A retrospective on Yom Hashoa (Holocaust Commemoration Day) Since the 1950’s when it was officially declared by the State of Israel, the 27th of Nisan has been observed as “Yom Hashoa V’ha-gevurah” – “A day of commemoration of the Holocaust and Resistance” Only in the last few decades has this day been observed by Jewish communities in the United States.

I am writing about this subject because you should know that there were at least three gatherings in the Chicagoland area to remember those who were murdered, those who resisted and those who survive.

Our community has one of the largest groups of survivors anywhere, making it no surprise that there were a number of gatherings.

There was a program at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, which featured cantors from our community. Hadassah presented a group of hidden children survivors, featured in a new book entitled Out of Chaos. One of them was our member, Adele Zaveduk.

I attended a program and memorial in Skokie, co-sponsored by She’erit Hapleitah and JUF, which has been held for many years. It was my first time. It will not be my last because of the profound way in which I was moved. The program moved and touched me, especially the words of the keynote speaker, Regine Schlesinger, veteran correspondent for WBBM News Radio. What impacted me most deeply was knowing that I was sitting among a large group of survivors; real people who had endured the horrors of the Holocaust, survived and made new lives for themselves as witnessed by the presence of their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

That awareness, along with a story Regine Schlesinger told at the end of her speech, brought tears and the commitment to continue to be with our survivors on this day, for the long years to come. Here is the story she shared as told by Yitzchok Adlerstein: …who truly defined what it meant to be a survivor? Did anyone, or anything?

I learned the answer from Rabbi Moshe Feinstein.

This gadol hador, the greatest sage of his generation, was so renowned he was referred to simply as “Rav Moshe.” The closest I came to this legend was at Yeshiva University High School, where my rebbe was his son-in-law, Rabbi Moshe Tendler. Rabbi Tendler, and every other rabbi, would speak of Rav Moshe in awe-stricken tones usually reserved for biblical forefathers.

One summer I was spending a week with my aunt and uncle in upstate Ellenville. Uncle David and Aunt Saba, survivors themselves, as the doctor and nurse in charge of the concentration camp infirmary, had managed to save the lives of innumerable inmates, including my mother and sister. After “the War” they had set up a medical practice in this small Catskill village, where, I discovered, to my amazement, they had one celebrity patient — Rav Moshe.

My aunt mentioned casually that Rav Moshe had an appointment the next day. Would I like to meet him? Would I? It was like asking me, would I like to meet God. I couldn’t sleep that night. I agonized over what I should wear. Should I approach him? What should I say? Should I mention that his son-in-law was my rebbe? Should I speak to him in English, or my rudimentary Yiddish?

I was seated in the waiting room, in the best clothing I had with me, an hour before his appointment.

It seemed like an eternity, but eventually he arrived, accompanied by an assistant at each side. He didn’t notice me.

I was frozen. I had intended to rise deferentially when he entered, but I didn’t. I had prepared a few sentences that I had repeatedly memorized, but I sensed that my heart was beating too quickly for me to speak calmly.

My aunt had heard the chime when he entered and came out of the office to greet him: “Rabbi Feinstein, did you meet my nephew Ikey? Can you believe a shaygitz [unobservant] like me has a yeshiva bochur [student] in the family?”

Rav Moshe finally looked at me. I was mortified. My aunt was addressing him irreverently. She was joking with him. She had called me Ikey, not Yitzchok, or even Isaac.

Then it got even worse. She walked over to him. Surely she knew not to shake his hand. She didn’t.

She kissed him affectionately on the cheek as she did many of her favorite patients. She then told him my uncle would see him in a minute and returned to the office.

Rav Moshe and his attendants turned and looked at me, I thought accusingly. I wanted to die. In a panic, I walked over to him and started to apologize profusely: “Rabbi Feinstein, I apologize. My aunt, she isn’t frum [religious]. She doesn’t understand…”

He immediately placed his fingers on my lips to stop me from talking. He then softly spoke two sentences in Yiddish that I will remember to my dying day: “She has numbers on her arms. She is holier than me.”

Rav Moshe had understood what I had not. Our holiest generation was defined by the numbers on their arms.

Here we are at the start of June and the conclusion of another academic year of programming and classes at CBS. Ironically as this month begins we find the Jewish people at the beginning of their learning of what it means to be a Jewish people as they stand with bated breath at the base of Mount Sinai awaiting Matan Torah, the giving of the Torah.

