Board Room Chairman’s Notes Welcome to Central Park this a ernoon’s Boxing Day match in the JD Cymru North League game against our neighbours Ruthin Town. I trust you’ve all had a great Christmas and are looking forward to 2024. I’d like to extend a warm Denbigh welcome to all the Ruthin players, coaching team, Commi ee and supporters. The year 2023 has been a special year here at the Club with us winning both the Lockstock Ardal North West League and the Lockstock Ardal League Cup. A truly memorable feat and we also reached the final of the FAW Amateur Trophy. Since then, we’ve adapted well to the higher Tier 2 league of the JD Cymru North It’s been almost two months since our last home game here at Central Park and a lot has been happening off the field. A few weeks ago we were invited as a Club to a end the Denbighshire Leisure Communi es Awards night at the Rhyl Pavilion. Over 500 people a ended as we won the Denbighshire Sports Club of the Year Award. This really is a superb accolade for the Club as it recognises all the hard work done by everyone involved within our Club. The Award recognised a Club that had demonstrated excellence in management, development and compe on throughout the Club. It recognised not only the fantas c achievements of our First Team this season with their League and Cup double, but also the Juniors sec on achieving Pla num Accredita on by the Football Associa on of Wales together with the con nued improvement of our Ladies and Reserves Teams. We took 30 people to the event including Commi ee members , Players and Coaches from the First Team, Reserves, Ladies and Juniors , together with invaluable volunteers and loyal supporters. A truly memorable evening. A couple of weeks before that we held two more successful Interna onal games here at Central Park when Cymru Under16’s played Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in the Victory Shield. Once again, the games saw great support from the area with over 1200 people a ending the two games. Cymru drew their first game 1-1 against Northern Ireland and cruelly lost to a last minute penalty in a 3-2 defeat to the Republic of Ireland . Nevertheless, it was so good to hear all the teams comment highly on the quality of our grass pitch, and the FAW have pencilled us in to hold more such games in 2024. Our goalmouths have taken a bit of a ba ering over the last few games. We have arranged for 360 Groundcare to carry out work on these areas by laying a carpet of turf over the goalmouths. Hopefully these will stand up to the test today. Thank you all for your support this last year. It’s been a blast. Happy New Year to you and your families
Shon Powell Chairman
Managers Office Manager’s Notes Welcome to Central Park for this a ernoons’ local derby game against Ruthin Town. I hope you have all had a great Christmas. It seems an age since we last played here at Central Park at the start of November when we beat Mold Alex with an impressive 3-2 performance and a last minute winner from Dan Parry Jones. Since then, we had a great November on the road winning 3-0 in a game we dominated . An impressive 4-3 away win against Flint Town Utd followed in the Quarter Final of the Welsh Blood Service JD North League Cup. In a fast-flowing game played in a great spirit, we had several chances in the first half to go in at half me with a decent lead. Instead, we didn’t take these and allowed a youthful Flint side to take the lead from some sloppy defending and although we equalised immediately a erwards it took a great goal from Ryan Kershaw to give us a 2-1 cushion going into the break. The second half saw us take control by being 4-2 up a er 63 minutes and we brought on several subs tu ons to give lads more game me. This decision almost backfired as Flint scored a late goal and almost equalised late on, but fair play to our lads we held out to go into the Semi-Final. December has not been a good month in that we’ve had two games called off. Firstly, our home game against Prestatyn lost out to a frozen pitch and our away trip to Guilsfield fell foul of a waterlogged pitch. This has upset our rhythm as we all need games to help maintain our form as have been on a tremendous run of winning games since September. A 2-2 draw against a rejuvenated Llandudno side saw another really entertaining game on their newly laid 4G pitch. Ma hew Worrall and Nathan Brown nabbed our goals , but the performance was way off our best, and it just showed how a lack of game me can affect players. Llandudno had started the season poorly, but have now put together a string of good results to pull themselves away from the relega on zone. Last weekend we faced Mold again , this me at Alyn Park and went down 2-0. We had decent first half with us defending well , but not being able to break down a well organised Mold defence. The second half saw us make two mistakes and they capitalised on both of these and made us pay the penalty with two goals. This a ernoon is a game we are all looking forward to. Bragging rights in the Vale of Clwyd is the incen ve for us to go out and win and then we face each other again at Ruthin on New Years Day. We have a full squad available to select for today and everyone is keen to play. We have been buoyed by the news that we have been able to extend Josh Lock’s loan spell with us un l the end of the season. Paul Fleming is back fully fit a er missing a couple of game through a toe injury and Morgan Thomas Sadler is in conten on a er his awful leg injury at Bangor earlier in the season. These last twelve months have been something else at the Club as we pushed for the treble and ended up winning the double in the Lock Stock Ardal Tier 3 League. The response from all you fans has been amazing and I’d like to take this opportunity on behalf of the management and players of thanking you all for your support and wish you all a Happy New Year. Dewi Llion Jones

Denbigh Town 3—0 Ruthin Town 27th December 2018 This eagerly awaited derby lived up to its expectations in a captivating game full of incident and watched by the largest crowd at Central Park for many a year. Lewis Sirrell was the hero of the day with three superb goals, along with Denbigh keeper Craig Vernon making two vital penalty saves in a fiercely competitive game which saw Denbigh finishing the game with ten men. On a mild Boxing Day afternoon Denbigh made two changes to the side that lost to Rhyl as they welcomed back Miles Todd from suspension with Dan Lloyd coming in at left back. Ruthin had won the previous encounter 2-1 in August and went into the game as favourites in light of their higher league position.
