Chairman’s Notes

Welcome to Central Park for this a ernoon’s JD Cymru North League game against Guilsfield.

I’d like to extend a warm Denbigh welcome to all the Guilsfield players, coaching team, Commi ee and supporters.

It’s been a frustra ng February for our first team with a lack of games. They’ve had a home game against Gresford called off for the third me, firstly because of a frozen pitch, then Storm Jocelyn’s winds and finally a waterlogged pitch. Then last week they had a free weekend as it was the Welsh Cup where we are no longer in the compe on.

The upshot is that as of today we have eleven games le this season, which is due to finish on 13th April , so it’s a busy schedule ahead.

As a Commi ee, we are so pleased with how the season has progressed. At the start of the season, we were aiming at a top half finish this season and we look to be on course for this. Dewi and his coaching team of Ma y, Bre and KP have to take credit for all the hard work they have put in to achieve this and they have seen the squad adapt extremely well to the higher standard of football in the Tier 2 JD Cymru League North.

Our new Changing Room Building Project is taking up a lot of my focus at the moment. Having obtained planning permission just before Christmas, we have now secured funding for 50% of the cost of the build. I am ac vely now approaching other ins tu ons throughout Wales who can help fund the rest of the project.

I have met the main building, electrical and plumbing contractors that we have selected and have put in place a plan for the way forward as to when the work can start and how the build will progress. We are aiming to start the work at the end of this season which will be early May by the me all our fixtures for all our teams will have been completed.

A word about our priceless volunteers. We are so indebted to our kitchen team of Jean, Jayne, Lesley, Ann & Rob who hardly see any of the games we play due to their being so busy serving food and drink. The kitchen provides us with valuable income for our finances as does the bar area where Paul, Dave and Gareth do some great work.

As I have men oned before, it is an exci ng me to be involved with the Club as we look to enhance our facili es and with all our Senior and Junior teams doing so well in their respec ve Leagues.

If you feel you have some me available to help the Club off the field in whatever form, please contact myself or Iwan who can give you more details as to the posts we have available.

In the mean me, let’s see our lads get the three points this a ernoon. Enjoy the game.

Managers Office

Manager’s Notes

Welcome to Central Park for this a ernoon’s JD Cymru North league game against Guilsfield. Let’s hope this game goes ahead as we’ve had enough of games ge ng called off due to poor weather condi ons. Our last ou ng was a 2-1 away win against Buckley played at Connah’s Quay’s Deeside stadium. We weren’t at our best on a pitch that resembled one of my fields rather than a football pitch. We could see in the warm up that the pitch was cu ng up badly. It proved so difficult to play our style of football on it and so this had an effect on our performance. S ll, a win’s a win and the lads did put the effort we asked of them on a very heavy pitch.

We’ve had a few changes to the squad during the January transfer window and all our recent signings were involved in the Buckley game. Owen Davies got off the mark with his late penalty and it showed his confidence to step up to take the kick at such a vital stage of the game. At the other end, Jimmy McNally on his debut pulled off some top class saves and kept us in the game on more than one occasion. Dion Gibbons had another impressive performance in midfield and Kyle Cooper impressed us all with his coolness in defence when he came on mid-way through the second half. Max Cooke’s transfer from Chester was finally approved a er a delay in Interna onal Clearance and came on towards the end of the game and we ended the match with a very young eleven which bodes well for the future.

The January transfer window was an extremely busy me with a lot of coming and going. I have to thank our Secretary, Neall Condon for all his work with the incomings and departures. There is so much paperwork involved with transfers and deadlines to meet and without Neall’s pa ence and administra on work I just don’t know where we’d have been.

Craig Rogers, Ryan Kershaw and Craig Pritchard le the Club and I’d like to thank them all for their efforts with the Club. Both the Craig’s have had two s nts at the Club and both were a big part of our double winning season last year. We wish them all well at their new Clubs.

