REPORT | DENBIGH TOWN 2-1 RUTHIN TOWN FLEMING THE HERO WITH LAST GASP DERBY WINNER Paul Fleming wrote himself into Denbigh Town folklore as his stoppage-time winner ensured the Vale of Clwyd bragging rights remained firmly red in front of a clubrecord attendance. 1,145 supporters watched on as Ruthin took the lead via derby specialist Llyr Morris but a second-half double from Nathan Brown and the skipper Fleming sent the crowd wild in a passionate afternoon at Central Park. The first chance of the game fell to Town within the first minute or so when a well-worked move found Brown who hit a tame effort into the grateful arms of Dan Goldston. Ruthin controlled possession for large parts of the match and carved out their first chance after 13 minutes, when a corner was cleared as far as captain Osian Davies who volleyed towards goal, but Aaron Jones held it firmly. The closest opportunity came just before the 20-minute mark as Brown once again found himself with a sight of goal, swinging a volley towards the net but it slammed against the post. In reality, chances were limited in the next 20 minutes or so, neither keeper being tested but Ruthin edging the contest and appearing in control. That paid off for the visitors as Llyr Morris was played through down the middle and dispatched the ball past Jones to open the scoring.

Ruthin sensing an opportunity almost doubled the advantage only for Morris’ weaving run to be blocked by Ben Lockley, before a shot at goal following a corner was cleared off the line by Josh Lock. Half-Time: Denbigh Town 0-1 Ruthin Town Trailing at the break, Town came out with purpose but it was still Ruthin who had the first shot on goal. A free-kick from Jake Hampson was destined for the top corner before Jones made a sensational stop to tip it on to the crossbar. Just over ten minutes into the half and Town restored parity, Brown was played through on goal by Lock and with a sweeping boot placed the ball to the right of the keeper in what was a superb finish. Now Denbigh had the game by the scruff of the neck, following the hour mark Craig Pritchard made his way into the box on the right before unleashing a shot that had to once again be tipped over by Goldston. Five minutes later he was involved again battling it out for the ball before laying it to Fleming, the skipper in turn fed Lock but he couldn’t keep his effort down. Pritchard was a busy man, running on to a loose ball on the edge of the area and testing the keeper, but the game wasn’t all one-way traffic. Sam Jones was free down the right with just the keeper to beat, but he dragged his effort wide of the mark. Less than a minute later Town were ruing missed chances of their own, as substitute Danny Clarke was off balance and could only steer his shot into the side netting. Ben Lockley then looked like he might win it as a free-kick from deep found the defender sliding in, but the keeper made himself big and denied from close range. As stoppage time began, Town continued to look for a famous winner. They duly delivered when Brown’s cross found the skipper Fleming who rose highest to slam the ball into the back of the net for some incredible scenes of jubilation throughout Central Park. The win keeps the bragging rights in Denbigh if not for at least another week, with the next game the reverse, away to Ruthin Town on New Year’s Day. Denbigh Town: A.Jones, Roberts, Lockley, Parry-Jones, S.Jones, Lock, Kershaw, Brown, Fleming, Pritchard, Weir. Subs: Rogers, Thomas-Sadler, Hansen, Foulkes, Clarke, Lloyd Referee: Sion Davies Attendance: 1,145

Brief History

Denbigh Town Football Club was formed in 1880 and has remained one of the most popular and highly respected Clubs in North Wales ever since. One of the Club’s finest achievements came in 1924 when they won both the Welsh Amateur Cup and the North Wales Coast Amateur Cup.

A number of minor successes ensued in the subsequent decades until the Club hit a purple patch in the 1970s when they won the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) Division One Championship four times and the League Cup on five occasions. Town also landed the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1970 and the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1972. The manager through most of this golden period was John Trevor Roberts who remains one of Denbigh Town’s most legendary figures.

After the Club left the Wrexham Area League at the turn of the 1980s and joined the Clwyd League many trophy less years followed. The sleeping giant did not awaken until the 1991/1992 season when Liverpudlian duo Bill Dawson and Rook Cook-Hannah took over the reins at the Club.

