Area woman competes in Hawaii’s Ironman

t is the Super Bowl of triathlons, and local resident Amy (Christopherson) Fuhrmann can now say she has participated in it—the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. Fuhrmann qualified for the World Championship with her secondplace finish in the 35-39 age division for females in last year’s Madison triathlon. It was her first Ironman event.

In early October of this year, Fuhrmann headed to Hawaii a week ahead of the Oct. 12 World Championship to continue her preparations for the event. Fuhrmann said she kept her goals fairly modest— first, she just wanted to finish; second,

she wanted her time to be somewhat close to what it was in Madison the previous year and was hoping to finish in the top 25 among the 88 or so participants in her age/gender division.

It was a successful experience on all those points and more for Fuhrmann. She wound up finishing 19th in her division with a time of 10 hours, 45 minutes. Over 600 women started the event and Fuhrmann placed 117th among them. “Overall, I’m really happy,” she said as she recently recounted the experience. Her time was within eight minutes of what she had done in Madison, and her swim time was faster than Madison and faster than

the top U.S. woman who competes as a professional. “I enjoyed the day,” she said.

A standout swimmer at Kiel High School and later at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, it might not come as a surprise that she excelled in the 2.4-mile swim in Kailua-Kona Bay. But this experience was new to Fuhrmann as she had never competed in an ocean swim before. On top of that, the surf conditions were reported to be the worst they had been in 10 years. While some competitors actually got sea sick, Fuhrmann said she was not affected by the swim conditions on the day of the race and had only felt it a bit during her practice swims the week before the event.

STRONG WOMEN | Iron man strong There is another challenge about swimming in the ocean versus her usual practice swims in Elkhart Lake— she later found out that officials were monitoring the bay for two Tiger sharks which had been spotted. “I did not see any sharks while I was swimming,” Fuhrmann said, adding, “I was happier I didn’t know.” Fuhrmann also said she prefers competing in colder water but that the Hawaiian bay was warm enough to not need a wet suit. As for the running and biking portions of the Ironman, Fuhrmann said the humid 85 F conditions can be draining. “I don’t know if it’s ever not humid there,” she said. In addition, the bike portion across lava desert can be windy—especially on the return leg— but it was not as windy this year as it sometimes can get. Not surprisingly, Fuhrmann said competing in the Ironman World Championship was a whole new level

STRONG WOMEN | Iron man strong for her. “You kind of felt like a celebrity,” she said. “It’s like you’re on the red carpet of Ironman.” A parade of nations is held on Tuesday before the race. The U.S. has the most competitors with over 600, followed by Germany with more than 200. The event was live streamed and portions were nationally televised later. Announcers keep the many spectators informed on what is happening and who is passing by certain spots, and at one intersection Fuhrmann said it was neat to hear “New Holstein, Wisconsin” announced as she passed. Fuhrmann had a lot of support along with her at the World Championship, including husband Mike and their children Ava, 10, and Isaac, 9. Ava took part in a swim to run event while in Hawaii. Also in their group of 14 people who stayed together in a rented home for the week were her parents, her brother with his wife and baby, a sister, and a friend with her children. Fuhrmann said her family and friends did some tourist things in the week leading up to the race while she was continuing her training, but she and her family stayed an extra week after the race to enjoy more of Hawaii. “Even just driving you’re in awe,” she said of the scenery. She said she felt better after this race than she did last year in Madison. She attributes that to hydrating better and also having her friend/massage therapist along on the trip.

Fuhrmann said she preferred staying in the house—complete with a pool and hot tub—as she does not like all the “hustle” in and around

the hotels located close to the event. She said she is very competitive and gets a little nervous when she competes—but she views that as a good thing. “Being

nervous keeps you in check with what you have to do,” she said. Fuhrmann said she is still contemplating what comes next in her athletic career.

