I am writing this column on August 3 because our columns are due a month before the bulletin is sent out. I thought seriously about writing about the crisis in Gaza, but found it impossible. The situation is just too fluid to draw conclusions which won’t be in your hands for a month. There will be other opportunities to share our concerns and opinions face to face as time goes on. For now, I can only hope and pray that even before a month from now there will be a cease-fire leading to a negotiation, whereby Israel’s future safety and security must be guaranteed. That goes for any number of other countries where, at the present time, people cannot find the peace we all deserve.

If you have not received it already, you will soon get your assignment for the Yom Kippur afternoon discussion. I am asking everyone to bring the top three things they would like to do during the remainder of their lifetimes; one of them should be Jewish. In that spirit, I want to share the fact that Judy and I this summer did one of the three.

We visited Normandy. We walked along Omaha Beach where the US Armed Forces landed and were awe-struck by the sheer cliffs which our soldiers had to climb to succeed on D-Day. You don’t really appreciate the enormity of it from watching a movie. You feel it, however, when you walk along the beach and when you look down on it from the remains of the German bunkers above. The odds against our success were extraordinary, and the number of soldiers who sacrificed their lives was overwhelming to recall and brought tears to our eyes.

We felt those tears well up most of all as we walked among the thousands of graves at the American military cemetery. We stopped to read many names and where each serviceman was from, thinking about how many parents in this country lost their ever-so-young sons on that day and thereafter. Of course, our attention was drawn to the many Jewish stars among the crosses which filled the perfectly manicured grass as far as the eye could see. Our sadness was matched by our pride in what our country had accomplished, along with our allies who landed on the other beaches nearby. People living in the area have never forgotten what the Allied Forces did for them on that fateful day, for had Hitler won the war, the world would be a terribly different place.

Since our return, we have not stopped thinking or talking about how much our visit to Normandy meant to us. For those who sacrificed their lives we will always remember the words inscribed on the wall of the chapel on the grounds of the cemetery: “Think not only upon their passing. Remember the glory of their spirit.”

When we came home we also watched the NBC Special commemorating the 70th anniversary of D-Day with Brian Williams which focused on four men who landed at Normandy on that fateful day. Their stories brought tears once again to our eyes. They were all in their 90’s, making one last visit to the place where they became the heroes of the “greatest generation.”

I can remember the decade of the 60’s and early 70’s when the soldiers who fought in Vietnam were never given the honor and recognition they deserved for the dangers they endured and the sacrifices they made. True, it was a controversial war, but they were cheated.

Hopefully, in the intervening years, we have taken steps to correct that grievous mistake. For us, visiting Normandy reminded us in a powerful a way that the men and women who have served and continue to serve in the Armed Forces of the United States deserve our lasting appreciation and our consummate respect.

I know how good it feels when I am in an airport and see people in uniform to go over to them and say thank you for your service to our country. In addition, over the last few years, I have officiated at the funerals of some of those heroes from our own congregation who fought in WWII. It is so touching to witness the military honors at the grave side, particularly when one of the soldiers in full dress uniform, after the folding of the American flag draping the coffin presents it to a member of the family with the words “on behalf of a grateful nation.”

Having visited Normandy this July, Judy and I are more grateful than ever to the “greatest generation” and to every generation who serves our nation in our Armed Forces. It is a gratitude which we will always feel and always express.

I heard someone speak about a drug problem they had when they were young. They relayed to the audience that it was consistent and persistent and that they still felt the effects until this day. It is not uncommon for childhood habits and exposures to linger within a person long after the initial engagement with the incident or the “antagonist” is over.

Abandonment, harassment, physical and mental abuse and other such early life issues can cause immediate and lasting scarring or they may lie dormant for years only to resurface at the instigation of some trigger.

This article is not meant to be AN ALERT TO ABUSE but if it serves as such, so !be !it. !

