THE CHAIRMAN

Welcome to Central Park for tonight’s JD Cymru North League game against Gresford.

I’d like to extend a warm Denbigh welcome to all the Gresford players, coaching team, Committee and supporters.

I’m not sure if you remember but last season it took three attempts to get this game on as the weather just kept on beating us Firstly, it was because of a frozen pitch, then Storm Jocelyn’s winds and finally a waterlogged pitch. Tonight, the pitch looks immaculate and the work we’ve carried out on it over the summer has paid dividends A big thanks to Miles & Josh from 360 Groundcare for all the work they do for us on the pitch.

We were pleased as a Committee as to how things ran off the pitch at last Friday’s game against Caersws After some enormous efforts on the part of the building teams we have working at the ground, the ground was declared ready at 5pm that afternoon to accept spectators and players for a 7:45pm kick-off

A couple of days earlier the temporary changing rooms still needed completing and there were open ducts around the ground. It was a building site. On the Friday morning, we laid tarmac across the entrance, walkways and spectator areas and had lots of final touches to complete I’ll admit it was touch and go that we’d be able to host the game. A big thanks to local lads Gary Wayne, Andy Peach, Jason Jones, Tino Rizzi and their teams for all their hard work in getting us to this stage Rob Jones of Lock Stock deserves special mention as he has worked tirelessly to get things in place.

Our Clubhouse is now not only serving beer and soft drinks but also hot and cold food via the kitchen we have installed over the summer Pop in and have a look at what we’ve done

Work will now really start on the new changing rooms, kitchen and function room now that the old building has been cleared and the groundwork is almost complete. The aim is to complete the building by the end of the season Players have complimented us on the temporary changing rooms situated behind the stand. They are of a high quality and once the news ones are installed, these will be sold on. Several Clubs and the FAW have already shown an interest in buying them

It was good to see us get our first three points last week to get us off the mark Another three points tonight would be welcomed after a tough start to the season. We welcome back Gresford’s manager Eddie Maurice Jones to the ground along with his assistant Jonathan Hill Dunt Eddie was our manager in the 2017-18 season when we achieved our highest-ever position in Welsh football by coming runners up to Caernarfon in the Huws Gray Cymru Alliance – the same equivalent as the current JD Cymru NorthTier 2 of Welsh Football. Jon was our keeper that season.

This next week sees the start of the Paralympics in Paris. We were so pleased to hear that our Reserves Coach, Aaron Evans has been nominated to carry the torch for part of its journey into Paris Aaron joined us in the summer and has thoroughly immersed himself into the Club and trust he has a fantastic experience at the Games Well done Aaron

In the meantime, enjoy this evening’s game

THE GAFFER

Welcome to Central Park for this evening’s JD Cymru North game against Gresford Athletic.

It was so good to be back home last Friday night against Caersws and secure a comfortable 2-0 win over the joint leaders at the time After two contrasting previous league losses, we needed to get three points to get our season underway.

I say contrasting as, after the 7-0 drubbing at Airbus in our first game, our Mold performance was just so much better, and we were unlucky to lose 2-1 to a last minute goal. Last week we carried on with another impressive performance against a well-drilled Caersws team The scoreline should have been higher as we missed a host of chances, and this was so similar to what happened at Mold We were creating chances but not putting the ball away It’s an area we’ve worked on and talked about in training this week.

If we weren’t creating those chances it would be an issue as you have to create chances to score goals I’m confident that if we carry on playing the same way goals will follow

We have a squad composed of a lot of youngsters and some more experienced heads The youngsters are providing the speed, flair and confidence to try things out with our more mature players providing encouragement and guile.

As with any season, the early matches have thrown up some interesting results Airbus have made a cracking start, and we know they will be one of the front runners as they still hold a 100% winning record Second place Buckley have also started well and are also undefeated After that every Club has lost at least one game, so it just shows what a competitive league it will be.

Tonight, Eddie Maurice-Jones returns to Central Park as Gresford’s manager. Eddie was good enough to appoint me as one of his coaches during his spell here as manager back in 2017/18 I’m grateful to him for that opportunity His teams have always played good, well-organised football and like us, they secured their first win last weekend in a 4-2 score at Penrhyncoch

We have a full squad available to us to select from this evening. This means there is strong competition in all positions of the team for places in the starting lineup. Dan Parry-Jones returns from holiday and Billy Holmes is also available after missing the Caersws game Both will be in our squad

I’m looking for three points to carry on from where we left off last week.

