THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

“A room should never allow the eye to settle in one place. It should smile at you and create fantasy.” – JUAN MONTOYA

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Our design muscles get a workout daily, as we decide what to acquire at the design shop, which treasure to discard from days gone by, and what the latest project to either build or modify is. This constant “design on the brain” is why we talk incessantly about our apartments and houses. We have this need to prove that we can fully express ourselves in our home, all the while making our daily lives easier and more enjoyable. As you read the pages and flip through the pictures, we hope that you find inspiration for the rooms in your life -- perhaps for a space that takes you away from your daily routine, a haven for your imagination. Outdoor living is what we celebrate. You know those days we sit on the back porch, with cocktail in hand, wishing our small back yard pool had that “wow” factor? With a little imagination, you can have the yard space your neighbors will envy. Looking for a summer project? Magnificent views are the trend. Glass, glass, and more glass will open a space like none other. If you’re a doer, then get started. If you’re a dreamer wanting to hire a doer, the time to plan is now! You will never regret letting more light in and basking in the view. As always, we show the talent that the El Paso/Las Cruces region has to offer. We hope you ask yourself where the breathtaking iron staircase came from, or who designed that ceiling that reminds us of days gone by. No matter the size of your home, it always says YOU. Everything is blooming, enjoy the spring!

P.S. If you have before and after shots, we want to see them. Contact us at info@thecitymagazineelp.com

oseph and Cindy Najera are two creative individuals living amongst us in the Sun City. Joseph, the

owner of Joseph Homes, spends his

time building and designing homes

here in El Paso alongside his wife

Cindy who also has her own children’s

photography business on the side. Many

years ago, the couple decided they wanted to build their own home where they could raise their three boys and one girl and enjoy the simple pleasures of family life; but Joseph and Cindy wanted a truly inspired home. So they decided to spend some time travelling around Europe, in Italy and Spain, to study architectural elements of these fantastic countries and soak in the years of art and culture that flowed from every pour of the cities they visited. “What we arrived at is a blend of Spanish and Italian style – definitely Mediterranean, but customized to suit our family,” Cindy explained. Built by Joseph Homes in 2011, the Mediterranean influence is easy to see even when looking at the home from the outside. With an iconic front courtyard, charming patios, high chimneys, and columns, it’s clear the home has beautiful Tuscan charm that only serves to compliment it’s southwest location. Altogether the home has five bedrooms, five baths, and a study that serves as Cindy’s photography studio – of which the interior was all designed by Cindy herself. As far as features, the space has magnificent Mahogany

The kitchen cabinets and built in’s in the living space were made from fine alder wood cabinetry by Universal Cabinets and are beautifully matched by the rich exposed ceiling beams that flow into the formal dining room. The kitchen is equipped with stainless steel Wolf Subzero Appliances from Builder’s Source. One iconic feature of the kitchen is the rhomboid cracked backsplash, which Cindy had custom made and shipped in from

California. In all the production of the backsplash took two months, but the effect it evokes was certainly worth the wait. This backsplash mirrors fine granite countertops and the rod iron chandelier that hangs over the expansive center island. This space is great because it offers the best in modern kitchen amenities with a beverage fridge and a BUILDER: JOSEPH HOMES INTERIOR DESIGN: CINDY NAJERA SOLAR: BORDER SOLAR CABINETRY: UNIVERSAL CABINETS LIGHTING: LONGHORN LIGHTING APPLIANCES: BUILDER’S SOURCE TILE: EMSER TILE ALL CUSTOM DOORS AND HARDWOOD FLOORS: EL PASO WOOD PRODUCTS INC.

The high ceilings, the iron chandelier, the exquisite tapestries and rich exposed beams high above greet guests into this warm, inviting home. Inside the more intimate areas of the house are the bedrooms. The master suite contains the Najera’s stately four-poster bed, his and hers closets and a warm fireplace sitting area. Complete with a patio and elegant dark-wood French doors, the room also pours into the master bathroom which houses gorgeous stone columns, and a large Jacuzzi. Other noteworthy features from the bedrooms in the home

I think her room is my dream room from when I was a child, I think I spend more time in there than she does,” laughed Cindy. Outside of the home, the back patio contains an outdoor fridge, grilling area, and a swimming pool, which is perfect for the family’s needs. The Najera’s home is also solar powered. “We built the house knowing that we would eventually go solar. A 10-Kilowatt commercial grade system was installed by Border Solar on the flat part of the roof and we couldn’t be happier with it. Our electric bills have gone from about $500 a month to under $150 a month – and that even includes

5 tips to fix up any forclosure

THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

Looking around, there are some amazing deals to be found in the wake of the economic tailspin that has taken the country by storm in the past few years, specifically in the realm of real estate. Finding a foreclosed home is an excellent investment for the savvy house flipper who has the skills and know-how. If you are looking into flipping your own foreclosed find and don’t plan on living in the home after you have finished, the trick is fixing up the home so that you put in enough sweat equity to effectively sell the house to a new family – but at a price that enables you to turn a profit. With this goal in mind, here are five tips to help you get your foreclosure off the ground and fixed up and ready for a whole new chapter of life for a new family.