She said she sometimes wonders, “Why am I putting all this time into it? It’s hard.” That said, she indicates she likely will do another Ironman and maybe some half Ironmans. “I’m not exactly sure,” she said. Fuhrmann finished ahead of some professionals in the Madison event but— asked if she would ever consider turning pro—she also hesitated. She said she knows some athletes who went pro in triathlons and then got back out because they said it took the fun out of it. Asked if she would consider competing again in Hawaii, Fuhrmann said, “Yeah, I think I would. It inspires so many people. I’m amazed by that. It’s pretty cool to hear my swimmers

We want to provide our patrons with fresh, local, healthy and tasty American comfort food.” Krystle Augsburger is the new chef at The Lake House, and she brings great experience from both the

Sheboygan Yacht Club and Osthoff Resort. “She loves to come up with new and fresh ideas that will continue to separate us from the rest of the pack,” Conway said. “She has great vision.” The chef’s ingenuity has pointed to recent specialties like margarita tacos and tequila shrimp nachos, both crowd pleasers since their introduction. “We don’t like to think of ourselves in a particular lane of food options. We might have salads and burgers, but they will have a high end feel. We like to call it casually gourmet,” he said. A wide selection of appetizers is available year around, with the list including items like jumbo Bavarian pretzels, Henning’s beer battered cheese curds, home made sliders, Shrimp de Johnge. The Lake House’s salad and sandwich section includes standards like double brats or double Chicago hot dogs, but veers into other tasty options like fish tacos, Italian paninis. “We also have a truly amazing Cuban panini on the menu,” Conway notes. “What makes the menu special is that so many of our items are made fresh on site, from cole slaw, to pico de gallo to fish tacos,” he said. An aggressive burger menu includes bold burger choices for big appetites, all with a flaire for the creative. When it comes to the dinner menu, Conway said The Lake House will feature local steaks. But patrons can also order gems like the shrimp diablo pasta, with a

Originally from Kiel, she currently works as a nurse, but she knows so many of the staff and families that they come from. Great cocktail options abound at The Lake House. One of the hot specialties out of the gate has been the blueberry-infused whiskey old fashioned. Turning the tables on one of Wisconsin’s great supper club traditions, The Lake House takes old fashioneds into a new zone. “The whiskey sits in the blueberries for hours, and it serves as the basis for our old fashioned. They are simply delicious,” even if

Happy Hour unwinds at The Lake House from 3-6 p.m. on those days. The Lake House also plans to enhance the customer experience with a full slate of musical performers.

Fett retires from Delta sales post Delta Media Group has announced the retirement of account executive Dianne Fett. Fett, who worked as a sales representative for Delta Publications/Delta Media Group for the past 10 years, served customers mainly in the communities of Chilton, Stockbridge, Hilbert, and portions of Calumet and Manitowoc Counties. During her 10 years with Delta, Dianne has worked on every edition of this magazine throughout its publishing history, both in sales and in offering ideas for content for Verve. “I truly loved my job,” Fett said. “It was great to get to know so many of my customers. I will miss those relationships that were built up over the years.” Fett, who has been active in community theater groups, doesn’t plan to sit still in retirement. “I have a lot of projects that I want to get done. Ombudsman volunteers being sought The State of Wisconsin Board on Aging and Long Term Care is recruiting qualified applicants to become trained advocates for residents served by the Volunteer Ombudsman Program. Volunteer ombudsmen make unannounced weekly visits to an assigned local nursing home between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., providing a valuable opportunity for residents to share concerns, offer ideas, and talk with

someone independent of the facility. The Volunteer Ombudsman Program promotes residents’ rights, and volunteer ombudsmen are a voice for residents who do not have family or visitors. The residents look forward to the weekly visits with their volunteer ombudsman and get great satisfaction from their weekly visits to the facility. “They receive more than they give” just by making weekly visits and

Recipes, Recollections & Reminiscings from Marge By Marge Petts Spring – a refreshing rain shower, a bright sunny day, the first flowers in your garden. A season of new beginnings, not only outdoors but also in our lives. It may be a friendship we feel a need to renew, or begin again to nurture the relationship we have, maybe a new career path or just to rethink the life and lifework we now have – what better time to make changes. I remember years ago, admiring people who had a business of their own. I always thought these people were able to start a business because they were smarter or more educated or just had opportunities other people didn’t have, until one day I realized that those things were probably not the case. The main attribute they possessed was the lack of fear of failing or not being afraid to “take a chance”. I see those attributes in my granddaughter Christine. Although she isn’t aspiring to have her own business, she is moving herself in the right direction to continue to be successful. She has lived on her own and supported herself for the last three years, while continuing her education, and working in her