KP is pu ng his coaching role on hold for now as he wishes to return to playing football following a long lay off with a knee injury. He made an instant impact for the Reserves scoring their opener on 6 minutes in their 2-0 win at Llandudno at the start of the month. He then scored again in their 6-3 win at Buckley and played his first full 90 minutes in the match against Nantlle Vale last Saturday. We all know of his talent, and he knows he now needs to up his fitness levels ready for any first team ac on.

We haven’t played Guilsfield since the 2018/19 season and I know from those mes that we will always have a tough encounter against Nathan Leonard’s teams. They sit below us in the League and I’m looking for us to carry on with our good run of League form as we’ve gone three League wins on the bounce . We have everyone available for selec on this a ernoon so with everyone vying for a star ng place it’s a tough one for us to decide on the star ng eleven.

Enjoy the game

Denbigh Town v Guilsfield

Back to action with Town hosting Guilsfield

The last club Town haven’t yet played this season, it’s all set to be an intriguing test at LL16.

Form

Denbigh had a weekend off ahead of this one with Dewi Llion’s side last in action two weeks ago away to Buckley. In a close encounter at Deeside Stadium, Denbigh left it late to secure a 2-1 win. Josh Lock opened the scoring in the first half before Town were pegged back. Just before stoppage time with the score level a cross hit a Buckley hand and Owen Davies stepped up to score a penalty and his first senior goal. It followed a 3-1 home win over Porthmadog and 4-1 success against Llandudno to make it three league wins on the bounce.

Guilsfield, like Denbigh, were also off last weekend but their fortunes weren’t as favourable. They played host to Mold Alexandra at Clos Mytton but fell to a 3-0 defeat. It continued their poor form which has seen them win just once in 2024 so far, and are without an away win since October in the league.

Head-to-Head

This will be the first meeting between the two sides since March 2019 when Kristian Pierce’s lone goal proved to be the difference in Powys. The two sides have met 18 times previously, all coming in second-tier league action. Each side has eight wins each with two draws. Those matches have an average of 4.4 goals per game, Guilsfield edge Denbigh in terms of goals scored in the fixture (41 compared to 38) averaging 2.8 goals per game to Denbigh’s 2.1.

Guilsfield’s last victory over Denbigh came at Central Park in October 2018, whilst they haven’t won at home against Town since September 2016, in a 5-0 thrashing. Of the current Town squad, just Matthew Worrall and Kristian Pierce have scored for Denbigh in this fixture.

VENUE | Central Park to Host WBS League Cup Northern Final Showpiece comes to Denbigh

Denbigh Town are pleased to be hosting the Welsh Blood Service Northern League Cup Final at Central Park.

The finale, which takes place on April 6th at 17:30, will consist of Llandudno and Mold Alexandra as each side fight it out for the Northern Trophy and a place in the national final against their Southern counterparts.

We look forward to welcoming both sides to LL16 for what is set to be an exciting match-up.

Nantlle Vale Reserves 3-2 Denbigh Town Reserves

Reserves bow out at a sopping Treborth

Denbigh Town Reserves exited the FAW Reserve League North Cup at the Quarter-Final stage on Saturday with a narrow loss to Nantlle Vale.

Despite goals from Owen Herbert and Andy Thomas it was the'home' side that advanced on a soaking afternoon in Gwynedd.

Played at Treborth due to Vale's First-Team playing at their traditional home, Liam Nash made a couple of changes to the side. Max Cooke, recently signed from Chester gained valuable minutes as he came into the starting XI, whilst Olly Hansen returned.

In a feisty affair it took 35 minutes for the first goal and it came the way of the visitors. Youngster Cian Dafyfdd was on hand to put Vale in front with his first of the afternoon.

As the 45 ticked over there was plenty of action to be had in stoppage time. Rhys Lloyd slid the ball into Owen Herbert on the right of the box and he lashed the ball home to level the score. However, parity lasted just a minute as Dafydd popped up for his second in a sucker punch before the break.

