THE CHAIRMAN

Welcome to Central Park this evening for tonight’s JD Cymru North league game against Mold Alexandra.

I’d like to extend a warm Denbigh welcome to all the Mold Alex players, coaching team, Committee and supporters

Since our last first team game against Colwyn Bay we’ve seen the steel structure of our building having been erected It's so good to see the new building start to happen after a few months of demolishing the old changing rooms and kitchen and laying the foundations for our new building I’m sure you’ll agree, it does look impressive and over the next few months will really start to take shape.

We’ve been fortunate to have had so much support from the FAW with helping to finance this project after being announced as one of the grounds to host the 2026 UEFA EURO Under 19s tournament here in North Wales.

Our neighbours Ruthin have also been granted assistance from the FAW with the new pitch they are laying at the moment, and this has meant they are now playing their home fixtures at Bala. Our local derby with Ruthin is traditionally held on Boxing Day and this year it was Ruthin’s turn to host the game However, both Clubs felt it should be held in the Vale of Clwyd to help attract a large crowd like to last season’s 1,145 here at Central Park. So, both Clubs have agreed that this coming Boxing Day the game will be held at Central Park with an early kick off shortly after the traditional Roll the Barrel event held on the High Street in Denbigh

We’ve had a managerial change with our Reserves team recently with Jordan Baker standing down after taking the reins during the close season The Club is extremely grateful to Jordan for all that he has done in putting together a promising young local team with many joining the Reserves squad from our Junior section. Liam Nash has agreed to take on the managerial role having helped coach the First Team since the start of the season Liam’s team had an impressive 6-2 win over Buckley Town last Friday night and now go on to a run of away fixtures in October

I had a meeting recently with our Ladies & Girls coaches as we look to attract more Girls to play football here at the Club We currently have three Girls teams, and the aim is for these players to ultimately move on to play for the Senior Ladies team Ellen Lawson is the manager of the Ladies team with Carla Rizzi their captain. Both these Ladies are also coaching two of our Girls teams and we all agreed they could do with some more assistance in running the junior teams So, if you feel you would like to be a coach or help out in any way with our Ladies and Girls teams, please get in touch with myself or Ellen

This evening it’s another tough game for our First Team tonight They come into the game after a great 2-0 win last week away at Holywell To beat the league champions on their home turf was a great achievement and the whole team need to be commended on such a great display. It was certainly well deserved.

Last November we had a thrilling game here between the two teams with Dan Parry-Jones heading home the winner in the 95th minute to see Denbigh take three points in a 3-2 win Something like that will do us tonight. Enjoy the game!

THE GAFFER

Welcome back to Central Park for this evening’s JD Cymru North league game against Mold Alexandra.

We come into the game on the back of a superb 2-0 win away at Holywell last Saturday. After a few indifferent results recently, we went into the game with a different game plan than usual which worked well. We knew the pitch would be heavy after all the rain in the previous week and were aware that Holywell’s pitch does have a few drainage issues

It was therefore a question of selecting a team to suit those conditions and it paid dividends right from the start when Owen Davies slotted home well in the first minute. Holywell then put us under enormous pressure during that first half and our back four did so well in keeping their attackers at bay with some outstanding defending. Max Cooke and Ben Lockley were so commanding in the air dealing with Holywell’s aerial threat.

Our midfielders all battled well and put in some vital challenges and Aaron Jones in goal was called upon to make some fantastic saves Despite Holywell’s onslaught we still managed to create two golden chances in that first 45 minutes which could have made life easier of they’d been taken

Still, I knew it was so important to get to half time with a 1-0 lead so that we could regroup and plan our second half strategy. It was the type of game which invited tackles in wet conditions and both teams had players receiving yellow cards in a competitive first half

The fresh legs and freedom to commit to tackles helped us in the second half and we had a lot more of the ball. Once again, Holywell piled on the pressure and Aaron made a simply outstanding save at point blank range to keep us in the lead We created several excellent chances ourselves and if they’d been taken the winning margin could have been larger.

