Chairman’s Notes
Welcome to Central Park this evening for the JD Cymru North League game against Buckley.
I’d like to extend a warm Denbigh welcome to all the Buckley players, coaching team, Commi ee and supporters.
I’ve been away for a few weeks which has corresponded with an excellent run of wins for the First Team. Four wins on the run and I’ve missed them all. Hope I’m no jinx as we want to see them con nuing with winning ways this season, a er a tough start to the League season.
We’ve seen some excellent a endances recently at Central Park with Friday evening games proving popular for both the First Team and Reserves fixtures.
Our game against Airbus a racted an a endance of 352 and was the highest for our league that weekend. The Reserves had 156 here last Friday for their game against Holywell. The Ladies play on Sunday a ernoons and 115 came to see their first league game of the season here against Flint Ladies. It all shows that football in the Town is on the up and this is also evidenced by the success of our Junior Teams with numbers of children wan ng to play for local Junior teams also significantly on the increase. The Junior Leagues started last weekend and its brilliant to see so many children playing on the Rec on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The Junior team achieved Pla num Accredita on status by the FAW earlier in the year and it’s a sec on of the Club that’s going from strength to strength. Credit has to be given to their Commi ee , Managers & Coaches for all their hard work.
Whilst Dewi will comment on the First Team situa on I’d like to men on the Reserves and Ladies.
Reserves manager Liam Nash has gathered together a squad with a mixture of youth and experience and so far, is undefeated in the FAW Reserves League North. Reserve Teams from Tiers 1 & 2 of North Wales football make up the League in what is recognised as a really strong league. Some of Liam’s youngsters have already shined and been given first team ac on. 20 year old Ollie Hansen has now become a regular starter. Rhys Lloyd was playing with our Under 16s last season and has had a couple of sub’s appearances as has 16 year old Owen Herbert who joined us from Connahs Quay Nomads in the summer. 19 year old James Thomas came on as sub last week in the 4-2 win at Cerrig. Their next fixture is on Saturday 30th September here at Central Park so if you can come down and give them your support it would be appreciated.
The Ladies season started a fortnight ago when Ellen Lawson’s team went down 6-3 to Flint Ladies in a thrilling game here at Central Park. The Ladies now have a regular set of followers and entertain Welshpool here this Sunday a ernoon (24th September ) with a 2.00pm kick off. Come along and give them your support.
Let’s now focus on tonight’s game. Here’s looking to the lads ge ng another three points.
C’mon Denbigh!

Office Manager’s Notes
Welcome to Central Park for this evening’s JD Cymru North League game against Buckley.
We’ve already played each other twice already this season both at the Globe with us going down 3-0 in early August in the Nathaniel Cup and then us bea ng them 6-2 at the start of the month in the Welsh Blood Service League Cup.
The first game was played in extremely wet condi ons and with us drawing 0-0 at half me we felt we were in with a shout to win the e. However, as weather condi ons deteriorated Buckley won a penalty and shortly a er doubled their lead. We were chasing the game as they added a third.
It was a complete turnaround a few weeks later with Josh Lock nabbing a hat-trick on his full debut along with Tom Weir (2) and Ollie Hansen adding to the scoresheet. Once again though it was 0-0 at half me in a game played in sweltering condi ons.
The first Buckley game saw Billy Holmes come off injured and it has taken longer than expected for him to return to the fold. A er a run out with the Reserves he played the full 90 minutes at Cerrigydrudion last week in the Welsh Cup and look back to full sharpness.
That cup e was some game. Cerrig came out from the start determined to cause an upset on a really narrow pitch. With a good local crowd behind them, they caused us problems with us going in at half me 1-1 thanks to Ma y Worrall scoring off Ollie Hansen’s cross. Just before half me we went down to ten men with Ryan Kershaw being sent off for a late challenge. So, at half me we had a frank and honest talk on how to play the second half. Fair play to the lads we took control of the game with the maturing Ollie Hansen scoring early on and then winning a penalty which Nay Brown put home. With Nay ge ng a second to make it 4-1 we sat back a li le and allowed them to score another and they were pushing us towards the end. Thankfully we’re in the hat for the next round.
Before the recent Wales v South Korea game at Cardiff , I was invited down by the FAW to collect the Fair Play trophy for last season’s Lockstock Ardal North League which we won having collected the fewest yellow and red cards of the league. It was great to be recognised by the FAW in this way.
This season we’ve collected too many red and yellow cards and discipline is something we really are now looking to address within the squad. I know how much losing players to suspension during the season can hamper our results, as when we were relegated a few seasons ago, our discipline was poor that season and was one contribu ng factor in our relega on.
With us back to League ac on tonight, I’m looking for us to con nue our excellent run of recent form as we have won four in a row. The Airbus 2-0 win was special . especially the second half, when we dominated the game against the then undefeated league leaders. We played our best football of the season so far in those 45 minutes and it’s something we want to build on.
