RABBI FERRATIER’S FINDINGS I’ve said before that even though I’ve been at CBS less than a year, it’s sometimes hard to remember life before I was here. Most of the time this is a good thing; it means that I feel comfortable and at home. It means that most people are familiar enough that they don’t feel like strangers (sometimes even if I’m meeting them for the first time)! The downside is that people often assume I know more about CBS as an institution, and the people who create the CBS community than I actually do. I’ve had real conversations where I’ve had to ask, “now when did this happen?” or “I think I must be missing a crucial part of this story, could you please fill me in?” There is usually a surprised pause, and then we laugh, and the person obliges. I find that it’s human nature that we are very quick to share information that really isn’t anyone’s business, or might be viewed as gossip, and slow to share the things that the community should know. I can think of numerous times in other communities where I’ve heard the details of someone’s affair, but not heard that someone else was in a major car accident. Rabbi Ferratier

It has even happened that I’ve occasionally had someone say to me “You know, Rabbi, so-and-so is really disappointed that they were ill/in the hospital/became a grandparent/moved and you didn’t say anything to them.” Of course I’m always very sorry to have disappointed someone, but I can’t call someone to share in their happiness or hardship if I don’t know about it. It may feel as though I’ve been here all along, but in actuality, I’m new enough that I have not yet developed my go-to sources of information. If there’s something you think I should know, please tell me about it. Now, of course, this isn’t an invitation to come in and give me all of the dirt on our community. However, this is my way of saying that if you know someone in the community is suffering or rejoicing, check with them first, and then let me, Rabbi Melman, Cantor Stoehr, or someone on the Mitzvah Committee know. Our tradition tells us that every Jew is responsible for every other Jew. One of the best ways to live this dictum is by taking care of the people in our community. Being wise about what to share, when to share it, and with whom is one of the elements that binds us together as a synagogue.
