Chairman’s Notes
Welcome to Central Park for this evening’s JD Cymru North League game against Chirk AAA.
I’d like to extend a warm Denbigh welcome to all the Chirk players, coaching team, Commi ee and supporters. As we move into the la er stages of the season, I’d like to spend some me talking of the work and contribu ons to the Club by the management teams of our three senior teams.
Running any squad is no easy job and every week issues arise and have to be dealt with swi ly and fairly . At the same me the focus has to be on the squad itself and the effect any upheaval , changes or performances can have on the team. All three managers we have on board have all displayed some great management skills throughout the season and I’m sure they’ll tell you there’s a new learning experience each week. Along with their coaches I believe we have a strong set up within our three senior teams.
Dewi together with his coaches Ma and Bre and un l recently KP have excelled themselves this season with the progress the team has made in the JD Cymru North. We all knew it was going to be tough and yet, by a lot of hard work and some great signings they should achieve a top six posi on by the end of the season. They’ve set up a definite game strategy for each game by some detailed planning and this has paid dividends in the progress they have made.
28 year old Liam Nash is in his first season in a managerial role and has put together a squad of local lads who play with their hearts for him and the Town. Last weekend they beat Airbus Reserves to move into third posi on in the FAW Reserves League North behind TNS and Connahs Quay Nomads - a brilliant feat in itself.
Accompanied by his coaches Sion Jones and Al Griffiths they have developed into a well drilled squad and have been a great help to the 1st team who invariably have to call on Liam’s players at short no ce.
Ellen Lawson and Aled Davies Ladies’s squad have moved up to third in the North Wales Women’s League and have a very good chance of ge ng the runners up posi on. Flint Ladies are 10 points ahead of Denbigh and Kinmel Bay, who are ba ling it out for second place. This season the Ladies have been helped by some new signings joining the team which has given extra strong compe on for places. Ellen and Aled make up a great team themselves and with years of experience behind them this has been invaluable to the whole Ladies set up. The Club are extremely fortunate to have all these managers and coaches on board. With their input, the Club is moving forward both on and off the field. The added bonus is the extremely strong Junior set up we have at the Club. To see the Juniors awarded Pla num Accredita on status by the FAW last season was amazing a er just scraping a Bronze award a few seasons ago. We are hoping their work will be recognised by a similar award this season.
Enough from me – let’s look forward to the match itself. Having spoken with Dewi earlier in the week, I know he is aiming for three points tonight.
Enjoy the game.

Manager’s Notes
Welcome to Central Park for this evening’s Cymru North league game against Chirk AAA.
Last Saturday we played the League leaders Airbus at Broughton and went down 3-1. Despite the scoreline, we as a management team were extremely pleased on how we played as a team. We had beaten Airbus 2-0 here at Central Park back in September and it was no ceable how Airbus had changed their game set up plan for last weekend’s game as compared to that first game. Nevertheless, we coped well with this and were in the game for the whole 90 minutes.
We equalised Airbus’ lead with Owen Davies taking his goal well by scoring from the ghtest of angles. If there is a cri cism of the game, we conceded a second goal just a minute later and were always chasing the game a er this. Whilst there were some outstanding performances from some individuals, it was the whole team performance and team ethic that pleased us.
The performance just shows how far we have come as a squad in that we were a good match for the league leaders who were playing in the JD Cymru Premier (Tier 1 ) last season whereas we were in the Lock Stock Ardal North West League (Tier 3).
Sion Jones reached the milestone of having played 100 league games for the 1st team at Airbus. This really is quite an accomplishment for 22year old Sion who has been a key part of my teams over the last few seasons. He has an abundance of talent and energy who has proved himself to be so versa le in that he can drop into a variety of posi ons when called upon. He’s the sort of player that every manager wants in his team. Dal a Sion.
