“ You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.’ You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” Eleanor Roosevelt, former First Lady

Editor’s Letter It is fitting that in October we celebrate all those who have helped bring breast cancer awareness to the forefront. Breast cancer is a condition that has the power to spark great fear, grief, and sadness. It is a disease that has managed to touch each and every one of us in some way. Strong women who triumph over adversity have always inspired me. This month I’m especially honored and proud to know each of the three women on our cover. Each of these women was initiated into the sisterhood of breast cancer and each followed her own unique journey to recovery – despite each of them dealing with the horror of being diagnosed twice. These stories are illuminating, emotional, and moving. But, what I find really bonds these three special women together is their perseverance and determination. In the midst of the storm, these ladies didn’t whine or complain – they put on their boxing gloves and did all they could to survive. Today they offer their stories of triumph for the purpose of educating. They look beautiful because they are and they are strong because they chose to fight. When given the “C” diagnosis these three women had three things in common: they never gave up – all three have the mentality that they never let anyone or anything get in their way; they continue to use the power of positive thinking to tackle obstacles and challenges; and the word defeat isn’t in their vocabulary. This month we remind all of our mothers, sisters, girlfriends, wives and family members to take the initiative to get their breast exams. This issue is dedicated to those who have personally undertaken a fight with cancer or know someone who has; you and the courage you have to continue fighting the good fight to take down breast cancer once and for all.

Fancy Meeting You Here! | By: AUDREY TOLLIVER |

Daniel Veale/Director of Marketing for UTEP Athletics 1. Being the director of marketing for UTEP Athletics you have to coordinate different events almost like a producer or director but instead of planning for hundreds you have to plan for thousands. What’s the largest event you’ve had to coordinate? On a typical gameday, I coordinate everything from student tailgating, stadium music, crowd prompts, video board, promotions, band, cheerleaders, Golddiggers and timelines for our TV hosts. I’ve run sellout games for football, men’s and women’s basketball that have all been amazing experiences to be a part of. Getting 12,000 fans at basketball or 52,000 fans at football on their feet and having a good time is the best feeling in the world! 2. Over the past couple of years you have brought in special acts for football and basketball games. Who has been your favorite act to bring to El Paso? We’ve been fortunate to bring in big acts from America’s Got Talent like Quick Change, Acrodunk, Cristin Sandu, and The Olate Dogs. Last year, we were lucky enough to have the Guinness World Record TV show come in and showcase our university while one of our former cheerleaders broke the world record for most consecutive back handsprings. 3. You sent UTEP gear to the band One Direction and TV celebrity Honey Boo Boo. How did that turn out? Haha! No one lets me live down the time I sent Honey Boo Boo a UTEP Christmas package. During the holidays we sent her an entire, customized Kid’s Club membership and the family took pictures with all of our gear and posted it to their fan pages. Our special events department contacted us for UTEP gear to put on One Direction for their promo piece as well as to wear during their performance.

Josey Mitchell/Singer and Actress 1. You’ve played the lead role in many of the UTEP Dinner Theater productions over the past decade. Is there any role in particular that you have just adored playing and why? It is so hard to answer this question. My favorite would have to be Belle (from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast). She is a headstrong, brainy, one-of-a-kind woman and I love Disney! Kira in Xanadu was a blast because I had to roller skate most of the show, sing Olivia Newton John songs and put on a phony Australian accent. 2. You’re the dance teacher at Coronado High School. Since you’re a dancer, have you choreographed any dances for UTEP Dinner Theater productions? I have had the opportunity to contribute to solos and duets I have performed. I would love the opportunity to choreograph for a UDT show. I did some choreography for the EPISD summer musical Damn Yankees this year and had a blast! 3. Have performed outside of El Paso? I performed with a company called Broadway by the Bay in San Francisco, California. I also had the opportunity to perform as a student of the Paul Taylor School in New York City and did a few singing gigs in Austin with a group called the Vendetta Big Band. 16

“Because if you keep hope alive, it will keep you alive.” October is the month we honor those individuals who have suffered from breast cancer. Here in the state of Texas breast cancer claims an average of 2,500 lives a year. In our own city there are hundreds of women affected by this tragic disease. El Paso’s own Linda Medrano, Kim Stull, and Ladonna Apodaca have faced breast cancer head on. These are their stories of diagnosis, the hardships of treatment, and the incredible victory and hope each of them were able to find through unwavering faith and perseverance. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

