THE CHAIRMAN

Welcome to Central Park this afternoon’s JD Welsh Cup Tie with Llangefni Town of the Lock Stock Ardal North West.

I’d like to extend a warm Denbigh welcome to all the Llangefni players, coaching team, Committee and supporters.

Our lads are on a good run of form with two impressive away wins at Holywell and Bangor as well as a draw here against Mold Alexandra, helping us move up the JD Cymru North Llangefni will be looking for a giant killing win over us and are in fifth position of their League. They lost their last game 3-2 via a last minute winner to our near neighbours Llannefydd last weekend.

We have recently made the decision as a Club to apply for the Tier 1 Licence from the FAW. We presently play in Tier 2 football in the JD Cymru North and have successfully been granted this licence for the last few seasons. When we were in the Huws Gray Cymru Alliance (now the present JD Cymru North) we held the licence and we continued to have this criteria when we were in the Lock Stock Ardal North West ( Tier 3) as we were looking to bounce back to Tier 2 football .

We now feel this is a logical step to take as we look to enhance our facilities off the field with the new changing rooms, kitchen and function room The First Team are doing well on the pitch and if we are not able to gain promotion this season, then we want to know whether our facilities will be good enough for Tier 1 football going forward.

It shows the FAW our ambition as a Club to compete at the highest level We had to submit our intention to apply by the end of September and of the sixteen clubs in the JD Cymru North, eleven of those Clubs have applied like ourselves. This is evidence of what a strong league we are playing in with all these Clubs having aspirations of reaching the Cymru Premier

Today though, our focus is on Cup action and getting through to the next round. We all saw what a good cup run can do for the Club and the Town when we had those great runs two seasons ago. Some of those days were so memorable and it would be great to replicate these again this season.

Enjoy the game

THE GAFFER

Welcome to Central Park for this afternoon’s JD Welsh Cup tie against Llangefni Town of the Lock Stock Ardal North West.

It’s our first home game of the season to be played on a Saturday afternoon, the last Saturday game being played here back in February

This is the only Cup competition we remain in this season having exited the Nathaniel MG Cup against Llay Welfare and the Welsh Blood Service League Cup against Gresford We all want a good Cup run as the memories of 2022/23 are still fresh If you recall we then won the Lock Stock Ardal Northern League Cup in great fashion with a 6-1 win over Bow Street at Caersws . That season we also reached the final of the Dragon Signs FAW Amateur Trophy, losing 2-1 to Trethomas Bluebirds of Cardiff at Newtown’s Latham Park

The Cup run did wonders for our confidence that season and it would be special to have a similar experience this season in the Welsh Cup

Llangefni will provide stern opposition and are underdogs coming into the game as they play in the division below ourselves They were on a good run in the league up until last weekend having won their last four games and their manager Sion Jones has gathered a team of local lads who I know will give us a tough game today. Llannefydd beat them 3-2 last Saturday, so they’ll be keen to avoid two defeats in a week in the Vale of Clwyd

We’re on a good run of form with some excellent results recently. We’ve had three tough games against Holywell, Mold Alex and Bangor 1876 and to have got seven points from these games is down to the hard work all the lads have put in at training and on the pitch It could have so easily been nine points as Mold equalised in the last minute of the game .

Last Friday night at Bangor showed how far we’ve come in recent games We had a game plan which worked well as we knew they would put us under a lot of pressure from the start We withstood that and nabbed two quick goals through Nathan Brown and Owen Davies. They pulled one back before half time via a sloppy goal and were looking strong at that time with them having more possession and posing more of a threat on our goal During the break we aimed to set up slightly differently for the next forty-five minutes

They scored an equaliser through a well taken goal and with everything to play for I felt our substitutions paid dividends Paul Fleming came on and after linking well with Iwan Roberts he cooly slotted in our third Harrison Bellis had impressed in the Reserves the week before at Connah’s Quay Nomads with a hat-trick and merited a call back into the squad. For him to come on in the 80th minute and then grab the winner in the 96th was just rewards for his attitude and hard work

I see this as going to show that we have to use the whole squad in games, and we cannot rely solely on the starting eleven playing the whole match By using our substitutes wisely and being able to really make effective changes this will hurt the opposition in key areas and at key times of the game

This afternoon though, I’m looking for us to progress into the next round of the Cup

Thanks for your support

BELLIS BLASTS WINNER IN STOPPAGE TIME AT BANGOR

Bangor 1876 3-4 Denbigh Town

Denbigh Town made it back-to-back away wins for the first time since November 2023 with a stunning 4-3 victory at Bangor 1876.