The first challenge of the afternoon saw Miles Todd pick up a yellow card after less than a minute for a late challenge in a typical start to a local derby. With four minutes gone Denbigh’s Mark Roberts was on the end of a great through ball from Sam Downey, but Ruthin keeper Ryan Goldston was alert to the danger and was able to thwart Robert’s attempt on goal. Ruthin responded and from a corner Kevin Evans’ header went just wide of the Denbigh goal. Denbigh continued to pressure and Dan Lloyd had a half volley which went into the midriff of Goldston. The always impressive Tony Davies continued to lead his men by example and he went close with a glancing header from Lewis Sirrell’s free kick. Pat Hinchcliffe then went close with a curling free kick which went just wide of the left hand post.
On 30 minutes Ruthin were awarded their first penalty when Llyr Morris broke into the penalty area and in a challenge from Tony Davies he fell to the ground and referee Mike Gray pointed to the spot and brandished a yellow card to Davies. Morris brushed himself down to take the kick and with a well struck shot fired to Denbigh keeper’s left hand side. Vernon reacted superbly by diving to his left to make a brilliant save by palming the ball away to safety and to the delight of the vociferous home crowd. This spurred the home team on with Scott McHarrie seeing his shot go just wide from a Curtis Langton knock down. The first goal came on 38 minutes as a result of hard working Pat Hinchcliffe doing some great work on the right wing and he sent in a pin point cross for Lewis Sirrell to head in from 10 yards giving Goldstron no chance. With teams coming out for the second half with Denbigh 1-0 up, it was’nt long before that lead was doubled with that man Lewis Sirrell picking the ball up some 20 yards from goal and letting fly an unstoppable shot which flew past Goldstron. Tempers got heated as the game progressed and after a goal mouth scramble in the Ruthin penalty area resulted in some pushing and shoving, referee Gray showed yellow cards to Curtis Langton and Pat Hinchcliffe. Still Denbigh were in control of the game limiting Ruthin’s forward line to sporadic glimpses of the Denbigh goal with Curtis Langton and Tony Davies proving a strong barrier to any attempts on goal. In midfield Stuart Vernon excelled again, playing some touches with Sam Downey and Scott McHarrie who have formed a great relationship in the engine room of the team and helped dictate the game. Up front Sirrell was in search of his hat trick and was unlucky when on 80 minutes another long range shot was this time parried away by Goldstron. He did’nt have to wait long for his third as on 84 minutes he caught the ball on the volley to blast the ball into the net. 3-0 to Denbigh and it should have been enough for Denbigh to see out the game comfortably
However Ruthin were not finished and Llyr Morris picked the ball up and ran into Denbigh’s area, only to be challenged unfairly by Denbigh’s defenders and another penalty was awarded. Denbigh’s defenders protested at the severity of the decision during which Curtis Langton received his second yellow card of the game meaning he had to leave the field. Ruthin substitute Ryan Jones stepped up to take the penalty kick and once again Vernon guessed correctly and produced another tremendous save and Denbigh cleared the ball to safety. Minutes later and it was all over with Denbigh deservedly taking the three points. A delighted joint manager Dewi Llion said after the game “What a great result for the lads and what a hat-trick for Lewis. Verno’s saves were brilliant. We went into the match with a game plan which the players all took on board and its paid dividends. The lads gave their all today and its means so much to win in front of such a large crowd”.
