by Judy Wells Deloraine School Class of 2015 celebrated graduation on Wednesday, June 24. The class included (D indicates graduated with Distinction and H indicates graduated with Honours): Gunner Christensen, Monica Crepeele, Jacquelyn Crowe, (D), Carlee Edwards (D), Madison Edwards (D), Cherith Jacobson, Ashlan Kemp (D), Nial Mills (H), Lara Teetaert (D), Mitchell Vandendorpe, Andrew Vercaigne (H), and Austin Weidenhamer.

The Grand March was held at the school gym prior to the Ceremonies at the Theatre.

Mr. Paul Artz was the emcee. Following the procession of graduates, he invited Superintendent Mrs. Carolyn Cory, to bring greetings from the South West Horizon School Division.

“Congratulations graduates. It’s been said that by the year 2030 employers won’t be looking for workers who know facts as much as those that can problem solve think outside the box. I hope you have learned how to learn, to think critically and how to work with each other.”

Cory concluded with a quote from Martin Luther King - ‘Intelligence plus character is the goal of true education.’

Mr. Artz invited Andrew Vercaigne and Madi Edwards to give the Valedictory Address.

“While reflecting on our class we realized the most important thing is how we help each other - how everyone has something unique to offer. This has made us into the people we are today. We have amazing memories. We’d like to take a moment to thank the teachers for their knowledge, time and talent, and for setting the bar high. And to our parents who helped us with everything, for their time, laughter and even tears. We’ll soon be going on to school or jobs. We hope you follow your passion, stay true to yourself, never follow someone else’s path unless you’re in the woods and you’re lost and see a path, then by all means you should follow it. Believe in all your crazy dreams, as you know there are many people who will help you along the way so that they will become a reality.”

Mr. Artz invited Mr. Franklin to deliver the Principal’s message.

“I’d like to begin with a few thank yous - especially to the businesses and organizations who generously provide scholarships and awards. Over $13,000 will be presented today. On days like this, you think about your own graduation. In life, graduations are the only forward looking ceremonies. I hope your education has inspired you - to do something you love.”

Franklin was inspired by a David McCullough Jr. presentation. In that presentation, McCullough spoke of how we protect and coddle our children and tell them they are special. He says - “You are not special, because if everyone is special, then no one is special.”

Franklin continued, “Do what you do because you love it and believe in its purpose. The most important part of any community is its people. Deloraine’s great because people are willing to give back. You succeed with good people. Surround yourself with good people.

Being a good person does make you special”.

Scholarships The Delores Percival Memorial Scholarship is a $500 award. It is in memory of former Deloraine School staff member, Delores Percival. This award goes to someone going on to a post secondary institution, university or community college, who has demonstrated a strong work ethic and commitment to their studies. Joann Biehl presented this to Monica Crepeele.

The Deloraine Health Auxiliary Scholarship ($400) goes to a student entering a health related field. Donna Tweed presented this award to Monica Crepeele.

The Doric Lodge #36 Bursary ($200) was presented by Elmer Hunter to Ashlan Kemp.

The Catholic Women’s League Scholarship (either one $200 or two $100 scholarships) is awarded to student(s) who contribute behind the scenes, are caring and kind, have a good work ethic and who have contributed to school and community. Myrna Teetaert presented these awards to Andrew Vercaigne and Monica Crepeele.

The Westman Communication Group Scholarship ($500) goes to a deserving student going on to post secondary education. Brenda Parker presented the award to Madison Edwards.

The Sara Corbett Scholarship ($500) is awarded for school involvement, leadership, positive attitude and entering a post secondary program. Joanne Bolduc presented to Jacquie

Crowe.

The Boundary Co-op Scholarship ($1,000) presented by Dwain Teetaert to Lara Teetaert.

The Kowal Auto Bursary ($250) is presented to a student pursuing training in a trade. Donna Moore presented this award to Nial Mills.

The Manitoba Net-Set Scholarships (minimum of $300) goes to a student who has successfully completed a web-based or video conference courses from Grade 10 - 12 and has demonstrated computer and electronic communication skills, recipient Jacquie Crowe.

The Lauder Ladies Group Bursary ($200), recipient Ashlan Kemp.