The essence of the teachings in the Torah is often summed by the words “Love Thy Neighbor as Thyself, I am the Lord”. All of Judaism’s efforts come to elevate our beings to a high rung on a spiritual ladder. The more we think of ourselves, the steeper the angle of the ladder, the more we think of others the more level is the path of ascension.

Here at CBS one of the ways we have been thinking of others, and parenthetically I think it is one of the things we do best here, is through the creation of our H.U.G.S.@CBS program. (If you are unaware of its purpose please check out the CBS website and find its explanation under our “community” heading). We will be hosting our annual Shavuot program this year on the first eve of the holiday and look forward to a meaningful time. This will end our HUGS calendar programming year and we will begin again with Rosh Hashanah.

The new twist for this coming year is that CBS will be joined by four other community congregations thus creating a unified and stronger Jewish Community effort to reach out and “love our neighbors as ourselves”; Am Yisrael of Northfield, B’nai Tikvah of Deerfield, Moriah Congregation in Deerfield and North Shore Suburban Synagogue Beth El in Highland Park. After this pilot year we hope several other congregations may join in as well. Our combined energies and collective resources will hopefully cast a much wider and effective net of publicity so that more families can come to take advantage of the stellar programming that our congregation has actualized these past two years and use it as a foundation upon which to grow.

Please continue to let those you know and care for know about HUGS. As we plan our holiday programming through the year we believe whole-heartedly that those who do avail themselves of this programming gift will be enhanced by it. In fact we have been told so in beautiful and definitive terms by some of our participants which have touched our hearts.

Within this past month I have been witness to the goodness and kindness of our Jewish community as it pertains to loving others. Casually informing a friend of mine of our new HUGS partnership concept he was inspired to support our work with a ten thousand dollar gesture of support. That combined with our annual budget, and the financial commitment of the other four congregations, allows us to solidify our programming and expand our outreach and effectiveness. I know this year everyone involved in the fulfillment of this mitzvah via our HUGS initiative will truly enjoy HUGSameach.

---- I can’t end my bulletin without a shout out to my buddy Harvey Gold. This being Harvey’s last month of leadership at CBS as our Executive Director par excellence I am thankful for what I have learned from him about “loving thy neighbor as thyself”. Harvey’s love of CBS had no boundaries and young and old were always cared for with genuineness. You have done nobly Harvey and I have no doubts that you have not only lived up to God’s standards for us a human(e) beings but your family’s for upholding the Gold family name so impeccably.

Congregation President Glen Rotor

As the first year of my term comes to a rapid close, there are many people who I would like to thank for their efforts and dedication to CBS. We have two Exec Board members whose terms are completed, Bill Weinstein and Suzy Hakimian. I have worked with each of them for many years as they have served in multiple positions on Exec. They have carried out their duties with responsibility, creativity and the utmost professionalism. I will miss both of them on Exec but know their personalities and how much they will remain involved in a big way at CBS. I look forward to working with our continuing Exec Board with a few additions. They have been a great resource to me over the past year and I am excited about the year to come.

Our Board of Trustees has three people who will not continue next year, Hilary Braun, Arlen Lasinsky and Karen Rosenthal. I have worked closely with all three of them over the years and thank them for their service to CBS. Joining the BOT is a big commitment and we thank them for their time and efforts on our behalf.

For the continuing Board and its new trustees, I look forward to the 2014-15 year as a way to continue our work to make CBS stronger and a more inviting place for its members and the community in the Northern Suburbs.

To our clergy and professional staff, thank you for your guidance and inspiration in making Beth Shalom a better place. Our office and maintenance staffs are always there to make sure that what needs to be done is. I thank them for their efforts in making CBS run as smoothly as it does.

And it all works because of the man behind the curtain, the one with all of the answers. In his first 25 years, he laid the groundwork for a special place. It was a synagogue that was growing, finding its way in the community, forging a path as a strong organization and a leader in the Conservative Movement. We were a growing community, having survived recessions at the beginning of the 80s and 90s only to grow stronger as Northbrook grew. Our numbers increased, our leaders were plentiful and CBS became a powerhouse.

The last 17 years had some challenges along with the growth of CBS. We endured two recessions, one effecting much of our membership. Our building grew again, adding some needed space.

The long standing JCC pre-school closed its doors, being replaced a couple of years later by another pre-school. Our own Hebrew School was remade and changed for the times. And we were joined by an enthusiastic and hard working group of new congregants.

