“Where words leave off, music begins.” Heinrich Heine
Editor’s
Letter
This issue celebrates the excitement following our city’s growing artistry and music scene. I have always been a lover of music – from Norah Jones to George Strait to ZZ Top. Even though I myself am an amazing singer, our editor Kim (my longtime karaoke partner) and I were surprised that the crowd didn’t go wild for one of our performances. On a more serious note, it’s always important to support local talent and this November, we at The City Magazine pay homage to all of our local artists. Living in this area has given me a fine-tuned appreciation and a high level of respect for the local hometown boys and girls trying to make their big break. Most recently El Paso was able to see this in our own Jonny Gray. As a contestant on the “The Voice” he competed his heart out, finishing 12th in season five. After performing hits like “All These Things That I’ve Done” by The Killers, Blake Shelton, Ceelo, and the rest of the judges called him, “energetic,” “lyrical” and “poetic” and we at The City couldn’t agree more. The evening they told him he would not be allowed to continue in the competition, there was a moan heard all across El Paso – but our city has more to look forward to! As he continues to work toward completing his first album, with much excitement, we announce that Jonny will be returning home to us. We invite all of you to attend The City Magazine’s annual Best of the City Awards Party on January 31st at Cutter Aviation, benefitting the Boys and Girls Clubs of El Paso, where Jonny will give his first stage appearance in El Paso since “The Voice.” In the spirit of local talent, we were also able to catch up with our hometown Dirty River Boys who just released their self-titled album. Having personally listened to the entire album, I can fully attest to the huge talent these young men possess. We at the magazine have watched them grow and their musical journey has been an inspiration to us all. As they continue on tour, we wish them all the best and wait with great anticipation to see what they will do next. Please enjoy all of the local talent this magazine brings to you and take the time to be truly inspired.

Very shortly after graduating, Jonny enlisted in the Air Force on a four-year enlistment contract, and began his period of service to our country. While in the Air Force, Jonny was trained as and served as a member of the law enforcement focused division of the service. In the simplest of terms, each branch of the military maintains its own equivalent of a police force, ensuring proper conduct between and among its service members, as well as helping to establish and keep good order and discipline, elements critical to the success of any branch of the military. As a member of the Security Forces, one of the primary areas of responsibility is keeping the bases and operating locations secure. It was this role that kept Jonny busy for most of his time during two deployments to Iraq, during the height of our involvement in both Iraq and Afghanistan, as part of the Global War on Terror. During that time period, Jonny’s existence was one that was probably reflective of a great many young men and women in this country who were called to serve for any number of reasons: emotions and sentiment full of purpose, scattered between

bouncing between periods of constant and often chaotic movement and almost complete idleness. It was during these periods of calm that Jonny furthered his love of music, and discovered a new and powerful instrument: his voice.

audition led to more auditions, until finally, after several months, he found himself auditioning for the main production team at NBC, the open audition for the show. And as all of us now know, he nailed it. While on the show, Jonny continued surviving round after round, and found himself on Team CeeLo, competing with the other members of the show and perhaps most importantly building a national audience and learning about the music industry. “Getting to see and learn about the inner workings of the industry was truly invaluable.” Jonny performed week after week, walking through Photo by: Brett Watts

or Del Valle senior Stephen Dominguez, his time as part of the school’s marching band drumline was what kept him going during some of the most difficult times of his life. “It’s his passion,” said his mother Bonnie Sanchez. “He loves music and loves being in the band.” So when it came time for the 17-year-old to choose his Make-A-Wish request, the decision was easy – replacement of new percussion instruments and accessories for the school’s entire drumline. Dominguez is fighting two aggressive tumors – pleural plaques in his right lung and fibromatosis near his ribs. “These people are my family,” said Dominguez, who hopes to one day attend Texas Tech University. “There’s nothing that I wouldn’t do for them. They are like my brothers and sisters.” 46

November, 2014 The wish was executed secretly behind the scenes. On September 19, during the halftime show of Del Valle’s home football game against rival Parkland, the wish was revealed. The new drumline was rolled onto the field amid announcements. Family and friends of Dominguez were invited onto the field to celebrate the reveal. When Stephen came forward, the tears rolling down his face betrayed his emotions. “I just couldn’t believe it,” he said. “I had no idea what was going on. But this is awesome.” The mission of Make-A-Wish® North Texas is to grant the wishes of children with lifethreatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. “It’s