This evening we face Chirk and are favourites on paper to take the three points with Chirk at the base of the league table. However, we are not taking anything for granted. We’ve played Chirk twice already this season , both mes at Chirk . We scraped a 1-0 win back in July in the Nathaniel Cup and then beat them by another close margin in a 1-0 in the League. Both games emphasised the fact that we need to persevere against them to make the breakthrough and this is something we’ll be looking for from our lads this month.
Nay Brown is unavailable tonight as he serves the second game in his three match suspension . Ma hew Worrall will have a late fitness test a er damaging his ankle in the Prestatyn game and then playing on it against Airbus. Paul Fleming returns to the squad. Everyone else is available for selec on.
Our last game here at Central Park was a crazy one. Five goals in the opening 25 minutes to give us a 3-2 lead only for Prestatyn to keep pressing us and then equalising in the 50th minute. Thankfully Owen Davies scored shortly a er to give us a lead which we held onto, but we were hanging on at the end as the visitors put great pressure on our defence. I think us scoring two early goals caused us to relax too much and Prestatyn were able to get back into the game. We’ve discussed this at training and its something for us to avoid in future games.
Thanks for your support this evening . We so enjoy playing on Friday nights under the lights. The atmosphere around the ground is great and the lads really do appreciate it. We’d also like to say a special thanks to all the supporters to travel to our away game and make themselves heard in numbers.
Enjoy the game

Denbigh Town v Chirk
Back under the lights at Central Park
From top of the league to the bottom Denbigh Town face basement side Chirk AAA on Friday night in another key clash in the JD Cymru North.
Town saw their unbeaten league run come to an end against top-of-the-league Airbus and will look to correct course against a side desperate for points.
Form
Denbigh come into this one on the back of a strong performance at league leaders Airbus UK Broughton, though they returned to LL16 without anything to show for it.
The Wingmakers took the lead before Owen Davies made it four goals in four with a first half leveller. However, it lasted just a minute as Airbus took the lead before extending it in the second half to run out 3-1 winners. Town’s last home match was a seven goal thriller against Prestatyn Town which saw goals from Matthew Worrall (brace), Ben Lockley and Davies net in a 4-3 success.
Chirk sit bottom of the JD Cymru North and are without a win in the league since August. They’ve lost their last eight games with their last win in any competition coming in the JD Welsh Cup in September against Ardal North-West side Penrhyncoch. They last picked up a point in December in a 2-2 draw with Guilsfield and lost 4-1 at home to Mold Alexandra last time out.
Head-to-Head
This will be the third meeting between the two sides this season having met in both the league and Nathaniel MG Cup back in the summer. The first clash came in July in the cup with Town running out 1-0 winners, whilst in August in the league it ended by the same scoreline. Both goal scorers in those games have now departed Central Park so a new man will need to step up for Town on Friday if Denbigh are to find success.
Chirk’s last league win over Denbigh came over 25 years ago in November 1997, where despite goals from John Jones, Rich Williams-Cooke and Derry Morris, Town fell to a 4-3 loss in Chirk. They haven’t won a league game at Central Park in over half a century.
Stat Pack
Forward Matthew Worrall could make his 50th appearance for Denbigh Town in all competitions.
Paul Fleming could make his 75th league appearance for Denbigh Town.
Morgan Thomas-Sadler could make his 25th Denbigh Town appearance in all competitions.
Owen Davies is looking to be the first player to score in five consecutive Denbigh Town league matches since Matthew Worrall in January-March 2023. Worrall scored 10 goals in the space of six matches.
Davies would be just the fourth player to achieve a goal in five matches in a row in the Cymru North/Alliance for Denbigh, alongside Kristian Pierce (2015), Alan Bull (2016, seven consecutive games) and Tom Mutton (1998).
Keep Up
You can keep up to date with all the action via the club’s social media channels including live text commentary via our X page (FKA Twitter) page and match report on the club website post-match. For live updates as they happen follow Denbigh Town on the Cymru Football App.