The “drug” issue that the speaker was referring to was church attendance and religious school. He recalls being ‘drug’ to school despite his kicking and screaming, and he recalls being ‘drug’ to church services every week with his parents. He viewed it all as a ‘drug problem’ and sought numerous ways to escape its clutches. He would hide, fake illness and write forged notes from school informing the parents that class was to be cancelled. He would rather have been ‘drug’ to almost anywhere else besides church. But, he now comments, all of those ‘drugs’ made an impact on him. All of the subliminal learning he was getting, all of the exposure to church etiquette and mores he picked up and all of the lessons about his faith which were imbued into him during those classes always remained a part of his fiber. In Yiddish it is referred to as the Pintele Yid, the small ember of coal which sits inside of each of us waiting to be fanned by just the right influence so that the coal sparks and the fire once again burns warmly.

So come study at CBS this year. Come to services more often. Come and enjoy the constant social opportunities. As we learn in Jewish and secular resources, “Don’t put off for tomorrow what can be done today, for tomorrow you may not have the time”.

What will be that experience which fans the Pintele Yid inside of you or one of your family? Might it be a Men’s Club event, or maybe a High Holiday service? Might it be that Hebrew School teacher who captures your child’s imagination and stands before him/her as that perfect role model of balance as a Conservative Jew or that peer in their Kadima or USY group?

The more our kids (and other family members) get “drug” to CBS the more opportunities there will be to incite in them the pride which we all feel for being Jewish. If it doesn’t take immediate effect, well then maybe it will sit passively until that one day when the winds of some influential person or happening begins to fan away at the ember. And it will have been due to your influence TODAY that brings forth the warming joys of their Yiddishkeit.

We would also like to encourage our students to participate in the mitzvah of feeding the hungry through the High Holiday Food Drive as well, by bringing in at least one appropriate food item each time they come in the building during September.

Food can be dropped off in either the collection cabinet located near the CBS front entrance or the collection cabinet located by the school entrance.

At this special time of the year, we feel a renewed energy about our Judaism and the spirit and feelings that the High Holidays bring to us. Now it is our challenge to capture that energy and use it for the entire coming year. I have seen many examples of this energy and spirit serving as your President.

The excitement of our young adults celebrating B'nai Mitzvot, the buzz in the halls of our school, the Northbrook Park District Summer Camp and the addition of Little Ones to CBS which has enlivened our building in so many ways. Add in all of our regularly scheduled programming, classes and services and you have a building and community that serves thousands of people 365 days a year. If I didn't see the magnitude of this before, this past year has shown me all that happens here at CBS. If you are not partaking in the variety of items on our menu, I invite you to try something new. STRETCH yourself and come to minyan, take a class, attend a program or enroll your kids to enrich their Jewish identity. I KNOW that you will be pleasantly surprised.

Make sure you take a minute to meet our new Executive Director, Michael Garlin, who started in June. Ever since, he has immersed himself in learning about the operations and people of CBS. As we approach the High Holidays and this busiest time of the year, we want to make sure that everyone at Congregation Beth Shalom is aware of the planned retirement of our Senior Rabbi Carl Wolkin. For the past few years, Rabbi Wolkin and his wife Judy have been planning his retirement for June 30, 2015. Judy has recently retired from her position at Solomon Schechter Day School, where she taught for many years.

They plan on staying in the community and Rabbi Wolkin will serve CBS as Rabbi Emeritus.

Please mark your calendars for Sunday, June 28, 2015, when our community will honor Rabbi and Judy for the 35 years they have served our Congregation. Details of this celebration will follow in a few months.

Rabbi Wolkin will serve CBS this year as he has done in the past years, maintaining his regular schedule of classes and responsibilities. We look forward to a smooth transition to Rabbi Aaron Melman, who will assume the position of head Rabbi. We plan on hiring an assistant Rabbi to join us next July. Our congregation is thrilled that Rabbi and Judy will be active in the Beth Shalom community for many years to come.