The icing on the cake that afternoon was our second goal deep into injury time from Sam Duffy. He took his chance with confidence and power to give us a win that has meant so much to the squad. The scenes afterwards were special.

We go into tonight’s match looking to carry on with that performance and spirit. We have a full squad to choose from and it is a nice problem to have selecting a starting eleven with such competition for places. We’ve had a good training session this week with everyone fit and available for selection.

Mold will provide tough opposition and the lads will need no reminding that we lost to a last minute goal at to them in August. This was despite us having countless chances that game to have been home and dry long before the final whistle.

It should be a cracking game under the lights.

TOWN STUN CHAMPIONS WITH FIRST AWAY WIN!

Denbigh Town marked their first away win of the campaign by stunning last season’s champions in a 2-0 success.

Goals at either end of the game from Owen Davies within sixty seconds and Sam Duffy in stoppage time saw Town claim a huge three points at Halkyn Road It ended a run of six games without a win on the road and marked a first win away at Holywell since 2018

Dewi Llion named a couple of changes to the squad with Sion Jones coming into the XI whilst Harry Lockley returned to the squad from international duty.

He couldn’t have asked for a better start to the game when Alfie Vaughan fed Davies through to slot home within the first minute of the game

It was a fast start from Denbigh who almost doubled the advantage within ten minutes as Davies again had sight of goal but was thwarted by Ryan Woods in the Wellmen goal.

Holywell’s first chance came on 20 minutes when Beau Cornish turned well having had his back to goal but fired narrowly wide of the post The home side grew into the game and seven minutes later Jake Roberts was denied by an impressive Aaron Jones

Despite gaining an advantage when it came to chances, Holywell were still vulnerable and it was almost two when Nathan Brown broke before finding Iwan Roberts, but his effort was well wide.

A flurry of chances followed with Roberts testing Jones once more before Davies had two shots both saved and sail wide of the post. Holywell thought they’d drawn level in stoppage time but Cornish’s effort from range shaved the post

Holywell began the second half as they ended the first with pressure on the Town back line Morgan Murray came close only to see his effort saved by Jones in the opening minute of the re-start

Gareth Evans’ name was up in lights on 56 minutes when he ran through one on one only for Jones again to be the hero before the ‘keeper was called on again two minutes later to put a stop to Jamie Breese.

Despite the onslaught from Holywell Denbigh were still dangerous, and they reminded the hosts of that on the hour mark when Iwan Roberts’ shot was tipped over the bar by Woods Four minutes later Davies should have doubled the advantage when one on one but he lifted his shot over the bar

Duffy, introduced as a double change alongside Billy Holmes on 63 minutes was involved and attempted to find the target with 15 minutes to spare, but couldn’t keep his shot down. Iwan Roberts took advantage of an advancing Holywell to break but his effort was covered by Woods

Denbigh thought they’d sealed it on 90 minutes when Harrison Bellis tucked the ball home but the flag was raised But three minutes later the home side weren’t so fortunate Duffy was slipped through and with conviction sent the ball thudding into the back of the net to seal a huge win for Denbigh.

BRIEF HISTORY: DENBIGH TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB

Denbigh Town Football Club was formed in 1880 and have been one of the longest-serving clubs in North Wales.

The early years saw the club play in a number of leagues including the North Wales Coast and Welsh Senior League, as well as time in the old Combination.

The club rose to fame in the 1920s when during the 1923/24 campaign, it won its first and only national honour, the Welsh Amateur Cup beating Lovell’s Athletic. The club went under different names throughout those years including United and Juniors before settling on Town in the 1950s

Following the Second World War Denbigh clinched numerous honours before the golden period of the 1970s that saw the club dominate the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) winning four successive league titles

After turning to the Clwyd Premier following the departure of successful manager John Trefor Roberts, the club shot back up the ladder upon the appointment of Bill Dawson who took the club from the Clwyd Premier to the Cymru Alliance in just four years

The club remained in the second tier for six years before returning to the Welsh Alliance but under Tim Dyer the club was promoted alongside a Cookson Cup success in 2007.