But as time wore on and the pain got worse, Linda decided to seek a second opinion. “By the time they did the sonogram, the cancer was everywhere. I never thought cancer was a possibility for me.” Linda’s results detailed that she had a severe case of ovarian cancer. I chose the latter and I have not regretted it once. In three years I had three major surgeries, but I’m still here four years later.” According to statistics, at the beginning of her treatment Linda had a slim 15% chance of survival. When the results came back, the doctors found a shadow on her right breast. “After they processed the results from the biopsy, the doctor called and asked me to come into his office. When my husband and I went in, the doctor told us that it was breast cancer. He began telling us our options; but it was just so much information at the time. My

Dr. Rivera counseled me and together we decided that my chances of survival would not improve with the mastectomy. There are times when I think, ‘Should I have done that?’ and I am continually glad I didn’t. The key here is that

I knew I was going to lose my hair and for some reason the idea of that was very upsetting. At the time, I had been in real estate for a year and I didn’t want to tell anyone. Even as I started treatment and began my recovery I kept working and didn’t stop. I was very selective about who I told. I did wear a wig, but it wasn’t until the end of my treatment that people started guessing.” Despite the struggles of battling cancer a second time, Kim persevered and never gave up. “I’ve been so lucky. Through all of this my husband has been supportive and we have a really happy marriage. We really enjoy being with each other and we try to spend as much time together as we can. This experience has taught my husband and I that our family and our grandchildren are what’s most important.” To others whose lives have been touched by cancer Kim recommends, “Stay busy, and live your life. Rather than pulling a bunny out of the magician’s hat, however, Martha pulled out a “Mis Quince Años” sash -- learning onstage that her wish to have a quinceañera was to be granted. La Popular Quince Evening and Prom Boutique announced that they would be donating Martha’s quinceañera dress for her event, which will be scheduled for April 2015. Additionally, the Bohannon Development Group, which served as the evening’s Wish Reveal Sponsors, presented Martha with a basket that included a tiara, a doll and a memory book. The tiara was then placed on Martha’s head. “I had no idea that was going to happen,” said Martha afterwards, wiping away tears. “I am so excited. This is like a dream come true.” Other sponsors included Stewart Title, Western Refining, Helen of Troy, River Oaks Properties, Casa Ford Lincoln Nissan, Sierra Providence Health Network, Sunland Park Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, Tropicana Homes and Arm Farms, Ltd. KVIA ABC-7 served as Media Sponsor and The City Magazine served as Advertising Sponsor. “Stewart Title of El Paso is committed to serving the families of our community through

October, 2014 and skill to their organization. Daniel holds a Pharm D (Doctor of Pharmacy) from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, and has significant experience in both hospital and retail pharmacy settings. Abigail Drum and Randall Lopez, the two certified pharmacy technicians on site, both have several years’ worth of experience in both retail and compounding settings. And Jaime Lowenberg, the controller, brings a wealth of financial accounting experience and a long history of civic involvement as well. Mr. Lowenberg’s role is perhaps the hidden essential, as the financial component of pharmacy, as with virtually all other areas of medical care, is becoming increasingly complex. In short, with the advent of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), or more commonly referred to as Obamacare, the way that compounded medications are covered can vary widely. According to Sun City, there is a tremendous amount of deviation between the many plan models under PPACA, and the only way to know exactly what your particular plan provides is to consult the plan’s drug formulary benefit directly. And based upon my research in this area, it seems that formulary benefits will become even more complex, meaning that patients and consumers will have to keep themselves very well informed about the specifics of their coverage. But regardless of the inner-workings of your policy, one thing is certain: Sun City Compounding is a wonderful new and viable alternative to traditional retail pharmacies, and can provide a host of unique benefits to the patients. They have a dedicated and professional team, and have expanded the community’s capacity in a critical market, which is always a positive thing for the community. Though we all hope it is not anytime soon, the next time life presents you with a challenge that does not seem to fall inside the nine dots with respect to a medication, there is a new partner in our community for you to meet the challenge with. 42

October, 2014

Dubbed El Paso’s “Queen of Bling”, Susan Eisen has built an impressive resume over her 34-year career as a hands-on artisan and owner of Susan Eisen Fine Jewelry. The accomplishments include 11 trademarks, a patent, and two books — Crazy About Jewelry: The Expert Guide to Buying, Selling, and Caring for your Jewelry and The Million Dollar Dishrag — that showcase her impressive creative and business paths.

ecently, Eisen added yet another accomplishment to her admirable profile — jewelry designer for the 66th