Half-Time: Nantlle Vale Reserves 2-1 Denbigh Town Reserves

Within nine minutes of the re-start, the hosts doubled their advantage. A ball into the Town box was scrambled into the back of the net by Matthew Davies, giving his side some breathing room.

Town made a couple of changes and within a minute of coming on Andy Thomas appeared to make the difference, as he reduced the deficit with a fine finish.

Town kept pushing for the all-important equaliser to send the game to penalties but Nantlle Vale stood firm to advance to the Semi-Final.

The Reserves are next in action with a trip to Holywell Development on Saturday.

Denbigh Town Ladies 0-7 Pwllheli Women

Ladies lose out in final group match

Denbigh Town Ladies are through to the Quarter-Final stage of the Betty Pickering Cup despite a heavy defeat to Pwllheli at Central Park on Sunday.

Lois Thomas' hatrick, as well as a trio of goals from Jini Owen Hughes and a strike from Catrin Thomas saw the visitors take the points to finish top of the group with two wins over Town.

The group, originally consisting of three sides saw Bellevue pull out of the tournament and thus both sides will progress through Group C of the competition.

t was a tough afternoon for Ellen Lawson's side that saw the likes of Shannon Jones, Lowri Claybrook, Ceri Purvis and Jess Frith to the squad. The Ladies went into the break down by three as Hughes Owen gave Pwllheli the lead on three minutes before Lois Thomas and Catrin Thomas struck later in the half.

Half-Time: Denbigh Town Ladies 0-3 Pwllheli Women

It was more of the same after the break despite two changes at the break with goalkeeper Netty Young making way for Sophie Bancroft and Jess Frith returning to the pitch for the first time since November, replacing Charlotte Morris.

Owen Hughes had her hatrick completed within 15 minutes of the restart with goals on 53 and 60 minutes before Lois Thomas had one of her own with strikes on 80 and 82 minutes to stick the knife in.

The draw for the next stage of the competition will be made soon with the following sides advancing to the final eight of the competition.

Group A: Winners: Llangefni Town; Runners-Up: Amlwch Town

Group B: Winners: Flint Town United; Runners-Up: Kinmel Bay

Group C: Winners: Pwllhelil; Runners-Up: Denbigh Town

Group D: Winners: Berriew; Runners-Up: Llanystumdwy

INTERNATIONAL | Ex Denbigh Captain Heading to World Cup Former Town skipper to represent Wales

Denbigh Town Football Club are delighted to learn this week that former captain Tim Bowker will represent Wales at this year’s Veterans World Cup.

Bowker, who captained the club some four decades ago, was once an inhabitant of Nantglyn and is now based in South Wales.

He took the reigns of the Wales Over-75s in November and is now tasked with whittling down his squad ahead of this year’s World Cup. Still playing, he currently competes in the Wales Veterans Football League for both Cardiff Academicals and Barry Town Vets.

He recently gave an interview to the BBC saying "At any age, to play in a World Cup, OK we're not playing Pele and Bobby Moore, but you're still representing your country, it's great," he said.

"The philosophy is if we score more goals than the opposition, we win the game. Nobody's interested in a nil-nil draw, attack is the way forward."

Bowker also represents the national team himself as a player for the over 65s and will be busy come the summer when the tournament comes around, this year being held in Cardiff for the first time,

Opposition also competing this summer include the likes of Norway, Germany, Denmark and the United States.

We wish Tim and the squad all the best this summer and eagerly await their results.

STAFF NEWS | Brett Jones Appointed Denbigh Town Assistant Manager

Jones promoted to Assistant Manager

Denbigh Town Football Club are thrilled to announce that Brett Jones has been appointed assistant manager to Dewi Llion. Jones, 36, makes the step up from his previous role as a coach for the side and will now operate directly as manager Dewi Llion’s assistant. The move comes following Kristian Pierce’s decision to step down to focus on returning to the pitch.

“I’m really pleased to make the step up to assistant manager” said Jones.