WHEN THE SHOFAR BLOWS...

The first time I can remember going to synagogue was Rosh Hashanah services. I don’t remember how old I was at the time and I don’t remember where we were, however what I do remember is the Shofar.

The Biblical name for this holiday is called Yom Teruah or the Feast of Trumpets, something I played in junior high, yes the trumpet not the shofar. Although I did ask my band director if I could play the shofar and he just stared at me.

The shofar is blown in long, short and staccato blasts that follow a set sequence: Teki’ah (long sound) Shavarim (3 broken sounds) Teru’ah (9 short sounds) Teki’ah Gedolah (very long sound) Shevarim Teru’ah (3 broken sounds followed by 9 short sounds) The total number of blasts on Rosh Hashanah is 100.

Now back in the day, obviously a long long time ago the shofar was used to announce holidays and the Jubilee year. The first day of the seventh month – Tishri – is termed “a memorial of blowing”.

The shofar was also used for signifying the start of a war. Later, it was also employed in processions, as musical accompaniment and eventually it was inserted into the temple orchestra by David.

This year as we celebrate Rosh Hashanah, I can’t help but think of Israel. Our fellow Jews on the Jewish New Year in the State of Israel. All it took was one special trip with my family to the holy land and my love for Israel continues to grow. It’s hard to believe and understand that all of our ancestors came from this special place.

This year when the shofar blows I will look towards Israel and pray for the safety of our people. When the shofar blows I will pray hard for the rockets and tunnels to disappear from GAZA. When the shofar blows I will pray hard for anti-Semitism to reverse its course in Europe once again. When the shofar blows I will think of all the soldiers that lost their lives fighting for what is so important to the Jewish people. When the shofar blows I will think of all of the 60+ families that will desperately miss their loved ones. When the shofar blows I will think of my own family and wish them a wonderful new year.

When the shofar blows I will always think of peace for the people of Israel.

THE FESTIVAL OF SUKKOT

The fall festival of Sukkot, commemorating the protection given the Jewish people throughout their wanderings in the wilderness, is described in the Torah as a harvest at the end of the agricultural year (Exodus 23:16).

Concerning the manner of celebrating the seven days of Sukkot, which begins on the fifteenth of the month of Tishrei, we read: “You shall dwell in booths seven days . . . that your generations may know that I made the Israelites dwell in booths.” (Leviticus 23:42-43).

The eighth day of Sukkot, called Atzeret (closing day of the festival season), is regarded as a separate holy day, characterized by the special prayer for rain (Geshem), by Yizkor services in memory of the departed, and by the recital of the book of Ecclesiastes which contains reflections on the purpose of life and human's ceaseless strivings.

According to Maimonides, the moral lesson derived from the festival of Sukkot is that one should remember his or her bad times in his or her days of prosperity; he or she will thereby lead a modest life. Therefore, we leave our elegant homes to dwell in booths that are reminiscent of desert life lacking in all convenience and comfort.

On the other hand, Sukkot is kept in the autumn season when the produce has been gathered in from the fields and farmers are free from pressing labor, when there is neither great heat nor troublesome rain and it is possible to dwell in booths, even though they are hastily constructed and unsubstantial.

The four species, of which the lulav (palm branch) is the most prominent, are symbolical expression of our rejoicing over the change from life in the wilderness to life in a country replete with fruit trees and rivers.

These particular four species (lulav, etrog, hadassim, aravot) were plentiful in Eretz Yisrael, and were easily obtainable by everybody. Besides, they have a good appearance; two of them, the citron (etrog) and myrtle (hadas), diffuse fragrance; they keep fresh and green for seven days. .. (guide, 3:43). The last day of this festival period is Simchat Torah when we rejoice that we have concluded the reading of the entire Torah and we begin it anew. It is a joyous culmination of the entire Holiday Season.

