He also has future plans of opening a new restaurant in the heart of downtown, no future theme or name has been selected, but he is ready to go head to head with other downtown restaurants. “I want to bring new experiences to my community to help better our downtown development. Downtown is changing in great ways,” Chen describes enthusiastically. Growing up in indigent conditions is what Chen says has contributed to his success as a National Partner of the Chinese Services Group and as an entrepreneur, and if he could share one piece of advice to aspiring entrepreneurs trying to make a difference in El Paso it would be to, “never give up, always work hard and do what you do.” Growing up

Although Chen currently splits his residence between El Paso and Mexico City, he calls El Paso his true home. He hopes to see the economic relationship between El Paso and Juárez flourish again as it once did in the past. He feels El Paso is in a great position to become a major leading city for business. He sees himself fully invested into his community, always searching for new ventures that can help bring more progress to the border town that gave him the opportunity to become the successful business man he is today.

Mike Luna came to BMW-MINI of El Paso two years ago with a big voice and a big vision for the future. As General Manager, he used his voice to create radio commercials that welcome all walks of life to shop at ease at his luxury dealership. As a motivator, he used his vision for the future, to encourage and inspire his team to break records, raise standards, and achieve the highest honor given to a BMW dealership, Center of Excellence. Center of Excellence selects the top ten dealerships in the world based on 38 components ranging from customer service, sales efficiency, service, to customer loyalty. The award is a first ever for BMW of El Paso, and only two dealerships in the state of Texas have reached this level of achievement. Center of Excellence is a huge honor that Mike and his team at BMW of El Paso intend to share with their customers by hosting an appreciation event this summer, as a thank you for making their dealership a top ten award recipient. “Nothing is more valuable to us than our customers. We won this award because of the people who work here. I have a fine staff of perfectionists. We worked hard to instill this culture into everything we do, and our people know that our customers come first.” In addition to winning awards, BMW-MINI of El Paso is a proud sponsor of various community events and charities such as Ronald McDonald House and El Paso Humane Society amongst countless others. “I firmly believe that the city, the county, and the state of Texas in general, has been very good to BMW-MINI of El Paso and we owe it to our city to give back in return. El Paso is a beautiful city, with beautiful people. It is a best kept secret amongst Texas, and I plan on spreading the word.” Next on the horizon for BMW-MINI of El Paso is obtaining Center of Excellence status year after year, prepping for their upcoming dealership remodel, growing the service department, and per Mike Luna, “Expanding the word service in every capacity. I learned from my mentor, W.O. Bankston that if you treat your customers like royalty every time they walk in, they will reward you back, and that’s what’s happened here!” As they say, behind every successful man is a strong woman, and Mike’s wife, Georgiana is no exception. “I am so proud of my husband and the team at BMW of El Paso. Under his guidance, they have learned to operate like a finely tuned machine and it shows in all they do.” “I am blessed with great people. Pointe Homes Pointe Homes is currently building in over 15 communities on the East, West, Northeast, Upper Valley and Mission Valley. Also in the works is a sleek, contemporary 14-unit apartment complex near UTEP on Stanton Street which will be ready in spring of 2016. The vision for Pointe Homes and Villalobos is simple: Becoming the #1 builder in the markets we serve. Hunter Quartermane Quartermane Salon A career spanning nearly 26 years would be an admirable accomplishment by anyone’s standards, a career in the image industry fueled with passion only appears to be gaining momentum for Hunter Quartermane. Hunter is Chief Creative Director of Quartermane Salons TX, a concept birthed by he and his wife Shannon Quartermane. His El Paso based salon has been in existence 25 years and has had a reputation of offering firsts for El Paso in luxury haircare lines such as Rene Furterer, Oribe, and Kerastase. Quartermane Salon has come a long way since its inception and a dream of branding out has finally been realized with Quartermane Salon | Downtown Dallas, the concepts latest flagship. Quartermane’s view of why he’s had success begins with a story, “Since I was a very young child my mother taught me that I could do all things through Christ that gave me strength. I’m not lucky at all, my lack of education could’ve defined my life, as I only completed 7th grade. I could’ve allowed a moment like that to define me, instead I believe God chose to take hold and teach me how to define my very own moments. I have been given an abundance of undeserved blessings. With Gods help and incredible support from amazing people, I’ve been given a chance to live out my dream in my industry here in El Paso and now beyond. I believe I have a greater obligation to my client base than just making them look good, though I love that part of my artistry. It means nothing if I can’t plant a seed of positivity, or help impart some wisdom or love. I wish to leave a lasting legacy. One of hope and encouragement, one of empowerment through my life’s story, a true miracle and proof of Gods hand in my life. I should not have been able to have this life, however that’s why I believe my testimony to my clients is so powerful and real. If He will do what He’s done in my life, He will do it for anyone.” Quartermane Salon 5925 Silver Springs, Suite D El Paso, TX 79912 915-303-5070 quartermanesalon.com Photographed by: DAVID PARISH

