represented The Dell - one of the older and most beautiful parts, embraced by the amphitheatre. This area was filled with rock banks, cycads and tree ferns, some of which are successors of the very original plant material. Across the walkway we created a large protea display, overseen by a dramatic backdrop of the mountain.” “Stand design allows you to be far more theatrical, to create a sense of illusion,” he adds. “At Chelsea you learn to improvise and to allow for contingencies - there’s no nipping down the road for more fynbos!” Despite the team’s many awards, David insists that the plants are the real stars. “Visitors to Chelsea are constantly awed by the diversity of our plant life,” he says. “I often meet tourists at Kirstenbosch who say that seeing the Chelsea stand made them plan a trip to SA. Year after year the show proves to be an invaluable marketing tool for promoting our country.” www.davidsdesign.co.za

Four of Gauteng’s leading interior designers will be showcasing their talents in the Volvo #MADEFORYOU Designer Pods installation constructed by DuroBuild at this year’s Decorex Joburg. A collaboration with Volvo at Decorex SA this year has brought into focus the increasing link between motor vehicle technology and design. Decorex SA Portfolio Manager Sian Steyn said her team was delighted to be showcasing the very best of interior design inspired by one of the world’s best designed cars, Volvo. Each of the interior designers was invited to drive a Volvo vehicle for a weekend to experience firsthand what makes this luxury car brand so unique. The designers will interpret elements of the car into an innovative room setting that embodies the design traits of each vehicle, including green, cool,
safety and innovation. Michelle Naude, Marketing at PR Director at Volvo Car South Africa says that in the same way that a home is designed and decorated around the residents’ needs, so are Volvo’s human-centric in their design. “We say that every Volvo is designed around you. We understand that when it comes to deciding on a Volvo, you should not have to compromise, but rather be given the opportunity to consider one that is truly #MADEFORYOU.” Joburg designers participating in the Volvo #MADEFORYOU Designer Pods are Andrew Mackenzie, Dave Nemeth, Samantha Collet and WMI Interior

technology.”
Dave Nemeth, trend forecaster and co-owner of Oaklands décor in Blairgowrie, was asked to interpret the “cool” aspect of the Volvo brand.
The current Steam Punk trend, where Victorian style and science fiction were popping up in fashion and décor, would become visible in car design too.
“We have taken the Volvo inspiration quite literally: Using high gloss white and beautiful walnut, combined with two-toned fabric, we have designed a range of furniture specifically for the Volvo brand,” says Dave. “Our pod will have an upmarket, retro, Scandinavian look – very simplified with rich finishes.” Looking towards design trends in 2014, Dave describes an increasing merging of design and technology. Motor vehicle design, in particular, is moving into an interesting new era where older, heritage-inspired, lines were going to be combined with ever more high-tech driving solutions. “Consumers are graving the warmth and soul of design inspired by old style cars but the convenience of modern Bianca Shaw of Slinx for Volvo #MADEFORYOU at Decorex Durban earlier this year.
BlueScope Steel will be used in the construction of the Volvo #MADEFORYOU Designer Pods at Decorex Joburg. Tyrone Blommestijn, national sales manager of DuroBuild, said he and his team were delighted to be showcasing their new BlueScope Steel construction system at Decorex Joburg. Recently imported from Australia, the high quality BlueScope Steel carries a two-year no-rust guarantee and offered a cost effective alternative to bricks and mortar in both domestic and commercial construction. “The pod structure goes up in a fifth of time compared to conventional building which means a huge saving in labour costs,” says Tyrone.
Look out for the BlueScope Steel construction of the Volvo #MADEFORYOU Designer Pods at Decorex Joburg.
