medicine, breaking ground on some remarkable research and creating an unparalleled future for medicine right here in the Southwest. It’s also inspiring to know that there are so many doctors from El Paso who are involved with non-profits here in the Sun City, in Juárez and all over the world, helping children and those less fortunate without expecting anything in return. This issue also highlights the work of a very special man, Eric Evans, CEO for the Sierra Providence Healthcare System here in El Paso. It was an honor to spend time with this man. In the short time we were together I personally observed how committed he is not only to his job and his employees, but also to his family. Those who know him well speak of him as an excellent father and the love he carries for his wife and children is simply inspiring. In addition to this, as an employer it was interesting to see the respect and rapport he has built with every individual and member of the staff he came into contact with as we walked the hospital halls together. Under his leadership, I, and the rest of El Paso wait to see the exciting things he will continue to accomplish at the helm of Sierra Providence. Altogether this issue showcases the promising future that medicine has in our city and as El Paso and our esteemed medical community continue to grow, we look forward to even more advancements as we move into a new and exciting era of healthcare.

ERIC EVANS A New Era of Healthcare Leadership for the

Sun City | By: MICHAEL C. GRAHAM, JD, CLTC photography by: DAV ANMED |

26

www.thecitymagazineelp.com

April, 2015

T

ransformational leadership is often defined by two principal characteristics: change and execution. In its simplest form, it centers around the leadership traits and strengths required to lead an organization through some period of required change, while inspiring and helping the people within the organization to execute that change as effectively and efficiently as possible. By virtually any measure, the healthcare industry is beginning a period of what most people agree will be an extended transformation. From how patients are billed, to how facilities are structured and staffed, to how providers are compensated and trained; it is all going to change. Within our community, the leader tasked with guiding and executing the Sierra Providence Healthcare system, part of the Tenet Healthcare system, through this period of change is Eric Evans. Evans recently took over as the CEO for the system within the El Paso market, putting him at the helm of the three current hospitals, the future hospital in the northwest part of El Paso, as well as the other facilities and the several thousand professionals that make the entire system run. In other words, one hell of a big challenge.

To better understand how Mr. Evans came to this role, and where he sees the Tenet Healthcare System going in the future, both within the El Paso community and as a whole, a bit of background on the myriad of healthcare changes that have happened recently is required, as well as a bit of information about Evans’ experiences and background. Let us begin with the healthcare industry as a whole.

n inspiration is born inside the soul, and it is funny

because you almost feel how tiny rays

of light spread through your body. You feel how it moves you and how it progressively starts to lead you in a path; your gut feels enthusiastic too. Choosing nursing as your route is something that requires an immense amount of stamina, emotional strength, knowledge, and above all … lots of passion. “The best part of being a nurse is that you can make a difference, and you get so much more than you ever give because it’s just wonderful to help people,” says Dr. Jeanne M. Novotny, Ph. D., RN, FAAN who is a Professor and the Founding Dean of the Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing. The school just opened its new state-of-the-art facilities this past February located right in front of the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, also a branch from Texas Tech University of Health Sciences in El Paso. The GGHSON offers a Bachelor of Science in nursing that can be obtained with an intensive 16-month program, and another undergraduate program for students who are already a RN (Registered Nurse) who want to obtain a BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing). The pioneering facilities located at the corner of Concepcion and Alberta Street contain such cutting-edge technology that faculty from other universities want to visit the building to get ideas, and its not even four months old. “We have wonderful simulation labs, and we work with emergency medicine so the students have the opportunity to practice,” says Dr. Novotny. The experienced faculty from the GGHSON set up scenarios for the nursing students, collaborating with physicians from the Paul L. Foster School and residents from hospitals, in order to experience what it really is like to take care of someone. The laboratories contain everything a hospital would have and contain first class mannequins that are able to talk, sweat, turn blue or red, move and even show symptoms of seizure and range from small-sized cute mannequins, to 400-pound mannequins. The entire simulation process is video www.thecitymagazineelp.com