Spring Birdseed Wreath An easy to make birdseed wreath. Sprinkle dried fruit in the pan before layering with the seed mixture. Makes (1) 8- inch wreath 1 packet unflavored gelatin (Knox Gelatin) ½ cup warm water 3/4 cup flour 3 tablespoons light corn syrup 4 cups birdseed mix ½ cup dried red fruit such as dried cherries or cranberries

In a large bowl, mix gelatin and water. Add flour and corn syrup. Stir with rubber spatula to form a thick paste. Add birdseed

and mix to coat all seeds. Coat top and side of a 12 cup Bundt pan, fluted tube pan or round aluminum Jello mold with hole in center. Distribute dried fruit on bottom of pan. Press seed mixture firmly into pan. Place pan in cool area. Let dry for 24 hours. Carefully flip pan and remove wreath. Tie ribbon on top of wreath. Hang on a tree branch for birds to enjoy.

chosen field. She is just a handful of women working in the field she is pursuing, and the only female at the company she works for in this field. She could stop at this point, graduate in Spring, relinquish the stress of working and going to school but instead she recently made the decision to continue and get a more advanced degree, which will take another one and a half years. She is one of the fortunate people who knew what she wanted to do and went after it. We never stop learning and growing. Every person has some ability or skill, even if they think they don’t. Many people are using those skills to make a living and many others haven’t tapped the potential they have penned up inside. Take the path of most resistance. Another one of my granddaughters is gifted. She has exceptional artistic skills. She is in accelerated classes in high school. I told her that whatever she decided to do was fine, as long as she didn’t waste the gifts she was given at birth. I write this column, because I love to write, but I didn’t realize until I was older that this was what I was meant to do. Easy Petit Fours Makes about thirty-five 2-inch squares

Bake white cake mix in a jelly roll pan, 15-1/2”x101/2”x1”, as directed on package. Cool. Cut cake into small squares, rounds, diamonds, hearts or other shapes. Place cake pieces upside down, a few at a time, on wire rack over large bowl. Pour Petit Fours Icing (see recipe at right) over top so entire cake piece is covered at one time. Icing that drips off cake into bowl can be reheated and used again. Decorate tops of cakes with silver dragees or decorators icing. For decorating, mix 2 cups confectioners’ sugar and enough hot water for consistency to be used in decorators’ tube. Tint with a few drops of food color.

Southern Fried Chicken Makes 4 servings

Petit Fours icing 9 cups confectioners’ sugar (about 2 pounds) ½ cup water ½ cup light corn syrup 1 teaspoon vanilla ½ teaspoon almond extract

In top of double boiler, mix all ingredients. Heat over boiling water just to lukewarm. Remove from heat. Leave icing over hot water to keep it thin. Tint with food color if you wish. If necessary, add hot water, a few drops at a time, until of spreading consistency.

Truly Southern Fried Chicken is served with Creamy Gravy 2-1/2 to 3 lb. broilerfryer chicken, cut up 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup flour ½ teaspoon paprika ¼ teaspoon pepper Salad oil Wash chicken and pat dry. Mix flour, paprika and pepper. Heat oil (1/4 inch) in large skillet. Coat chicken with flour mixture. Cook chicken in oil over medium heat 15 to 20 minutes. Reduce heat; cover tightly and simmer 30 to 40 minutes or until thickest pieces are tender. If skillet cannot be tightly covered, add 1 to 2 tablespoons water. Turn chicken to assure even cooking. Remove cover for last 5 minutes to crisp chicken.