Harrison Bellis six days removed from a hatrick for the Reserves continued his scoring with a last minute winner to snatch all three points at Nantporth

Birthday boy Nathan Brown opened the scoring with Owen Davies making it five from five in the opening 17 minutes as Town took a 2-1 lead into the break.

Bangor fought back only for substitute Paul Fleming to net within four minutes of coming on, and despite a third fightback from Bangor, Bellis finished to put the icing on the cake of a massive win

Dewi Llion named just one change to the XI with Aaron Jones returning from injury in the place of Luke Wilmot, whilst Bellis returned to the squad after missing last time out.

The first sight of goal came after just four minutes when neat work from Bangor saw Corrig McGonigle hit the post from a deft flick just a few yards out Not deterred, Denbigh began getting forward well and had their just rewards on seven minutes Davies ran through before striking both posts and Brown was on the spot to fire in the rebound

Bangor were now on the hunt for a leveller and on 16 minutes came close when Town were forced to clear a scramble before a foul on the edge of the box led to McGonigle’s free-kick firing over.

A minute later Denbigh’s start to the game got even better, Sam Duffy made inroads down the right before squaring it to Davies to stroke home.

Despite the two goal advantage Bangor were still dangerous, and halved the defecit on 24 minutes when poor defending led to a corner not being cleared and Tom Clarke’s header trickling into the net

Denbigh looking to restore the two goal lead had a flurry of chances come their way to see out the half. On 34 minutes Keelan Williams was denied when his powerful effort from the left was pushed wide by Bradley Farrar, before Iwan Roberts fed Davies who one on one couldn’t beat the keeper

After the restart, the home side applied huge pressure as they sought an early equaliser After consistent attack they finally found it with a leftfooted finish from Mason Blackwell-Jones on 56 minutes

Denbigh made some changes just after the hour mark when Fleming and Alfie Vaughan were introduced for Brown and Cal Butler. A minute later Aaron Jones was called upon to make a stop denying Joe Culshaw’s effort from the edge of the box

On 66 minutes Denbigh restored their lead Fleming who’d been on the pitch just a few moments started the move with a ball wide to Iwan Roberts before his effort is blocked and Fleming picked up the loose ball, threading it into the bottom right corner

Four minutes later Davies had a shot deflect over for a corner before McGonigle at the other end had a bicycle kick saved by Jones who somehow got his hand to it to push over the bar Three minutes later Bangor did find the net though, as Culshaw picked up another loose ball in the Denbigh box to smash home

With six to play it looked like Bangor could win it with McGonigle standing over a free kick on the edge of the box, only for his effort to crash against the crossbar Substitute Joe Sullivan had sight of goal from the edge of the box on 88 minutes but Jones did well to get down and deny

With five minutes of added time, it looked like surely another goal would come and in the madness of the game it did. Bellis, introduced with ten minutes to spare had caused problems and eventually, the ball dropped to him in the box to poke home a famous first goal for the club.

BRIEF HISTORY: DENBIGH TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB

Denbigh Town Football Club was formed in 1880 and have been one of the longest-serving clubs in North Wales.

The early years saw the club play in a number of leagues including the North Wales Coast and Welsh Senior League, as well as time in the old Combination.

The club rose to fame in the 1920s when during the 1923/24 campaign, it won its first and only national honour, the Welsh Amateur Cup beating Lovell’s Athletic. The club went under different names throughout those years including United and Juniors before settling on Town in the 1950s

Following the Second World War Denbigh clinched numerous honours before the golden period of the 1970s that saw the club dominate the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) winning four successive league titles

After turning to the Clwyd Premier following the departure of successful manager John Trefor Roberts, the club shot back up the ladder upon the appointment of Bill Dawson who took the club from the Clwyd Premier to the Cymru Alliance in just four years

The club remained in the second tier for six years before returning to the Welsh Alliance but under Tim Dyer the club was promoted alongside a Cookson Cup success in 2007.

In 2013/14 the club went unbeaten in the Welsh Alliance earning a third promotion to tier two after their return to the division in 2010. In 2015/16 the club reached it’s second national final and the biggest game in club history when reaching the League Cup Final, losing to professional outfit TNS on national television.