#1: Kitchens and Bathrooms For as long as the business of real estate has been alive, the prime area of concern for most homebuyers are the kitchens and bathrooms. If the home you are seeking to flip has outdated hardware, a tarnished old sink, or fixtures that are out-of-this world ugly, plan and put your money into these two rooms. People love to see new and clean so do a little research and find out what’s trending in the world of sinks, light fixtures, shower and bath fixtures and kitchen appliances. Upgrading these will increase the appeal of the home for perspective buyers, giving you a competitive edge over the other homes they may be looking at and the house you are flipping a whole new look. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

It’s amazing the effect a new ceiling fan can have for a bedroom, or the way new switch plates effects the overall look of the entire room. To save you some trouble of searching for what’s hot in the market right now, this year’s trend is all about the accentuation of gleaming, flawless gold fixtures and accessories in your home. old and rusty and you’re tired of it, replacing it for a shiny, modern gold one is a way to create a truly royal lavatory. The point is for the look of the fixture to be as bright and clean as possible, so it immediately catches your eye as you enter. The other fixtures you can remodel are the head and handles of the shower. It will not only bring a lively effect to the entire bathroom, but it will ensure a posh element is present. Another way to incorporate gold into your restroom is to add a dazzling bathroom accessory kit. These lustrous tones add flare as a compliment to your bathroom in an effortless way.

Cooking for the Winner There is nothing more beautiful than the right motivation to cook. And that motivation is a stunning kitchen, good cooking equipment and a classy apron that shows how pretty you are. Adding gold into your kitchen can be easy and quick and is better when it shines through the little things. Don’t worry about the gold not matching your kitchen; it is suppose to be a secondary color more than the main theme of your kitchen. Let your gold gleam through the kitchen accessories you

have on display. From cookie jars, to display canisters, to a modern golden tea set: it will light up your kitchen from the moment you display these items. If you plan to change up the fixtures, having simple hanging lamps glowing in gold will define the aesthetic taste of your kitchen. Adding a golden hood above your stove and a golden faucet and handles is the ultimate way to keep your kitchen modern, beautiful and above all … elegant.

Gold fixtures can extend to every part of the house. However, where these items do sparkle best are in your bathroom and kitchen. If you are looking to add this theme to other rooms, just follow the rule of simplicity and minimalism in your golden accessories. pink brick-road. Immediately entering the house, a prodigious amount of art is carefully splashed all over the house, having a total of two living rooms, two dining rooms, two bedrooms, a minibar, and a remodeled kitchen. This kitchen used to be rustic and unequipped, but it was reconstructed into a hyper-modern kitchen made for fine dining. The counters are made with fine gray marble and the cabinets were replaced with white ones with sparkling silver fixtures. The appliances, such as the fridge, the stove and its hood, are made with special iron in order to last for decades; still shining and functioning as if it were the first day they were installed. The homeowners furnished their home in art and all living rooms and dining rooms project that. The main living room consists of antique bookcases, desks, and furniture all from the renaissance era. Inside the stunning, wooded furniture are a number of small sculptures, candelabras, history books, Mexican Calaveras and crucifixes all gearing towards an eclectic theme. In the walls of this living room lie mainly religious paintings from the renaissance depicting the last days of Jesus Christ. Also standing out of the wall are a couple of portraits from the baroque era. It certainly is quite a lot to put in a living room, but this space breathes on its own due to the history that has been encapsulated. The main dining room resembles the one in which King Arthur used to feast with Merlin and his knights. The big and bold dining table is definitely appropriate for any big celebration dinner. A much simpler look exists in the walls and around this room since the table itself irradiates so much energy. The gracious chairs with big armrests are fit for a King and anyone who deserves to be acclaimed. The minibar is one of the three components that came with the extension of the house. This bar is made from the same materials the kitchen was made but it overlooks the windows that Ruth designed in order to bring light. This open space consists of another living room and a dining room. These two are much more down-to-earth. The second dining room has a blue and white dining table with a more earthy touch to match the peachy living room right next to it. These two rooms are touched by so much natural light since the windows for the remodeled area are twice as big as the original ones.