“The club is close to my heart after being involved here on and off for two decades, so taking the role on is a huge honour. I’ve had a really good relationship with Dewi since our time together at Bala Town and feel we’ve worked really well since my return in 2020. Now it's time to continue push on and finish as high as possible this season".

Manager Dewi Llion was delighted to see Jones step up adding “Brett is someone I’ve known for a long time, worked with closely, and trust implicitly.

“He’s a superb coach and now feels like the perfect time for him to step up in the role and work with me on other aspects of management. Brett’s experience in Welsh football and elsewhere at an elite level is key and he’s already had an impact on the team since returning, particularly last season”.

Having come through the ranks at Central Park he made his first senior appearances as a player at 16 in 2004 for the Reserves, and was handed his debut for the First Team by then-manager Tim Dyer later that season.

After a number of years playing at Denbigh, Jones opted to begin coaching and had spells within the academy at Rhyl followed by Bala Town, where he first linked up with Dewi Llion.

Following three years at Maes Tegid Jones opted to return to Central Park as a First Team Coach for the 2014/15 campaign. However, his time at Town would be short having moved to Everton to coach their Women’s Under 21s.

In the summer of 2020 he left Merseyside and once against linked up at Central Park to join Dewi’s staff as a coach.

During his time so far Jones has won a league and cup double in 2022/23 and been an integral part of the management team, where he has excelled in training and pre-match activation.

Congratulations, Brett!

Brief History

Denbigh Town Football Club was formed in 1880 and has remained one of the most popular and highly respected Clubs in North Wales ever since. One of the Club’s finest achievements came in 1924 when they won both the Welsh Amateur Cup and the North Wales Coast Amateur Cup.

A number of minor successes ensued in the subsequent decades until the Club hit a purple patch in the 1970s when they won the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) Division One Championship four times and the League Cup on five occasions. Town also landed the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1970 and the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1972. The manager through most of this golden period was John Trevor Roberts who remains one of Denbigh Town’s most legendary figures.

After the Club left the Wrexham Area League at the turn of the 1980s and joined the Clwyd League many trophy less years followed. The sleeping giant did not awaken until the 1991/1992 season when Liverpudlian duo Bill Dawson and Rook Cook-Hannah took over the reins at the Club.

In their first season the Club won promotion to the Premier Division, but the biggest highlight was an unforgettable 1-0 North Wales Challenge Cup Victory over the 4th placed HFS Loans League semiprofessionals of Caernarfon Town before an ecstatic crowd at Central Park.

After two seasons in the Clwyd Premier, the Club was promoted to the Fitlock Welsh Alliance League in 1994/95. After finishing 4th in their first season Denbigh Town followed up in style by landing the League Championship and Cookson Cup double, the Club’s finest achievement for almost 20 years. The Club joined the Cymru Alliance in 1996/97 and enjoyed several good seasons at that level.

Denbigh joined the Welsh Alliance Leagie for 2002/2003 and finished 3rd, reached the semi-final of the Barritt Cup and won the Alves Cup with Roy Cook-Hannah at the helm. Cook- Hannah resigned in December 2003 and Clwyd Williams & Nick Hailes were installed as joint-managers. The team finished the season in 12th position.

In May 2004 Tim Dyer was appointed manager and in 2005/2006 he guided the team to the Barritt Cup and Cookson Cup double, runners up in the Welsh Alliance League and also finalists in the North Wales Coast FA Challenge Cup. The Club also won the Welsh Alliance Fair Play League for 2005/2006 & 2006/2007. In 2007 Denbigh Town were crowned Welsh Alliance League Champions and Cookson Cup winners.

After Tim Dyer stepped down at the end of the 2008/2009 season Steve Jones was appointed manager with Dean Martin as his assistant. Under the new regime the team finished 10th in the 2009/2010 Cymru Alliance League. Unfortunately, due to the Welsh Premier Super 12, six clubs were relegated from the Welsh Premier and the 3 feeder leagues all promoted a club to the Cymru Alliance. This meant only the top 7 survived in the Cymru Alliance and so Denbigh Town were relegated to the Welsh Alliance League. Jones and his assistant Martin resigned in May 2010.