into nursing. A fourth of the students from the school are men and Dr. Novotny is also determined to create a diverse faculty so the students can look up to the achievements these nurses have taken throughout their careers. Another stereotype would be the wage inequality issue, but in the world of nursing that is another factor that does not really exist. “Men and women in nursing are paid the same if they have the same level of education and the same responsibilities,” says Dr. Novotny. Many nurses and physicians are known to be part of the medical field due to an event that happened to them. Some of them are retired firefighters and paramedics who admire what goes on behind the emergency doors right after they bring the wounded person to the hospital. Others might have grown up with a person already in the medical field

and hoped to become a person like them one day. And others had their lives saved and were inspired to bring that same joy that was brought to them. In the past, nurses would mostly dedicate

themselves to the clinical aspect and wouldn’t advance their education because of the circumstances of the times they lived in. In 2015, Dr. Novotny now hopes that more nurses look forward to getting their doctoral degrees so there can exist more experienced and qualified faculty to teach these passionate students, who will become the nurses of the future. “I really believe that nursing is the health care career of the 21st century,” says Dr. Novotny. There are about 90 students at the school and Dr. Novotny predicts that by 2020 they’ll have about 600 students with a more

Southwest Plastic surgery Tech, and Alina Palladino, Marketing and Public Relations, help their husbands run a booming practice and are the epitome of team playing as they thrive in delivering the best in cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery in our area. Dr. Agullo also currently serves as Clinical Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery and Dr. Palladino serves as Clinical Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery, both at the Texas Tech Department of Surgery. When they’re not teaching, they’re offering the most advanced techniques in plastic surgery available in El Paso. From SERI internal biosilk bras and corsets, which improve the results of breast augmentation and tummy tuck procedures, to the latest in buttock augmentation techniques like Brazilian Butt Lifts and Buttock Implants, these surgeons are offering the latest and greatest in cosmetic plastic surgery. The future looks even brighter when looking at current research into stem cell technologies for the advancement of cosmetic plastic surgery. Tissue Perfusion, Platelet Rich Plasma, and Adipose Derived Stem Cell techniques are on the forefront of what these doctors are offering for those looking for what’s trending in preventative aging procedures. As Dr. Palladino asserts, “We may not make you live longer, but we make you live better.” So, for anyone looking for the best and most qualified plastic surgeons in town, you won’t have to travel far. We’re privileged to have two brilliant practitioners available right here in our backyards! And so it goes ... things really do happen for a reason and lucky for us, the whole team at Southwest Plastic Surgery was destined to make El Paso a powerful ingredient in their winning recipe for success.

Innovation and Technology Driving the Cardwell Collaborative | By: AUSTIN SAVAGE |

midst all the discourse of ballparks and water parks and, well, park parks, it is easy to see how a piece of land allocated for a biomedical technology park can go over looked. Such is the case when the El Paso City Council set aside 13 acres of property for the Medical Center of

the Americas Foundation, but with ground having been broken on the upcoming facility it will no longer be easy to overlook. That’s because in place of the run down 440 acres off of I-10 in central El Paso will arise a state of the art facility, a cutting edge center of biomedical innovation know as the Cardwell Collaborative. Ground has been broken and construction begun, all in the hopes of bringing 21st century technology and impactful economic growth to an area in need. The expansive campus is not even intended to tear down existent buildings, but to include many of the longstanding businesses, showing a commitment not only to the idea of economic development, but to the people of the community who have been counting on the arrival of the facility since murmurings were made over a decade ago. The patience shown by the optimistic and the persistence shown by those in the MCA Foundation community will be rewarded in the spring of 2016, as the estimated $29-million modern medical miracle will arise. The hope is to push so far forward into the future that visitors to the center may even be greeted and directed by a supercomputer upon arrival. Beyond the flash and glitz of owning one of the world’s great supercomputers is the practical business of, well, business. The facility will be designed to offer space to lease to associated entities. With the Cardwell Collaborative, named after Jack Cardwell a business mogul and philanthropist, as the center of the hub, Texas Tech and the University Medical Center have been looking into leasing space within the building as well as purchasing nearby property. Of course all this upcoming development will require a workforce to construct and install, thus the Cardwell is proving to be an economic boon before it has even arrived and it will undoubtedly continue to be one as, according to El Paso Inc.’s Robert Gray, the MCA Foundation has started working towards integrating schools such as Jefferson High School, and Silva Health Magnet High School, and even El Paso Community College in creating collaborative programs and initiatives that provide opportunities for the students, while developing necessary tools for the MCA Foundation. The Cardwell Collaborative is proving to be an intriguing integration of old and new as part of El Paso’s continuing push into the 21st century. It is seemingly a study in contradiction as a cutting-edge facility in a formerly rundown part of town that is combining some of the most celebrated minds in their fields and associating them with those of aspiring teenage thinkers … but it is this exciting blend that celebrates the past, while focusing on the future, that makes the Cardwell Collaborative one of the most exciting collaborations the southwest has ever seen.

