Liebe Leserinnen, liebe Leser, die Wikipedia Definition des Frühlings lautet: In den gemäßigten Zonen ist er die Zeit der erwachenden und sprießenden Natur. Wir alle sehnen uns in diesem Jahr vielleicht mehr denn je nach diesem „erwachen und sprießen“ des Frühlings. Denn nach einem Winter ohne Schnee (zumindest ist bis zum Redaktionsschluss dieser Ausgabe keiner gefallen) kommt einem das letzte Vierteljahr eher wie ein nicht enden wollender November vor. Wir haben uns also ganz bewusst in dieser Ausgabe den Dingen gewidmet, für die wir wieder gerne vor die Tür gehen. Ob unterschiedliche Outdoor Sportarten in und um Hamburg oder die besten Bars der Stadt – wir haben einige gute Gründe gefunden, warum es sich lohnt den Mors (plattdeutsche Bezeichnung für Gesäß) vom Sofa hochzubekommen. Ganz besonders inspirierend ist unser Interview mit dem Schauspieler und Kampfkunstsportler Benjamin Piwko, von dem wir nicht nur erfuhren wie es sich in unserer Stadt lebt, wenn man gehörlos ist, sondern vor allem viele Lebensweisheiten für unser menschliches Miteinander auf den Weg nehmen konnten. Dear reader, the Wikipedia definition of spring is: In the temperate zones it's the time of awakening and budding nature. Perhaps more than ever, we all yearn for this "awakening and sprouting" of spring. Because after a winter without snow (at least there has been no snow until the editorial deadline of this issue) the last three months seem more like a never ending November. So we have deliberately devoted this issue to these things, for which we will gladly go outside the door again. Whether different outdoor sports in and around Hamburg or the best bars in the city – we have found some good reasons, why it is worth to get the "Mors" (Low German name for buttocks) off the sofa. Especially inspiring is our interview with the actor and martial arts athlete Benjamin Piwko, from whom we not only learned what living in our city means when you are deaf, but also took along many wisdoms for our human togetherness on our journey. PETER LINDBERGH „UNTOLD STORIES“ IM MK&G

Die erste von Lindbergh selbst kuratierte Werkschau, die der berühmte Fotograf kurz vor seinem Tod fertigstellte, wird im Sommer in Hamburg ausgestellt. Vom 20. Juni bis 1. November 2020 zeigt das Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Fotografien des außergewöhnlichen Künstlers. Lindbergh ist bekannt für seine intimen Porträts von den Supermodels der 90er-Jahre. „Untold Stories“ ist eine Hommage an den Mann hinter einigen der berühmtesten Modefotografien der jüngeren Geschichte.

MAN HÖRT NUR MIT DEM HERZEN GUT Der Hamburger Benjamin Piwko ist gelernter Tischler und leidenschaftlicher Schauspieler und Kampfkunst-Sportler. Eine spannende Kombination, die für die Lebensdynamik des 39-jährigen spricht. 2019 wagte er sich bei der beliebten TV-Show „Let’s Dance“ mit Isabel Edvardsson aufs Tanzparkett und schaffte es auf den dritten Platz – ohne die Musik hören zu können! Denn Benjamin Piwko verlor als Baby sein Gehör und musste lernen, auf andere Art und Weise zu kommunizieren. Ein lebensverändernder Schicksalsschlag, den er mit viel Kraft, Mut und Optimismus in etwas Positives umwandelte.

Heute zeigt er seinen Mitmenschen wie lebenswert das Leben trotzdem sein kann und was Hörende von Gehörlosen lernen können – nämlich eine ganze Menge. In seinem neuen Buch „Man hört nur mit dem Herzen gut“ erzählt er seine Geschichte mit einer berührenden Leichtigkeit, die jeden hörenden Leser demütig werden lässt. Das erklärte Ziel von Benjamin Piwko: Brücken bauen, damit die eine Seite die andere Seite besser versteht. Dabei setzt er auf die Kommunikation mit allen Sinnen – nicht nur mit den Ohren.