Buckley no doubt, will be out for revenge a er the last game so it’s got the ingredients for a great encounter.
Enjoy the game

10 MAN TOWN AVOID AN UPSET
CERRIGYDRUDION 2 4 DENBIGH TOWN FC
Denbigh Town avoided a big upset at Cerrig in the First Round of the JD Welsh Cup with a 4-2 victory.
Goals from Matthew Worrall, Olly Hansen and a Nathan Brown brace sealed the victory on a wet afternoon in Conwy.
Manager Dewi Llion made five changes to the starting XI with Billy Holmes, Craig Rogers, Jake Walker, Olly Hansen and Paul Fleming coming into the side whilst James Thomas was called onto the bench less than 24 hours after playing and scoring for the reserves.
The game began with Cerrig on top with a physical display that took the match right to Denbigh. Cerrig had a free-kick on seven minutes which was spilt by Aaron Jones before he made a superb save to deny a follow-up.
Denbigh’s first foray into the opposition half saw the first score on 14 minutes, when Hansen did well down the left before his cross met the head of Worrall, despite Cerrig claiming it had been cleared off the line the linesman flagged and the goal was awarded.
Not to be disheartened the hosts fought back and Tomos Jones almost levelled three minutes later with a shot from distance that struck the post with the keeper stranded.
On 34 minutes Cerrig had a shock leveller, as a cross came in from the right that was met by Tegid Williams who’s header looped into the far corner.
Just before half-time things boiled over for the first time and Town were down to ten, as Ryan Kershaw’s late challenge saw him dismissed before the break.
Half-Time: Cerrigydrudion 1-1 Denbigh Town
Stern words at the break appeared to work for Denbigh as within three minutes of the re-start they had the lead. Hansen latched on to a long ball from Walker and finished with aplomb to settle the early nerves.
The half was limited in terms of chances but certainly not bereft of competition in what was a classic spirited cup tie. Going into the final 15 minutes Ben Lockley headed over from a corner which appeared to light the fuse on a big finish.
Hansen picked the ball up on the right before being brought down in the box and winning a penalty. Substitute Brown stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to give Denbigh breathing room.
Brown almost had a second with five to go as he fizzed a shot across the face of goal but made no mistake a minute later as Worrall fed him from the right before drilling it home.
If at 4-1 you thought the tie was over you’d be mistaken, Cai Davies less than 60 seconds later nodded Cerrig back into it setting up a nervy finish that saw over ten minutes of stoppage time.
The game well and truly boiled over when a skirmish on the touchline led to bookings for both benches before another broke out seconds later that saw Williams sent off for Cerrig.
With an aerial bombardment from the home side Town survived and will go into the hat for the next round.

Brief History
Denbigh Town Football Club was formed in 1880 and has remained one of the most popular and highly respected Clubs in North Wales ever since. One of the Club’s finest achievements came in 1924 when they won both the Welsh Amateur Cup and the North Wales Coast Amateur Cup.
A number of minor successes ensued in the subsequent decades until the Club hit a purple patch in the 1970s when they won the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) Division One Championship four times and the League Cup on five occasions. Town also landed the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1970 and the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1972. The manager through most of this golden period was John Trevor Roberts who remains one of Denbigh Town’s most legendary figures.
After the Club left the Wrexham Area League at the turn of the 1980s and joined the Clwyd League many trophy less years followed. The sleeping giant did not awaken until the 1991/1992 season when Liverpudlian duo Bill Dawson and Rook Cook-Hannah took over the reins at the Club.
In their first season the Club won promotion to the Premier Division, but the biggest highlight was an unforgettable 1-0 North Wales Challenge Cup Victory over the 4th placed HFS Loans League semiprofessionals of Caernarfon Town before an ecstatic crowd at Central Park.
After two seasons in the Clwyd Premier, the Club was promoted to the Fitlock Welsh Alliance League in 1994/95. After finishing 4th in their first season Denbigh Town followed up in style by landing the League Championship and Cookson Cup double, the Club’s finest achievement for almost 20 years. The Club joined the Cymru Alliance in 1996/97 and enjoyed several good seasons at that level.
Denbigh joined the Welsh Alliance Leagie for 2002/2003 and finished 3rd, reached the semi-final of the Barritt Cup and won the Alves Cup with Roy Cook-Hannah at the helm. Cook- Hannah resigned in December 2003 and Clwyd Williams & Nick Hailes were installed as joint-managers. The team finished the season in 12th position.
In May 2004 Tim Dyer was appointed manager and in 2005/2006 he guided the team to the Barritt Cup and Cookson Cup double, runners up in the Welsh Alliance League and also finalists in the North Wales Coast FA Challenge Cup. The Club also won the Welsh Alliance Fair Play League for 2005/2006 & 2006/2007. In 2007 Denbigh Town were crowned Welsh Alliance League Champions and Cookson Cup winners.