John James and Andy Lewis were appointed manager and coach for the 2010/2011 season.

Despite relegation the Club started ground development with hard standing area placed all around the perimeter of the ground and floodlights were installed in April 2012.

In 2012/2013 ex-player and captain Richard Williams- Cooke was appointed manager. In his first season Cookie took the club to runners up position in the Welsh Alliance League. The following season the Club won the league, remaining unbeaten throughout the whole league campaign and also won the Mawddach Cup. The Club were promoted to the Cymru Alliance – the Tier 2 level of Welsh football

Cookie resigned in June 2014 due to work and family commitments. A joint management team of Dave Taylor and Terry Ingram were appointed in his place, but they parted company with club a few months later. In September 2014 the Club appointed Elfed Lloyd and 1st team Captain Max Peate as caretaker managers for the rest of that season.

Gareth Thomas (Perry) was appointed manager on 21st May 2015, and he led the Club to 3rd position in the Cymru Alliance in season 2015/2016. In the same season Perry also took the Club to the Word Cup Final losing 2-0 to treble winners The New Saints (TNS).

However, in November 2016 the Club parted company with Perry and Eddie Maurice Jones was appointed manager

Maurice-Jones took the Club to its highest ever finish in the Cymru Alliance – that of 2nd in the season 2017/2018. However, at the end of that season Maurice-Jones moved to become manager of Rhyl and many of the players followed him.

New joint managers Dewi Llion Jones & Matty Jones had the task of forming a team with new players with only a few weeks left before the start of the season. Despite a valiant effort by the managers and their new team the Club fell into the relegation zone on the last day of the season 2018/2019 and were relegated to the Welsh Alliance.

Matty Jones left the joint managership role in April 2019 and Dewi Llion Jones was appointed sole manager for the season 2019/2020. He appointed former Town player Owain Roberts as his coach. A strong season followed but the Covid 19 pandemic meant the season was cut short and Denbigh were appointed runners up in the league to Holyhead Hotspurs.

The Welsh Alliance League finished in 2019/2020 and Denbigh Town were placed in the new Lock Stock Ardal North West League for the season 2021/22.

The club narrowly missed out on the promotion spots in the season 2021/2022 finishing third.

Brief History continued

History

Football has been played in Guilsfield since the early part of 1930's but little is known of the teams of that era. One player of note from the early 50's was Wyn Nicholls who later played for Newtown, Welshpool and gained Welsh Caps at under 18 level, he later signed professional forms for Wrexham.

The present club was formed on August 6th 1957 when the club entered the Montgomeryshire Amateur League and matches during this early period were played on local farmer's fields and during the summer months the committee and players would help the farmer with his harvest to cover the ground rent for the season.

During the mid sixties the village doubled in size and the local Community Centre was built with room to accommodate a football pitch, which is where the club plays today. Throughout the 60's, 70's and 80's the team was almost all local players of a good standard but honours eluded the club except for the occasional runners-up in cup finals.