Creamy Gravy 1-1/2 cups

Place chicken on warm platter. Pour fat from pan into bowl, leaving brown particles in pan. Return 3 tablespoons fat to pan. Blend in 3 tablespoons flour. Cook over low heat, stirring until mixture is smooth and bubbly. Remove from heat. Stir in ¾ cup milk and ¾ cup water. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil and stir 1 minute. Add a few drops bottled brown bouquet sauce. Season with salt and pepper.

Corned Beef-Potato Salad Makes 4 to 6 servings 4 cups cubed cooked potatoes 12 ounce can corned beef, cubed ½ cup diced dill pickle ½ cup chopped celery ¼ cup salad oil 2 tablespoons wine vinegar ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon garlic powder ¼ teaspoon freshly ground pepper 2/3 cup sour cream 2 tablespoons horseradish Crisp greens Cherry tomatoes

Midwest Cooler

In a large bowl, toss potatoes, meat, pickles, celery and onion. In covered jar, shake oil, vinegar, salt, garlic powder and pepper. Pour over potatoes and meat mixture and toss. Cover. Refrigerate at least 2 hours. Just before serving, mix sour cream and horseradish. Pour over meat mixture and toss. Season to taste.

Serves 8 to 10 7 cups water 2 cups sugar 2 cups prepared tea 12 -ounce can frozen lemonade 6- ounce can frozen orange juice 1-1/2 cups gin or vodka 1 liter 7-up

Combine water and sugar in large pan. Bring to boil, remove from stove and allow to cool. Add all remaining ingredients to sugar water and freeze. When ready to serve, scoop into individual glasses and add 7-up to taste. Top off with a fresh mint sprig (optional).

Understanding stress

tress! Ahh! Last weekend was a bit crazy. Then again, aren’t they all? Friday was a busy day at work as we were a bit short-handed at Giebler Chiropractic. Yep, Stephanie and I made it through the day and managed to be smiling as we left the office that night. Saturday morning brought more wet heavy snow to shovel before leaving for basketball in Manitowoc. The team earned a hard-fought victory over Roncali, and I was proud of their effort, for sure. But it did manage to raise Coach Nic’s blood pressure substantially. Fast forward a couple hours, and I was behind the wheel of the family truck as the four of us began our journey to Colorado for a ski trip. Thankfully, by then the roads were agreeable and there was a bit less stress and white knuckling the steering wheel than compared to the morning. But that lack of stress didn’t last long… As we were in Iowa City, Iowa, looking to change the diaper of our three-year-old Emerin, it came to my attention that I had left her suitcase in her room, along with her Blankey’s, her stuffed animals, all of her clothes...and her diapers. This resulted in an impromptu 10:30 PM visit to Target, and an expensive one at that. Next, let’s throw in a couple other types of stress… Like an all-nighter behind the wheel, and not exactly a Dr. Nic recommended dietary plan, which consisted of a metric ton of caffeine and several bags of ruffles potato chips. Thankfully, we did make it out to Colorado to our rental in Fraser. Friends had arrived earlier on Saturday and we

swapped some travel stories. All I wanted at this point was SLEEP, but leave it to my great friend Damian to suggest we hike up Berthoud Pass, and then ski down. It’s only about a mile long hike. In ski boots. With an elevation gain of about 1,000 feet. Not exactly working with a full deck at this point...there I was with Damian and 4 other friends at the top of Berthoud Pass. While the weekend was a doozy and included all forms of stress—chemical, physical, hormonal, emotional—it still was a heck of a way to end the weekend. Thanks for the push, Damian. In this day and age, when it seems as though everyone has more to do in less time, it’s no surprise that stress management is a growing field of study and a popular self-help topic. Over the years, science has learned a lot about our relationship with stress—its effects on our performance, how it can impact our health and well-being and why some people are better at managing than others. For us to manage stress more effectively as individuals, it’s useful to understand a little bit about what researchers and clinicians have learned.

