THAT OLD BLACK GOLD IS RUNNING - Harvest 2015 is well in hand and the weatherman has cooperated so far. The hot, humid weather ripened the crops and this season can be considered ‘an early harvest’ on most accounts. Summer Day Camp wraps up by Samantha Janssens, Recreation summer student Deloraine Winchester Tourism and Recreation ran summer day camps for kids aged 3-12 this past summer. This is the first summer a program of this nature has been offered in the community and it was very well received! Throughout the summer 39 kids participated in different sessions that ran July 6 through until August 13. Liza Park (EDO/Recreation Director) and Sam Janssens (summer student) went on three day trips with the kids to the International Peace Garden, Souris, and Old Deloraine on Mondays in July. Sam also ran three-day camps for six weeks on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Five of these camps were ran in Town and one camp was held at Lake Metigoshe. The kids had the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities including crafts, cooking, outdoor games, board games, scavenger hunts, and theme days including Science Day and Disney Day. Day camp offered the kids a chance to learn and develop new skills while having fun with their peers. The program was really lucky this year with the weather and we were able to spend most of our days outdoors! Deloraine Winchester Tourism and Recreation have a number of thank yous that made their summer program possible this year. Appreciation is extended to Wayne Innes and the Handivan for taking us on our day trips. The kids really enjoyed riding in the Handivan. Also appreciation to the Harvest Church and Angela Lay for the use of the craft room at the church as well as the kitchen facilities for our kids in the kitchen program. Thank you to Boundary Co-op for donation of product for our kids in the kitchen program. A shout out to Rob Maynard for being our projectionist for our movie days at the Theatre and to the Pool staff for supervising and lifeguarding during our mornings spent at the Pool. Finally, thank you to the RM of Deloraine Winchester for the use of their facilities and resources for day camp!

Maguire officially registered as candidate (Continued from Page 3) “I pledge to work alongside stakeholders and community leaders to connect Westman residents with available jobs through targeted measures.” Since 2006, the Government of Canada has supported business and industry associations to work alongside post-secondary education institutions to better align their curriculum with the needs of employers. The Government has also expanded eligibility for the Low-and Middle-Income Canada Students Grants to include short duration programs, and reformed the Canada Student Loan Program by reducing the expected parental contribution under the needs assessments process. Maguire concluded, “I will continue to be a strong voice for Westman and support policies that will lead to the creation of new high-paying jobs. Even though we’ve accomplished a lot, there is still much more to do.” To get in touch with the Larry Maguire campaign, Westman residents can call Campaign HQ at 204-717-4001 or visit the office located at 2940 Victoria Avenue (previous CKX building) in Brandon. Chamber meets for August by Judy Wells The August meeting of the Deloraine Chamber of Commerce was held on August 13 at the Rendezvous Restaurant with eight members in attendance. President Shirley Bell welcomed all and opened the meeting. The agenda and minutes of the July meeting were approved. Correspondence included a Manitoba Chamber of Commerce Policy Resolutions booklet. As well, Shirley reports receiving several calls from the Winnipeg Free Press about advertising in the MBiz magazine (Manitoba Chamber magazine). It was agreed Chamber would not be buying advertising in this publication. Treasurer’s report Chamber continues to have a healthy bank balance due to another successful beer garden. A motion was made to give $1,000 to the Deloraine EMS towards the stretcher fund. This donation was in regard to Deloraine EMS being on site for the bull riding event on Friday, July 17, and is Deloraine Chamber’s contribution to the Deloraine Fair 2015. Fair review - Beer garden and parade were both successful. Recreation/EDO report: Farmer’s Market - Liza reported that the September 3 Farmer’s Market will have a Family Day theme. Chamber will host the lunch

on this day (pulled beef on a bun). Treasure Tour - This event will not be going forward this year as there are many auctions and town wide sales already planned. Tourism Westman - Liza is now the chair of this committee. She reports they are

preparing a booklet which highlights winter events in Westman. Chamber’s “Light-Up” event will be listed in the booklet. Town Website - The new site is ready to go and the new e-mail is delowin.ca Summer Camp - This program will be wrapping

up this week. They enjoyed the out of town trips and several in town programs. Prairie Skills Tracey Raikes reported there will be another “Power Up” course offered. The next Chamber meeting will be Thursday, September 10.

LIFESAVING INSTRUCTION - These students were learning lifesaving techniques at the Deloraine-Winchester Swimming Pool on Wednesday, August 19. These skills are very important as a life skill and for advancing to becoming lifeguards and instructors. PHOTOS/JUDY WELLS

Odds & Ends Let’s give a big ‘shout out’ to the Oildome AAA Pee Wee team for their fourth place finish in the Western Canadians held in Coquitlam, BC, last week. They had some great games, some heartbreakers and probably one they’d like to forget. But, they earned the right to go in the first place which is a really big deal in itself. And, they played in the bronze game, coming up just a bit short on medalling. Congratulations on playing some excellent baseball. Hope you all enjoyed the experience. • • • Harvest is in full swing. . .there are lots of crops already taken off. The hot, humid weather brought the crops to fruition early this season. The yields are reported to be good to above average. Check out the harvesting pictures in this week’s issue. I apologize in advance if I got the wrong names on any picture - sometimes I was assuming who might be in the combine or whose land it was. . .my family will be so embarrassed if I’m wrong. In fact, it may be that they gave me false information when I asked “who farms here” and “who farms there”. And, of course, ‘they’ means Kelly! • • • A big shout out to Deloraine-Winchester Recreation Department for hosting the Summer Day Camp program this year. This was a fantastic opportunity for kids to take part in a variety of activities every week. They even had day trips which were really enjoyed. This was the first year for the program. Encourage your Rec. Dept. to continue next year. • • • The Farmer’s Market on Thursday, September 3, will be considered a ‘Family Day’ theme. Deloraine Chamber will be hosting a pulled beef lunch and there will be activities for the kids. Mark your calendar. • • • It’s getting closer to ‘back to school’ time which seems really late this year. Students head back to the school halls on Wednesday, September 9, which is three weeks from today (time of writing August 19). Speaking of ‘Back to School’ here are a few jokes on the subject: A book never written : “The Best Subject in School” by Jim Class. • • • Why did the M&M go to school? I’m stumped. Because he really wanted to be a Smartie. (groan) • • • Why was the teacher wearing sunglasses to school? Because she had bright students! (another groaner) • • • A book never written “High School Math” by Cal Q. Luss • • • Stevie: Mom, I got 100 in school today! Mom: That’s great. What in? Stevie: A 40 in Reading and a 60 in Spelling. • • • Teacher: Daniel, I’ve had to send you to the principal’s office every day this week. What do you have to say for yourself. Daniel: I’m glad it’s Friday.

VANMACKELBERG In loving memory of Maurice VanMackelberg who passed away August 22, 2013. I often sit and think of him when I am all alone. For memory is the only friend that grief can call its own; Like ivy on the withered oak, when all other things decay, My love for him will still keep green and never fade away. ~ Lovingly remembered and sadly missed by your loving wife, Mary.