exposure to the sun can truly injure the eyes possibly leading to conditions like: • Macular Degeneration - damage to the retina that can lead to age related blindness. • Cataracts - a clouding of the eye’s natural lenses often triggered by overexposure to UV-B rays. • Photokeratitis - result of over exposure to UV-B rays from long days on the course or hiking the Franklins. This condition can be painful and even lead to temporary blindness. • Pterygium “surfers eye” - a pink non cancerous growth forming in the whites of the eye.

“Pterygium is very common in El Paso,” adds Dr. Ramirez. “The growth develops over the cornea upsetting vision and can be unsightly.” Dr. Ramirez is no stranger to lengthy exposure to the sun. He enjoys his weekly golf outing and advocates for sporting wide-brimmed hats and UV-A or UV-B protected sunglasses. “There are no FDA regulations on companies who claim their sunglasses are UV safe. You can go into a gas station and buy a pair of five-dollar shades that claim they’re UV-A

protected but I recommend the technology that brands like Maui Jim, Ray Ban and Oakley bring especially if you plan on being outdoors for an prolonged amount of time,” Dr. Ramirez advises. Terms like polarized certainly sound sexy but be warned this type of lens only shields the glare and although one might reason sunglasses with extremely dark lenses offer protection, it is in fact the lenses that are clear that will help fight dangerous rays.

To provide suitable defense against harmful rays sunglasses should block out 99 to 100% of both UV-A and UV-B radiation, screen out 75 to 90% of visible light and be entirely matched in color and free of distortion and imperfection. What about those designer shades that are so stylishly appealing? Surely we don’t have to forgo fashion to shield the windows to the soul. You can take your Prada, wayfarers, and aviator frames and have them altered with UV-A and UV-B lenses with Dr. Ramirez. Stylish, smart and safe! UV damage is cumulative over a lifetime. With this in mind, it’s particularly important to protect children’s eyes from the sun. Children spend much more time outdoors than adults. “Kids eyes are most at risk for UV damage,” warns Dr. Ramirez. However getting them to wear protective sunglasses can be challenging so try glasses that are kid friendly like Hello Kitty, Disney or Marvel Heroes. El Paso is far too beautiful for anyone to stay hidden indoors. Those who choose an active lifestyle will no doubt venture out and it’s vital to protect our bodies against harmful elements. Helmets are encouraged for cycling, hats are a must for golf, but when it comes to protecting our eyes one must be thorough and do their homework to ensure they’re adequately protected. When it comes to the damaging effects from the suns rays one should not turn a blind eye.

You’re too stressed. When your body is under stress, it holds on to fat. Especially if you’re skipping meals. When your body doesn’t know when the next meal will be, it stores fat just in case. When you’re stressed your cortisol levels rise which increases abdominal fat, elevates blood pressure, and leads to insulin resistance. Try to get more sleep to help alleviate stress and bring down cortisol levels.

t is a beautiful Saturday afternoon and you are enjoying the view of the mountains and the acres of grape vines – all while sipping a glass of delightful red wine. A guitarist provides beautiful background music to accompany lively conversation with good friends. Where are you? France, Spain, Italy? No, your journey is much shorter. Just off Highway 28 between El Paso and Las Cruces, down a dusty gravel road lies the hidden gem of Sombra