By Harold Schwartz Recently, we had a discussion at our daily breakfast concerning the role of the morning minyan in the life of the Synagogue. Most agreed that it is the cornerstone of the Synagogue allowing individuals to participate in communal prayer and discharging their obligation of saying Kaddish, for those in mourning or observing a Yahrzeit.

Kaddish is a prayer that sanctifies God’s name and expresses the desire to establish His kingdom on earth. The word Kaddish means “sanctification” and as such it is only recited in the presence of a Minyan. The emotional reaction to this prayer is reflected in the instances in which it is recited, namely during a period of mourning or a Yahrzeit. The first mention of mourners reciting the Kaddish prayer at the end of the service is in the thirteenth century writing called the Or Zaruah. The Kaddish was designated as the “Mourners Kaddish” and recited at the conclusion of the prayers. Since then, the number of times the Mourners Kaddish is recited during Shacharit daily worship has expanded to three times during the service.

Kaddish contains no reference to death, yet it is the prayer recited by mourners. One explanation is that it is said to be an expression of acceptance of God’s judgment and righteousness at a time when a person may easily become bitter and reject God. Another explanation for mourners saying Kaddish is that by sanctifying God’s name in public, the mourners increase the merit of the deceased. Kaddish is a prayer where relatives can continue to show respect for their relatives even after death.

The earliest version of Kaddish dates back to the time of the Second Temple. The Kaddish was the “Half Kaddish” and recited by the Chazan several times during a service.Kaddish was originally not said by mourners, but by Rabbis when they completed a sermon or a section of Torah or Talmud study.

This practice originated in Babylonia and recited in the language of the region, in Aramaic; hence the Kaddish prayer remained in that language. The “Rabbi Kaddish” or” Rabbanan Kaddish” is said today during the morning service after completing a portion of study. While anyone can recite this Kaddish, it is customary for only mourners to do so.

I hope you are all enjoying this wonderful stretch of summer we are having. As I am writing this column my 17 year old daughter is in week five of her six weeks in Israel as part of her Camp Ramah Israel Seminar program. So how can I not dedicate this month’s column to the ways spending time in Israel impacts the development of a child’s Jewish identity? Needless to say, this has been a particularly challenging summer to have a child in Israel. Fortunately, we were able to visit Rachel during our two weeks in Israel in July, receiving the reassurance from her that she was fine and from her program leadership that our child’s safety would not be compromised.

What I have learned from my two weeks in Israel and am learning from Rachel is that being a Jew in America is a much different experience than being a Jew in Israel. For those of us who are primarily secular Jews , our ‘Jewishness’ tends to be defined by the degree to which we are religiously affiliated and engaged in synagogue life. We feel Jewish when we are involved in Jewish activities. What I experienced in Israel and what I believe my daughter is experiencing based on our conversations is that in Israel being Jewish is a state of being 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Attending services, going to Hebrew school, celebrating our customs and traditions, joining a Jewish youth group, and active participation in synagogue life all promote and help develop a Jewish identity, but to understand what it means to be a Jew, nothing matches spending time in Israel. Israel represents our roots- our past, our present, and our future.

Spending time there is an opportunity to create greater meaning to what we do here.

Now, with that said, are there any guarantees that my children (all of whom have been to Israel) will marry someone Jewish? Of course not, but does the greater connection they feel to their heritage that their trips to Israel have provided them facilitate their desire to pass it on to the next generation of Spector/Meyers children? First things first: School is again coming to life! Our faculty, old and new, are excited, organized and ready to train our next generation of Jewish leaders. Check our website regularly for updates about all the activities and learning that we have in store. ***** This summer I had the opportunity to travel professionally to Israel.

The Board of Jewish Education’s Director of Education, Rolly Cohen, received a call that a participant in the Melton trip to Israel was cancelling at the last moment. She asked. I said yes, after conferring with the appropriate people, (of course my wife Melissa first). Here is how the Melton Centre describes itself.