Artists like Joel-Peter Witkin, Walter Martin and Paloma Munoz, Mark Beard, and Jean-Michel Basquiat stand out. It almost feels like a sense of irony is being transmitted since these artists make you feel emotions most artists in the mainstream wouldn’t even dare. The main bedroom holds the same essence of satire because it contains a bunch of art that does not match each other. It is like a museum without dividing the art into neither eras nor styles. If you take a look at world-renowned fashion designer Valentino, his apartment in New York Fifth Avenue has exactly the same taste this one does. This only proves that your house and your taste does not have to be defined. You choose to unlabel your home by decorating it exactly like you want it, with whatever you want. Not many houses like this exist since the mainstream is progressively taking over popular culture, but there are those few brave ones that know precisely how to go the opposite way in the most of fabulous manners.

Wrought Iron sconces, electrical wire plates and hinges throughout the house were also handmade for the Harveys. The outdoor areas of the Harvey-Mattox home inspire cocktails with friends and long days of yard games. The yard off of the master bedroom is referred to as the “turtle yard” because it was once home to box turtles that were found on the road to Alamogordo, N.M. in the 1930s. Generations of box turtles thrived in that yard until the 1990s. The main yard has a bricked area behind a Chinese elm tree where once upon a time, there was a wading pool. The back yard provides a clear view into Mexico. There will never be another home like 3100 Gold, but now El Pasoans have the opportunity to pour their passion into their own homes at The Fields. The plan for The Fields ensures that this new community will be as vibrant and timeless as they day it comes to life. Like those beautiful El Paso neighborhoods, The Fields will stand the test of time, and perhaps most importantly, it will encourage El Paso families to think of those touches that we once considered when building our personal dwellings – strong bones, unique features and thoughtful design. Those interested in building their own timeless time capsule at The Fields can visit FieldsElPaso.com for more information.

he Sun City received a visit from America’s favorite son only four months after he had become arguably the most famous person in the

world. It was September 24, 1927 when “Lucky Lindy,” Charles Lindbergh, came to visit El Paso as part of a goodwill tour following his historic trans-Atlantic flight. In preparation for the visit, Mayor R.E. Thomason planned a festive reception for the famous flier, which included asking 10 World War I aviators to drive official cars in a motorcade downtown. This objective became the cause for these flying men and a few other supporters to meet on September 16, 1927 to form the El

Paso Aero Club.

The celebration was a success and the inspiring Lindbergh encouraged the city to continue it’s long tradition of being a transportation hub by opening itself up to the skies. As a result of Lindbergh’s historical visit, the El Paso Aero Club appointed ex-army fliers Stacy Hinkle and Fred Wilson, to draft plans with the objective to get a municipal airport, commercial airlines and airmail service for El Paso. El Paso chose for its airport the only city land available, and thus the Sun City’s first steps towards the sky were placed in a 260-acre tract formed by the intersection of Fred Wilson road and the Southern Pacific railroad tracks. To the east lay the Cavalry and Artillery drill ground, now known as Biggs Field that had been established as a military flying field in 1918 because of the depredations of Pancho Villa. The results of the work of Hinkle and Wilson led to a plan that included $25,000 for clearing and grading, a 60 by 100 ft. hangar; boundary lights and a rotating searchlight to guide pilots. At the time however no money was available, but a county ruling declaring an airport as a public highway lead to the clearing of the land and then a $32,000 bond issue was created to finance the rest. Within one year the primitive port with one small hangar and no artificial runways, was completed and Mayor Thompson, under a makeshift striped tent, spoke proudly before a crowd of 10,000 people who could see the future of El Paso aviation on September 8, 1928, “Today we drive another stake in the progress of El Paso. This city today becomes one of the country’s future air centers.” As part of the festivities Brig. Gen. George V. Moseley, Ft. Bliss Commander,