Antigua Winery, tucked away in New Mexico’s oldest commercial vineyard where wines have been produced sine the 1600s. David Fisher and Theresa Olguin-Fisher are the owners of Sombra Antigua Vineyard and Winery; a family owned and operated business, where over 5,000 vines grow on eight acres of perfect grape producing soil that resembles the wine producing areas of Spain. They have run the vineyard since 2008, and in 2012 opened their tasting room. All but two of the employees are family. Theresa and David are engineers who decided to open a boutique winery because

Etiquette

The Art of Listening

April, 2015

| By: JOANN WARDY |

The foundation of all good conversation lies in the ability to listen. Here are some tips: • Listen with interest even if you are bored. Common courtesy shows respect on your part and consideration for others. Showing you are bored or disinterested is rude and offensive. Poor listening skills make for undesirable employees and the loss of millions of business dollars. • Make listening time learning time. It is important to stay in the moment and concentrate on what is being said. Each conversation is an opportunity to learn and enrich ourselves. • When dating or meeting new people many times the moment is lost because we become self-absorbed and we forget to listen and acknowledge the feelings of the other person. Seared Sesame-Ginger Ahi Tuna with Organic Roasted Asparagus, Cherry Tomatoes and Baby Pearl Onions SERVES: 4 Ingredients 4 (6-8 ounce) Ahi Tuna (3/4 inch thick) fresh or water-packed cold-water fish 4 tbsp. of dark sesame oil 4 tbsp. of Bragg Amino Acids (a healthy substitute for soy sauce) 2 tbsp. of Grated fresh ginger 2 Garlic cloves (minced) 2 Organic green onions (thinly sliced) Reserve a few slices for garnishing 2 tsp. of lime- juice 4 tbsp. sesame seeds (toasted, and black and white sesame seeds) 1 tsp. of fresh cracked pepper 1 tsp. of sea salt 8 Organic heirloom cherry tomatoes 1 Bunch of organic asparagus 8 Baby organic pearl onions (pealed) 5 tbsp. olive oil Directions Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Mix the sesame oil, Bragg Amino Acids, ginger, garlic, green onions and lime juice in a glass bowl or non-metal bowl. Coat the tuna on both sides and cover the bowl and refrigerate for one hour. Toast the sesame seeds in a stainless steel or cast iron pan until lightly brown. Remove the seeds and allow them to cool on a large plate, add cracked pepper. Prepare the asparagus by washing them and then blotting them dry so they will roast and not steam in the pan. Cut off the bottom about one inch. Spread the asparagus in a single layer in the baking pan and add the heirloom cherry tomatoes and baby pearl onions. Begin by drizzling olive oil all over the asparagus and then add the sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Roast the asparagus, onions and tomatoes for about 12-15 minutes. Be sure the oven is already hot so the asparagus will begin to brown on the outside first without overcooking and getting too soft. On the side, add the olive oil to a skillet and allow it to get hot. Coat the Ahi tuna in the sesame seeds you toasted and add cracked pepper to taste. Then add the Ahi Tuna to the hot skillet. Cook the Tuna 2-3 minutes on each side so that the Ahi is seared on the outside and rare on the inside. Serve with the roasted organic asparagus, baby pearl onions and heirloom cherry tomatoes and add the remaining sesame seeds on top of the vegetables. Garnish with the remaining green onion.

THREE TIPS

April, 2015

beaut y

for Flawless Foundation Application | By: MATTHEW ABRAHAM |

As spring arrives and summer is just around the corner, many women look to find a makeup foundation that will look fresh and youthful while staying put through heat and humidity. Here are three tips for making sure your foundation looks gorgeous throughout the day in any weather.