With a quick twist of the neck one can see various prints, posters, and T-Shirts lining the neon green walls. “T-Shirts are synonymous with many things… There were shared tastes there.” Experimentation with the art form budded popularity amongst peers and the like, and soon the print shop had orders from local bands and community events. Soon they began to create “proper” design and coined the name Proper Printshop. “We were printing stuff that we wanted to wear ourselves. We were doing things proper, not just the correct way but the best way.” They Street where artists in conjunction with the design team gathered to nurture a culture around their scene. The two started hosting events and showcasing their work at art shows, local band shows, and community events like the Tour De Fun, a group bicycle ride and pub crawl that runs the gambit through all the downtown hotspots. Proper relocated to the corner of Virginia and Montana and soon switched hands in partnership. Along with a new face in the partnership, Allen Hudson, a new phase of the printshop began. Changes were made in the partnership to carry out creative endeavor. Escarzaga married and went on to bigger and better things, leaving the shop in limbo for a short time period. But J.J. continued on and with Hudson, formerly of Recovery Shirts, added to the Proper family the crew moved

June, 2015 “Our next print is our best print.” The crew approaches each new piece as a new time to innovate and not only advertise the client’s business but the work of the design house as well. “Where disciplines overlap is where you get innovation.” J.J. says the Proper crew is consistently practicing their craft. “Know your craft. You need to understand the rules, then you can start breaking them. El Paso is definitely in an upswing,” says J.J. boldly and proudly when prodded with the question on the way the local design scene has changed since his beginnings in shirt-making in 2008. With the advent of more community based activity around downtown El Paso, Proper has found opportunity not only for their business, but for their talent in curating events such as the Vegan Potluck they throw monthly, or vegan cooking classes. “With people you can create the

German Pub, located at 9530 Viscount in Barley Square, has been open since December 2014.

“A fantastic opportunity presented itself when the German Club on Ft. Bliss announced they were closing. We knew there would be a huge void in El Paso and surrounding areas to enjoy traditional German dishes, so we participated in an auction that allowed us to purchase key pieces of equipment. Once we secured the equipment the planning stages started. We met every Wednesday for almost nine months prior to opening. The location was secured and renovation took 25 days to complete and the Pub was born,” says co-owner Jessie De Santos. Marco Andresen, De Santos’ business partner, was the general manager of the German Club and also helped run the German Oktoberfest for a number of years. His experience, along with De Santos’ expertise garnered from operating a marketing and promotions company, facilitated a relatively smooth opening of the pub. Along with some of the equipment, certain staff members also transplanted to the pub. Chef Hilde Smith is responsible for cooking up genuine German dishes, which make up the bulk of the pub’s menu. “She has years of cooking experience and has created many of the authentic recipes we serve,” says De Santos. Among the many dishes offered is traditional German cuisine, comprised of such staples as bratwurst, schnitzel, and goulash. Also sprinkled into the mix are more domestic offerings, including chicken wings, mozzarella sticks, and chicken nuggets. The menu is

Qualities Women are Looking for in a Man | By: JANNET BUSTILLOS |

Listen up fellas! There’s no doubt that women are complicated creatures, and some of us can be extremely picky when it comes to the guys we date. Which is why I decided to give you all some pointers, on what “most” women are looking for in a man. Read on gentlemen, you might just learn a thing or two.