Throughout it all, our captain steered the ship to avoid obstacles and maintain the course of our journey. He continued to write articles like “10 suggestions for a healthy congregation�. He never hid behind that curtain, always being the face of CBS and having the ability to make sure that all were welcome to our house, whether it was their first visit or one of many. As he rides off into the sunset, writes his last article or just shows off all our great furniture, as his brothers did, his legacy and our biggest challenge will be to maintain that face, the open and welcoming face of Congregation Beth Shalom, as Harvey has done so successfully and continuously for 42 years. Thank you Harvey for giving us all that you have and even more than that.

THE MEANING OF THE HOLIDAY

My mother took me to the synagogue for the first time when I was 5 years old. She was the chairman (and only member) of the Library committee and that’s where I learned about volunteering at the synagogue. The first thing I ever did was staple maps to the picnic flyer for Bnai Zion. I grew up at the synagogue. As I got older I learned that the Synagogue was important to my Mom, and that all my brothers had participated in Synagogue activities in one way or the other. I even started Hebrew School a year early because I wanted to be like my brothers. I was given a tremendous Jewish Education growing up and I have always loved being a part of a Synagogue.

I worked in the school office, led Jr Congregation and High Holiday services, taught Hebrew and Sunday School, Torah reading and Shofar blowing. I was the Head counselor of the Day camp, swimming instructor, a Kadima and USY advisor and then a Youth Director. When the possibility came up that I could be an Executive Director I realized that it was the perfect thing for me to do. It would keep me in the Synagogue and enable me to do what I loved.

I started at CBS in 1972 after getting an offer I couldn’t refuse and over the years we have grown together. (Sometimes I grew much more than I should have.) We started with 350 families, a small building with 9 classrooms, a youth lounge and a small social hall. We now have 1270 families and a beautiful building. How did I get so lucky to be part of this magnificent synagogue? To meet so many wonderful people?

To work with an outstanding staff? And now, after 42 years, I look back with a great deal of joy and pride and realize who I should thank for all these wonderful things.

I wish to thank my parents, Anne and Ben Gold. I wish to thank my brothers, Sheldon, Aaron and Chuck Gold. They led the way. They all gave me the strong foundation that I needed to be a leader of such a fine Congregation. They taught me warmth, compassion and kindness. They taught me to reach out and help other people. I was taught that no matter what happens it can always be worse and that I should try and make things better. I am grateful to them and I miss them.

It is said that an Executive Director can retire when his desk is cleared and all the work is done. My desk has never been cleared and the work will never be done. So I am happy to welcome Michael Garlin to CBS as the new Executive Director.

It has been my honor and my privilege to serve for 42 years as your Executive Director.

TODAH RABAH!

Shavuot, also known as the “Feast of Weeks”, was originally celebrated as a Thanksgiving for the “First Fruits.” The Torah refers to Shavuot as “Chag HaBikkurim” - the festival of the first fruits, which our ancestors observed by bringing to the Temple offerings of the best, ripe produce of the fields. During the period leading up to Shavuot, we count each day beginning on the Second Night of Passover. This counting, “Sefirat Ha’Omer”, highlighted our ancestors’ hopes that Shavuot, the end of the Omer counting, would yield a bountiful crop.

Coincidently, the Omer period encompasses many of the tragedies of our people over the years. Therefore, it is customary to prohibit weddings during a specific part of the seven weeks as a sign of national mourning.

In addition to being an agricultural festival, Shavuot is also a celebration of the Jewish Peoples’ receiving the Torah at Mt. Sinai. Although the Torah does not identify Shavuot in this context, the Talmud has an undisputed tradition that the Torah was given at this time. Therefore, the Ten Commandments are read in the Synagogue on the first day of this two-day Holiday, and on the first night of Shavuot, study is the theme.

SERVICES WEDNESDAY MORNING, June 4 SPECIAL CEREMONY FOR OUR YOUNGEST CHILDREN

In a large congregation such as ours, we are privileged to celebrate the births, namings and Britot of many new additions to our families. Shavuot, as a Festival of the Harvest, is a uniquely appropriate time to welcome all our new arrivals, collectively, as they join our people, who first became a people, at Mt. Sinai.

Therefore, we invite and encourage all families with their children 4 years and younger (infants too, of course) to be in the synagogue by about 10:45 a.m. on June 4 for a special procession and ceremony to welcome our children to the covenant as the Ten Commandments are chanted from the Torah.