THE DERBY | The History of the Vale of Clwyd Derby Two Towns, eight miles apart with a footballing history that spans 146 years. Finally, a er five years one of Wales’ oldest derbies is back. The Vale of Clwyd Derby was the first fixture supporters from both the red and blue half of Denbighshire will have searched for when the fixtures were released in the summer, and for good reason. A historic clash where two of North Wales’ biggest towns come together for 90 minutes of tribal compe on. Denbigh and Ruthin have been playing football in one guise or another as far back at 1876, in October of that year a club in Denbigh was formed with the first match arranged coming against the ‘Ruthin Volunteers’. Over the next 25 years, a number of clubs from both sides met in friendlies with huge crowds gathering. The first recorded match between Denbigh Town and Ruthin Town was found in January 1883 ending 0-0, but matches were regular beforehand against Ruthin and Ruthin Colts, whilst teams from Denbigh including the likes of the Church Guild and Albion journeyed across the Clwyd. The first recorded match between two sides came back in March 1878, Denbigh Templars bea ng Ruthin Grammar School 2-0. It wasn’t un l 1905 that the two sides met in compe ve league ac on, though we had faced off in 1882 in the Welsh Cup with the First Round e ending 3-3 before Ruthin advanced. The first league mee ngs came in the old North Wales Coast Junior League, facing off regularly over the next three years before sporadic cup matches. In 1923 the biggest Vale of Clwyd Derby win was recorded with Denbigh running out 9-0 winners on the way to winning the North Wales Coast Challenge Cup. Almost 30 years passed between our next mee ngs, a couple of Welsh Cup es in 1949 and 1963 but we eventually met in league ac on in 1958, the first league clash since 1932. This was a golden age for the derby, with both sides ba ling it out for the tle in the Welsh Na onal League (Wrexham Area), as Town dominated the 1970s including pipping Ruthin to the honour in 1973 via goal difference. However, by the 1980s Town joined the Clwyd League and other than a cup e in 1987 wouldn’t meet un l Denbigh’s promo on to the Cymru Alliance in 1996. We ba led it out regularly over the next 25 years or so, playing in the same division for 11 of those seasons. This me it was Ruthin who took the majority of the bragging rights, with Denbigh winning just three of the last 20 derby matches. That being said, despite relega on in 2019, Town have held the bragging rights with the last mee ng between the sides ending in a 3-0 win for Denbigh on Boxing Day 2018, Lewis Sirrell’s ha rick sending a record Central Park crowd wild during a disappoin ng campaign. The next chapter is s ll to be wri en, and on Boxing Day and with such a storied history it’s sure to be a spectacle at Central Park.

Brief History
Denbigh Town Football Club was formed in 1880 and has remained one of the most popular and highly respected Clubs in North Wales ever since. One of the Club’s finest achievements came in 1924 when they won both the Welsh Amateur Cup and the North Wales Coast Amateur Cup.
A number of minor successes ensued in the subsequent decades until the Club hit a purple patch in the 1970s when they won the Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) Division One Championship four times and the League Cup on five occasions. Town also landed the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1970 and the North Wales Amateur Cup in 1972. The manager through most of this golden period was John Trevor Roberts who remains one of Denbigh Town’s most legendary figures.
After the Club left the Wrexham Area League at the turn of the 1980s and joined the Clwyd League many trophy less years followed. The sleeping giant did not awaken until the 1991/1992 season when Liverpudlian duo Bill Dawson and Rook Cook-Hannah took over the reins at the Club.
In their first season the Club won promotion to the Premier Division, but the biggest highlight was an unforgettable 1-0 North Wales Challenge Cup Victory over the 4th placed HFS Loans League semiprofessionals of Caernarfon Town before an ecstatic crowd at Central Park.
After two seasons in the Clwyd Premier, the Club was promoted to the Fitlock Welsh Alliance League in 1994/95. After finishing 4th in their first season Denbigh Town followed up in style by landing the League Championship and Cookson Cup double, the Club’s finest achievement for almost 20 years. The Club joined the Cymru Alliance in 1996/97 and enjoyed several good seasons at that level. Denbigh joined the Welsh Alliance Leagie for 2002/2003 and finished 3rd, reached the semi-final of the Barritt Cup and won the Alves Cup with Roy Cook-Hannah at the helm. Cook- Hannah resigned in December 2003 and Clwyd Williams & Nick Hailes were installed as joint-managers. The team finished the season in 12th position.
In May 2004 Tim Dyer was appointed manager and in 2005/2006 he guided the team to the Barritt Cup and Cookson Cup double, runners up in the Welsh Alliance League and also finalists in the North Wales Coast FA Challenge Cup. The Club also won the Welsh Alliance Fair Play League for 2005/2006 & 2006/2007. In 2007 Denbigh Town were crowned Welsh Alliance League Champions and Cookson Cup winners.
After Tim Dyer stepped down at the end of the 2008/2009 season Steve Jones was appointed manager with Dean Martin as his assistant. Under the new regime the team finished 10th in the 2009/2010 Cymru Alliance League. Unfortunately, due to the Welsh Premier Super 12, six clubs were relegated from the Welsh Premier and the 3 feeder leagues all promoted a club to the Cymru Alliance. This meant only the top 7 survived in the Cymru Alliance and so Denbigh Town were relegated to the Welsh Alliance League. Jones and his assistant Martin resigned in May 2010.