1 ChivalrY

Many women seem to think that chivalry is

his month we celebrate our men and with that sentiment

in mind, for us June is all about the tastes and tricks that make our men tick. And this month, The City has turned its attention to the drink we

all know and love: bourbon. And in the spirit of finding true American bourbon, there’s just no better spot to look than the motherland itself. So if you and your bros are looking for a great way to get away from the ladies – why not get out and explore Kentucky’s Bourbon Trail®? If

you love the drink, spending the long weekend away-from-it-all will surely wet your whistle in all the right ways by not only offering you some of the best bourbon you’ve ever tasted, but also by giving you a little perspective and history of Kentucky and the culture that surrounds this www.thecitymagazineelp.com fantastic piece of American refinement.

But first a little history . . . So where exactly does bourbon finds it’s roots? The history of bourbon has not been well documented . . . and is rooted in a controversy with conflicting claims as to the exact account of how the drink found it’s home in Kentucky and who exactly was the first to concoct the bourbon drink, but most agree either with one of two stories: The first account says that a Baptist minister, Reverend Elijah Craig, was a distiller and said to be the first man to use charred oak casks to distill the alcohol, giving the liquor the distinct reddish tone and special taste.

The other says that Jacob Spears from Bourbon County was the first to truly label the product he created as “Bourbon Whiskey.” This is probably the more popular of the two accounts and Spears’ home, Stone Castle, still exists today. In all reality, the process of distilling was most likely brought to Kentucky in the 18th century by the immigrating Scots, Irish, German, and Welsh who were coming to farm the area. Bourdon itself is made of a mixture called “mash bill” and is made from 51% corn, with the remainder consisting of wheat, rye or malted barley. This mash bill mix is taken, ground and mixed with water, then yeast is added and finally the mash is 101

The ability to remold and restructure your coiffure without the restricting freeze normally found in other clay pomades makes this product ideal for texturized hairstyles. as it just me? Or, did the other 17 million people watching the riveting Bruce Jenner interview in which he came out

as a transgender woman on 20/20 with Diane Sawyer find Bruce Jenner to be the kindest, bravest and gentlest soul in the universe? Unfortunately most people didn’t hear of Jenner until watching the public spectacle that is “The Kardashians,” America’s own famous-for-being-famous family. But I have been a Jenner fan since I was a teenager. I was glued to the TV as I watched him win the decathlon in the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics, and thus becoming the best athlete in the world. I was the first on my block to bolt out and buy the Wheaties box with his photo on the front, and I didn’t even eat Wheaties. I had a poster of Jenner hanging in my room, and he inspired me everyday to be my best. To me he will always be the archetypical Olympic hero who rocked the world with his athletic abilities. When I discovered that my son Sam was dyslexic, I hung a photo of Jenner in his room, because he too is dyslexic. I read one of Jenner’s books in which he said that he hated school. But in the 5th grade he discovered he could run. And run Bruce did for years and years away from himself … until he stopped running and sat in front of Diane Sawyer. The irony of Jenner’s story is that the Kardashians were trying to run with the big dogs and doing a whole lot of nothing but shopping – trying so desperately to to be the story. But Bruce stated, “I had the story … the one real, true story in the family was the one I was hiding and nobody knew about.” That’s when the interview hit a real nerve with me. Even if you can’t relate to his specific situation, everyone knows what it’s like to have a family dynamic drastically change and