Picking the perfect primer Primers are great way to create a base to ensure the smooth application as well as the longevity of your foundation. There are variety of primers available on the market now targeted to perform a variety of different tasks, from correcting tone to diminishing pores as well as fine lines and wrinkles. While choosing a primer, it is important to consider the ingredients list to ensure that the primer you choose is one designed to perform for your specific needs. Arbonne’s Makeup Primer ($40) has a variety of vitamin-rich antioxidants, which help prevent your makeup from changing color as it oxidizes throughout the day. For dry skin, Laura Mercier Mineral Foundation Primer ($32) has aloe vera and glycerin to keep skin moisturized and hydrated throughout the day. If your skin suffers from redness, Smashbox Photo Finish Color Correcting Primer ($39) comes in a green tone to even out redness and blotchy skin. Also try: L’oreal Paris Magic Perfecting Base ($11.99), E.L.F. Mineral Infused Face Primer ($6).

Picking the perfect brush/sponge Blending your foundation with the right brush or sponge can make all the difference in ensuring an even, seamless foundation application. When choosing a foundation brush, it is important to look at the bristles. The Real Techniques Expert Face Brush ($8.99) is made from ultra-plush taklon bristles which apply cream or liquid foundations with speed and ease giving skin an airbrushed pixelated look. Becca’s The One Perfecting Brush ($49) is made from high quality natural goat hair. These non-porous bristles prevent the product from absorbing into the brush, allowing perfect application without wasting any product. The unique 3.5 inch horizontal design of this brush allows you to cover the entire face quickly and makes this brush extremely versatile in terms of use as a 101

foundation, powder, bronzer, contour, or even blush brush. The Beautyblender sponge ($19.99) is an egg-shaped, non-disposable, high-definition cosmetics sponge. The unique makeup applicator has an open cell structure which fills with minimal amounts of water when wet, allowing for a smooth, seamless application of foundation while not wasting product. Also try: Urban Decay’s Good Karma Optical Blurring Brush ($25), Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge ($5.99).

Picking the perfect setting powder/spray The final step for flawless foundation is finishing off and locking in your look so it last throughout the day and even until the very end of your night out on the town. High definition powders, such as Make Up For Ever’s HD Microfinish Powder ($34), were designed for high definition video for television and film. They help to set the foundation and provide a slightly matte finish to skin without changing or adding to the color of your foundation. These powders come in one universal shade and can truly soften and blur the appearance of fine lines and imperfections. It’s important to use a light hand and thoroughly blend when using HD powder as it can photograph as white under flash photography. If you prefer a powder that can provide a natural, light coverage to set and touch up your foundation, a mineral based baked powder such as MAC’s Mineralize Skinfinish Natural ($32) will do the job perfectly. This powder provides a “dimensional yet natural-matte finish” that will keep your foundation locked in place and flawless for hours. Also try: E.L.F. Studio High Definition Powder ($6), Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Powder Foundation ($12.59).

A line skirts Bring back the 50s with a cute, stylish A-line skirt. Almost every runway at New York Fashion Week had them, from Michael Kors to DKNY the A line skirts were one of the hottest trends for the spring/summer 2015 season. The shape of the skirt is timeless and it’s something your mom and grandma used to wear, so why not bring vintage back? At the Michael Kors show the models

wore these skirts with bold yellow floral prints, textured fabrics and nude sandals.

Get the max out of here Maxi skirts are not something you want to wear this season. Unless you’re comfortable with the illusion of having bigger hips than you really do, and you’re extremely happy with swiping the streets with your skirt, avoid using maxi skirts. They usually look sloppy and they get extremely dirty at the bottom, not a good look ... ever!

in

In- Golden girls Strutting down the runway we saw a lot of bold prints, and florals for spring (groundbreaking!) but one of the nice surprises that the spring/summer collections for 2015 brought, was that the majority of this prints were yellow. Yellow is a color that might be hard to pull off, but it was the hottest color of the season, bright, dark, canary, mustard you name it, it was there. Try it in small doses if such bright colors aren’t for you, or splash yourself in all the shades of yellow that you can find if you want to stop traffic and be current with the hottest color trend.

out

Out- Black and blue Dark blue and black are two colors that we need to shelf until fall. Yes “the dress” might’ve been black and blue, or maybe it was gold and white? Regardless, try mixing navy blue with white or soft pinks for a cooler spring look, and your black garments spice them up with bright oranges, hot pinks and radiant blues. We guarantee you’ll look pretty cool.