The Municipality of Brenda-Waskada Award ($250) goes to a Grade 12 student who has demonstrated school and community involvement, recipient Lara Teetaert. She also received a “BridgingBrenda” book.

The Billie Arnold Memorial Award ($300) goes to the top student in 40S World Issues, recipient Ashlan Kemp.

Deloraine Order of the Royal Purple ($100) is given to an achieving Grade 12 student who has demonstrated volunteerism, recipient Andrew Vercaigne.

The D.J. Wright Scholarship ($100) is for a student attending post secondary with the top average in Grade 12 Literary English — Madison Edwards.

The Chown Centennial Scholarship ($1,000) goes

to a graduating student going to the University of Manitoba, recipient Madison Edwards. Madi also received the Hogg Centennial Entrance Scholarship - $1,000.

Sunrise Credit Union Scholarships go to graduating students demonstrating determination and work ethic and who are going on to post secondary. Each student receives $1,500, recipients Ashlan Kemp and Lara Teeteart.

Florence Kirby Award goes to a student in SHSD who is passionate about communicating ideas and opinions via print, recording, cinema, radio, TV and the internet. Glen Kirby presented the award to Carlee Edwards.

The RM of DeloraineWinchester Award ($200) goes to a student who has a consistent academic effort, involvement in school and community and activities in a leadership capacity, recipient Andrew Vercaigne.

The MNP Award ($500) is awarded to a student who has taken a business or accounting course, is involved in extracurricular beyond sports, is attending post secondary in the field of AG or Business, recipient Madison Edwards.

The Deloraine United Church Women Award ($100) goes to a graduating student going on to post secondary with the highest overall marks in Grade 12 Math Pre-Calc., recipient Madison Edwards.

The Liz & Jim Rea Scholarship ($250) goes to a student entering nursing or a related medical field, recipient Monica Crepeele.

Waskada School Graduation

by Judy Wells Eight students graduated from Waskada School on Tuesday, June 23. The ceremonies were held at 7:30 in the gym with Principal Sherry DeRuyck as MC. Following the entrance of the graduates, O’ Canada was sung, accompanied by graduate Katie Meggison.

“As you leave Waskada School you may no longer read Shakespeare or do Trig but the skills you will need are to be resilient creative thinkers. You are a fine group of young adults,” said DeRuyck.

Cindy Cassils brought greetings from the South West Horizon School Division (SWHSD) Board, “On behalf of the SWHSD Board I offer sincere congratulations to the graduates. I’d also like to acknowledge the teachers - it’s the great staff here at Waskada School who keeps this small school going.”

Carolyn Cory, SWHSD Superintendent congratulated the graduates on reaching this milestone. “But your education is far from over. Research shows that by the year 2030 knowing will not be as important as other skills.

These include: the ability to work with others, sticking to problems until they are solved, and not to be afraid to fail forward, just like the real world. It’s okay to fail, just learn from it and keep going forward. I hope you find your low - a place where you feel completely self-motivated. Be respectful of all and take care of those closest to you.

Ken Voth presented several awards on behalf of the Waskada Lions Club: E.L.A. 40S - Wes Meggison; Biology 40S - Tara Meggison; Physics 40S - Tara Meggison; Psychology 40S - Jade Lefebvre.

Dayna McFarlane presented the Yearbook Editor Award to Hillary Bennie.

Vivianne McKinney presented the Waskada Community Foods Grade 9 Proficiency Award to Josie Meggison.

The Legion Men’s Grade 10 Proficiency Award was presented by Rick Louttit to Cassidy Decorte. Rick also presented the Legion Men’s Poppy Fund Award to Wes Meggison.

Cathy Bambridge presented the Legion Ladies Auxiliary Award to Nicholas Gardner.

Jan McClelland presented on behalf of the Sunrise Credit Union to Jade Lefebvre. “We’re building a brighter future together at Sunrise. We are very excited to announce the new location with large space in Brandon will soon be open.”

Carter McKinney was the recipient of Boundary Co-op Scholarship Award, presented by George Bell.

Wes Meggison received the Manitoba NetSet Scholarship, presented by Sherry DeRuyck.

Paul Vanbeselaere presented the ARC Resources Limited Award to Nicholas Gardiner.

Kaitlin Millard Emmerson presented the Debbie Millard Memorial Award to Lane Janz. “Mom was a real community person. She really cared. This award is in memory of her.”