Each child will receive an apple and have the opportunity to see the open Torah. This should be a beautiful opportunity to express our thankfulness to God for the bounty of our children. We hope many children, their parents and grandparents will attend.

Meet Michael Garlin, Our New Executive Director

Dear Members of Congregation Beth Shalom, It is an absolute pleasure and an honor to be part of Congregation Beth Shalom as your new executive director. The opportunity to support the congregants, Rabbi Wolkin, Rabbi Melman, Hazzan Stoehr, all the senior staff, administrative staff, and the board of directors will be my pleasure. I am fortunate to be able to work with Harvey during the month of June during this transition period. As you know, Harvey is a terrific guy who is definitely leaving a legacy for me to follow.

I am happy to say that I am a Chicagoan all the way. My beginnings in synagogue life were at Northwest Suburban Synagogue in Morton Grove. My family lived two blocks from the synagogue on Church Street and I would spend the weekends playing at the synagogue playground. My family moved to South Florida (Plantation) when I was eight and we were members of the Conservative synagogue, Temple Beth Israel, in Sunrise, Florida. I was very involved with USY and BBYO during my high school years.

My education includes a B.S. degree from Arizona State University and a master’s degree from Nova University in Davie, Florida. I was trained as a life coach at the Coaches Training Institute in Northern California.

My career has been focused in the social service sector.

My first position out of college was Teen Director and Assistant Camp Director at the Levis JCC in Boca Raton, FL. After moving to Chicago in the early 90’s I worked for many years for the JCC’s of Chicago and Camp Chi before becoming the Center Director at JCYS Northwest Family Center in Buffalo Grove. Most recently, I was the Executive Director at Temple Jeremiah in Northfield and for the past two years, the Chicago Associate Director for AIPAC. On a personal note, I am a huge Chicago Cubs, Bears, Blackhawks and Bulls fan. I love watching my brother Jeff on the Goldbergs or Curb your Enthusiasm (I also wish there was another season). My hobbies include anything with my wife Mindy, spending time with my children Marisa and Brad, when they will have me, and most recently, learning how to live a healthy life through food and exercise (wait until you see my before pictures).

To say that I am excited to begin this new chapter in my life is an understatement. I am looking forward to meeting everyone at Beth Shalom and I hope you will stop by and introduce yourself to me as my door is always open.

I hope to share with all of you my passion and love for Judaism.

Thank You For Making A Difference In The World!

It’s a Mitzvah!

CBS has always been committed to Social Action within the Jewish community and beyond, and we couldn’t help make the world a better place without all of you. A thank you to our CBS family for once again supporting all of our Social Action activities throughout the year.

All of your food donations this year supported clients at our local Northfield Food Pantry and Northwest Suburban ARK through some very lean months, and was greatly appreciated.

Your participation in two blood drives put CBS back at record high collection levels, and we hope to see all who donated and more, back in the fall.

Additionally, thank you to everyone who donated holiday candy and toys, toiletries, school supplies, ink cartridges, clothing, comics, eye glasses and cell phones throughout the year. All of these items have been sent on, and are being put to great use.

I would like to thank all the committee chairs for their ongoing commitment to Social Action: - Jill Olefsky collected candy and sent to our troops, brightened many children’s holidays by providing them with new toys donated by our members, continued to manage toiletry donations, and just about anything else we needed her to do.

- Sue and Len Rubin planned many programs throughout this past year including speakers and movies, and most recently, the Israel Celebration Weekend. The Israel Committee and its activities have become such an important part of CBS, and I can’t wait to see what they are planning for next year.

- Merrill Medansky continues to coordinate monthly shopping for 8 ARK families that CBS sponsors by way of the Gold Sabbath Fund.

- Sara Weinstein continues to coordinate food donations for the Buffalo Grove PADS shelter and the packing and delivering of over 100 Rosh Hashanah and Pesach bags to the Northfield Food Pantry.

- Marilyn Fish continues to manage collections for the animal shelter.

- Arlene Handler continues to facilitate at our annual flu shot day every fall.

- Steve Elisco and his committee ran two very successful Blood Drives this year.

- Sandee Levin continues to be our Northfield Food Pantry liaison.

- Jean Kosova continued her work with the ARK this year by hosting ARK families at our annual Purim festivities.