REPORT | Airbus UK Broughton 3-1 Denbigh Town
Town fall to league leaders
Denbigh Town returned from league leaders Airbus' Airfield with nothing to show for their efforts despite a battling display on Saturday.
Owen Davies netted once again to level things up in the first half but the Flintshire leaders were too strong on a positive afternoon for Town.
Manager Dewi Llion named one change to the side that beat Prestatyn Town at Central Park five days previous with Olly Hansen coming in for Kyle Cooper. Meanwhile, Sion Jones started the match making his 100th league appearance in the process.
As 5th met 1st it was the visiting Town who carved out the first chance when Hansen sent a testing effort from distance towards goal but the goalkeeper was equal to the smart move. Denbigh looked dangerous and on 12 minutes Josh Lock crossed for Ben Lockley who at the back post couldn't get enough purchase on his header to see it over the line.
Airbus custodian Mitchell Jones was soon called into action again on 21 minutes when Lock cut in from the right and took aim on his left, but Jones was able to parry the ball to safety.
Following the Town pressure Airbus composed themselves and found themselves in front. Craig Lindfield first drew Aaron Jones into a stop before the James Davies rebound was also denied, but it fell kindly to Kayden Cooke who was able to tap home.
Goals didn't often look far away in this one and on 31 minutes Denbigh had a deserved leveler. A mistake at the back saw Davies win the ball in the box before touching home at the tightest of tight angles. The TNS loanee clearly enjoying life with Denbigh as he made it four goals in his last four matches.
However, parity lasted less than a minute. Goalscorer Cooke did well on the right before feeding it inside to Lindfield who lofted the ball over Jones to restore the hosts' lead.
Town again almost drew level with five minutes to play of the half when Davies' effort from range skimmed the top of the crossbar.
Half-Time: Airbus UK Broughton 2-1 Denbigh Town
The home side almost extended their lead within five minutes of the restart as Joe Palmer's piledriver was tipped over by Jones. Ten minutes later the Wingmakers wouldn't be denied. A free kick came in from Lindfield and deflected home with just under an hour to go to double the league leaders' advantage.
Denbigh almost pegged the score back immediately when Lock broke down the right and crossed for Matthew Worrall who's header glanced inches wide. Worrall almost found the net on 74 minutes when a superb touch found space before hitting the target, but the keeper was equal to it.
In the final stages neither side could find the net and Town's unbeaten run came to an end, but will take heart from their showing as they go from one end of the table to the other, facing bottom side Chirk AAA on Friday at Central Park.

#HERGAMETOO | League Dedicates Weekend to #HerGameToo
Town join with FAW Campaign
This weekend’s Genero Adran Leagues and JD Cymru Leagues matches will be dedicated to Her Game Too Cymru in celebration of International Women’s Day (Friday 8 – Sunday 10 March).
International Women's Day (IWD) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. Marked annually on 8 March, IWD celebrates women's achievements, educates and raises awareness for women's equality, calls for positive change advancing women and marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
The IWD 2024 campaign theme is Inspire Inclusion. The IWD campaign details, “When we inspire others to understand and value women's inclusion, we forge a better world. When women themselves are inspired to be included, there's a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment.”
Her Game Too Cymru forged a significant partnership with the Football Association of Wales’ Genero Adran Leagues and JD Cymru Leagues at the start of the 2023/24 season.
The partnership signifies a united effort to promote inclusivity and equality in Welsh Football, making strides towards a more diverse and welcoming sport for all.
Roopa Vyas, Director and Founder of Her Game Too Cymru, said: "The dedicated fixture weekend is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of sexism in football.
“Our partnership with the leagues in September 2023 marked a historic moment as the first national leagues collaboration for Her Game Too, and this initiative underscores our commitment to fostering inclusivity and equality in the sport."
Jack Sharp, FAW Head of Domestic Leagues, said: “We are very proud to be the first national leagues partnered with Her Game Too as we continue to create a Welsh football environment where all fans, players and staff feel respected, supported and visible.