Sparkling chandeliers trickled down from the ceiling and beautiful flowers adorned the pink embroidered tables. As guests came in, they signed picture frames with portraits of Martha sending their best wishes. A candy table helped keep everyone’s sweet tooth in check before the cutting of the cake. A photo booth was also available for guests to take fun pictures and copies given to the quinceañera with personalized messages to help Martha remember her day. As the mariachis came in to sing Las Mañanitas, Martha took center stage. As she swayed back and forth her beautiful, white ball gown flowed with gracefulness across the floor. Her up-do was topped with a princess tiara allowing her to show off her new diamond earrings, given to her as a present courtesy of Susan Eisen Fine Jewelry & Watches via Jewelers for Children. “She is a symbol of strength and has a whole long life ahead of her and anything we can do to be a part of her wish experience, we are happy to do,” said owner Susan Eisen. Strength was evident in this 15-year-old who has battled a brain tumor nearly all her life. To overcome it took a strength like no other. But on this day, one could hardly tell that she had been through so much. “Even after all the suffering she’s gone through she’s still a very beautiful happy girl. To see her like this in this moment, and see her full of joy. What else could a mother ask for?” said Martha’s mother. Martha was referred to Make-A-Wish via Providence Children’s Hospital Child Life Specialist Ana Aburto.“Sierra Providence cherishes the honor to be able to partner with Make-A-Wish and grant our exceptional, inspiring children with life-threatening illnesses the opportunity and courage to realize their potential,” said Rob Anderson, Chief Business Development Officer for Sierra Providence Health Network. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

After her referral, Martha then met with her Wish Granters Ana and Leonel Ortega – volunteers who serve as the liaisons between Make-A-Wish and the families served – who explained that she could choose her heart-felt wish based on her hopes and dreams. Martha ultimately decided on a quinceañera because “she wanted to celebrate her life and journey with friends and family.” The wish was supported through donations made by community partners. Months of planning combined to make Martha’s dream come true.

Appreciating Dad

| By: JOANN WARDY |

Having been in the gift business, I couldn’t help observe the noticeable difference in sales between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Somehow father always got the short end of the stick. It never seemed quite fair. While men seem to be more difficult to shop for than women (since we love everything), we must not forget the importance of acknowledging our father on his special day. Here are some suggestions: • A well-thought out letter expressing our love and appreciation • Taking him out to dinner • Buying him a special book we know he will find of interest • Equipment for his favorite sport • Tools if he is into them • Tickets to his favorite entertainment • Don’t forget the big hug and kiss and the words “I love you, Dad” • Spend a special afternoon with just your dad Joann Wardy owns and directs “The School of Etiquette and Enrichment” and was certified at “The Protocol School of Washington.” For children and adult class schedules call (915) 584-3930.

Don’t Let Your Retirement Savings Goal Get You Down As a retirement savings plan participant, you know that setting an accumulation goal is an important part of your overall strategy. In fact, each year in its annual Retirement Confidence Survey, the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) reiterates that goal setting is a key factor influencing overall retirement confidence. But for many, a retirement savings goal that could reach as high as $1 million or more may seem like a daunting, even impossible mountain to climb. What if you’re contributing as much as you can to your retirement savings plan, and investing as aggressively as possible within your risk comfort zone, but still feel that you’ll never reach the summit? As with many of life’s toughest challenges, it may help to focus a little less on the end result and more on the details that help refine your plan.* Retirement goals are based on assumptions

which could impact both the lifestyle you desire in retirement and the

friends, reading a good book, taking a scenic drive, or playing board games with grandchildren. (Source: “Happiness from Ordinary and Extraordinary Experiences,” Journal of Consumer Research, June 2014) While your dream may include days filled with extravagant leisure activities, your retirement reality may turn out much different—and that actually may be a matter of choice.

Plan ahead and think creatively Chances are, there have been times in your life when you’ve had to put on your thinking cap and find ways to cut costs and adjust your budget. Those skills may come in handy during retirement. But you don’t have to wait to begin thinking about ideas. Consider ways you might trim your expenses or enhance your retirement income now, before the need arises. Jot down any ideas that come to mind and file them away with your retirement financial information. Then when the time comes, you can refer to your list to help refine your retirement budgeting strategy.

The bottom line As EBRI finds in its research every year, setting a goal is indeed a very important first step in putting together your strategy for retirement. However, you shouldn’t let that number scare you. As long as you have an estimate in mind, understand all the various assumptions that go into it, break down that goal into a monthly income need, review your goal once a year and as major life events occur, increase your retirement savings whenever possible, and remember to think creatively both now and in retirement--you can take heart knowing that you’re doing your best to prepare for whatever the future may bring. *All investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal, and there can be no assurance that any investment strategy will be successful.