The Melton Centre at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is a vibrant academic community, characterized by its intellectual effervescence, its pluralistic approach and its commitment to the sustainability of Jewish culture and heritage through diverse forms of education… The Melton Centre’s mission is to develop cutting edge research, to educate future leaders, and to nurture future generations of outstanding scholars and practitioners in all fields and forms of Jewish education.

The seminar I attended exceeded my every expectation. Credit first and last goes to Haim Aronovitz. His gentle manner, encyclopedic knowledge and unwillingness to let a single minute of our time together pass without learning defined our experience. He is a generous teacher, welcoming and validating insights from every perspective. His love of Israel informs every lesson. My heartfelt thanks to him for the gift he gave our group.

Our program was well structured. In every location we encountered an arc of history that resonated for our own time. In that manner all of our learning was intrinsically relevant. For example, our second day was spent in Jerusalem. We began with the lay of the land, and the narrative of the Akedah (Binding of Isaac). The geography provided midrashic insights inaccessible from the text alone. We moved from the Jewish family to the Jewish nation and the connection between King David and his capital city.

Then we went underground and saw the excavations from the Second Temple period, and encountered the fracturing religious and social forces of their time. Our evening conversation was punctuated by comparisons between then and now, and how we could bring this to life for our

students.

Director of Curriculum Morey Schwartz receives kudos for the structure of the program. When we visited his home I met his son Akiva who was just about to start his military service. His assignment gave us pause. You only need to spend a few days in Israel to connect with the young people who must put themselves in harm’s way for the protection of our homeland. Akiva, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

The accommodations were very good. I love the Dan Panorama hotel in Jerusalem. But our Internet reception in the rooms was not good, forcing us to go to the common areas of the hotel where we ran into old friends and made many new ones. My wife jokes that there are 500 Jews and the rest is done with mirrors. Nowhere does that feel more true than in the Dan Panorama lobby. And my favorite part – running into our Beth Shalom families at the hotel’s breakfast buffet.

The trip yielded practical outcomes. I gained new insights and educational tools to share with our teachers. A colleague who was also in this group is working with me to develop both lessons and a resource bank that we will share.

In sum, the trip was energizing and generated new ideas and methods for teaching about Israel and our people’s history.

Welcome back everyone!

I’m so happy to be starting my third year at Beth Shalom. Summer was amazing, and we are ready to kick off the year with some amazing programs.

This year we are shaking things up a bit with our programming, creating an 8th grade only program in addition to all our other programs. The 8th grade program, called Pre-USY will feature our youth planning 1-2 large scaled programs for 8th graders, before they are eligible for our USY chapter on January 1st. In addition to this, Kadima will now be open to grades 5-7th grade. I am excited to see our youth program grow and flourish.

One program I wanted to mention, was the teen Israel gathering we held at Beth Shalom on August 20th. Led by Carl Schrag and cosponsored by JUF and Congregation Beth Shalom, we were able to bring together teens from all over the Chicago community to stand with Israel. They were given a course on Israel education and how to stand up for Israel, given the way it has been depicted in the media and within social media. It was a program we put together last minute, as we saw a need to offer our teens services of some sort before returning for this school year. I would like to thank everyone who was involved for putting on this program.

As the high holidays approach, I would like to encourage everyone to support our youth group, and purchase honey from High Holiday ticket pickup, and come get your car washed from our USY’ers on Sunday, September 7th. It is always nice for our youth to see the support from the synagogue, and it is definitely appreciated.

I look forward to sharing many more amazing upcoming programs with you in next month’s bulletin. Have an amazing Rosh Hashanah and beginning of the year!