Lastly, thank you to all the clergy, CBS staff, Glen Roter and the rest of my fellow exec board officers for supporting Social Action and helping us publicize our projects throughout the year. You are always there for your CBS family.

The Museum of Extraordinary Things by Alice Hoffman transports the reader to tumultuous New York during the first decades of the twentieth century. Coralie Sardie’s father is a despicable man who runs a freak show on Coney Island. He has purposely isolated Coralie and trained her to be an exceptional swimmer. Coralie was born with webbed fingers so he displays her as a mermaid in a tank in the “museum”. One night after a swim in the Hudson River, Coralie stumbles upon a young man taking photographs in the woods. Though no words are exchanged, Coralie is overcome with feeling for this stranger.

The photographer is Eddie Cohen, a Russian immigrant formerly known as Ezekiel. Ezekiel lives with his father in the Lower East Side Orthodox community and works with him in a factory as a tailor’s apprentice. Frustrated with the working conditions and low wages he takes on a secret life working for an investigator. Ezekiel soon abandons his father, his name, and his religious life in favor of working as a photographer. On the day of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire Eddie photographs the devastation in great detail. One young woman was supposed to be at the factory, but she is unaccounted for. The woman’s father is from the Orthodox community and he begs Eddie to investigate.

As Eddie searches for this woman he finds himself. Hoffman’s masterful themes and characters are what make this book an extraordinary thing.

Beth Shalom Honors Members of the Synagogue Who Served in the IDF or with Volunteers for Israel

The Israel Committee presents:

CBS ISRAEL STORIES Capturing Beth Shalom’s connection with Israel one congregant at a time

At Beth Shalom’s Israel Celebration Day (held on May 4th), we honored members of the synagogue who served in the Israel Defense Forces or participated in Volunteers for Israel, a program that provides the opportunity to spend 3 weeks working (and we do mean working!) at an IDF military base. We honored: • Marlene Greenberg who participated with Volunteers for Israel and spent her time with the IDF’s Armored Division at Camp Jules in the Negev. A special Mazel Tov to Marlene’s grandson Jacob who made Aliyah a few weeks ago. • Lew Bernstein who participated with Volunteers for Israel alongside his grandson Cody. They spent time working on a maintenance base near Ashkelon and Ashdod • Bev and Sam Weisenberg who have volunteered 12 times working on IDF bases as far north as Haifa, as far south as Be’er-Sheva, and at many bases in between.

They are hoping to take a 13th trip with Volunteers for Israel this summer • Edie and Ken Smithson who have volunteered 18 times working on IDF bases across Israel from Safed to Haifa to Be’er Sheva and many bases in between. Edie and Ken hope to make another trip soon. • Bob Israel who spent 3 months in volunteer service to the IDF’s Edom Brigade stationed at the Har Yehoram base near Eilat. • Matty Shechtman who served 2 years in the IDF’s Modieen unit, the intelligence unit, and was assigned to bases in the Sinai desert. • Irit Jacobson who served 2 years in a special IDF unit addressing the critical issue of sabotage • Bradley Rubin who served 2 years with IDF Paratrooper Brigade and was assigned to bases in the West Bank and near the Lebanon border • Ruti Modlin who served 2 years in the IDF’s Modieen unit and was assigned to a base in the Sinai desert. • Alfy Nathan who liberated the Bergen Belsen concentration camp as a member of the British armed forces, traveled to Palestine in 1947 under a false identity (due to restrictions on getting into Palestine at that time), and who in May 1948 fought in the War of Independence.

NEWS FROM THE KETER MINYAN

Recently, a visitor to the Keter Minyan asked why more of the congregation does not wear Tefillin during the weekday morning services. Some of those present replied that they did not understand or appreciate the ritual so felt it was not meaningful to them. I want to begin the discussion concerning Tefillin, by explaining what is contained in each of the two black boxes that comprise a set of Tefillin.

As with the writing of a Torah, the individual charged with writing the scrolls for Tefillin is called a Sofer, or Scribe. The Sofer writes the scrolls on parchment with the specific intent of the scrolls being used for Tefillin.

They must be written in black ink in a specific Ashuri script. The boxes must be perfectly square and stitched with the sinew of a kosher animal. The straps must be black and made of the skin of a kosher animal. The knot of the box placed on the head, “Shel Rosh”, must be tied in a specific way to resemble the Hebrew letter “daled” and the box worn on the arm, “Shel Yad”, must be tied to resemble the Hebrew letter, “Yud”. The knot on the Shel Rosh also resembles the Hebrew letter, “Shin”, so the word “Shaddi”, one of God’s names is formed.