attended the ceremony and at his request the Army sent 21 airplanes from Kelly Field to thrill the large crowd with aerial acrobatics. In another touch of aviation history, only three days after the dedication Amelia Earhart landed in the Sun City. During its nearly 87 years of operation, the El Paso International Airport has continued to be a part of aviation history. Only 40 years after it’s dedication it had grown from a $25,000 investment into a $30 million complex. It was the same, in fact, when El Paso became the first city in the nation to have a 130-foot air traffic control tower. This tower once again made history in 2000, as it became the first control tower nation to operate a new radar system known as STARS, a technological upgrade that improves air traffic control and safety. The airport continues to push boundaries to this day as it serves as the home for NASA’s Training Ground for Shuttle Astronauts. These future space travelers train daily by practicing landings on simulated shuttlecraft. As a result of this collaboration, NASA helped commemorate the 85th anniversary of the EPIA in September of 2013 by dedicating a permanent exhibition to the Forward Operating Location Hangar, which has been part of the facility since 1978. The El Paso International Airport thus provides an interesting link between El Paso’s long past and intriguing future. With a history as a hub along both the Camino Real, running from Mexico City to Santa Fe, and the Butterfield Trail, which links St. Louis to San Francisco, El Paso is once more serving as a transportation center, with the airport serving as a link from the earth to the sky and even beyond. The humble origins of the one hangar facility have given way to a 6800-acre facility with three runways that serves millions of people and multiple airlines. The El Paso International Airport continues to serve to this day, not only as a base for flight but also as a reminder of our aspirations. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

with these awesome additions. One of the biggest trends right now are natural pools. It is believed that these kind of pools were first seen in Germany and now they are making a huge splash in the US. Imagine having a beautiful pond in your backyard with water lilies and reeds included, that will gorgeously accent your home as well as keep you fresh in the hottest days of

the year. The fascinating thing about natural pools is that they don’t require chemicals for cleaning, because the plants in your pool will act as a filter and will keep your water clean and crystalline. Not only are these pools beautiful, but they are also a green alternative to your regular chemical-filled swimming pools. The organic vibe, the rocks that frame the pool, and the pretty vegetation that is added to the pool will make you feel like one with Mother Nature. If you don’t have a big backyard to enlarge your existing pool, don’t worry – there are other things that you can add to it to make it pop. Grottos are a great way to upgrade your swimming pool and give it a makeover. Grottos are artificial caves that can be added around a portion of the pool with a refreshing cascade waterfall, or placed on top of the hot tub to hide it and create a more intimate setting. If you really want something more “out of the box,” put a grotto on top of your hot tub with a cascade that flows down from it right into the pool. Your spa will be covered in style and you www.thecitymagazineelp.com

will have a really beautiful waterfall that you can get under as you enter your hot tub. Grottos might be a big project for some people, so here’s another feature that is a little simpler and will still add some great style to your swimming pool. Forget about boring water fixtures and make your pool a statement with a fountain. The options are endless, you can use an iron sculpture with a really modern feel, or something more classic like a stone figure. You can take inspiration from the gorgeous European fountains or even from the fountains at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. If you have a vintage fixture or sculpture that you’ve been wanting to use, this is the perfect idea – try converting an old fire hydrant, or a beautiful mud vase. If you don’t have anything of your own that you can use, there are a lot of websites that sell sculpture fountains for pools and are just waiting to be installed. Don’t be shy, try to add something unique and cool to your pool. If you want more ideas you can always Pinterest some pools and get inspiration from there, there’s even TV shows that can help you like “Insane Pools” or “The Pool Master” on Animal Planet. So go ahead and give your pool a makeover and be the host of a lot of epic pool parties this summer!

t’s that time of year again El Paso and if you haven’t taken a look at your outdoor areas and assessed what needs an upgrade, it’s definitely time to do so. Over the last few months you may have seen them: the photos

of the big built-in grills and outdoor fireplaces and who could forget the built-in pizza ovens? Now’s your time to take those photos and make them a reality in your outdoor space. So whether you are hiring a contractor to remodel your backyard or DIYing the project yourself, there is no better time to give yourself an outdoor upgrade. Let’s face it, when you live in the Sun City, you have no excuse not to have a lavish outdoor kitchen to suit your every need and enable you and the family to spend as much time in the great outdoors as possible. And with Father’s Day just around the corner – what better gift is there than to surprise dad with an all new outdoor man-space where he can fire up and grill to his heart’s content?

Tip 1 A lot will depend on your budget but a key element to take into consideration when thinking about your grilling space is shade. If you don’t have a preexisting patio that provides shade, this maybe a feature you might consider incorporating so that as you grill, the sun isn’t something that chases you inside.

Tip 2 If you are having stone built in’s installed, consider also having some built in space included for flowerbeds and other plant life. These little details will help you and those you entertain relax as you soak in all the glorious sunshine that your new outdoor space offers you.

Tip 3 Another item to consider when designing where you want your grill and other outdoor kitchen appliances is how the elements will affect them once they are installed. Protect your investments and make sure your new shiny appliances are shielded from sun and rain damage.