In 2013/14 the club went unbeaten in the Welsh Alliance earning a third promotion to tier two after their return to the division in 2010. In 2015/16 the club reached it’s second national final and the biggest game in club history when reaching the League Cup Final, losing to professional outfit TNS on national television.

Upon relegation from the Cymru Alliance in 2019, manager Dewi Llion rebuilt his squad and in 2023 earned a league and cup double to move up to the JD Cymru North, finishing 6th in their first season back

DENBIGH BACKS FAIR PLAY CAMPAIGN

Denbigh Town Football Club are supporting the ‘Football Association of Wales Fair Play Campaign’ which will run from Friday the 27 of September to Sunday 6 of October and reinforces the importance of mutual respect on and off the pitch and encourages a reduction in on-field misconduct.

The ‘FAW Fair Play’ Code promotes the important message of ‘Fair Play’ throughout Welsh football, which aims to inspire Players, Clubs, Match Officials and Supporters to maintain good on-field discipline by abiding by the Laws of the Game, in addition to respecting all members of the Welsh Football Family.

To further encourage respectful behaviour that aligns to the ‘FAW Fair Play’ Code, the FAW incentivises and rewards clubs who are taking a proactive role in reducing on-field misconduct.

To achieve this, each month, the FAW publishes National Leagues Fair Play Tables and the Clubs who top their respective Fair Play table at the end of the season are awarded a Fair Play Award and a prize of £1200 that is available to be spent on improving their Club.

Denbigh Town ] will be commemorating the ‘FAW Fair Play’ campaign by displaying ‘FAW Fair Play’ pennants at today’s game against Mold Alexandra

Alex player Joe Allen played for the Wales national team during this period In an exciting 1980’s period for the Alex they won two League Championships, a League Cup and two regional trophies. These successes resulted in Mold Alex being invited to join the newly created Cymru Alliance league for season In 1992 Mold became founder members of the League of Wales, staying in the top flight for three seasons

In 1995 Mold Alex played once more in the Cymru Alliance, but following relegation after three seasons the club had to fight for admission back to the Welsh National League Between 2002 and 2010 the club had two successful spells in the Cymru Alliance, but in 2010 an FAW change to the number of clubs in the Welsh Premier League also affected the size of the Cymru Alliance A restructuring drama resulted in Mold Alex in thirteenth place losing its status as a Cymru Alliance member In 2014 Mold was promoted once more up to the Cymru Alliance after winning the Championship of the WNL Premier Division on a cliff hanging and thrilling final day of the season

With the return of football and restructuring of the Wales’ football system from 2021 and supported by a strong management and coaching team and against very competitive opposition, the Alex became Champions of the Lock Stock Ardal North West before finishing strongly in the JD Cymru North. In 2023/24 Mold were crowned winners of the WBS League Cup

Denbigh Town recently discovered their opponents in the Second Round of the JD Welsh Cup.

Having received a bye in the First Round after finishing in the top eight of the JD Cymru North last term, Denbigh will take on Llangefni Town at Central Park.

The Lock Stock Ardal North-West side will come to LL16 on Saturday October 19th for a 2pm kick-off with both sides battling it out for a place in Round Three.

Denbigh haven’t reached that stage since 2018 when going out to Cymru South side Cambrian & Clydach and will be hoping for a good run in the historic competition

Llangefni have made a fantastic start to the campaign and sit third only behind Porthmadog and Rhyl, with one loss in their opening eight matches

They have already played two matches in the JD Welsh Cup with a 4-0 away win over Llangoed & District of the North Wales Coast Premier Division in the Qualifying Round and a First Round mauling of Anglesey rivals Gaerwen, running out 7-1 winners at Cae Bob Parry

Last Sunday saw Ellen Lawson’s side triumph in their opening game of the Betty Pickering Cup Group

Stage beating Caernarfon Town 3-1 at Central Park. Paige Perkins opened the scoring before a Beth Kell brace secured the three points.

It was a welcome cup win having exited the NEWFA Cup and Welsh Cup to the hands of Pwllheli.

The highlight of recent weeks had to come against rivals Henllan where Town found themselves 3-0 down at the break before rallying in a 4-3 win in the second half to go top of the table early on.