The interior of the Shel Rosh contains four scrolls, the first taken from Deuteronomy 6:4-9, which is the Shema verses, in which the Mitzvah of Tefillin is mentioned, “And thou shall bind them for a sign upon thine hand and they shall be as frontlet between thine eyes”. The other verses are from Exodus 13:1-10 which describes the exodus from Egypt and the consecration of the firstborn, the so-called Kadesh verses. The final two verses are the two renditions of the Vahayah verses, taken from Exodus 13:11-16 and Deuteronomy 11:1321. These four scrolls are each contained within a separate compartment in the Shel Rosh.

In the Shel Yad, there is a single compartment containing all of the four verses in the Shel Rosh written on one scroll. When one goes to purchase a set of Tefillin, one should realize that the quality of the Tefillin are subject to a grading system depending on the quality of the materials used in their construction and the level of intensity of the supervision in their completion.

Usually, the Tefillin with the best quality are graded as “Mehudar”. In my next column we will explore what the “wrapping” is all about.

As we head into the summer months, I hope the spring and holiday season has provided an opportunity for you to be both spiritually and emotionally re-energized. As June approaches, this is a busy time for those of us who have children at home to make and finalize plans for their time off from school. I recently had a discussion with a couple about the pros and cons of sending their children to a Jewish overnight camp. This was an interfaith couple which made the question to Dr. Bob a bit more complicated (but not in the way you might think), but in my experience this dilemma just as often occurs in Jewish couples as well. As a side note, in my experience sending children to a Jewish day camp does not seem to arouse as much angst for couples as sending them to a Jewish overnight camp.

Dear Dr. Bob, Our children are at an age in which both my husband and I agree they can handle overnight camp. I am not Jewish but I have felt very comfortable supporting my husband’s desire to create a Jewish home for our children and providing them with a Jewish education.

I have raised the question about sending them to a Jewish overnight camp (which I am fine with), but my husband is quite resistant to this. Even though I am not Jewish, I am very comfortable with this option. I am confused with what might be going on with my husband. Any thoughts?

Dear Supportive Spouse, If you have followed my column you know that I have a bias on this question. I believe that emersion into a Jewish peer community is a wonderful opportunity for children to help solidify a healthy cultural, religious and spiritual identity. However, with that said, I also know in my line of work that one camp does not fit all. By age 10 or 11 children have begun to form their own social connections and interests and these factors need to be considered. With limited information I will try to respond to what I think you are suggesting that your children are open, flexible and adaptive and the problem is a philosophical one for your husband. The worry of some parents is that their children will be so influenced by their ‘religious indoctrination’ that they may be held in judgment by their religiously/spiritually enlightened child. Or that they will be exposed to 8 hours a day of Torah and prayer, and therefore not have any fun. Having had at one time similar worries, I understand these concerns. But they are very extreme images of a Jewish camp experience and do not represent the child’s experience. You need to explore with your husband why he is uncomfortable with the Jewish camp option; however, as a parent advocate for your children you absolutely have the right to pursue this option if you feel this would be a good fit for them. I would also suggest that you and your husband meet with parents who have chosen to send their children to a Jewish camp, and to meet with the local camp representatives in your community.

Beth Shalom School 5774 – A Retrospective This has happened to you. You look back over a year and it feels as though it has flown by. But simultaneously, you consider the many and various events and experiences that populate that time, and the juxtaposition is surprising. So much done; so little time has passed.

K-2 and Parents: • Our little ones joined us with a song, a story and a big warm welcome from their teachers in Dickler Hall.

• Parent orientation we covered the basics AND talked about the importance of continuing Jewish education beyond the Bat/Bar Mitzvah celebration.

• On a rainy September morning our Men’s Club served coffee curbside, welcoming all Sunday school parents.

• Kindergarten-second grade party melded the complementary themes of Thanksgiving and Chanukah with fun games and learning activities.

• Our Kindergarteners’ Consecration to their Jewish education was poignant and lovely.

• First graders went to the Garoon JCC Science Center as part of their Creation unit.

• Our second graders went on our now fourth annual field trip to the mini-matzah factory in Highland Park.

• Our K-2 Tu B’Shevat Ice Cream Seder was a hit again this year.