Thanks for all your support. It is so much appreciated.

POINTS ON THE BOARD IN SUCCESFUL HOME RETURN

Denbigh Town are up and running for the new campaign as Dewi Llion’s side picked up their first win of the season.

Sam Duffy netted on his home debut before skipper Paul Fleming added a second whilst returning goalkeeper Aaron Jones kept his first clean sheet of the new campaign

Duffy, along with Keelan Williams, Iwan Roberts and Calum Butler all made their home debuts whilst goalkeeper Jones returned to the side.

Town opened proceedings on the front foot with the first chance coming within three minutes. Owen Davies did well to nudge his way into the box before laying the ball to Roberts, and his effort deflected wide for a corner

Within the opening quarter of an hour Denbigh had a well deserved lead This time it was Roberts who rolled the ball to Duffy on the right of the box, he got the ball out of his feet before slamming it into the bottom corner. A fitting introduction to the home support.

Four minutes later it was almost two when Duffy turned provider for Nathan Brown who’s unorthodox effort was superbly saved by Caersws keeper Steffan Jones

Just before the half hour mark the visitors had their first effort of the game, as Craig Harris made progress down the middle before firing inches wide of the far post

Denbigh responded immediately carving out a chance of their own but Owen Davies who picked up a loose ball before making inroads into the box could only fire over

Two more chances fell to Town before the break, the first coming from a Williams low cross from the right that Davies ran on to but couldn’t find the target

I The second came as Roberts fed it to Brown from the left but the latter couldn’t find the target with a curling effort. and lay it to Williams but the ball flashed past the post.

It was more of the same in the second half with Denbigh coming close within five minutes Brown jinked down the left before cutting inside and warping the ball just wide of the far post

On 55 minutes Town were given a glorious chance at a second when a cross into the box struck a Caersws hand and the referee pointed to the spot Davies stepped up but the penalty was saved well.

Not deterred, Denbigh continued to turn the screw and won a free-kick 30-yards out, Brown stepped up and crashed the ball against the left post before it trickled across goal and away

Finally, the deserved lead was doubled Brown’s cross from the left found Fleming who crashed through a sea of bodies to bundle home

It was now or never for the visitors and their best chance came when a ball from the left flank was latched on to by Sam Phillips, but Jones made a brilliant stop to deny Davies, frustrated all evening had a chance to put it to bed but again was unable to find the target one on one.

Denbigh saw the game out well and picked up their first points of the campaign

BRIEF HISTORY: DENBIGH TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB

Denbigh Town Football Club was formed in 1880 and have been one of the longest-serving clubs in North Wales.

The early years saw the club play in a number of leagues including the North Wales Coast and Welsh Senior League, as well as time in the old Combination.

The club rose to fame in the 1920s when during the 1923/24 campaign, it won its first and only national honour, the Welsh Amateur Cup beating Lovell’s Athletic. The club went under different names throughout those years including United and Juniors before settling on Town in the 1950s

Following the Second World War Denbigh clinched numerous honours before the golden period of the 1970s that saw the club dominate the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) winning four successive league titles

After turning to the Clwyd Premier following the departure of successful manager John Trefor Roberts, the club shot back up the ladder upon the appointment of Bill Dawson who took the club from the Clwyd Premier to the Cymru Alliance in just four years

The club remained in the second tier for six years before returning to the Welsh Alliance but under Tim Dyer the club was promoted alongside a Cookson Cup success in 2007.

In 2013/14 the club went unbeaten in the Welsh Alliance earning a third promotion to tier two after their return to the division in 2010. In 2015/16 the club reached it’s second national final and the biggest game in club history when reaching the League Cup Final, losing to professional outfit TNS on national television.

Upon relegation from the Cymru Alliance in 2019, manager Dewi Llion rebuilt his squad and in 2023 earned a league and cup double to move up to the JD Cymru North, finishing 6th in their first season back

Manager Dewi Llion has been busy this week with the addition of two new players to bolster the ranks.

