RABBI FERRATIER’S FINDINGS Rabbi Ferratier

As you read this, I will be weeks away from marking the end of my first year at CBS. Given how serious and crazy the world we live in has become, I thought I would try to encapsulate my first year in a less- serious, though still sincere manner. Perhaps I’m betraying my age, but I thought it might be fun to describe my first year in the form of a David Letterman-style Top 10 List. Here it is: The Top 10 Reasons I’ve Loved My First Year at CBS

10. The candy we give out during Adon Olam - It’s always nice seeing the children who come to services, and seeing the smiles on both children and adults (whether it’s because the kids are cute or because the service is almost over!). I want our young members to feel comfortable on the bima, and I have no qualms about bribing them to get them up there! 9. The library - In my opinion, the library is one of the most under-utilized resources at CBS. Whether I need to find a story to read for Shabbat With a Twist, research a source for a sermon, or find a novel to read on Shabbat afternoon, the library has such a great collection and I’ve never been disappointed. 8. The food - You may laugh, but food is one of the elements that brings a community together. Whether it’s schmoozing with all of you at Shabbat Kiddush over homemade kugel, noshing bagels with the morning minyan, or learning to braid challah at the Great Challah Bake, the food at CBS has given me the opportunity to get to know so many people. One of my colleagues likes to joke that “bad kiddush explains the decline of liberal Judaism” but I think we can safely say that it’s not a problem at CBS! 7. The school - Most of my work has been behind the scenes, but I’ve met at least weekly (and usually more) with Stacy Ybarra to consult on curriculum, to act as clergy advisor, and to plan the events that make our Religious School one of the top in the region. In the next year I look forward to teaching Tefillah in the lower grades, working more closely with the 6th and 7th graders, and continuing to teach CBS High. 6. USY- As a high school teacher, I loved working with teenagers, and this year, I’ve really enjoyed getting to interact with our teens outside the confines of a classroom. I meet with our Youth Director, Eric Golberg, almost daily so that we can make sure that CBS is a major source of community and formation of Jewish Identity at this crucial age. Over the past year, I’ve gotten to make videos, participate in the programming, and just hang out. Since the beginning of quarantine, I’ve had the pleasure of hosting a well-attended weekly parasha discussion with the teens. I can’t wait to see what next year holds! 5. The Adult Education classes - It’s such a change from my teaching experience in the public schools, because everybody who comes is eager to learn. I’ve been consistently impressed by the knowledge base, the curiosity, and the openness to new ideas displayed by all of our adult learners. An eager student is a joy to teach, and CBS is filled with them! (continued on page 3)