INTERVIEW

Du hast Lippenlesen und Sprechen gelernt und später erst die Gebärdensprache. Wie kam es dazu und in welcher „Sprache“ fühlst du dich heute am meisten zu Hause? (Welches Sinnesorgan ist bei dir am stärksten ausgeprägt?) Nicht alle Gehörlosen können von den Lippen ablesen oder sprechen. Ich habe im Alter von zwei Jahren eine besondere Ausbildung angefangen, die wahrlich kein Zuckerschlecken war. Es war hart, sprechen zu lernen. Dadurch, dass ich es gelernt habe, lebe ich nun irgendwie ein bisschen zwischen den Welten der Gehörlosen und der Hörenden. Das ist es, was es mir aber auch ermöglicht, Brücken zu bauen. Ich will die Welten miteinander verbinden und zeigen, was die eine von der anderen lernen kann. Und dennoch fühle ich mich in der Gebärdensprache am ehesten zu Hause, weil ich mir sicher sein kann, dass mein Gegenüber mich gut versteht.

Tipp 1: Achte auf die Körpersprache und versteh Sprache ohne Worte.

Du bist erfolgreicher Kampfkunstsportler und Schauspieler – wie kam es in deinem Leben zu dieser beruflichen Kombination? Ich bin auch gelernter Tischler und liebe es, Dinge aus Holz zu entwerfen und sie mit meinen Händen zu erbauen. Kampfsport, Tanzen und Schauspielerei sind meine Leidenschaften. Kampfsport und Tanzen brauche ich als Ausgleich, um mich körperlich zu betätigen. Bei der Schauspielerei habe ich ganz andere Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten, weil ich mich nun mal noch viel mehr über den Körper ausdrücke als vielleicht andere. Der Sport und die Schauspielerei sind für mich zudem eine Art Therapie. Sie machen mich innerlich frei und glücklich. Tanzen ohne Musik – wie konntest du bei „Let’s Dance“ den Takt mit deiner Tanzpartnerin Isabel Edvardsson halten, ohne etwas zu hören? Isabel und ich haben verschiedene Wege ausprobiert, wie uns das gelingen könnte. Unter anderem hat mich Isabel mit dem Druck ihrer Hände den Takt spüren lassen – manchmal auch nur mit Augen- oder Körperkontakt. Auch in den Choreographien hat sie versucht, den Schwerpunkt mehr auf Melodie und Gefühl zu setzen, weil ich das gut nachvollziehen und fühlen konnte. Sie hat mir zum Beispiel erklärt, wann eine Bewegung „laut“ ist. Das war dann für besonders raumgreifende oder große Bewegungen bestimmt. Wenn etwas „leise“ war, waren es paarinterne, intensive und zarte Bewegungen. Es war nicht immer einfach. Wenn ich das Gefühl für das Tempo eines Musikstücks gehabt hätte, hätte ich mich natürlich mehr auf die Tanzschritte konzentrieren können. So waren wir viel damit beschäftigt, dass ich Rhythmus und Tempo erlernen musste. Es waren für uns zusätzliche Herausforderungen. Umso stolzer sind wir auf unseren dritten Platz. In deinem neuen Buch »Man hört nur mit dem Herzen gut« zeigst du anhand persönlicher Geschichten, wie wir alle einander mit mehr Aufmerksamkeit und Empathie unser Gegenüber besser verstehen können. Welche drei Ratschläge kannst du einem Hörenden mit auf den Weg geben?