“Our Her Game Too weekend will provide clubs with the opportunity to showcase their women role models and further engage with their fanbases while allowing the important campaign to have an impact across the country.
“We look forward to providing Her Game Too with a platform at key events in our domestic calendar over the next few months.”

Brief History
Denbigh Town Football Club was formed in 1880 and has remained one of the most popular and highly respected Clubs in North Wales ever since. One of the Club’s finest achievements came in 1924 when they won both the Welsh Amateur Cup and the North Wales Coast Amateur Cup.
A number of minor successes ensued in the subsequent decades until the Club hit a purple patch in the 1970s when they won the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) Division One Championship four times and the League Cup on five occasions. Town also landed the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1970 and the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1972. The manager through most of this golden period was John Trevor Roberts who remains one of Denbigh Town’s most legendary figures.
After the Club left the Wrexham Area League at the turn of the 1980s and joined the Clwyd League many trophy less years followed. The sleeping giant did not awaken until the 1991/1992 season when Liverpudlian duo Bill Dawson and Rook Cook-Hannah took over the reins at the Club.
In their first season the Club won promotion to the Premier Division, but the biggest highlight was an unforgettable 1-0 North Wales Challenge Cup Victory over the 4th placed HFS Loans League semiprofessionals of Caernarfon Town before an ecstatic crowd at Central Park.
After two seasons in the Clwyd Premier, the Club was promoted to the Fitlock Welsh Alliance League in 1994/95. After finishing 4th in their first season Denbigh Town followed up in style by landing the League Championship and Cookson Cup double, the Club’s finest achievement for almost 20 years. The Club joined the Cymru Alliance in 1996/97 and enjoyed several good seasons at that level.
Denbigh joined the Welsh Alliance Leagie for 2002/2003 and finished 3rd, reached the semi-final of the Barritt Cup and won the Alves Cup with Roy Cook-Hannah at the helm. Cook- Hannah resigned in December 2003 and Clwyd Williams & Nick Hailes were installed as joint-managers. The team finished the season in 12th position.
In May 2004 Tim Dyer was appointed manager and in 2005/2006 he guided the team to the Barritt Cup and Cookson Cup double, runners up in the Welsh Alliance League and also finalists in the North Wales Coast FA Challenge Cup. The Club also won the Welsh Alliance Fair Play League for 2005/2006 & 2006/2007. In 2007 Denbigh Town were crowned Welsh Alliance League Champions and Cookson Cup winners.
After Tim Dyer stepped down at the end of the 2008/2009 season Steve Jones was appointed manager with Dean Martin as his assistant. Under the new regime the team finished 10th in the 2009/2010 Cymru Alliance League. Unfortunately, due to the Welsh Premier Super 12, six clubs were relegated from the Welsh Premier and the 3 feeder leagues all promoted a club to the Cymru Alliance. This meant only the top 7 survived in the Cymru Alliance and so Denbigh Town were relegated to the Welsh Alliance League. Jones and his assistant Martin resigned in May 2010.
John James and Andy Lewis were appointed manager and coach for the 2010/2011 season.
Despite relegation the Club started ground development with hard standing area placed all around the perimeter of the ground and floodlights were installed in April 2012.
In 2012/2013 ex-player and captain Richard Williams- Cooke was appointed manager. In his first season Cookie took the club to runners up position in the Welsh Alliance League. The following season the Club won the league, remaining unbeaten throughout the whole league campaign and also won the Mawddach Cup. The Club were promoted to the Cymru Alliance – the Tier 2 level of Welsh football
Cookie resigned in June 2014 due to work and family commitments. A joint management team of Dave Taylor and Terry Ingram were appointed in his place, but they parted company with club a few months later. In September 2014 the Club appointed Elfed Lloyd and 1st team Captain Max Peate as caretaker managers for the rest of that season.
Gareth Thomas (Perry) was appointed manager on 21st May 2015, and he led the Club to 3rd position in the Cymru Alliance in season 2015/2016. In the same season Perry also took the Club to the Word Cup Final losing 2-0 to treble winners The New Saints (TNS).