In their first season the Club won promotion to the Premier Division, but the biggest highlight was an unforgettable 1-0 North Wales Challenge Cup Victory over the 4th placed HFS Loans League semiprofessionals of Caernarfon Town before an ecstatic crowd at Central Park.

After two seasons in the Clwyd Premier, the Club was promoted to the Fitlock Welsh Alliance League in 1994/95. After finishing 4th in their first season Denbigh Town followed up in style by landing the League Championship and Cookson Cup double, the Club’s finest achievement for almost 20 years. The Club joined the Cymru Alliance in 1996/97 and enjoyed several good seasons at that level. Denbigh joined the Welsh Alliance Leagie for 2002/2003 and finished 3rd, reached the semi-final of the Barritt Cup and won the Alves Cup with Roy Cook-Hannah at the helm. Cook- Hannah resigned in December 2003 and Clwyd Williams & Nick Hailes were installed as joint-managers. The team finished the season in 12th position.

In May 2004 Tim Dyer was appointed manager and in 2005/2006 he guided the team to the Barritt Cup and Cookson Cup double, runners up in the Welsh Alliance League and also finalists in the North Wales Coast FA Challenge Cup. The Club also won the Welsh Alliance Fair Play League for 2005/2006 & 2006/2007. In 2007 Denbigh Town were crowned Welsh Alliance League Champions and Cookson Cup winners.

After Tim Dyer stepped down at the end of the 2008/2009 season Steve Jones was appointed manager with Dean Martin as his assistant. Under the new regime the team finished 10th in the 2009/2010 Cymru Alliance League. Unfortunately, due to the Welsh Premier Super 12, six clubs were relegated from the Welsh Premier and the 3 feeder leagues all promoted a club to the Cymru Alliance. This meant only the top 7 survived in the Cymru Alliance and so Denbigh Town were relegated to the Welsh Alliance League. Jones and his assistant Martin resigned in May 2010.

Brief History continued John James and Andy Lewis were appointed manager and coach for the 2010/2011 season.

Despite relegation the Club started ground development with hard standing area placed all around the perimeter of the ground and floodlights were installed in April 2012.

In 2012/2013 ex-player and captain Richard Williams- Cooke was appointed manager. In his first season Cookie took the club to runners up position in the Welsh Alliance League. The following season the Club won the league, remaining unbeaten throughout the whole league campaign and also won the Mawddach Cup. The Club were promoted to the Cymru Alliance – the Tier 2 level of Welsh football

Cookie resigned in June 2014 due to work and family commitments. A joint management team of Dave Taylor and Terry Ingram were appointed in his place, but they parted company with club a few months later. In September 2014 the Club appointed Elfed Lloyd and 1st team Captain Max Peate as caretaker managers for the rest of that season. Gareth Thomas (Perry) was appointed manager on 21st May 2015, and he led the Club to 3rd position in the Cymru Alliance in season 2015/2016. In the same season Perry also took the Club to the Word Cup Final losing 2-0 to treble winners The New Saints (TNS).

However, in November 2016 the Club parted company with Perry and Eddie Maurice Jones was appointed manager Maurice-Jones took the Club to its highest ever finish in the Cymru Alliance – that of 2nd in the season 2017/2018. However, at the end of that season Maurice-Jones moved to become manager of Rhyl and many of the players followed him.

New joint managers Dewi Llion Jones & Matty Jones had the task of forming a team with new players with only a few weeks left before the start of the season. Despite a valiant effort by the managers and their new team the Club fell into the relegation zone on the last day of the season 2018/2019 and were relegated to the Welsh Alliance.

Matty Jones left the joint managership role in April 2019 and Dewi Llion Jones was appointed sole manager for the season 2019/2020. He appointed former Town player Owain Roberts as his coach. A strong season followed but the Covid 19 pandemic meant the season was cut short and Denbigh were appointed runners up in the league to Holyhead Hotspurs.