L’Shana Tova! As the New Year approaches, I thought it would be perfect timing to introduce myself as Beth Shalom’s new librarian. My name is Stephanie Gelb and after six years as a children’s librarian with the Chicago Public Library, I am so excited to join the CBS community. If you haven’t had a chance to visit the library it’s time to CHECK US OUT. We house over 12,000 items in print, CDs, and DVDs covering a wide range of Judaic topics including Bible, spirituality, history, holidays, cooking, fiction and much more. We provide Judaic materials not readily available in the wider secular community that will support and enhance various programs of the synagogue and provide a framework for lifelong learning among congregational members. We are the center for Jewish learning and provide quality materials about the history, practices and beliefs of Judaism, as well as its relevance to our lives today. And we don’t charge library fines.

Grace Reinhart Sachs is the main character in the excellent novel, You Should Have Known, by Jean Hanff Korelitz. Grace is a successful Manhattan marriage therapist who has just completed her first book, You Should Have Known. She believes that she has an uncanny ability to see the “snares” that lay ahead in relationships and help people avoid them. Her life seems ideal.

She is married to Jonathan, a pediatric oncologist, and they have a 12-year-old son, Henry. They live in the apartment Grace grew up in and Henry’s private school is the one Grace attended.

Grace’s father and stepmother live near by. They have no contact with Jonathan’s family.

A cell phone message turns an ordinary Thursday into a nightmare. A mother of a student in Henry’s school is murdered.

Grace wants to tell Jonathan about the tragedy. She believes he is at a conference in Cincinnati, but she cannot reach him. He is not responding to email and she discovers he has left his cell phone in his nightstand. Grace and Henry attend Shabbat dinner at her father’s apartment, but Grace has no idea where Jonathan is. Soon the police are formally questioning Grace and she begins seeking answers about her husband. Korelitz’s superb writing may leave the reader feeling hypocritical. Is it fair to root for Grace while practically chanting, she should have known?

Amazing Adult Learning Opportunity...

Melton Year 1 Now Offered at CBS!

For the first time in recent history, Congregation Beth Shalom will be a site location for the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning in 2014-2015 (5775)! We will host the first half of the year at CBS and Solomon Schechter Day School (a mere mile from CBS) will host the second half of the year. (Be sure to read all the way to the bottom for an exciting scholarship offer!)

The Melton program is a two-year educational program designed to offer adults a well-rounded, in-depth study of Judaism in a userfriendly environment.

In a format developed at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, adult learners from diverse backgrounds learn about our heritage and culture in an intellectually stimulating, non- denominational environment.

Students explore classic Jewish sources, from biblical through contemporary texts, and investigate issues of Jewish thought, practice, ethics and Jewish history.

Included in the text centered Core Curriculum: Year 1 (28-30 sessions) Rhythms of Jewish Living examines the Jewish calendar, holidays, and life-cycle events. Students explore ideas, beliefs and practices that define Jewish life.

Purposes of Jewish Living explores Jewish thought and beliefs.

Essential Jewish theological concepts are presented through in-depth examination of the Bible, Talmud and other sacred texts.

Year 2 (28-30 sessions) Ethics of Jewish Living addresses the relationship between Jewish life and ethical behavior. The focus is on how Jewish tradition shapes our relationship with other human beings.

Dramas of Jewish Living presents significant moments that have shaped Jewish history from the biblical period through the formation of the modern State of Israel.

BECOME A DOCENT AT THE HOLOCAUST MUSEUM

Joel Greenman has been a docent at the Holocaust Museum and recommends becoming a docent: One of the most rewarding things that I have gotten involved in since I retired from the active practice of Medicine has been the Illinois Holocaust Museum. Since Illinois was the first state to mandate the teaching of Holocaust studies in middle school, we get thousands of children coming through the museum everyday as part of their curriculum. As a Docent, I get to experience the “I didn’t know that” moment of so many of these kids most of whom are not Jewish and have just started to learn about this most important historical event. The Museum is starting a new training session for Docents starting in October of 2014. You can join the many other Beth Shalom volunteers who give of their time to this most important institution. For those of you that do not know us, we are Leatte Gelfeld and Beth Sher, your Sisterhood Co-Presidents. We are excited to be given this opportunity and look forward to an eventful year ahead for Sisterhood and the Congregation. We are fortunate to have the guidance of Marti Sinton, who just ended her 3 year term as president and many past Sisterhood Presidents. Each of them have been incredibly supportive and we appreciate all offers to help. We would also like to welcome Michael Garlin to CBS and know the coming year will be very successful. The theme for this year’s Torah Fund campaign is Mispachah-Family. Our diverse Jewish families provide the solid system of roots that supports our Tree of Life. Accordingly, this year’s Torah Fund Pin has been designed especially by Eytan Brandes to reflect this theme.