However, in November 2016 the Club parted company with Perry and Eddie Maurice Jones was appointed manager
Maurice-Jones took the Club to its highest ever finish in the Cymru Alliance – that of 2nd in the season 2017/2018. However, at the end of that season Maurice-Jones moved to become manager of Rhyl and many of the players followed him.
New joint managers Dewi Llion Jones & Matty Jones had the task of forming a team with new players with only a few weeks left before the start of the season. Despite a valiant effort by the managers and their new team the Club fell into the relegation zone on the last day of the season 2018/2019 and were relegated to the Welsh Alliance.
Matty Jones left the joint managership role in April 2019 and Dewi Llion Jones was appointed sole manager for the season 2019/2020. He appointed former Town player Owain Roberts as his coach. A strong season followed but the Covid 19 pandemic meant the season was cut short and Denbigh were appointed runners up in the league to Holyhead Hotspurs.
The Welsh Alliance League finished in 2019/2020 and Denbigh Town were placed in the new Lock Stock Ardal North West League for the season 2021/22.
The club narrowly missed out on the promotion spots in the season 2021/2022 finishing third.
History
Chirk A.A.A. F.C. are one of the oldest clubs in Welsh soccer history having being founded in 1876. Chirk are founder members of the F.A. of Wales and to this day remain full members.
Between 1886 and 1894, Chirk were winners of the Welsh Senior Cup on no fewer than 5 occasions. In 1893, Chirk again reached the final only to lose to Wrexham in a game played at Oswestry. 1894 was the last time that Chirk reached the final of this competition. Chirk also featured in the English Cup. In 1887 and 1888 they were only 4 games away from the final losing to Darwin and Derby respectively. The man behind the village’s success was T.E. Thomas, headmaster at Chirk School and a man reputed to have introduced 49 future Welsh internationals to the game.
In 1894, Chirk, with the legendary Billy Meredith in their team, reached the semi -finals of both the Welsh Cup and English Amateur Cup. Unfortunately, the dates of both games clashed and the Welsh F.A. ordered Chirk to play the Welsh Cup tie.
The early Chirk teams were mainly composed of miners from the two now closed village coal mines. The Chirk sides soon gained the “Colliers” nickname which has lasted to the present day and is a fitting and proud link to our successful past.
The first half of the Twentieth century saw Chirk compete in the Welsh League, Combination League, Liverpool Combination League and The Welsh National League where they have played since 1945, the only exception being when they spent one season in the Cymru Alliance in 1997.
Chirk won several domestic honours in the early part of the century, but they failed to gain any success in the National competitions. However, in 1953, Chirk won the Welsh Youth Cup beating Aberystwyth 2 – 1 in the second replay. Many members of this side were playing when Chirk won the Welsh Amateur Cup for the first time in 1959. They went on win this trophy on a further 2 occasions in 1960 and 1963.
During the 70’s & 80’s Chirk were League and Cup winners in Division 2 in 1978/79 whilst also winning the Horace Wynn Cup. Manager John Green returned to the club in 1983/84 to help Chirk win their first Division 1 Championship.
Chirk went 5 seasons until they lifted the Premier Division Cup under the guidance of Graham Jones. Club stalwart Roger Pearce was at the helm when Chirk again won the Premier Division Cup in 1990/91.
In 1995, the club were in trouble and almost folded. An extraordinary meeting was convened, and the closure was avoided. A new committee was formed, and former players Clive Roberts and Phil Jones were appointed as team management.
The 1995/96 season saw the club consolidate its position in the Premier Division and finished in a creditable 3rd position in the league.
The club reformed their reserve team at the beginning of the 1996/97 season to compliment what was building up to be a strong first team squad. The season’s main aim was to achieve promotion to the Cymru Alliance League.