Tipp 2: Nimm deinen Gesprächspartner intensiv wahr. Sprich mehr mit seinen Augen und deiner Mimik. Je mehr Gefühle du in die Kommunikation bringst, desto lebendiger wird Kommunikation. Tipp 3: Sei mutiger im Umgang mit Menschen, die nicht deine Sprache sprechen. Auch wenn du dein Gegenüber anfangs nicht gut verstehst, könnt ihr an der Kommunikation haben und einen ganz eigenen Weg finden. Sei einfach offen und tolerant. Was wünschst du dir im Umgang mit Gehörlosen von deinen hörenden Mitmenschen? Ich wünsche mir, dass wir nicht mehr von den einen und den anderen sprechen, sondern dass wir alle in der Kommunikation auf unser Gegenüber achten und es verstehen. Wir können so viel von unserem Gegenüber lernen, allein, indem wir es einfach mal fragen, was die richtige Hilfe für es ist, wie ich es unterstützen kann, welche Stärke und Talente es hat – völlig unabhängig davon, ob jemand hört oder nicht hören kann. Inklusion und Barrierefreiheit sind heutzutage wichtige politische Themen, wie erlebst du deine Heimatstadt Hamburg in diesem Zusammenhang? Wie problemlos kannst du dich in Hamburg bewegen? Mein größter Wunsch ist, dass es überall einen Untertitel gibt – egal, ob Film, Theater, Werbung oder Informationen in der Öffentlichkeit. Erst dann werden wir auch von der Öffentlichkeit nicht mehr zu Behinderten gemacht, sondern als normal angesehen und auch so behandelt. In vielen kleinen Schritten versuche ich, Menschen darauf aufmerksam zu machen und etwas zu verbessern. Ich will Brücken bauen, damit die eine Seite die andere Seite versteht.

Im Alter von acht Monaten hast du dein Gehör verloren – als Folge eines Behandlungsfehlers einer Erkältung. Du hättest allen Grund, mit deinem Schicksal zu hadern, stattdessen motivierst und inspirierst du sogar hörende Menschen, wie gelingt dir das? Ich versuche, hörende Menschen zum „Zuhören“ zu bringen, indem ich darauf aufmerksam mache, wie wichtig das „Zuhören“ und Kommunikation allgemein sind. Ich selbst kann nur kommunizieren, wenn mein Gegenüber mich wirklich anschaut und aufmerksam ist. Hörenden Menschen fehlt oft genau dieses Attribut: sich Zeit für eine Kommunikation zu nehmen, sich dabei anzuschauen und dabei nicht nur die Stimme des Gegenübers, sondern auch seine Körpersprache und die Gefühle wahrzunehmen. Das gehört meiner Meinung nach zu einer guten Kommunikation dazu. Wer einem Menschen das Gefühl geben möchte, das er wirklich „da” ist, sollte mit all seinen Sinnen kommunizieren und eben nicht nur mit Ohren und Mund. Eben diese Sinne sind bei mir umso stärker ausgeprägt. Ich höre mit meinen Augen, mit meiner Körpersprache und mit meinem Herzen. Das möchte ich gern anderen vermitteln und zeigen, dass Kommunikation Spaß macht, wenn wir alle Sinne einsetzen und nicht „nur“ unsere Ohren.

Hat es manchmal vielleicht auch Vorteile, in dieser immer lauteren, sich schneller drehenden Welt in der Stille zu leben? Total. Ich lebe in ständiger Ruhe. Wir wissen ja, dass permanenter Lärm Stress erzeugt und zum Beispiel zum Burn-Out führen kann. Auch werden Menschen durch Lärm abgelenkt und können sich nicht zu 100 Prozent konzentrieren. All das kann mir nicht passieren. In meiner stillen Welt erlebe ich zudem alles viel intensiver und purer. Ich bin deutlich fokussierter als andere und lebe gesünder. Wenn du dir wünschen könntest, ein Geräusch zu hören, welches wäre es? Alles, was mit Musik zu tun hat. Ich würde gern einmal einen Takt wahrnehmen, anstatt Lotto zu spielen, wie schnell ich jetzt tanzen muss. Und gern würde ich mal die Stimmen von Menschen und Tiergeräusche hören. Ich liebe die Natur und glaube, dass ich sie noch anders wahrnehmen würde, wenn ich zum Beispiel den Wind oder den Regen in den Bäumen hören könnte. Was ist dein Lieblingsort in Hamburg und warum? Es gibt keinen speziellen Lieblingsort, ich liebe Hamburg einfach für das, was und wie es ist: nämlich weltoffen mit mehr Brücken als Venedig und Amsterdam zusammen. Und genau das ist ja, was auch ich will: Brücken bauen. Egal, woher jemand kommt und wer jemand ist, wir leben alle auf demselben Planeten. Lasst uns „einfach“ für unser Gegenüber offen sein.