Our wishes positively impact not just the recipient and his family, but the entire community. The granting of a wish truly has the power to change lives.” “This wish is huge – it benefits the band, the school and the entire community,” said Mark Lopez, the store manager at Guitar Center. “We’re excited to be a part of this. It’s amazing how he’s thinking of everybody else.” For those who know Dominguez, however, his generosity is not a surprise. “It’s remarkable, it says a lot about his character and who he is,” said Armando Martinez, Del Valle’s band director. “Stephen is a great guy so it wasn’t surprising that he would do something like this. A fourth album is currently in development and about to be recorded. “We do a lot of prep work with our albums,” he explains. “All the songs are there, it’s just getting them on tape”. When I asked Morry what makes the harmonica so appealing to him, he answered quickly – “It’s always with me.” He is talking about the size of the instrument of course. He can bring it with him anywhere, and play at any time. While talking to him I could not help but imagine him reaching into a pocket and playing a song trapped in his mind. It is obvious to me that Morry Sochat carries the rhythm at all times as well. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Spread Joy, Be Thankful to Make Holidays Happy | By: JOANN WARDY | As the holidays approach, here are some tips: • Make sure to call parents, close relatives and friends and wish them happy holidays. • If they are alone, and have just lost a spouse or close family member, be sure to include them in your family gathering or make sure they will not be alone. • Thanksgiving is not the only time that we should be thankful, but it is certainly a time that we want to make a point to thank our spouses for whatever they do in contributing to the family unit, whether it be through work outside the home or domestic chores. It is a time for children to show appreciation to their parents, a time for expressing love, respect and gratitude to all. Here’s wishing all my readers a very blessed Thanksgiving.

as it turns out, there is a scientific reason for this: digital sound waves reach your ears in “packets” whereas the sound waves from a record reach your ear in the form of a constant, uninterrupted stream. Now it seems so funny, offhand and adventitious to me that sitting on the steps of the long-gone Dolce Vita on Cincinnati street, smoking endlessly, bragging about a hobby of mine would lead to a career that would last over 10 years. A curious bar owner overheard a friend and I talking about our vinyl record collection and said, “Come DJ at my bar. I’ll pay you.” That’s how “Mod Swank,” my first DJ night began. November, 2014 Currently DJ Neil Mac is working with producer Brad Grobler on a handful of soon-to-be-released original tracks. “I was extremely surprised and impressed at the quality of his work, also at the professionalism of Neil at such a young age,” Grobler told the El Paso Times. “In all I top-lined and mix/mastered two of Neil’s huge EDM tracks.” Through these songs and the rest that DJ Neil Mac performs, he always hopes that he can take his listeners on musical journeys that span his appreciation for all types of music. “There’s so much more that I want to do,” Neil explained. “I love performing and producing dance music, right now we’re building up and now we’re waiting to find the right time – it’s a big waiting game so hopefully it all pays off.” Outside of continuing to pursue his musical dreams, Neil McLellan still describes himself as an average 11-year-old. “I’m a normal kid, I play video games, and I enjoy school work; but it still is a little crazy to get up and hop on an airplane to go and perform for thousands of people.” But at the end of the day, as long as DJ Neil Mac gets to continue performing and sharing his music he is happy. “I love just seeing people’s smiles; having them jump up and down, enjoying the music. I really love what I do.”

came the drums, then bass, then a fancy ‘70s Gibson Les Paul. The lights brightened and the curtains opened up to reveal four, native El Paso twenty-somethings in a drunken mist playing to a Sunset Strip crowd. At the edge of the desert stands the sun, an advanced heating system like no other; a totem to the ancient mystics; and a dense, viscous furnace of a star that offers our city monumental energy. Use of that energy either results in great buildings and exhibits, or in tragic decay and social negligence. from the city of El Paso came to
national prominence and much of the
fermentation took place at Rod Crosby’s Rosewood Studio. The journey has been as interesting as the music carved in his establishment. One of Crosby’s influences was a fellow El Pasoan. “At 15, I came to El Paso the summer of ’59 to visit my mother and return to Corona, California for high school. Long story short, I never went back. While here, I accidentally saw 17-year-old Bobby Fuller playing with his brother Randy in the Fanatics, at the Skylanes Bowling Alley’s “Little Dipper Lounge” out on Dyer Street, a block from where I lived at that time,” recalled Crosby, “Right before Bobby was leaving for Hollywood, the guitar player and

all them butter because they’re on a roll! Tony “Bubba” Canaba and Christine Jasso have been on such a roll, in fact, that their passion for bowling led
them to the top at this year’s national Special Olympic games in New Jersey. 29-year-old Canaba and 44-year-old Jasso, both of whom have intellectual disabilities, agreed their goals were to just go out there to improve their game, have fun and make new friends. Not only did they meet those goals but also managed to come back with more than great memories. Both El Pasoans earned first place in teams. Jasso also earned medals for singles and doubles with her partner, Virgileen Shinn, while Canaba also placed first in singles and fourth in doubles with his partner, Kellie Moneypenny. Shinn and Moneypenny do not have intellectual disabilities and attended as Unified Partners. Canaba, Jasso and their partners were the only individuals from El Paso to compete in the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games. Canaba’s mother said a local team has not attended since 1991 and to have her son representing our city has made her very proud. In an effort to represent her son and show extra support, one of Canaba’s family members made shirts for his biggest fans, sporting the catchy phrase: “Bubba That’s how I roll!” The 2014 USA Games are currently the largest and most diverse national games. Nearly 3,500 athletes, with the support of 1,000 coaches from the United States were given the opportunity to compete in 16 Olympic-style team and individual sports at the USA Games this past June. Among those representing Team Texas, there were 121 athletes and 33 coaches competing in a total of 11 sports. Canaba’s mother – who was among a total of 70,000 family and friends out in support of all the athletes and coaches – says the hospitality was fantastic and wouldn’t have been possible without all the volunteers. Ten thousand volunteers helped in the weeklong games, which were held in the Princeton area. The College of New Jersey, Rider University, Princeton University and Mercer County Park were just some of the locations where the competitions were held. Both athletes agree New Jersey outdid itself, from the moment they arrived until the very end. Canaba says they received red-carpet 100

