RABBI MELMAN’S MINUTES Many people, myself included, love to take vacation time over the summer. It is a time to unwind, relax and enjoy time with family and friends. Even though things tend to “quiet down” at the synagogue, we are still hard at work. We take the time, even while on vacation, to continue to plan for another great year at Beth Shalom. We have spent the past year looking back at our first 50 years. We have celebrated our founders, our pastpresidents and so many who have made CBS the great community that it is. As we embark on our 51st year and look ahead to all the great things that are yet to be, I share with you some new additions to help enhance all that we do. At the beginning of the summer we launched our first ever Podcast (which you can find on all the major Podcast platforms, e.g. iTunes, Google Play, etc.) entitled BethShalomontheGO.* The concept of the Podcast allows us to share thoughts on a variety of topics on a regular basis, to which you can listen at your leisure. You can literally take the message with you. You can listen at home, in the car, at work or wherever and whenever you like – that is the beauty of the Podcast. It is another medium that brings us into the current technological generation and maintains one’s connection to Beth Shalom. As many of you know, I take much of my vacation time and spend it at Camp Ramah in Wisconsin, one of my favorite places in the world. There is nothing better for a Jewish child than the

gift of Jewish summer camp. Our first Podcast is an interview with Jacob Cytryn, the Director of Camp Ramah in Wisconsin, and we discuss the value of Jewish summer camp – I hope you will download it and enjoy. The other major technological enhancement we have made over the last few months is the addition of live streaming. I am extremely proud that we have brought this service to Beth Shalom and I am grateful to the CBS Men’s Club for purchasing the hardware. We are now live streaming all religious services. What does that mean? It means that if you are not able to make it to shul, or have relatives that live out of town and can’t make it to a simcha on Shabbat, one is able to go to our website and watch live! You may ask, don’t we already have a call-in number? We do. Rather than simply listening to the service, watching it live gives you the feeling that you are actually there. We have heard from many people over the last few months that this new service allows them to feel even more connected when they are unable, for whatever reason, to be with us in person. And, we have a wonderful teshuva, responsa, in the Conservative Movement that allows one to fulfill their obligation for reciting kaddish. One cannot count in the minyan from a virtual distance but one can say kaddish. In many ways, this is a “game changer” for people. Many of our members are not physically able to be at services anymore and now feel reconnected. Our goal is to connect to all our members. We want CBS to be a second home – that is what being part of the CBS family is all about. *The podcast will be launching again this fall.