YOU ONLY HEAR WELL WITH YOUR HEART Hamburger Benjamin Piwko is a trained carpenter, passionate actor and martial arts athlete. An exciting combination that is truly representative of the dynamics of the 39-year-old's life. In 2019, he ventured onto the dance floor in the popular TV show “Let’s Dance” with Isabel Edvardsson and made it to third place – without being able to hear the music! Benjamin Piwko lost his hearing as a baby and had to learn to communicate in a different way. A life-changing stroke of fate that he has transformed into something positive

with a great deal of strength, courage and optimism. Today, he shows the rest of us how life is worth living nevertheless and what hearing people can learn from deaf people – which is a lot. In his new book “You only hear well with your heart”, he tells his story with a touching lightness that will make every hearing reader feel humbled. Benjamin Piwko has a clear goal: to build bridges so that one side understands the other better. This means focusing on communication with all the senses, not just the ears.

You’re a successful martial arts athlete and actor – how did you end up doing both these things professionally? I’m also a trained carpenter and love to design things made from wood and build them with my hands. Martial arts, dancing and acting are my passions. I need martial arts and dancing as a balance, to keep physically active. In acting, completely different ways of expressing myself are open to me because I express myself much more through my body than perhaps others do. Sport and acting are also a kind of therapy for me. They make me feel free and happy inside.

You lost your hearing at the age of eight months as a result of a medical error in treatment during a cold. You would have every reason to struggle with your fate but instead you motivate and even inspire hearing people. How do you manage it? I try to get hearing people to “listen” by making them aware of how important listening and communication in general is. I myself can only communicate when my counterpart really looks at me and is attentive. And yet I still feel most at home when using sign language because that’s when I can be absolutely sure that my counterpart understands me well.

Which three pieces of advice would you give a hearing person? Tip 1: Pay attention to body language and understand language without words. Tip 2: Focus intently on your conversational partner. Speak more with your eyes and facial expressions. The more emotions you bring to the communication, the more alive it becomes. Tip 3: Be braver in interacting with people who don’t speak your language. Even if you can’t understand your counterpart well at the beginning, you can try to communicate with them and find your own way of understanding each other. Simply be open and tolerant. What do you wish for when you interact with hearing people as a deaf person? I wish that we wouldn’t talk so much about “us and them” but that we all paid more attention when communicating with our counterparts and try to understand each other. We can learn so much from our counterpart, simply by asking them what the right way to help them is, how I can support them, what strength and talents they have – regardless of whether they can hear or not. Inclusion and accessibility are important political issues today. Is your home town of Hamburg up to the mark in this respect? How easy is it for you to live in Hamburg? My biggest wish is for there to be subtitles everywhere, whether for films, the theatre, advertising or public information. Only then will we no longer be made disabled by society, but be seen as normal and treated as such. I try to take many small steps to make people aware of this and improve it a bit. I want to build bridges so that one side understands the other.

Does it sometimes have advantages to live in silence in this ever louder, faster-paced world? Absolutely. I live in constant silence. We of course know that permanent noise creates stress and can, for example, lead to burnout. People are also distracted by noise and cannot concentrate 100 per cent on what they're doing. I don't experience any of this. In my silent world I also experience everything much more intensively and purely. I am much more focused than others and live a healthier life. If there’s one sound you wish you could hear, what would it be? Anything to do with music. I would love to be able to hear a beat instead of guessing all the time how fast I need to dance. And I'd love to hear people’s voices and animal sounds. I love nature and I think I'd perceive it differently if I could hear the wind or the rain in the trees, for example. What's your favourite place in Hamburg and why? I don’t have a particular favourite place, I simply love Hamburg for what it is and the way it is: cosmopolitan with more bridges than Venice and Amsterdam combined. And that's exactly what I want: to build bridges. No matter where someone comes from or who someone is, we all live on the same planet, after all. Let’s just be open to our fellow humans.

