Jesse Peters’ Vintage Christmas concert

Jesse Peters’ Vintage Christmas concert, held December 9, was a perfect way to get into the spirit of the season. This was the fourth instalment of Southwest Showcase 2015-16 concert series. Three amazing musicians for this tour, including singer Lindsay Nagy of Edmonton, Chris Ulrich from Winnipeg and Travis Switzer of Edmonton, joined Peters. Patrons enjoyed many favourite Christmas songs including “I’m Dreaming of A White Christmas”, “Walking in a Winter Wonderland”,

“Jingle Bell Rock” and a delightful rendition of “I Don’t Want Nuttin’ For Christmas”. In case anyone was weary of winter, Nagy performed “Island Boy”, a song she wrote about being in the tropics. Peters wrote a beautiful song based on “What Child Is This?” and delivered it with deep conviction and passion. Nagy sang her favourite Christmas song - “Baby It’s Cold Outside”. “Music is a very important part of my life and it’s just not Christmas without “O Holy Night”. This was

truly an inspired and powerful performance. It was time for a bit of gospel with the dynamic delivery of “Go Tell It On The Mountain”. It seems one of the most popular movies shown around Christmas is “The Sound of Music”. Nagy performed a lovely rendition of “My Favourite Things”. At concert time there was no snow on the ground and Manitoba was experiencing a very mild winter, so Peters felt safe in singing “Let It Snow”. (Note: His influence must have

worked and we’ll have a white Christmas after all). The group performed an all time favourite “Lean on Me” which Peters turned into “Jingle Bells” part way through. His fellow musicians were as surprised as the audience but being professionals they didn’t miss a beat. Nagy was happy to sing her all time favourite Blues song - “At Last”. Like athletes leave it all out on the ice or field, these musicians left it all out on the stage. They performed with all their heart and soul and wowed the audience with their talents. Chamber meets for year’s end by Judy Wells Deloraine & District Chamber of Commerce members met at Country Garden Inn for a delicious meal on Thursday, December 3. Shirley Bell, president, opened the meeting. The November minutes were reviewed and accepted. It was decided that the January meeting would be used as a time to brainstorm and review events. Correspondence was distributed and reviewed. The treasurer’s report was given and accepted. Discussion re: Parade float. It was suggested it might be an idea to partner with Tourism on this project. Old Business Light Up For Christmas review: This annual event went over very well with a record turnout, thanks in large part to the mild weather. Santa joining the kids on the trailer rides was a big hit. The vendors were busy at Simplicity and the Dand 4-H was kept very busy with their hot dogs/ hot chocolate and bake sale. The two new features went over well:

FOR SALE OR RENT

• Photo booth in back of Simplicity with Victoria Morningstar as photographer; and • Christmas Cheer drop-off at Laundromat. Those donating items entered their name for a chance to win a mini i-Pad. • Discussion re: donation to school from “Kick Off To Summer” barbecue held in June. This event was formerly known as “Canada Day Picnic” and every year several Deloraine School students assist Chamber. They are a huge help and it is appreciated. It was decided Chamber would give $200 to the School. • Another discussion was based on how Chamber might better support businesses as well as how to get more people involved with Chamber. These issues will be talked about further at the January meeting. Reports EDO/Recreation: Liza Park reported that Roger Guy of Community Futures would be applying to the CBC re: documentary about communities with a list of 10 communities, which have a unique story about their town and decline in business and retail. Deloraine is one of the communities on the list. Stay tuned. Delodaze fundraising is ongoing. The Committee hosted a Fish Fry/Christmas Baking Night at the Legion on Friday, December 18. A social is being planned

for the spring and will be held in the Arena. Tourism – Liza reported the Tourism Westman Guide is finalized. It will include a golf course passport. Prairie Skills - Tracey Raikes reports things continue to be busy at Prairie Skills. They are still working out of the former MNP building, as renovations aren’t quite complete at the Prairie Skills building. Tracey reported that Donor’s Choice realized $56,089 for the 2015 campaign. Municipality of Deloraine-Winchester - Councillor Jeff Johnston reported: • Flood Protection meeting was held, with over 30 people attending. The proposed project will cost $580,000 and is cost shared - 90% Federal/Provincial government and 10% local government. • Public Open House regarding Curling Rink/Hall Complex on November 16 was very well attended. In excess of 90% of those in attendance were in favour of going forward. There are 24 junior curlers this year. • Completion of water plant has been pushed back to June. • Whitewater Lake – an environment permit will be applied for in January, followed by application for government funding and so on. Stay tuned. The next meeting will be Thursday, January 7, at 7:00 p.m. at the Legion. Everyone is encouraged to attend for the brainstorming session.

Buying our silence with a Rolling Pin cake, Just won’t cut it but good try, Jake. Tip of the day: Impaired driving laws in Manitoba have changed as of December 1, 2015. If you blow a warning on the roadside screening device, the 24 hour suspensions for alcohol have now increased to 72 hour suspensions and if a youth (anyone under the age of 16) is in the vehicle, the suspension will be issued for 7 days. With the help of the Deloraine Ladies’ Curling Club, we all would like to wish you the very best of the season . . .

Tire Recycle Rural High School Athlete of the Week The Tire Recycle Rural High School Athlete of the Week is Cassidy McCausland of the Deloraine Colts volleyball team. This 5’6” libero led the Colts to a bronze medal finish at the Provincial “A” Girls Volleyball Championship, where she was twice named player of the game. She was selected as a Graduating All-Star and also led her team to gold at the Deloraine tournament, silver at the Hamiota tournament, and bronze at the Boissevain tournament. Coach Jillian Patmore states, “As one of our cocaptains and one of only two Grade 12 students, Cassidy brings maturity and leadership to her young team. Cassidy has had to fill many roles during her volleyball career, beginning as a setter, playing right side, and now as a libero. No matter what challenge she is faced with, Cass rises above and manages to stay positive and calm for her team. Her team looks to her to set the tone, and every time, she sets the bar high and her team rises to it. Without her and the leadership and example she provides, we wouldn’t have had the success we’ve had this season.” This Grade 12 student maintains an 87% average, while also participating in badminton, curling, fast pitch, and track & field.

Each ladies team is responsible for a committee to keep our club running smoothly all season. The men maintain the facility for our club. Dean Laval and Blair Goethals have attended many meetings on our behalf for a proposed hall /rink complex. Doug Morningstar and Noreen Johnston represent our club on a fundraising committee as well. After several curling club meetings, meetings attended by our represen-

tation, and meetings of our own club, a resolution has been passed to have a combined facility. Our members have worked tirelessly since June to fundraise for a proposed combined facility: • Barb Laval’s retirement • Coffee and muffins at the Farmer’s Market • A social at the Doc Bonar Arena featuring the band “Sentinal” • Proceeds from Crusin’ for Cash • Investors comedy tour and money from Investors • Peg and Jim Sanders - proceeds from the Dead and Breakfast • Royals hockey team donated 10% from their auction • Steak fry at the Legion Many people have donated to our fund and if you wish to donate, you will receive a tax receipt. A big thanks to all who worked, donated to, and supported us this summer and fall. Congratulations to Liza Park, Meaghan Astle, Megan Vandenberghe, and Kristy Wells who participated in the Traveller’s Bonspiel and will represent us in March. As well Murray, Terry, Reg Warren and Brian Barker won a spot for the Seniors Provincials at the The Guild Classic. If you would like to rent the lounge, please contact Blair Goethals. The final bonspiel has been The Last Hurrah. This year the bonspiel will be the Very Last Hurrah. We would like to invite all former curlers to participate. Looking forward to a rockin’ good time at he Deloraine Curling Club.