The Jeff Cannon Memorial Award was presented by Dianne Woodworth to Lane Janz. Dianne read a few thoughts from a letter Jeff had written to his children: “Always stand up for what you believe in but be respectful of the beliefs of others. Nothing in life is certain, we never know what the next chapter will be or how the book will finish. Just try to learn from the experiences of others. Enjoy the innocence of youth no matter how old you get and listen to the council of your elders as they have much to teach you. I wanted to say to you if you get knocked down just get back up. I wanted to say to you there’s never been a fighter yet that has won every round. I wanted to say to you to be kind to others and help those less fortunate than yourself. I wanted to tell you all these things and more but I didn’t know how to say them.”

Deb Calverley presented the MNP scholarship to Carter McKinney.

Edward and Lorna Spence presented the memorial scholarship, in honour of Dawson Pentecost, Gage, Logan and Darren Spence, to Carter McKinney.

The Municipality of Brenda-Waskada Award (for a trade) was presented to Nicholas Gardiner by Head of Council Gary Williams. He also presented the Municipality of Brenda-Waskada Award (for a student who lives in RM and displays community involvement) to Katie Meggison.

The Portage Mutual Agent’s Association Bursary was presented to Jade Lefebrvre, by Gary Williams. Jade also received the Prairie Vision Arts Scholarship, presented by Dave Heilmann.

Cathy Bambridge presented the Evan/Reid Bambridge Scholarship to Katie Meggison. Other scholarships Katie received earlier included: Red River Association Farm Family Scholarship and she and cousin, Wes Meggison, received a University of Manitoba Entrance Scholarship.

The U of M Chown scholarship was awarded to Wes Meggison, presented by Sherry DeRuyck. She also presented certificates of congratulations to all the graduates from MLA of Arthur-Virden Doyle Piwniuk, as well as certificates of congratulations from MP for Brandon-Souris, Larry Maguire.

The Sankey Scholarships were presented: Grade 11 - Tara Meggison; Grade 12 - Wes Meggison.

Carolyn Cory presented the Southwest Horizon General Proficiency Scholarship to Wes Meggison and Sherry DeRuyck presented Wes Meggison with the Governor General Medal.

The presentation of diplomas was carried out by Carolyn Cory, Sherry De Ruyck and Cindy Cassils. The graduates: Nicholas Gardiner, Lane Janz, Jade Lefebvre - with Distinction, Courtney May - with Honours Carter McKinney - with Distinction, Katie Meggison - with Distinction, Wes Meggison - with Distinction, and Sara Turnbull - with Honours.

Grade 12 Honour Roll certificates were presented to Jade Lefebvre, Carter McKinney, Katie Meggison, and Wes Meggison.

April Gibson was the guest singer. She has been studying piano and voice for several years. She delivered an incredibly meaningful and moving song which she composed herself.

Carter McKinney and Lane Janz gave the Valedictory address. They thanked their teachers, coaches, parents, and fellow classmates for everything through the years.

“The main reason we’re going to miss school is because of the friendships we’ve made with each other — these six other people sitting there are the greatest bunch, a force to be reckoned with. Our class has great work ethic, they are smart, talented, and will surely succeed. We are happy for all the time we’ve spent together. We hope we will not lose touch and we wish you all the best. We love you, guys.”

A graduate slide show was presented, showing the graduates through Kindergarten to Grade 12, followed by the Grand March.

Odds & Ends The annual Deloraine Fair is coming up on July 17 and 18. New for this year is a bull riding event on Friday night. Also, the Deloraine Royelles ball team are hosting a fast-pitch tournament.

• • • The Deloraine and Waskada High School Graduations were held last week. Check out this issue for articles and pictures. Congratulations to all the graduates and best of luck in all your future endeavours.

• • • Wasn’t the sky eerie looking this week from the smoke coming from the Saskatchewan fires?

Everything looked sort of orange-coloured.

Hopefully the areas affected by fires receive some rain soon and that all the firefighters remain safe.

• • • The Deloraine Royals senior ball team are on a roll. According to Jake Weidenhamer’s report, the team has won their last four games. There are two home games next week. Monday, July 6, the Royals play host to the Boissevain Centennials and on Tuesday, July 7 the Wawanesa Brewers are in town to take on the Royals. Let’s support our home town team. It’s great baseball and the diamonds look great. How about the flags around the diamond? I think they add a really nice flair.