For over 70 years, the aim of the Torah Fund campaign is to ensure that Conservative/Masorti Judaism lives and thrives.

Women’s League for Conservative Judaism and the Torah Fund provide financial support to the institutions which serve to educate our future rabbis, cantors, and scholars; The Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in Los Angeles, The Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem, and the Seminario Rabinico Latinoamericano in Buenos Aires.

The Two-Headed Monster Returns L ‘Shana Tova! We are excited and delighted to begin our sophomore/senior year of CBS Men’s Club copresidency. We want to thank our Executive Board, Board and members for a great

year of old, new and re-engineered events.

Here are a few quick highlights of what your support of Men’s Club has enabled: • Utilized our 2014 Yom Ha Shoah Yellow Candle campaign to create the Congregation Beth Shalom Men’s Club Student Opportunity Scholarship Fund at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Educational Center. This will enable underprivileged students from around the upper Midwest who would otherwise not be able to do so, to learn about tolerance and standing up against injustice that they see, and doubled our prior fundraising efforts.

• Sold 1,345 Lox Boxes, 550+ of which were donated to the ARK and Council of Jewish Elderly • With great assistance from Cantor Stoehr, we did first ever Worldwide Wrap in the “Wround” and tied up a crowd of 150.

• Hosted new breakfast speakers from the Jewish National Fund and the Anti-Defamation League.

• Helped found the Men’s Club Softball League inaugural season and won the regular season. Unfortunately the Playoffs were short lived, but wait until next year!

• Our membership has grown to 460 men, largest in the Midwest region and one of the largest in the country Mark your calendars for these exciting programs planned for the coming few months: • Our Opening Dinner is Wednesday, September 17 and features former Bulls #1 draft pick and 10 year NBA veteran Sidney Green. As a Men’s Club member, the dinner is complementary.

Every day 1500 blood donors are needed. For over 40 years, Congregation Beth Shalom has responded by hosting a Blood Drive. The CBS Blood Drive this past Spring was a huge success, please help make this one just as successful!

WHO CAN DONATE BLOOD? Healthy adults, ages 17 and older (16 with parental permission) who weigh at least 110 pounds. Picture ID required.

IS IT SAFE? Donating blood poses no health risks.

WHY SHOuLD I DONATE? A pint of blood is separated into three components, so in only an hour you can potentially save three lives!

“Maot Chitim” refers to the centuries old custom of gathering wheat to provide the poor with matzoh and other items for the observance of Pesach.

Maot Chitim of Great Chicago started over a century ago and has evolved into a year-round volunteer effort, searching for the best and most reasonably priced Kosher products that delivers food packages to Jewish familes in need. There are many ways to help Maot Chitim of Great Chicago accomplish its noble mission. They need volunteers to help pack Rosh Hashanah food packages on Sunday September 14, 2014 and volunteers to help deliver packages on Sunday, September 21, 2014.

Flu Shots at Congregation Beth Shalom

Sunday, September 28th, 2014

Walgreens will be providing flu shots at our synagogue from 8am to noon. The shots will be free for those who have Medicare Part B or well-care insurance, and $25 cash for all others. Children ages 10-18 can receive the vaccine with parental consent. Appointments are not necessary. If, however, you would like to reserve a particular time, please email Arlene Handler at arlyh@aol.com.