ie Uhr tickt. Noch fünf Sekunden, noch vier. Ein Punkt Rückstand. Der Ball? In deiner Hand. Drei Sekunden. Dribbling. Noch zwei Sekunden. Du steigst hoch – eine Sekunde – und wirfst. Der Buzzer ertönt. Dann Totenstille. Erst wieder unterbrochen vom „Swish“. Dem Sound, den der Ball macht, wenn er im Korb zappelt. Spiel gewonnen. Das ist der Traum eines jeden Kindes, das Basketball spielt. Eine Partie in letzter Sekunde entscheiden. Am besten: in der NBA. Drei für Korbjäger magische Buchstaben, die für die US-amerikanische Profiliga, die beste der Welt, stehen. Dort, wo Legenden wie Michael Jordan Erfolge feierten und Ausnahmetalente wie LeBron James Meisterschaften gewinnen und Rekorde brechen. Der Traum wird für die meisten einer bleiben. Ihnen gelingt allenfalls ein Gamewinner in der Bezirksliga. Doch in Hamburg kann er auf kleinerer Stufe nun tatsächlich gelebt werden, wenn die NBA ihre Jr. League in der Hansestadt startet – als ersten deutschen Standort überhaupt. Federführend vor Ort sind dabei neben dem Deutschen Basketball Bund und dem Hamburger Basketball-Verband vor allem die Hamburg Towers. Die Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg sowie die Hamburger Sportjugend unterstützen das zunächst für vier Jahre ausgelegte Projekt ebenfalls. Kein geringerer Ort als das Rathaus durfte es sein, um die Zusammenarbeit zu verkünden.

Aber worum handelt es sich bei der der Hamburger Jr. NBA League genau? Auf den Punkt gebracht, geht es hier um eine Schulliga für Schüler zwischen elf und 13 Jahren. Jeder teilnehmenden Bildungseinrichtung wurde ein NBATeam zugelost, in dessen Trikots sie während der von Februar bis Juni andauernden Saison antritt. So vertritt beispielsweise das Gymnasium Alsterdorf die glorreichen Los Angeles Lakers, der Towers-Partner Stadtteilschule Stübenhofer Weg geht für die Houston Rockets ins Rennen. Ähnlich wie in der realen NBA treten die Mannschaften in zwei Conferences und fünf Divisionen an. Auf die reguläre Serie folgen die Play-offs, das Finale wird in der Wilhelmsburger edel-optics.de Arena ausgetragen – und es wird spannend: Zum Showdown hat sich ein noch nicht benannter ehemaliger NBA-Akteur angekündigt. he clock is ticking. Just five more seconds, then four. One point behind. The ball? In your hand. Three seconds. Dribbling. Two seconds left. You stretch– one second – and throw. The buzzer sounds. Then dead silence. Only interrupted again by a “swish” sound. The sound the ball makes when it wriggles through the basket. Game won. The dream of every kid who plays basketball. Being the one to decide a game at the last second. Preferably in the NBA. Three magic letters for basketball players, and which stand for the US professional league, the best in the world. It’s where legends such as LeBron James and Michael Jordan win championships and break records.

For most, this will remain but a dream. At best, they succeed in winning a game in the district league. But in Hamburg, they can now actually live their dream on a smaller scale because the NBA is launching its junior scheme in the Hanseatic city – its first German location ever. Hamburg Towers are in charge of the project locally alongside the German Basketball Federation and the Hamburg Basketball Association. The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the Hamburger Sportjugend association are also supporting the project, which is scheduled to run for four years in the first instance. And the collaboration was announced in no less grand a place than the town hall.