Vanilla, mint, chocolate and strawberry – just exactly when does an event that features ice cream become stale?

3rd -8th Graders and Parents: • In October, Joel Grishaver, noted Jewish educational author and publisher, supremely challenged our ethical beliefs in the face of the most difficult issues confronting our community at large.

• In November the clergy, Bob Spector and I presented “Through the Looking Glass: What we do, what our children see, and where it takes us” for parents and students in 5th-8th grades. It provided an avenue for thoughtful conversation about the impact Jewish life, or scarcity thereof, at home.

• In recognition of February being Jewish Disabilities month, Cantor Stoehr brought blind author and speaker Michelle Friedman to the school. Activities designed to foster disability awareness followed her presentation.

• Clergy, Naomi and I started Shehecheyanu Shabbat, a unique Torah-prayer-meditation-learning experience for middle school students and their parents.

• Models Seders in our Hebrew classes were brought back this year. The School Board and faculty set the tables for 186 participants.

• Our Aleph students marked the end of their academic year with the Aleph Siddur Celebration.

• The Bet class joined in with our Men’s Club for the now annual tephillin awareness campaign, the World Wide Wrap • Our Bet class went to Israel (well…). At the Board of Jewish

Education we experienced Israel via an 180 square foot map of our homeland. We “skied” on Mt. Hermon, felt Dead Sea mud on our hands, analyzed the contents of a tel, and got to know about H2O in Israel.

• Our Family Shabbat Services acquired a new feature – Bet class Torah readers. Kudos to our small but growing group of baalei kriah!!

• Our Gimel cohort started “Guerilla Torah Theater.” Led by parent volunteers, the students put together a skit about the week’s Torah portion, and then surprised the other classes with a two minute Torah “commercial.”

• Josh Wolkin, (yes that Josh Wolkin), spoke with our Gimel students about the ARK. Then, Michele Chinsky, ARK employee and Gimel teacher, arranged a field trip to the ARK. Again, our students brought honor to our synagogue.

• Our 5th and 6th graders joined their peers from Congregation Beth Judea for a retreat at Camp Henry Horner. Climbing wall, zip line and in-depth discussions were all exciting in their own ways.

• Our Daled class went to Chicago Jewish Funerals as part of our lifecycle curriculum.

• Our Hay class went to the Holocaust Museum as part of their history curriculum.

• Hay students, in seventh grade, concluded the year with a “Gesher”, or bridge, celebration to emphasize that their journey of Jewish learning would continue into the future.

Gesher post Bar/Bat Mitzvah highlights: • Our 8th graders really did go to Israel on the JUF sponsored Ta’am Yisrael program.

• Teacher Susan Karlinsky and her 11th and 12th grade Gesher students, after learning all about the process of philanthropy, announced to the Board of Trustees their financial awards for this year. This new program was a success and we hope to expand it for the coming year.

All School: • We topped 100 participants with all of our school dinners this year!!

• Clergy visited our students shared their personal Jewish journeys and addressed the youngsters’ questions in small groups.

• Karen Wadler brought Jacqueline Jules to us as a guest author.

Our students wrote their own stories for her and truly wowed our guest. Our children brought honor to our congregation.

• The Purim Carnival was absolutely our best yet, thanks to Men’s Club, Sisterhood, Youth, and the Membership Committee. Partnership makes all the difference.

• Israel Day @ Beth Shalom: In concert with Len Rubin and the Israel Committee, and USY, the school created learning stations which included web-based Jewpardy, an archeological dig, Photo-shopping yourself into Israel, and more.

Last year it was fair to measure our success by the many and varied special programs that we provided for our students and families. This year, in addition, the School Board and I have been hard at work crafting a curriculum that reflects the needs of our community. We are using a methodology for organizing learning outcomes taken from the public education sphere called Understanding by Design. Stay tuned for further developments.

It’s hard to believe that the end of the programming year has arrived. In this column, I would like to talk about the devotion to our chapter and region that some our USY’ers have given this year. For those of you who don’t know, we are very blessed to have had a long string of CHUSY regional presidents come from CBS USY. This year, at our Kinnus convention, Arin Kerstein installed Eli Krule as the incoming CHUSY Regional President. This act was the culmination of an incredible year of leadership for Arin Kerstein. Not only did she run the regional board, but she still found time to be active in our own CBS USY chapter. Also on regional board this year was our own Kevin Medansky and Eli Krule. Julia Braude also co-chaired Kinnus convention. Seeing this much leadership on the regional level trickles down and makes an impact on our chapter and our chapter boards, and I’m glad they were able to make an impact on the region. I know in the upcoming year Eli Krule is going to make us proud, as he already has done up to this point.