POUND s most of our readers are well aware, we at The City Magazine seek out and treasure
those in our area who extend themselves beyond the ordinary call of duty to make this city great and to selflessly raise up those around them. Enter Louis Aguilar of Pound 4 Pound Boxing Gym and more recently, Pound 4 Pound Promotions. This is one such example of a man who by no means was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, but instead pushed through the difficult and often discouraging circumstances he faced as a child to become a successful leader and mentor in the El Paso community. A native of El Paso, Aguilar was relocated as a child from his home town to a neighborhood in Cypress, California, where he and his siblings were raised by a single mother. He recalls his childhood years there as being filled with struggle and where simply-put, the turf was “rough. So, at the fairly young age of 14, Aguilar took up the sport of boxing as not only a hobby, but as a means of staying clear of trouble in a neighborhood ridden with exactly that. This hobby quickly grew into a passion and he boxed for the entire next decade of his young life. Upon his return to

Aguilar’s proven dedication to children and teens has created change and opportunity for many in our community. His commitment lies in offering El Paso a boxing forum for both the love of the sport and fitness. Aguilar is now co-owner of the Pound 4 Pound Boxing Gym, along with partner in our city, Gino Giona, and serves the gym as head trainer offering men, women and children fitness classes or actual training to compete. He’s also president of Pound 4 Pound Promotions, which on September 27, hosted the “Best Of The Best” boxing event that not only showcased Aguilar’s top talent, but also highlighted his commitment to kids when the Boys & Girls Clubs were invited to attend for complimentary ringside seats, autographed T-shirts from the boxers, and an accompaniment to the main fighter in a spectacular “tunnel-run” show of support. The City Magazine was there, too, and the images you’ll see in ‘The Scene’ speak volumes to the work that Louis Aguilar does in our exciting city. Aguilar says his ultimate goal is to put out El Paso’s very own boxing champion and that he does everything for his family, and very importantly, credits his success to their overwhelming support and encouragement over the years. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

while not everyone would be as excited to “take care” of the animals themselves, the prospect of eating fresh and having their food come from a humane source with less suffering is exciting for many. Eating this way isn’t always easy to manage, although there are those who are fighting the good fight. We have various farmer’s markets available to us in town: Cafe Mayapan, Downtown Farmer’s Market and Ardovino’s Desert Crossing Farmer’s Market – all places where we can find a range of organic and farm-grown vegetables and some proteins. Entertainment based on games of chance is nothing new to this world. The gaming industry dates back to many ancient societies in different forms and has evolved over the centuries. Today, casinos can be tourist attractions in themselves and are found all over the world. Down in the Southwest there exist long-established “meccas” of casino gambling. Hop in and get ready for a road trip across state lines that will leave you with fun stories to tell the folks back home.
R
azz, Texas Hold’em, Omaha, Seven Card Stud, Blackjack, Roulette and Craps are just a few of the many games you’ll come across in a casino in the borderland. It may take some web savvy, online gaming practice, a little research in probability, and a couple of theatrical lessons to master the tables; or not, it’s all just a game of chance. Just miles from the U.S.–Mexico border awaits an evening of finery, fedoras, quality brew, live thoroughbred
and quarter horse racing, plus hundreds of fun slots at the Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino in Sunland Park, New Mexico. This experience may leave your mind spinning with numbers but why not double your chances at winning more money by venturing north to see what other fancy casinos are out there.
The map here says that there is only one Indian casino in Texas, the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino in Eagle Pass. Texas is home to three federally-recognized tribes but the Kickapoo are the sole tribe authorized to run a casino. This instantly attracts tourists and makes this spot a jackpot! The million-dollar setting makes for a comfortable gambling session. You will have a perfect view of the Rio Grande lining the beautiful greenery of South Texas, mezquite restaurants, Texasstyle gift shops, sundries and snacks, entertainment throughout the casino, what more could you ask for? Well, Texas has been wonderful but I’m curious to see what lies beyond the state line in New Mexico.

This could be the greatest part of our journey. Surrounded by dark deserts, we will continue to find our way through winding mountain highways and outland trails until we reach El Dorado – the Inn of the Mountain Gods: a 38,000-square-foot Shangri-La with 800 gaming machines, 29 table and poker games, and four world-renowned restaurants with mouthwatering menus. If your pockets aren’t full yet I’m sure your stomachs are. I know, you are having the time of your life, but if we don’t hit the road we won’t catch the Tracy Lawrence concert at the Isleta Resort & Casino in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We’ll have plenty of time to hit the slots after the show and try to win back the money we spent on the concert.
