For additional information, visit www.beamfoundationclt.org.

Chapter History Chartered August 1, 1939 in Charlotte, NC, the Beta Nu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has served as a major force in the community since its inception. The Charter Members of the Beta Nu Lambda Chapter are: Mr. Clifton Blake Mr. Charles Gilliard Mr. Gedson Ladson Dr. W.R. Laney

Mr. Louis E. Levi Dr. Eugene Potts Dr. Thomas Watkins Dr. AJ Williams

These men began a legacy of service that we aspire to maintain in our daily dealings with the community. We are charged to be leaders in our community and actively engage the citizens of Charlotte, NC. We accomplish this through a partnership with the B.E.A.M. Foundation and are able to implement a number of our signature programs. Alpha Academy is a program designed to enhance and enrich the lives of 6th-11th grade minority males in the Charlotte area. The mission of the program is to assist young men in achieving academic excellence, social refinement and cultural awareness while preparing them for college. We also work to help them become productive members of society. Each participant in the program will work with mentors who will focus on improving academic performance, interpersonal relationships and professional skills.

Chapter History

The mission of the Alpha Beautillion Program, as sponsored by the B.E.A.M. Foundation, is to assist college-bound seniors within Charlotte and surrounding areas in preparing them for college, securing scholarship funding and presenting them to their local community at a formal event. The program has 4 components: Development Sessions, Mentorship, Scholarship, and the Beautillion Gala. • • • •

The Goals of Beautillion: To recognize the achievements of young African-American and minority men within the community.

To inspire and stimulate further growth, academic excellence, community service learning, and leadership development. To enhance their sense of civic responsibility and appreciation for cultural heritage.

To bring about self-awareness, self-determination, self-actualization and purpose greater than self.

The Beau participates in programs specifically designed with these goals in mind.

Beta Nu Lambda also presents Project Alpha annually, in partnership with the March of Dimes. Project Alpha is designed to provide education and motivation to enhance the knowledge of teenagers through activities pertaining to building healthy relationships. The A+ Coding Academy is a 10-week summer program for middle-school males in the Charlotte community. Through a partnership with Microsoft and Fifth Third Bank, the students are engaged in a curriculum rooted in IT fundamentals. Each week students learn new concepts such as conceptual logic, control structures and programming syntax. The culmination of the summer program is a student project that will be presented to business professionals at the end of the Coding Academy. Working collaboratively with the B.E.A.M. Foundation and the community partnerships they secure is truly beneficial for Beta Nu Lambda. We are extremely appreciative.

Greetings: On behalf of the Brothers of the Beta Nu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., I would like to welcome you to this year’s Alpha Beautillion Scholarship Gala. Tonight, as we celebrate the 2022 Beautillion class, I encourage you to reflect on the tremendous accomplishments of this outstanding group of young men. They have shown themselves to be scholars and community servants that society says is not prevalent with our young Black men. This program is the culmination of months of hard work and learning opportunities for the Beaus. As we prepare to send them off to start the next phase of their lives, I would like to thank each of these young men for their efforts this year and express to them how proud we are of them. As the Beautillion program continues to expand, I am elated by what I see and hear from these talented young men. I have no doubt that each of them will go on to make lasting impacts on society, and I look forward to watching them accomplish their goals. To the parents, I thank you for what you have instilled in these young men and I say job well done. I also thank you for entrusting your sons with us for the past nine (9) months. I want to extend a very special thank you to Brothers Bryan Sturgies and Brian Cyprian for being the driving forces behind the Alpha Beautillion program. I commend you and the committee of brothers and volunteers for finding new and innovative ways to enhance the program’s activities and community impact. Let me also thank the B.E.A.M. Foundation for their partnership. Lastly, I would like to say thank you to the Brothers of Beta Nu Lambda for your ongoing support of this program and the mission of our dear Fraternity. Respectfully Submitted,

Jerel W. Harvey Jerel W. Harvey, President Beta Nu Lambda Chapter Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Salutations Thank you for attending the 2022 Beautillion Scholarship Gala. This event is the culmination of nine months of persistence and new experiences for the Beaus, their Belles, and families. The dedication and support from all entities has been superb! We have enjoyed many wonderful opportunities this year! Beaus participated in powerful workshops related to completing college applications, applying for scholarships, fundraising for college, personality assessments, drug and alcohol awareness, mental well-being, introduction to public speaking, financial literacy, enhancing leadership skills, critical thinking and decision making, and securing financial aid for college. Additionally, Beaus traveled to Tallahassee, Florida for college tours at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University and Florida State University. The Beaus interacted with college students from each of the universities and were engulfed in positive college experiences. In March, Beaus attended a fine arts enrichment event at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center with the Morehouse College Glee Club and the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. Beaus also attended a Mother-Son Tea with their mothers and/or guardians as a special event for Mother’s Day. They learned etiquette strategies and the history of having afternoon tea. In addition to the Beautillion, the B.E.A.M. Foundation sponsors Alpha Academy, a mentoring program for young men in 6th-11th grades, Project Alpha, a program that addresses building healthy relationships and increased responsibility for males and females in middle and high school and the B.E.A.M. Coding Academy, a 10-week summer program designed for minority males between the ages of 11 – 13 to teach the elements of coding and technology development. The educational programs will be enhanced next year with the addition of a Cub Scouts Program for elementary students, a college preparatory program specifically for high school juniors and a Junior National Society of Black Engineers to engage middle school students in activities related to science, technology, engineering, and math. I would like to thank the Beautillion Committee for their dedication and diligence in working with the Beaus and preparing for this signature event. I would also like to thank the B.E.A.M. Foundation for their unwavering support and appreciation for educational programs and activities. We’ve had a remarkable year! Please enjoy your time with us this evening as we celebrate these outstanding young men and their many accomplishments! They are simply amazing!

Sincerely,

Dr. Norris L. Williams Norris L. Williams, Director of Educational Activities Beta Nu Lambda Chapter Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Beautillion Team

Thank you for your support of the 2022 B.E.A.M. Foundation’s Beautillion Scholarship Gala. Tonight is a celebration of the achievements of fifteen of Charlotte’s finest young men. Our Beautillion program is more than tonight’s celebration, it represents the culmination of ten months of workshops, retreats, mentoring, and development. Your presence and support allows our work to continue for future generations. It has been our pleasure to work not only with these young men, but with the team of brothers serving on the committee and as mentors. We believe it is imperative for African-American young men to know that their community stands with them as they transition from high school to college, and from boyhood to manhood. The Beautillion program seeks not only to prepare young men for this transition, but to also honor their often-unnoticed achievements. Our Beautillion is one way we honor those achievements. Once again, thank you for your support of these young men and the B.E.A.M. Foundation, Inc. We look forward to seeing you at our future events. Sincerely,

CONGRATULATIONS BAYLA!

Well, son, I’ll tell you: Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair. It’s had tacks in it, And splinters, And boards torn up, And places with no carpet on the floor—Bare. But all the time, I’se been a-climbin’ on, And reachin’ landin’s, And turnin’ corners, And sometimes goin’ in the dark Where there ain’t been no light.

So Bayla, don’t you turn back. Don’t you set down on the steps ’Caus e you finds it’s kinder hard. Don’t you fall now— For I’se still goin’, honey, I’se still climbin’, And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.

LOVE MOM!

There will be tough times and struggles, but you will make it through. Those are the times that will build you to be a better you. ~ M. Kee