With all the regional involvement our chapter has, our chapter board this year was strong as ever. Anyone who entered the Youth Lounge on Thursday nights saw at least 30 high school students laughing and having fun at our programs. This is because of the hard work put in by our entire chapter board.

Our board consisted of Zach Sandler, Eli Susman, Josh Hakimian, Giselle Blocker, Evan Weis, Cayla Rabinowitz, Bari Sigal and Julia Braude. I could go on for hours about every one of them. This group of leaders were not only fun to work with, but it has been a pleasure to see them grow as the year has progressed. Many of them are seniors, and I expect that we will see their involvement in the synagogue once again later in life.

The one program I would like to focus on from this past month was the Bring Your Mother to Lounge Night: Kosher Chili Cookoff. It was a tremendous success, and I want to thank all the parents who came out to the program. Our kids wouldn’t be who they are today without the support of the parents, so it was nice to invite them to our programming.

Our last youth program of the year is on June 1. We will be having an end of the year bash with YFO. This program is open to children ages childbirth-fifth grade. It is going to be a fun day of BBQ, games and we are bringing back Dave Herzog’s Marionette. This event is free, and I hope you will all be able to make it.

2 pints . . . . fresh strawberries 1 C. . . . . . . orange juice 1 1/4 tsp. . . instant tapioca 1/8 tsp. . . . ground allspice 1/8 tsp. . . . cinnamon 1/2 C. . . . . . sugar 1 tsp. . . . . . grated lemon peel 1 T. . . . . . . lemon juice 1 C. . . . . . . buttermilk 4 . . . . . . . . paper thin lemon slices Set aside 6 strawberries. Puree remaining berries in processor strain into 4 quart saucepan. Add orange juice. In a small bowl mix tapioca with 4 tablespoons pureed strawberry mixture. Add to saucepan with allspice and cinnamon. Heat, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to a boil. Cook 1 minute or until thickened. Remove from heat. Pour soup into large bowl. Add sugar, lemon peel, juice and buttermilk and blend well. Slice reserved strawberries and fold into soup. Cover and chill 6 to 8 hours.

Garnish with thin lemon slices to make an attractive presentation!

Our Annual Combined Board meeting is June 18th where we thank our outgoing Executive Board and Board members and welcome new Board participants. Please join us for a barbeque and fun evening.

On June 24 we will welcome the Israeli War Veterans to a beautiful brunch. These brave IDF vets have served the State of Israel and all of us and are touring the US to share their experiences and lives with us. It is always an inspiring and interesting event and you will be glad you came.

It has been a wonderfully full and fulfilling year and we appreciate the congregation’s participation and the wonderful backing of our clergy and our professional staff. We also extend our very best wishes and most heartfelt thanks to Harvey Gold, who truly has been a man and a mensch among Men’s Clubs. We are proud to have successfully launched our Youth Opportunity Fund to bring schools to the Holocaust Museum who might otherwise not be able to afford it. To date we have raised over a third of our three-year commitment and we will welcome your contributions throughout the year.

The CBS Men’s Club Softball team, part of a Midwest federation of Jewish Men’s Club League, is in full swing. You can still join the team for slow pitch 12-inch softball played on Sundays. (Schedule is on website.) The season consists of 10 regular season games plus playoffs and you just need to be a member of our Men’s Club to play. The CBS Men’s Club Golf Outing is coming up to be played on August 10 at Deerfield Golf Club. Based on last year’s success, we will continue to have it on a Sunday afternoon and encourage you to bring wives and/or teenage and older children to play. There will be prizes for the best and worst scores as well as closest-to-the-pin. We will continue our best ball format and encourage you to build your foursomes with either ringers or folks who are just plain fun to play with.

Looking for High Holiday service leaders and song leaders

from the CBS community If you are interested in helping out the community by leading an age-appropriate High Holiday program for children during the peak hour of High Holiday services, we need your help.

We are seeking adults (age 18 or older) who have some experience working with children of any age, and who can conduct services and activities. Must b e e n t h u s i a s t i c a n d e nnjj o y w o r k i n g w i t h c h i l d r e n .

Desirable but not necessary would be skills playing the guitar and leading simple holiday songs.