50 shades of red Red is a color that men tend to avoid because it is too bright and draws a lot of attention. Red is a color that women like to see in men, because it catches their attention. We are particularly fond of using red in other stuff rather than shirts. Red pants are definitely a statement piece that you need to have in your closet, maybe a red light summer coat, or even some

red loafers to pair up with jeans and a crisp white shirt.

Out- Is that a nest on your face? Beards are usually cool, but with the hottest days approaching no one wants to think of what can be cooking underneath that bushy beard. Keep the lumberjack style away from your face, at least till the chilly winds are back. Trim your beard and keep your face fresh this spring.

In- Tanned toes Women are always making a big fuzz about men in sandals or showing their feet, well, ladies sorry to break it to you but our feet get hot in the summer as well and we need to air them out. Spend money on a nice pair of sandals, strappy or slip-ons, it doesn’t matter as long as they compliment your spring/ summer outfits. Guys, if your feet have been hibernating all this time and are not ready to see the sun yet, throw in a couple of more dollars and take care of them (a pedicure never killed anyone).

t u o 106

Out- 2 dollar flip flops We’ve seen the commercials for those “navy” $2 dollar flip flops. Do you really want something that cost $2 dollars to be guarding your feet? Sure, they come in different bright colors and are easy to match with all your outfits but they are not cute, and at the end of the day they are designed to only last about three trips to the pool. Ditch them!

Inheritance Choices: What Will You Leave Behind?

History is full with examples of parents taking actions they believe will improve the lives of future generations. In 1780, then President of the United States John Adams wrote to his wife:[1] “I must study Politicks and War that my sons may have liberty to study Mathematicks and Philosophy. My sons ought to study Mathematicks and Philosophy, Geography, natural History, Naval Architecture, navigation, Commerce, and Agriculture, in order to give their Children a right to study Painting, Poetry, Musick, Architecture, Statuary, Tapestry, and Porcelaine.” The underpinning for an improved future

Minimizing inheritance disputes Determining an equitable division of assets is never easy, not even for single parents or couples in traditional families. One child may suffer a disability, have an addiction problem, run the family business, be less successful than siblings, or have made life decisions parents are uncomfortable supporting. If your family circumstances necessitate an uneven distribution of

Proud member of PDN Wealth Advisors

assets, there are a myriad of ways to try and minimize the conflicts that may accompany the decision. These include:[4][5] • Acting discretely. If you’ve decided an unequal division of assets is necessary and know your children will not be happy with your decision, consider establishing a discreet trust for each child. The advantages of discreet trusts are they can be funded unequally and each one can have completely different distribution triggers and incentives. In addition, each child will only be apprised of the provisions of his or her trust unless the information is shared. Make sure the assets that will fund each trust are properly titled. • Establishing a shared trust. If you distribute the majority, but not all, of your estate equally among heirs, the remainder (perhaps one-fifth or one-quarter of the assets) can fund a shared trust to be used when an heir has an emergency need. The trust should have an objective third-party trustee who will be responsible for distributing funds fairly. • Choosing your executor carefully. Some say it’s best to follow family hierarchy and make your oldest child executor. Others say it’s best to choose a family member who is organized, hardworking, honest, and a good communicator. Still others will suggest you appoint a committee of executors because of the checks and balances a group provides. No matter what you decide, make sure everyone understands your choice.

ANDREW HARRIS WEALTH ADVISOR Hughes Financial Group 5925 Silver Springs, Ste B El Paso, TX 79912

• Explaining your thinking. The difference between family harmony and an ongoing feud may be determined by how clearly you communicate with your family. The Wall Street Journal

suggests, “Whenever possible, try to be open about your inheritance plan while you are still

This information is not intended to be a substitute for specific individualized legal advice. We suggest you discuss your specific situation with a qualified legal advisor.

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to inheritance. Parents will make decisions based on their knowledge of family dynamics and individual needs. The AAII Journal[6] suggests taking “a multi-faceted approach that combines psychology, good lawyering, a lot of self-