Chirk achieved their aim by finishing runners -up to champions Wrexham Colts. An added bonus to the season was the capture of the inaugural Carlsberg Pub Cup Cymru. This magnificent trophy was won in a thrilling 2 -l victory over Swansea side Bath Hotel to make Chirk National champions yet again.
Chirk only stayed one season in the Cymru Alliance, being relegated after finishing third from bottom with 34points – a tally which normally would ensure survival, but that season the Welsh F.A. were reducing the number of teams in the Cymru Alliance and Chirk found themselves relegated.
On their return to the Welsh National League, Chirk appointed Mike Hughes and Dudley Hall to be the management team. Chirk went on to finish 4th in the league whilst capturing the league cup on the way.
History
Midway through the next season, Chirk appointed goalkeeper Carl Parrish as their player-manager. Carl made a good impression and guided the team to a midtable position after a poor start. The 2001/02 Season saw Chirk finish in a healthy 8th position. A Reserve team was also formed under the guidance of former players Paul Roberts and Nigel Evans where they finished runners-up, gaining promotion to Division two as well as being losing finalists in the Third Division Cup.
The 2002/03 season was a disappointment, we were knocked out of every cup competition in the first round and finished in a miserable 12th place, as well as having the luxury of three first team managers.
The 2003/04 Season saw Ryland Roberts together with Assistant Alan Reeve’s take over the reigns. This had immediate affect with us finishing in sixth place and winning the W.N.L. Premier Cup, the fourth time we had lifted the trophy in 15 years. Our Reserve side also gained promotion to Division One after finishing in an impressive third place under the guidance of Paul Roberts and Mark Holmes.
It was Chirk’s U19 Youth Team that grabbed the headlines over the next few seasons. The highlights were reaching the semi-final of the Welsh Youth Cup before narrowly losing to eventual winners Swansea City and in 2009 lifting the NEWFA U19 Cup for the first time by defeating Brymbo.
The promotion of Mark Holmes and Paul Roberts from Reserve Team Management to First Team supremos in 2009 had a positive effect and the following season they guided the side to runners-up position in the Welsh National League – Premier Division whilst also reaching the semi-finals of the North East Wales Cup losing to eventual winners Buckley Town.
In 2011 the club turned to Richard Williams-Cooke and Gavin Garrigan to lead their side. We finished in a creditable 3rd place in the league whilst also reaching the semi final of the NEWFA Cup losing to eventual winners Cefn Druids. Meanwhile Mark Holmes and Dave Griffiths led our Reserve team to the Reserve Division title – our first championship since 1985.
2012/2013 season the club re-appointed Mark Holmes as First Team Manager with Steve Birch and Dave Griffiths leading the Reserves. The First team took the title for the first time since 1984 and completed the double when they won the Presidents Cup defeating League Cup Winners Brymbo 3-2 in August 2013.
In April 2014, Chirk were beaten finalists in The Welsh Trophy when they lost 3-2 to Llanrug United in the Final at Rhyl.
Chirk were losing finalists in the 2015 NEWFA Challenge Cup losing to Mold Alex in the Final and runners-up to Gresford Athletic in The Premier Division.
In April 2017 Chirk beat Penlan 2-1 in the FAW Trophy Final at Aberystwyth to win the trophy they last won way back in 1963 with goals from Matty Thomas and an extra time winner from Chris Bennion.
In 2019/2020 Chirks Under 19 team reached the final of the Welsh Youth Cup. Unfortunately, the season was cut short by The Coronavirus and the competition was declared null & void!
May 2020 Chirk appointed former player Andy Pryde & James Williams as their new Management team and although the first season was a washout due to the coronavirus, a strong squad was assembled for the 2021/2022 season.
In April 2022 Chirk became the first winners of the inaugural Lockstock Ardal North East League after just 4 league defeats and scoring 104 goals and conceding just 22 to claim their place in Tier 2 of Welsh Football in Cymru North
Their current management team is formed of Gary Jones and Jack Ellis with Keiran Lee Birch as Assistant