Mackenzie Stark and Alfie Vaughan have both joined the club this week and add real quality to the side

Stark, 19, began his career with Chester FC before a brief spell with Burscough in the North West Counties Premier He moved on to Irlam at the beginning of 2024. At Silver Street he helped the side to a mid-table finish in the second half of 2023/24 as he made regular appearances

He began this season with Irlam, most notably making an appearance as a substitute goalkeeper after Elliott Wynne was forced off injured on 24 minutes. His 66-minute stint between the sticks came away at Bury’s Gigg Lane in front of a crowd of 2,947 and ended 2-2.

After appearing three times so far this season he crosses the border to join Denbigh Town.

Meanwhile, Vaughan [pictured], also 19, joins the club from Prestatyn Town where he has impressed as one of the best young players in the JD Cymru North

Vaughan came through the ranks at Connah’s Quay Nomads’ Academy before joining St Asaph City in the summer of 2023

With the Saints he made his senior footballing debut as a substitute against Llanefydd in August 2023 before his second appearance, again off the bench, saw him score his first goal and grab an assist in a 24 minute cameo against Conwy Borough.

He went on to score five goals in 17 appearances at Roe Plas Meadow before signing for Prestatyn in January 2024.

He made his debut in the JD Cymru North at home to Porthmadog scoring twice and providing an assist in a 3-2 win at Bastion Gardens He made 11 appearances in total last season before making a further three this term before switching to Central Park.

The history of the present-day Gresford Athletic stretches back to 1946, although it is known that the club existed in the 1920s

Gresford Athletic won the Welsh National League East Division in the 1946/47 season. The next time the club won a league trophy was in 1962/63, when they won the Welsh National League Division Two The club remained in the Welsh National League until the introduction of the Cymru Alliance in the 1990/91 season, when they became one of the founder members of the league and spent four seasons

Upon the re-structure of football in Wales, they reentered the Welsh National League Premier in the 2010/11 season following nine seasons in the Cymru Alliance

A 24-match unbeaten run saw them maintain a control on the league in 2014/15, whilst also seeing a successful run in the Welsh Cup, FAW Trophy and Welsh National League Premier Division Cup competitions and it was January before they finally lost a game However, the Welsh National League Premier title was not clinched until the final game of the season, by which time the work had been completed behind the scenes, with promotion to the Cymru Alliance having already been confirmed

O FACE THE RS

Following last Friday’s first victory of the season against Caersws, Denbigh Town will be looking for back-to-back wins this evening.

Dewi Llion’s side put in a stellar performance against earl in-form side Caersws with goals from Sam Duffy on his home debut and skipper Paul Fleming

Now they take on a Gresford Athletic side who’ve had a mixed start, finally winning their first game of the campaign last Saturday away to Penrhyncoch. Haci Ozlu, Charley Edge and Charlie Mann were all on the scoresheet in the 4-2 away win at Cae Baker.

It has followed on from an opening day draw with local rivals Llay Miners Welfare in which Edge netted a 98th-minute leveller at the Rock However, that late point’s momentum couldn’t be carried forward in the league with back-to-back losses to Buckley Town and Flint Mountain

The last time Gresford came to Central Park the Colliers stunned Town in a 5-2 victory Denbigh led twice through Josh Lock and Owen Davies before a quick-fire double came within six minutes of each other before hitting the fourth and fifth in stoppage time.

It was a different story at the Rock, as we travel to next week in the WBS League Cup, where Tom Weir’s 90th minute strike sealed a 2-1 win for Denbigh Town will be looking for their first home win over Gresford since April 2018 where goals from Matthew Worrall, Andrew Swarbrick and Gareth Partridge secured a 3-0 success. Gresford have won each of the three subsequent matches at LL16

With points on the board it’s set to be a fascinating clash between the two sides this evening

THE 100 CLUB

Sion Jones is just one appearance away from making 150 in a Denbigh Town shirt.

The 23-year-old has over 100 league games for Town and could pass another milestone today.

Billy Holmes is just three games away from the same feat. Skipper Paul Fleming rounds up the three players who’ve marked a century of appearances for Denbigh.

Meanwhile the 100 club could be joined by four more players this season with Keiron Roberts just eight games away and followed shortly behind by Aaron Jones, Nathan Brown and Dan Parry-Jones