At the beginning of the 90's a grandstand was built and the dressing rooms refurbished at a total cost of £34,000. By now the team was starting to show potential and the 1994/1995 season saw the club win the Montgomeryshire Amateur League, First Division. The club took advantage of the Welsh F.A. pyramid system, was promoted to the Mid Wales League and duly finished in a creditable 4th spot in our first season. The 2000/2001 Spar Mid Wales League campaign was brought to a premature conclusion following the foot and mouth crisis that broke out in mid February 2001. At the time of abandonment we were well placed in the league and fighting for promotion to the Cymru Alliance League. As a result of the merger of two existing Cymru Alliance League clubs (Llangefni Town and Glantraeth) an extra promotion slot was available and our application to join the league for 2001/2002 was accepted. In our first two seasons we finished in 15th place. It was during our second season that Mike Barton was appointed as manager and with a strengthened squad the Club finished in sixth position in 2003/04. The next league campaign saw the Club occupying a top half position throughout the campaign finally finishing in seventh spot. The 2006/07 season saw Guilsfield in a mid-table slot but disappointingly unable to retain the Central Wales Cup they won the season before, losing to Llanfyllin Town in the final. The 50th anniversary season (2007/08) of the club saw Guilsfield led by new manager Graham Evans. The players went on a great Welsh Cup run after defeating 3 Welsh Premier League clubs in Airbus UK, Connah’s Quay Nomads and Caernarfon Town en route to losing in the Quarter Final in front of 500 spectators to Bangor City. Our top scorer for the season, Tim Nunnerley was rewarded for a fabulous year by being named the League’s Player of the Year. Mike Barton returned as manager in 2008/09 and we completed the season in 13th spot and met Welsh Premier League giants The New Saints in the Welsh Cup, being narrowly defeated 3-2. Unfortunately, we also suffered defeat in a penalty shoot-out in the League Cup semi final against Holyhead Hotspur.

History

Season 2009/10 was full of interest, with the focus on the FAW controversial plans for the re-structure of the Welsh Pyramid system. Our aim was to remain in this league but we struggled with our inconsistent play up until Christmas. However, the New Year brought a change in fortunes and the players put in a great League run in 2010 to secure our place in the Cymru Alliance League, despite ten clubs being relegated.

In the 2010/11 season, we gained our first piece of silverware at this level by winning the Huws Gray League Cup after a great performance to defeat Porthmadog in the final held at Cefn Druids FC. During the season, the team was led by current manager Russell Cadwallader. The following season, the club finished in a respectable 8th spot and won the Central Wales Cup with a 2 -1 victory over Aberaeron. Russell stood down as Manager after the game.

Guilsfield appointed ex-Guilsfield player and Ellesmere Rangers manager Matthew Burton as its new Manager for 2013/14. In his first season, Matt steered the club to sixth spot which meant automatic qualification for the Word Cup in 2014.

The following season saw the Guils finish in mid-table, after threatening the leaders at one stage before falling away in the New Year. The highlight of the season was reaching the quarter-final of the Welsh Cup after defeating Cardiff Met by 3-2 before bowing out to eventual winners Bala Town. At the end of the campaign, Danny Barton announced that he was stepping down as Manager and the club duly appointed Nathan Leonard as the new Player/Manager.

The club celebrated it’s 60th year in its current format in 2017/18. The highlight of the season was defeating Cardiff Met in the Welsh Cup. The club also consolidated its position in the top half of the Huws Gray Alliance.

2018/19 saw a season of inconsistency but a late run led to another top six finish in the league. In 2019/22 and the league entering a new format with the introduction of the JD Cymru North, the club has changed its management structure with Nathan becoming Director of Football, working closely with club stalwart and coach Bernie Jones. However, Lenny decided to take up the Manager’s role at FC Oswestry Town, his hometown club. Bernie and Geoff Richards stepped up to run the side and we went on a great unbeaten run until the season was curtailed due to the pandemic. The team finished in 3rd spot and was awarded the League’s Far Play Award.

2019/20 saw the return of Nathan as Manager after the demise of FC Oswestry. However, as we all know, there was no return to competitive football due to the Covid pandemic. Nathan had an experienced backroom staff for the 2021/22 season with Bernie and Geoff joined by Jason Brindley and Calum Williams. The club achieved a marvellous 3rd spot in the JD Cymru North once again and reached the Quarter Final of the JD Welsh Cup before bowing out 2-0 to The New Saints. Three of our squad, Chris Cathrall, Josh Astley and Jamie Hyne, represented the League which went on to qualify for the Regions Cup tournament in Northern Ireland in Autumn 2022.

Guilsfield had an excellent 2022/23 campaign with a 4th spot league finish, after a tremendous run of form after the Christmas period. We reached the semi-final of the League Cup but the icing on the cake was the return of the Central Wales Cup to the village following a 2-0 win over local rivals Caersws.