• • • Deloraine Chamber hosted a “Kick Off to Summer” barbecue on Friday, June 26. This event was formerly called the “Canada Day Picnic.”

Chamber members received help from four school students who were extremely capable and efficient. You girls are great role models for the younger students. Way to go!

• • • The annual Fly-In at the Deloraine Municipal Airport on Sunday, June 28, was very well attended. There were some extras this year including aircraft (helicopters and airplanes) from the training base in Southport (Portage) Canadian Helicopters Limited; and a plane from the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum Inc. Many people went for rides and enjoyed the skies. The delicious breakfast was enjoyed by many as well. What a great day!

Open Farm Day, now in its sixth year, is taking place on Sunday, September 20.

Last year, over 8,000 people visited 47 host farms across the province to learn more about producers, their farms and their products. This is a great opportunity for Manitobans to meet local farmers and learn more about Manitoba’s agricultural industry. It’s also a great opportunity for farmers to connect with potential customers.

by Jake Weidenhamer The Deloraine Royals kicked off week six of the SWBL with a Friday night meeting with the Hartney Hoppers.

Starting for the Royals was Jeff Edwards, countered by Troy Morrison from the Hoppers.

Edwards went four innings allowing six runs on four hits and the Hoppers started off the game with two runs in the first inning and four runs in the second inning. The Royals answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the first and two more in the bottom of the second.

Although the Royals threatened to score, things stayed deadlocked at 6-5 for the Hoppers until the the Royals last bat in the bottom of the seventh.

Hartney brought in Mark Derlago to close the game but he failed to do so. Randy Loucks started off the inning with a double to rightfield. The Hoppers tried to intentionally walk Mitch Olson and in doing so Derlago threw a wild pitch causing the game tying run to score.

The Royals finished the job in the ninth inning when Cole Olson drove in the game winning run, capping a string of four singles.

Mitch Olson got the win for the Royals, allowing just one hit in five innings of relief while striking out four. Finn Druwe took the loss for the Hoppers.

Offensively the Royals had six players with two hits, and had 13 hits as a team while holding Hartney to just five hits in nine innings.

Final score 7-6 Royals and the Royals move to 6-0 at home.

On Sunday, June 28, the Royals headed to Souris to take on the C a r d i n a l s .

Unfortunately, the game summary was not available at the time of this article but we do know that the Royals defeated the Cardinals by a score of 6-5. Randy Loucks earned the win pitching for the Royals and David Hodgson picked up the save. Mitch Olson hit his first home run of the season. With four games to play, the Royals have a record of eight wins and four losses and find

themselves right in the mix at the top of the league.

The next Royal’s home game is Monday,

OBITUARY ROMMELAERE Henriette Augusta (Huys) Rommelaere Peacefully and surrounded by family, Henriette (Huys) Rommelaere passed away on June 16, 2015 at the Boissevain Palliative Care Unit.

She was predeceased by her husband Albert, her parents Henry and Sidonie Huys and her 3 sisters Mary, Margaret and Angela.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Sharon (Ed), Lorne (Ethel), Valerie (Mark), Kareen (Ralph), Jason (Roxy); her grandchildren Amber, Rennen, Marcia, Erin, Nolan, Rylan, Journey, Riley and Shelby; and her great-grandchildren Lennon and Keiman.

Henriette was born December 27, 1925 on 16-2-23 Winchester and raised in the Goodlands/Deloraine area. After completing her schooling at Grove School and at St Michaelʼs Academy in Brandon she worked in the Glen North Law Office in Deloraine until her marriage to Albert in November 1945. They took over the family farm until their retirement in 1978.

Harriet, as she was best known, embraced farm life with all of her being and so was a tremendous support to Albert. She was a loving, nurturing mother to her children.

Her absolute favourite place was “home” surrounded by family and/or friends. There was always a place at her table for anyone who dropped in and she continued to host large family dinners until she moved to her apartment last November. She was especially fond of making lunch for the grandchildren on their school lunch break.