Brief History continued John James and Andy Lewis were appointed manager and coach for the 2010/2011 season.
Despite relegation the Club started ground development with hard standing area placed all around the perimeter of the ground and floodlights were installed in April 2012.
In 2012/2013 ex-player and captain Richard Williams- Cooke was appointed manager. In his first season Cookie took the club to runners up position in the Welsh Alliance League. The following season the Club won the league, remaining unbeaten throughout the whole league campaign and also won the Mawddach Cup. The Club were promoted to the Cymru Alliance – the Tier 2 level of Welsh football
Cookie resigned in June 2014 due to work and family commitments. A joint management team of Dave Taylor and Terry Ingram were appointed in his place, but they parted company with club a few months later. In September 2014 the Club appointed Elfed Lloyd and 1st team Captain Max Peate as caretaker managers for the rest of that season. Gareth Thomas (Perry) was appointed manager on 21st May 2015, and he led the Club to 3rd position in the Cymru Alliance in season 2015/2016. In the same season Perry also took the Club to the Word Cup Final losing 2-0 to treble winners The New Saints (TNS).
However, in November 2016 the Club parted company with Perry and Eddie Maurice Jones was appointed manager Maurice-Jones took the Club to its highest ever finish in the Cymru Alliance – that of 2nd in the season 2017/2018. However, at the end of that season Maurice-Jones moved to become manager of Rhyl and many of the players followed him.
New joint managers Dewi Llion Jones & Matty Jones had the task of forming a team with new players with only a few weeks left before the start of the season. Despite a valiant effort by the managers and their new team the Club fell into the relegation zone on the last day of the season 2018/2019 and were relegated to the Welsh Alliance.
Matty Jones left the joint managership role in April 2019 and Dewi Llion Jones was appointed sole manager for the season 2019/2020. He appointed former Town player Owain Roberts as his coach. A strong season followed but the Covid 19 pandemic meant the season was cut short and Denbigh were appointed runners up in the league to Holyhead Hotspurs.
The Welsh Alliance League finished in 2019/2020 and Denbigh Town were placed in the new Lock Stock Ardal North West League for the season 2021/22. The club narrowly missed out on the promotion spots in the season 2021/2022 finishing third.
History Football in Ruthin dates back to 1878 when a football club was formed in the town and in 1880 they reached the final of the Welsh Cup only to lose 2-1 to Druids. The club in its present form dates back to 1949 when they joined the newly re-organised Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) as Ruthin British Legion. They joined Division Two, coming runners up in their first year and gaining promotion to Division One. The following year they were runners up in the top Division. The British Legion element of the name was dropped in 1953 and Ruthin Town FC was born. In 1958 the club introduced a reserve team which entered the WNL (Wrexham Area) Division 3. The first team won the first division in 1963/64 and the North Wales Challenge Cup in 1967. The 1972/73 season was an exciting one for the Vale of Clwyd as both Ruthin and Denbigh were contesting the first division title. Denbigh won on goal difference with both teams having won 18, drawn 7 and lost 3. Ruthin, however, won the North Wales Challenge Cup for the second time.
In 1977/78 the first team were relegated from the first division which meant the reserves also had to go down from the second division. The following year the club introduced a third team which played in the Clwyd league. That team was later called the Colts as it joined the WNL (Wrexham Area) division 4 in 1980.1979/80 was a big season for the club as both the first team and reserves were promoted back to the first and second divisions both as champions of their respective leagues. A decade of stability ensued with the three senior teams establishing themselves in their respective leagues with their youth system being set up in 1986. This youth system was to be the making of the club providing a consistent source of players for the senior teams. 17 of the current 20 man first team squad are products of that very youth system. The club currently runs 6 youth teams from under 12's to under 16's it has a thriving junior section a veterans team and the club has recently started a ladies and girls section. It is one of the largest clubs in Wales in terms of player numbers. 1991/92 the first team were runners up to Wrexham Reserves under Glyn Williams and were promoted to the Cymru Alliance. They also won the League Cup that year. Ruthin were ever present in the Cymru Alliance for a further 21 years before being relegated in 2013. Under Phil Hinchcliffe they won the WNL Premier League Cup in 2014 and matched their 1992 result in 2016 by gaining promotion back to the Huws Gray Alliance and winning the Premier League Cup for the second time in three years. The club won the NEWFA Cup in 2018 beating Holywell in the final with Chris Williams as manager. Their best HGA league position was third place in 2003/4 under Tim Dyer. As the second tier of Welsh Football came under the wing of the FAW Ruthin were one the longest serving clubs in the Huws Gray Alliance having been members for 23 of the 28-year history of the league.