A Matter of Evolution

The stress response evolved in order to prepare the body for fight or flight in the presence of real physical threats such as a lion or an enemy from another tribe. Even though we may be surrounded by 21st century technology, human physiology is still based on what we needed as hunter-gatherers. The stress response is designed to be a short-term reaction to immediate danger that is then followed by relief and relaxation after that immediate danger has passed. In response to serious

threat, the body will release chemicals such as adrenaline (epinephrine) and cortisol, which divert blood away from non-critical organs in the body such as the digestive system and send it to the muscles. The heart rate also goes up in readiness for intense activity, respiration quickens and the senses become heightened.

The everyday stresses of modern life are difficult to escape. But if we can train our minds to view them as a challenge rather than a threat, it could actually help to bring about better performance and better health. In other words, stress could actually help make us better versions of ourselves. So eliminating all stress from our lives is probably not a good idea.

The Wrong Physiological Response for Today’s Lifestyle Problems

Stress Management in Action

As a short-term response, stress has few lasting physiological effects and stress chemicals break down quickly in the body once the stressor is no longer there. However, most physical threats in our modern world are imagined rather than real. And our modern-day fears and anxieties can lurk beneath the surface for weeks or months. So there’s a mismatch—the kind of physiological responses helpful for fighting a lion are not so useful in helping us cope with our modern causes of stress. But it gets worse. It turns out that our bodies’ response to stressful situations (designed to help us cope with shortterm, fight-or-flight situations) can even have a detrimental impact on the body when it’s switched on over prolonged periods. Digestive disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), high blood pressure, low immunity and even chronic illness such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) are just some examples of illnesses that can be brought on by long-term stress. In addition, researchers have also discovered that stress can worsen many preexisting medical conditions and can lead to changes in the brain. These changes tend to make chronically stressed people more impatient and aggressive. This can further reduce their ability to cope with problems.

The Mind-Body Connection

While we are still running on what may be considered outdated stress technology in our bodies, we certainly do not have to be controlled by it. Fortunately for us, the fight or flight response triggered by our sympathetic nervous system is not the only mode our bodies can operate in. We can also learn to trigger the parasympathetic “rest or digest” mode, which allows the body to rest and reverse the physiological changes brought about by stress. Making sure you have enough time to unwind is critical to combating the effects of stress throughout the day, week and month. So is eating well and exercising. And learning a relaxation technique such as meditation can also help. Yoga is a particularly good “stress buster” as it combines gentle exercise with meditative breathing and relaxation. Counseling and anger management can also be appropriate during periods of intense difficulty to ensure that stress doesn’t get the better of you and your body. I work daily with people to develop healthy lifestyle habits—especially around nutrition, exercise, sleep and stress management—that help prevent illness and injury. Felician Village Felician Village is a senior living community located on the south side of Manitowoc at 1635 S. 21st St. The organization was started in 1887 by the Felician Sisters as a home for widows and orphans. Today this 23-acre campus includes living and services for seniors in various life stages—independent, assisted living (two forms), nursing home, and a rehab facility. Also, a vast array of services and education is available in our Dementia Center of Excellence for those needing memory care and for their families. Barb Fricke, director of marketing, has a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration and a Master of Science Degree in Organizational Behavior. “I worked 30 years at a

local health care facility, the last 10 as the director of marketing,” Fricke said. “I came to Felician Village 11 years ago as the manager of assisted living, moving into the director of marketing role in 2014. As marketing director, I am responsible for the overall communication message about who is Felician Village to the public, prospective residents, residents, and families. This includes website, advertising, social media, and internal communications.” Asked about her vision of the future at Felician Village, Fricke said, “As the needs and desires of those

Going on vacation with my grown children and their families and introducing my grandchildren to national parks is something we all enjoy. I also spend time with my 85-year-old dad who is living in his own home yet. In addition, I enjoy reading, camping, hiking, playing cards, and spending time with my siblings.” See our ad on page 34

Fox’s Piggly Wiggly Peggy Jeske’s career in the grocery business dates back 1971 at the Red Owl Store Manitowoc. I worked there until 1988 when the chain closed, then came to Larry’s Piggly Wiggly in 1989. When Bob and Kris Fox purchased January 2011, all the employees were able to continue with the company, and Jeske remained on staff. She currently serves as Store Director/HR coordinator for three Fox Piggly Wiggly stores. (Manitowoc, Two Rivers and Plymouth). “I have worked in all departments, checking, meat, produce, deli, bakery. I started and ran a postal station, video and liquor. Over the years I also saw a lot of changes and it was fun to be a part of running those departments. I worked in the front office, bookkeeping, as well