The Welsh Alliance League finished in 2019/2020 and Denbigh Town were placed in the new Lock Stock Ardal North West League for the season 2021/22. The club narrowly missed out on the promotion spots in the season 2021/2022 finishing third.

History

Football in Llandudno dates back to 1878 when a club, probably known as Gloddaeth Rovers, was in existence for around a decade. The club was formed for the purpose of providing activity for cricketers during their close season. Llandudno were founder members of the Welsh National League (North) in 1921 and were champions in 1923 and League Cup winners in 1930. The club won the N.W.C.F.A in 1926 and the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1929. Controversy struck the club in 1931 when the F.A.W instructed them to play East Wales, which Llandudno refused and were suspended. Llandudno were also founder members of the Welsh League (North) in 1935 and remained in the league until war broke out in 1939 and then re-joined in 1945 up until 1974. Llandudno were league champions in 1936 and repeated the feat the following season, in addition the club regained the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1948 and 1962, the Alves Cup in 1951 and the Cookson Cup in 1965. The club moved to its current home at Maesdu Park in 1991 after the “council field” was used for the construction of the ASDA store in the late 1970’s, now the new Parc MBI Maesdu. The current ground was officially opened in 1991 and floodlights were added in 1994. The following season saw the erection of a clubhouse and two small stands which provides covered seating for 130 spectators. The club has then went under major transitions, with the addition of a new press box, built by local lad Cyril “Ciz” Williams who tragically died while construction was ongoing, and it is surely a testament that such a great number of friends were determined to finish his work and the building stands as a fitting memorial to this wonderful man. In the 2004/05 season the current dressing rooms were built, and the grandstands with disabled access. In the 2014/15 season major developments continued with the addition of a brand new entrance foyer, fitted with an educational suite, and a state of the art 3G pitch alongside the introduction of a thriving community arm, and for the first time in the clubs history Llandudno Football Club earned promotion into the Welsh Premier League. The club then reached an agreement with sportswear giants Adidas to be their official kit wear supplier until at least 2017, along with major kit sponsors from W.R. Davies Renault and the UPVC Outlet. The good news didn’t stop there as more redevelopments took place around the ground with the introduction of a brand new TV gantry and 75 seater stand. At the end of the 2015/16 season, and in Llandudno’s debut year in the top tier of Welsh football, the Club gained automatic promotion to the Europa League after a third placed finish. Llandudno had earned themselves a tie against two time European Cup Winners IFK Goteborg in the first qualifying round, only to be outmuscled 7-1 on aggregate, with Danny Hughes the name in history scoring for his hometown club. After two more seasons in the top flight of Welsh football, Llandundo were relegated to the Huws Gray Cymeu Alliance after failing to beat Camarthen Town in 2019. The following season was postponed half way through after COVID 19 struck. In Sean Eardley's first full season in charge, the Club finished second place in the new JD Cymru North League (Tier 2) after falling short to Airbus in the title decider. Expectations were high for the 22/23 season, in the opening game vs Colwyn Bay, the OPS Wind Arena held over 1600 spectators which was a record at the time. After five games at The OPS Wind Arena, things were looking positive until October 2022 where our 3G pitch had been deemed unsafe by the FAW. Impacts of this ran right throughout the club, as the Club was forced to play home games at Nantporth, Bangor with most academy teams playing here too. A third place finish was very good considering the challenges thrown at the team. A few weeks after the season had ended, the Club had lost our Academy licence, the academy backroom staff didn't agree with this decision and made an unsuccessful appeal to the FAW With hurdles thrown at the Club from every angle, leaving them in a dire financial state due to the pitch that was unable for use, not generating any income, the board came up with a plan to save the club, a large scale music event. After months of hard work, the team of dedicated volunteers made it happen and brought popular British Indie band Scouting For Girls along with many other great acts to 'Llandudno Live Fest'. Despite the amazing event put on, Llandudno Live Fest was financially unsuccessful. Focus then turned to a grant application aimed at re-laying our 3G pitch and installing LED floodlights. The new pitch hosted its first games a few months ago and all Llandudno’s home games are now back at Maesddu Park.