Upon relegation from the Cymru Alliance in 2019, manager Dewi Llion rebuilt his squad and in 2023 earned a league and cup double to move up to the JD Cymru North, finishing 6th in their first season back

A 132 YEAR HISTORY FOR DENBIGH AND THE CUP

It’s a competition that Denbigh have played their part in for 132 years and this afternoon the club writes it’s next chapter in this historic story.

It all began in 1892 when Denbigh first entered the staple of Welsh football with a thrilling clash against Ruthin Town It ended 3-3 in the blue half of the Vale of Clwyd but Ruthin would go on to advance

Our first win in the competition came a year later at home to Ellesmere in a 5-2 success before a Second Round win over Hope Wanderers in Denbigh by the same scoreline and ultimately bowing out to Berwyn.

Those sides among a host of others no longer compete with names such as Northern Nomads, Grapes Moss and the 31st Territorial Army of Kinmel Bay all opponents over the early decades. Against another of those sides, Bagillt, were significant as Denbigh made history with their biggest ever win, 14-0 away from home back in October 1954, 70 years ago.

Denbigh’s best performance came in the 1962/63 campaign when Town reached the Fifth Round They entered much like this season in the Second Round beating Brymbo Steelworks 52 away from home before triumphing at Overton St Mary’s 6-4 on the road. That led to manoeuvring past Llay via a replay before losing out to Borough United in Round Five Borough went on to win the competition and became the first Welsh club to ever win a round in European football when they defeated Maltese side Sliema Wanderers. They went on to exit the UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup to Slovan Bratislava of Slovakia

In the next 60 years Denbigh would reach the Fourth Round just three times and haven’t done so since 1972. The club had a six year hiatus between 1988 and 1994 from the competition, and since then have made it to the Third Round three times, losing all games to South Walian competition Those losses came to Port Talbot (2008), Barry Town United (2015) and Cambrian & Clydach (2018)

It’s fair to say Denbigh are long overdue some Welsh Cup success and it could start today against Llangefni It’s the second meeting between the two sides in the competition and is set

One of Anglesey’s longest-serving clubs, Llangefni were founded in 1897 but football in the town stretches back five years previous.

Llangefni first played competitive football in the newly formed Anglesey league which they spent a number of decades in, winning six league titles and a string of cup successes. The club accepted promotion into the Gwynedd League in 1988/89 and in their first season they achieved the treble, winning the League Championship along with the Eryri Shield and the Gwynedd Cup, the following season 1989/90 they repeated this tremendous achievement

The following season 1990/91 the club accepted promotion into the Welsh Alliance where they won the League Championship, the Barritt and Alves Cups They then went on to win the Barritt Cup outright after treble success in the competition for season's 1990/91, 1991/92 and again in 1992/93, they also won the Cookson Cup in 1993/94 and also won the Welsh Alliance League Championship four times between 1990 and 1999, as well as being the only Anglesey club to ever have won the Welsh Intermediate Cup back in 1992

Llangefni entered the Cymru Alliance in 1999 before cementing themselves in the second tier and in 2007 won promotion to the top flight losing just one game all season The side were relegated from the Welsh Premier League in their first season before winning promotion back in 2010, only to be denied a top flight licence

From being so close to promotion to the Welsh Premier to playing in the Anglesey League three years later, Llangefni dropped quickly with relegation before a depleted squad meant resignation from the third tier in 2013 The side regrouped and in 2015 won promotion back to the Welsh Alliance before returning to the Cymru North in 2019 The side spent three years in the second division before suffering relegation to the Lock Stock Ardal North-West in April 2022. The side finished 6th in their first season back before an 8th placed effort last term as they look to return to the JD Cymru North

THE SUPER SIX

The magic of the Cup is always alive in Denbigh, here we take a look at six of the best cup clashes in Denbigh Town history including silverware, giant-killings and memorable night’s at Central Park

Denbigh Town 6-1 Bow Street (Ardal Northern League Cup - 20/05/2023)

It was the icing on the cake of a magnificent season as Denbigh Town lifted the Lock Stock Ardal Northern League Cup in the baking mid-Wales heat In a remarkable season for Town, Dewi Llion took his side to Caersws in the hunt for a league and cup double and did so with aplomb, knocking Bow Street for six. Goals from Paul Fleming (2), Matthew Worrall (2), Nathan Brown and Jake Walker secured the silverware.