All the proceeds are donated to non-profit organizations. Jeske said customers often comment that they feel we are a family and they feel part of it. “Most of us have been together for many years and when you have that kind of relationship with employees it carries over to our customers. They come back because we recognize them and they are treated like family,” she said. Jeske takes great pride in her work and enjoys her job. ”I love the people I interact with on a daily basis and being in the business as long as I have been, you tend to make many lifelong friends. I am happiest when I am with my family. They are my pride and joy. Peggy has been married to Jeff for 43 years. They actually met at the old Red Owl store. The Jeskes have 2 Children,

We offer a variety of classes, private instruction, full-service gun shop and indoor shooting range.” As a managing member, owner of T&L Tactical, Fettig said her business was really born out of necessity. “The firearm industry is a male dominated industry. Being a female who loves the shooting sports, it was difficult going to stores and making a purchase. Often times, male clerks were more interested in selling my husband a gun than myself. Salespeople didn’t take me seriously, didn’t listen nor provided the expertise I was looking for. When I talked to my friends, they all said the same thing,” she said. “So that’s when I decided to move forward with opening. I haven’t looked back since. We continue to grow, adding a range and a much bigger location in 2018. I have been able to really hire a great team

of staff as well! It was important that I not only had employees that loved to shoot but really like helping people. I really want people to notice a difference when they come into the shop. We want everyone to feel welcomed regardless of their shooting experience. Rachel my store manager and myself have gone on to become NRA certified instructors. We teach a wide variety of classes that are booked several months in advance. All our staff are certified Range Safety Officers, CPR certified and Stop the Bleed Certified. Fettig added, “We want all our customers to feel safe while on the range.” Fettig said T&L Tactical looks forward to expanding its classes, offerings on the range and product lines based on customer feedback. “We want to stay relevant and will continue to look at new products to ensure we stay on the cutting edge,” she added. Pizza leads a growing menu at Dizzy’s Pub

izzy’s Pub in Valders has evolved into a great place for food and beverage in its first 18 months. The path has been filled with challenges, but owners Dale and Mel Folz will be the

Among the many challenges they faced was an electrical fire in their kitchen. Faced with the need to gut their whole kitchen, the Folz’s dug in their heels and found ways to adapt and innovate. The result was a silver lining that honed and perfected their pizza offerings. “We were able to get a makeshift pizza kitchen up and running which has really surprised us with the great response to our pizzas,” Dale said. “It was maybe a blessing in disguise to go through this.” The experience of recreating and regenerating new ideas has been a hallmark of the owners and their staff. “We are having a lot of fun developing our menus as well as bettering the guest experience.”

Bay Beach, Baby!  by Darlene Buechel

s a kid growing up in the 1960s and ‘70s, no summer was complete without a trip to Bay Beach. Green Bay was less than an hour away from our Hilbert home, so several times a summer we would hop in the station wagon and set out for a funfilled day at the amusement park. Of course, planning and dreaming of Bay Beach was half the fun. The day before the trip Dad would gas up the station wagon and check the oil while the rest of us planned the picnic lunch. Ground bologna sandwiches and potato chips were usually standard fare, as well as Orange Crush soda and a Diet Tab for Mom. Mom and Dad sent us to bed early the night before, but who could sleep knowing action and adventure was just around the corner? My brother Dennis would dream of the crashing and smashing of Bumper Cars, while sister Diane and I plotted what to do first—the Helicopter, Ferris Wheel, or Scrambler. The next morning we’d be dressed in a flash and slurp down our Captain Crunch in record time before starting the chorus of “Is it time yet?” Finally Mom and Dad would load the cooler and tell us to pile into the back seat. I was the middle child who never had to sit in the middle since I got easily car sick and needed to hang my head out the window like a Saint Bernard. Dennis and Diane would have a short spat about who got “stuck” in the middle, but soon enough we’d be on the road and the chorus of, “Are we there yet?” would begin.