During retirement in Deloraine, Harriet kept her busy hands occupied with ceramics, quilting, community band, caring for family and neighbours, cards (especially Bien) and of course, still ʻfarmingʼ in her huge garden. She was now officially promoted to “inspector” of the family farm operations and made regular drive by visits to monitor the seasonal work schedule and so kept “the boys” on their toes.

As per her wishes cremation has taken place with a private graveside service for the family at the Del Win Cemetery; all arranged by Smith Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Boissevain Palliative Care Unit.

GIVING BACK - Sunrise Credit Union, Waskada Branch, were grateful to Waskada School for attending their barbecue on June 4. Sunrise is covering the cost of all supplies for the day. There was an excellent turnout and they are happy to donate that total money raised that day to the Waskada School for its beautification project. The total amount was $1,254. Kindergarten graduation celebrated at Deloraine School

by Judy Wells The Kindergarten class of 2014-15 graduated into Grade 1 on June 25. The class includes Avery Aitchison, Bristol Andries, Emry Cassan, Kailyn Corkish, Addison Crepeele, Callie Ginter, Logan Kasprick, Piper Lee, Kelsey McGee, Teagan McNarland, Cedric Maddess, Tracin Paramor, Evan Raes, Ivy Raes, Jordyn Schultz, Brody Smart, Armaan Thind, Danielle Van der Westhuizen, Tristan Vanmackelberg, and Lane Vanrobaeys.

The graduation was held in the gym with many family and friends in attendance. This class had two teachers this year, Mrs. Allie Wells for the first half and Mrs. Julie Maynard for the second half.

Mrs. Maynard gave words of welcome. She congratulated all the children for a great year.

The class sang two songs, under the leadership of Mrs. Donna McGregor, “Going to our Graduation” and “Herman the Worm”.

A funny play “Aaron’s Hair” was performed by the class, with the help of Mrs. Maynard. Aaron’s hair had quite the travels.

A slide show of the year’s activities, prepared

by Mrs. Maynard, was presented.

Mrs. McGregor had interviewed the class ear lier in the year, asking them what they wanted to be when they grew up and a few other questions.

This was presented in a slide show and was delightful.

The class were presented their graduation cer tificates. Mrs. Maynard wished them all well and invited everyone to enjoy cake and refreshments.

Munchkin minutes submitted by Wee ‘R’ Daycare The month of June has been a great one weather wise and we have been able to spend almost every day outside. The children are loving the sandbox after the long winter and wet spring. Digging holes to bury their feet and making sand castles are two of their favourite pastimes in the sand box. The children have also been watching the garden grow in anticipation of eating the yummy vegetables. They help water them and pick the weeds, as well.

The month of June also means some of our kids had their pre-kindergarten grad and they are getting really excited to be going to big kid school.

We had some great volunteers come on a weekend and laid some more pea gravel around our climbers. They also brought us some tree stumps in different lengths for the children to climb on and sit on and after the rain, they enjoy moving them to check for worms. Another great parent built us some new shelves and installed them for us to use for storage. We are already putting them to good use.

This month also brought us Father’s Day where we again talked about all the great things our Dads do for us and all the fun things we do with Dad and what our Dads do for work. This year we made go cups for our busy Dads.

We really appreciated all the donations of sippy cups we got after last month’s Munchkin Minutes.

We are looking to expanding a couple of areas in our outdoor space this summer as we spend a lot of time out there. We were wondering if anyone had any old pots and pans that we could use to build an outdoor music area. Another item is an older canoe that is not being used anymore. We would love to put it to use as a dramatic play area for a large motor area for the children to climb in and out of.

One more thing we enjoyed in the month of June was the Chamber of Commerce “Kick Off to Summer” picnic in the Park. We like when the community thinks of us when they hold these events and invite us to join them. We had a very yummy lunch, visit with the Policeman and sang songs to the residents of the PCH and Lodge.

Munchkin Minutes will be done for the summer. We look forward to updating you all again in September once school has begun.

ATTENTION DOG OWNERS Friendly reminder to the residents in the community of Deloraine limits as well as the resort area to please take care and control of their dogs.

The Municipality will be monitoring both areas and if the Animal Control Officer is called upon for enforcement, the dog owner will be responsible for any and all expenses incurred.

Each and every dog that resides in these areas are required by by-law to be registered each year. If you have not done so, please come into the Municipal office @ 129 Broadway St. N. to register your pet.