But what exactly is the Jr. NBA Hamburg League? In a nutshell, it is a school league for pupils between the ages of 11 and 13. Each participating educational institution has been assigned an NBA team and will compete in their jerseys during the season, which lasts from February to June. For example, Gymnasium Alsterdorf school will represent the glorious Los Angeles Lakers, while the Towers’ partner school Stadtteilschule Stübenhofer Weg will be competing for the Houston Rockets. Similar to the real NBA, the teams will compete in two conferences and five divisions. The regular series will be followed by the playoffs and the finals will be held in the Wilhelmsburg edel-optics.de Arena – and is bound to be super exciting: a former NBA player whose name has not yet been announced will be there for the showdown. Dr. Brandenburg, darf man im Frühjahr noch „unter den Laser“? Kommt man rechtzeitig vor den sonnenintensiven Wochen und befolgt alle Schutzmaßnahmen, sind hauterneuernde Laserbehandlungen nie ein Problem. Zum Beispiel zur Grunderneuerung des Teints bis in die Tiefe: Der fraktionierte Erbium-Laser glättet und verfeinert Poren, reduziert Pigmentflecken und Falten und gibt einen intensiven Straffungsimpuls. Um Besenreiser, eine oberflächlich sichtbare Krampfadervariante, schnell loszuwerden, veröde ich die Adernetze. Bei dieser Sklerosierung verklebt das injizierte Medikament betroffene Venenwände. Verödete Äderchen werden nicht länger durchblutet und über den Stoffwechsel abgebaut, bis die Stellen in der Regel verblassen. Gegen unerwünschtes Körperhaar nutzen Sie einen Epilaser – warum? Weil es für die Haut echter Stress ist, wenn man sie ständig rasiert oder waxt. Weil Krebs vor niemand Halt macht – egal, ob Kleinkind oder Senior – rate ich altersunabhängig zu regelmäßigen Vorsorgeterminen. Ich mache das HautScreening mit Auflichtmikroskop und softwaregestützter Dokumentation und gebe immer eine individuelle SPF-Empfehlung. Auffällige Male und Hautveränderungen bis zu weißem Hautkrebs und dessen Vorstufen entferne ich, falls nötig, direkt in meinem OP.

Smooth, healthy skin or optimising our figures slightly are possible with just a few dermatology appointments. Dr Brandenburg, can we still go “under the laser” in the spring? If you go in time, before the really sunny weeks begin, and follow all protective measures, skin renewing laser treatments shouldn’t ever be a problem. For example, with a complete and deep-rooted renewal of the complexion, the fractional erbium laser smooths and refines pores, reduces pigmentation spots and wrinkles and gives an intense firming boost. In order to heal, I recommend taking time off for 5 to 7 days, and protecting yourself against sunlight including using the highest possible SPF is mandatory for at least 6 weeks. Your new, baby-soft skin shouldn’t be damaged at this stage. I use the Quadro Star Pro Yellow to treat small to extensive areas of redness and other vascular-related marks. Its light glues and seals dilated vessels in a targeted way while sparing the surrounding tissue, provided the skin isn’t already tanned. Radiant glow without fuss – do you also offer this? You use an epilaser to get rid of unwanted body hair – why? Because it is really stressful for the skin if you constantly shave or wax it. To avoid chronic inflammation, the epilaser is my means of choice. The light of the diode laser travels to the hair root, where the melanin part of the hair follicle converts it into heat. The process destroys the follicle and the hair cannot grow back. The method has no side effects even for most dark skin types, but tanning should be avoided for a few weeks before and afterwards. As a skin tumour expert, you’re no doubt looking to the summer with mixed feelings: after all, skin cancer is on the rise. We all need the sun – and protection from it, as rising numbers of cancer cases of both black and white skin cancer show. Because cancer doesn’t discriminate – whether you’re a small child or a senior citizen, I advise regular check-ups regardless of age. I carry out skin screening with a reflected light microscope and software-supported documentation and always give an individual SPF recommendation. Both women and men are developing varicose veins more and more frequently. The tendency is often a genetic one, but lack of exercise and poor diet contribute greatly. In order to quickly get rid of spider veins, a superficially visible varicose vein variant, I collapse the vein. In sclerotherapy, the injected drug sticks to the affected vein walls. Collapsed veins are no longer supplied with blood and are broken down via the metabolism and normally these areas then fade away. As treatment is supported with compression stockings, spring is a good time to do this.