After Tim Dyer stepped down at the end of the 2008/2009 season Steve Jones was appointed manager with Dean Martin as his assistant. Under the new regime the team finished 10th in the 2009/2010 Cymru Alliance League. Unfortunately, due to the Welsh Premier Super 12, six clubs were relegated from the Welsh Premier and the 3 feeder leagues all promoted a club to the Cymru Alliance. This meant only the top 7 survived in the Cymru Alliance and so Denbigh Town were relegated to the Welsh Alliance League. Jones and his assistant Martin resigned in May 2010.
John James and Andy Lewis were appointed manager and coach for the 2010/2011 season.
Despite relegation the Club started ground development with hard standing area placed all around the perimeter of the ground and floodlights were installed in April 2012.
In 2012/2013 ex-player and captain Richard Williams- Cooke was appointed manager. In his first season Cookie took the club to runners up position in the Welsh Alliance League. The following season the Club won the league, remaining unbeaten throughout the whole league campaign and also won the Mawddach Cup. The Club were promoted to the Cymru Alliance – the Tier 2 level of Welsh football
Cookie resigned in June 2014 due to work and family commitments. A joint management team of Dave Taylor and Terry Ingram were appointed in his place, but they parted company with club a few months later. In September 2014 the Club appointed Elfed Lloyd and 1st team Captain Max Peate as caretaker managers for the rest of that season.
Gareth Thomas (Perry) was appointed manager on 21st May 2015, and he led the Club to 3rd position in the Cymru Alliance in season 2015/2016. In the same season Perry also took the Club to the Word Cup Final losing 2-0 to treble winners The New Saints (TNS).
However, in November 2016 the Club parted company with Perry and Eddie Maurice Jones was appointed manager
Maurice-Jones took the Club to its highest ever finish in the Cymru Alliance – that of 2nd in the season 2017/2018. However, at the end of that season Maurice-Jones moved to become manager of Rhyl and many of the players followed him.
New joint managers Dewi Llion Jones & Matty Jones had the task of forming a team with new players with only a few weeks left before the start of the season. Despite a valiant effort by the managers and their new team the Club fell into the relegation zone on the last day of the season 2018/2019 and were relegated to the Welsh Alliance.
Matty Jones left the joint managership role in April 2019 and Dewi Llion Jones was appointed sole manager for the season 2019/2020. He appointed former Town player Owain Roberts as his coach. A strong season followed but the Covid 19 pandemic meant the season was cut short and Denbigh were appointed runners up in the league to Holyhead Hotspurs.
The Welsh Alliance League finished in 2019/2020 and Denbigh Town were placed in the new Lock Stock Ardal North West League for the season 2021/22.
The club narrowly missed out on the promotion spots in the season 2021/2022 finishing third.
History
Football arrived in Buckley around 1860, complete with ‘jumpers for goalposts’ because the Lord of the Manor forbade permanent wooden posts on The Common. The first ‘official’ club was the ‘Belmont Swi s Football Club’, then came the ‘Buckley Victoria Football Club’, which in turn morphed into ‘Buckley Engineers’ whose most famous team of ten colliers and one plumber picked up an impressive haul of silverware, including winning the Welsh Amateur Cup on three occasions.
In 1887 ‘Buckley Football Club’ appeared and con nued the town’s tradi on of success, winning amongst other things, a double of the Wirral & District League and Pike Challenge Cup in 1898.
Buckley con nued to play right up to the 1920s, and in 1925 joined the Welsh League, NorthDivision. A er a fallow period, in 1937 Buckley Town A.F.C won the North Wales Amateur Cup but by 1949 Buckley Wanderers & Buckley Rovers were the teams playing football in Buckley, with Rovers in the Welsh Leagues and Buckley Wanderers in the Welsh Na onal League Division One. A er a couple of runners-up finishes, in the 55/56 season, Buckley Wanderers secured the League tle, scoring over one hundred goals along the way.
For season 60/61, Buckley Wanderers were joined in Division One by Rovers. Wanderers grabbed yet another runners -up spot but Rovers had a tougher me, finishing ninth. Having been relegated in the 63/64 season, and bouncing straight back up, the early seven es saw Rovers in the ascendancy, with a runner-up and third-place finish. The 197677 season saw a turning point a er both teams had finished in the bo om half, and in 1977 Rovers & Wanderers joined forces to become Buckley Football Club.
Finishing as runners-up in the Welsh Na onal Premier Division in season 92/93, Buckley Town were elected to the Cymru Alliance League, the second er of football in Wales. The club moved to a new purpose-built facility at Globe Way, and the nough es proved to be a hugely successful period, with the Club winning the NEWFA Challenge Cup seven mes, the Cymru Alliance League Cup in 03/04 and ul mately being crowned Champions in 04/05.