Dad would stand in the ticket line while the rest of us headed to the bathrooms. Bay Beach has always been affordable fun. Back then tickets were 10 cents each and our eyes always bugged out when Dad returned with a stream of golden tickets longer than we were. Bay Beach hours zipped by at lightning speed and soon enough we’d load our sunburned selves back into the station wagon for the much quieter ride home. Most trips ended with more tickets than time, but that only meant we had to make a return trip before school started again. My kids, born in 1985 and 1987, spent many summer days at Bay Beach when they went with Grandma and Grandpa Totzke. My parents were brave enough to take all six grandkids and since tickets were still a dime in the 1990s they could have a fun day and not break the bank. They usually ate a picnic lunch, too, and made sure to bring plenty of extra bread or donut holes to feed the flocks of pigeons on the Bay Beach grounds. Fast forward a few decades and I’m going along to Bay Beach with my

When I tagged along on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2019 Bay Beach was still fun, exciting, and affordable. Tickets were now 25 cents each and some rides required more than one ticket, but it was still a big entertainment bargain. We agreed to meet my sister Diane, brother-in-law Pat, and their 20-month granddaughter Riley at Bay Beach on that warm (but not humid) Saturday. Diane and Pat had charge of cute little Riley while her parents were in Door County so they thought it might be a good time to introduce the toddler to her first amusement park. Axel, almost 6, planned to accompany Riley on the Ladybug, Boats, and a few other “little kid” rides, but Riley was a bit too scared. Still, she went on the train and braved the helicopter with Grandpa Pat. Riley also enjoyed a carousel ride with her grandpa, so much that she didn’t want to get off! Grandpa just shelled over more tickets and—problem solved— another fun ride for the toddler. After that Riley spent over an hour on the free playground equipment and enjoyed a good lunch. your voice | an essay As for the bigger kids, Maverick (9½) was gung-ho for the Zippin Pippin along with his mother Danielle. Axel didn’t quite make the four-foot height requirement, but he did the Falling Star, Sea Dragon, and Yo-Yo (Big Swings) for the first time. My sister Diane readily agreed to try out the roller coaster, so I took a deep breath and jumped out of my comfort zone to join them. Introduced to Bay Beach in 2011, the Zippin Pippin is one of the oldest wooden roller coasters in the U.S. and it was Elvis Presley’s favorite when it was located in Libertyland Amusement Park in Memphis, Tennessee.

4 p.m. and time to hit the road— another successful Bay Beach trip in the books. Later I texted Diane and her summary of the day was spot on. “I think places like Bay Beach are great because they’re innocent fun and because they’re generational. I love that we can pass it on and still enjoy

going 50 years after a first visit.” The late, great Elvis Presley was once asked his feelings on leaving a legacy. “Do something worth remembering,” Elvis said. I’d say a trip to Bay Beach—complete with a ride on The King’s favorite roller coaster—will be remembered for many years to come. 

While Elvis probably chowed down a few peanut butter and banana sandwiches before squeezing onto the Zippin Pippin on Aug. 8, 1977 (just eight days before his death), I was glad I’d only had a plain banana for breakfast on Aug. 10, 2019. Danielle and my grandson Maverick were strapped in the coaster car just ahead of Diane and I. Maverick looked back and grinned at us oldsters just before the coaster took off. Later, when asked about his favorite Bay Beach ride, it was no surprise that Mav mentioned the roller coaster. “I loved the Zippin Pippin. Grandma screamed the whole time, but it’s not even that scary!” Mav grinned. I loved the roller coaster too, but the 2,500-foot long ride with hills of between 35 and 70 feet was indeed scary to me. My sister Diane agreed the Zippin Pippin was a blast. “Best dollar I’ve spent in a while,” she said. Diane also said she liked watching her great-nephew Maverick be the brave kid showing the old folks how it’s done.