Rhuddlan 2-12 Denbigh Town (JD Welsh Cup QR20/07/2021)

Denbigh’s second game back after the resumption of football in 2021 would go down in history. Town knocked 12 goals past Rhuddlan in the Qualifying Round of the

Welsh Cup in their biggest recorded win since 1954 Mark Roberts netted five, Jake Walker scored a hatrick, Jacob Barratt bagged a brace along with goals from Danny Clarke and Lee Davey

Denbigh Town 1-0 Connah’s Quay Nomads (Nathaniel MG Cup Semi-Final - 18/11/2015)

Top flight sides Rhyl and Airbus UK Broughton had already been dispatched of along with Holyhead as Denbigh went on a run all the way to the final of the Nathaniel MG Cup in 2015/16. Town were drawn at home to another Cymru Premier side in Connah’s Quay in the Semi-Final in what was a huge ask for Town In front of a packed Central Park goalkeeper Elliot Power made a string of outstanding saves before denying Nomads from the penalty spot With seven to play Sam Jones wrote his name into the history books to send Denbigh to their first national final since 1924.

Denbigh Town 2-0 Halkyn United (Cookson Cup Final09/05/1996)

When looking back on the glory years of Denbigh Town it’s difficult to look past the 1990s under the stewardship of Bill Dawson Town had gone from the Clwyd League to the Cymru Alliance in the space of three years, earning promotion from the Welsh Alliance in 1995/96 They rounded off a brilliant campaign with a Cookson Cup win against Halkyn in Llandudno, with a brace from Peter O’Brien securing the cup for the first time

Denbigh Town 1-0 Caernarfon Town (NWCFA Challenge Cup - 29/02/1992)

Perhaps the biggest shock result in the history of North Wales, Denbigh then of the fourth tier Clwyd League faced semi-professional Northern Premier League outfit Caernarfon Town. Nobody gave Town a chance in what looked to be a simple win for the visiting Cofi’s under the management of legendary former Town boss John Trefor Roberts However, goalkeeper Garry Wayne Jones played the game of his life before Alan Anderson netted a sensational effort on 62 minutes to record a famous win at Central Park.

Bagillt United 0-14 Denbigh Town (Welsh Cup - 1954)

A record setting game that still hasn’t been since, Denbigh Town ran rampant in the 1954/55 Welsh Cup Having already knocked out Coedpoeth 8-1 in the First Round, Denbigh were initially drawn away to Bagillt United before switching the game to Denbigh Town took home advantage and ran with it netting a staggering fourteen to advance to the third round No game in recorded history has a bigger win for Denbigh

Denbigh United 2-1 Lovell’s Athletic (Welsh Amateur Cup - 29/04/1924)

Denbigh’s first and only national title, Town - or as they were then known, United - won the Welsh Amateur Cup (now the FAW Amateur Trophy) in April 1924 against Newport based Lovell’s A tough opposition, Denbigh had to be at their best at Broncoed Park in Mold and in front of a well attended crowd saw Bates and Davies net to bring the silverware back to the Vale of Clwyd

DENBIGH TOWN LADIES

Denbigh Town Ladies’ super start to the league season continued last weekend.

Ellen Lawson’s side faced Northop Hall in their third game of the campaign running out convincing 7-1 winners.

Catrin Davies and Beth Kell both grabbed a hatrick whilst Vanessa Hodgson found the net for the first time this season.

The Ladies now have three wins from three in the league and sit top of the tree in the early stages

In the Betty Pickering Cup Group stages they remain unbeaten and joint top of the group following a win over Caernarfon and last minute leveller away at Kinmel Bay. They continue their campaign in the cup away at Llanystumdwy next weekend.

DENBIGH TOWN RESERVES

ILiam Nash’s Reserves tasted defeat for the first time under his stewardship at Gresford last week.

After going into the break goalless a quartet of goals from Rob Reynolds saw the hosts take three points at Clappers Lane. Denbigh had two debuts with youngster Tomos Jones coming off the bench as well as new signing Sam Luke.

It followed on from an impressive win a week previous over Connah’s Quay Nomads where goals from Tom Salisbury (brace) and Harrison Bellis (hatrick) secured a huge win over the league leaders who had won every single game since December of last year.

The Reserves are next in action this time next week with the short journey to St Asaph City.