Primetime Emmy Awards. Four of her stunning

pieces made their way down the red carpet on

some of Hollywood’s big names to include Lauren Parsekian

(wife of Emmy-winner Aaron Paul), NBC Emmy Pre-show hostess, Shaun Robinson, and “Young and the Restless” actress Kate Linder. Parsekian sported 2.25 carats of handcrafted diamond earrings from Eisen’s Diamond

Vines Collection with a price tag of $17,800. “The earrings that Lauren Parsekian wore were designed specifically for her. After she saw our original designs she wanted something that climbed up her ear,” explained Eisen. Linder shined in not one but two of Eisen’s pieces, which included 3.85 carats of diamond and cultured pearl earrings at a retail price of $38,000. This was paired with a handmade, abstract gold and diamond ring from the Franklin Rock Collection priced at $15,800. “The ring that Kate Linder wore is from the Franklin Rock Collection. It’s very interesting because we went to the Franklin Mountains and pulled some rocks down, then we made molds of the textures on the rocks and we cast those in gold,” said Eisen.

October, 2014 List — a special list designed to help organize family heirlooms and divide personal property during the inheritance process. Eisen explains, “With Love List is a list that I’ve created to help people divide their heirlooms before they die so there are no family battles afterward.” Susan Eisen remains the center of the business. She continues to offer her clients her unique style of design and manufacture, her serious dedication to high craftsmanship in her work, and her desire to make each customer a happy one with jewelry they will cherish forever. “Doing jewelry repairs and working with people on everything from how their jewelry is made, how to improve it, how to add to it, and how to make it last longer — all that information and experience has helped me with the designs and the things that I am doing right now. I will always continue to do jewelry repairs, jewelry re-styling, and custom designs in El Paso. Jewelry doesn’t have to be expensive. Not everything is made for the stars. It’s the grassroots things that we enjoy doing for the people in El Paso that helps us reach the crowd that we’re reaching now, which are celebrities,” said Eisen. So what does the future look like postEmmy’s for the “Queen of Bling?” It means no sign of slowing down as Eisen is already in talks to have jewelry designs featured in future award shows. Susan Eisen explains, “I am working on a couture collection where I can expand on the designs that I make that are

one-of-a-kind. They are very fashion-forward and appealing to the celebrity personality. I’m also continuing to work on custom designs for my clients here in El Paso.” After all, it is the city of El Paso that Eisen thanks for her success: “It was El Paso that got me here. Being from El Paso, having wonderful customers, having people appreciate what we do and having them support us — that’s who we owe thanks to. I thank the city of El Paso, UTEP, and my parents for this opportunity, without any of them I wouldn’t have been able to do it.”

The Importance of a

GOOD BROW | By: MATTHEW ABRAHAM |

beaut y

There’s a Georgian proverb that states: “Give a blind man eyes and he will ask for eyebrows.” For as long as people have been grooming themselves, they have realized the importance of properly maintained eyebrows. Now more than ever, women (and quite a few men) have their eyebrows plucked, waxed, or tweezed on a regular basis. As a professional makeup artist, I am asked about eyebrows more often than almost any other feature on the face, and I am quick to relate the importance of eyebrows to one’s overall look. As eyebrows provide the framework to the architecture and emotion of the face, I advise women that if they only have time to do one thing before leaving the house, it would be to groom their brows. To Pluck or Not to Pluck More and more I encounter women whose eyebrows are over-tweezed, over-waxed, threaded away, or sometimes completely non-existent. This proves to be a challenge since this leaves no other option than filling in or creating the brow using a pencil, powder, or gel, resulting in “drawn-on” brows that can be harsh and sometimes unnatural looking. In 2014, the overplucked, thin eyebrows that were popular in the 90s, have taken a backseat to the fuller, more natural looking brow that Brooke Shields made popular in the 80s. Not only are fuller brows more natural, but they can provide more symmetry and structure to your face. Fuller brows also help to create a more youthful appearance. If your eyebrows are still stuck in 1995, and are too thin, my advice would be to put down your tweezers and skip your next waxing appointment. It may take several weeks (even months) to get your eyebrows back to being fuller or more natural, but it will be worth it. As you get older, eyebrows, just like the hair on your head or your eyelashes, naturally become more sparse and less dense so if you’re over 40 it may be more difficult to grow back over-tweezed or plucked-away brows.

Shaping, Filling and Arching Once you have achieved a good natural base and structure for your brows, you want to use a product that can help fill in and correct what your brows may be naturally lacking. Eyebrow cosmetic products have come a long way in recent years and the market is flooded with a variety of options to help you achieve that “perfect eyebrow.” www.thecitymagazineelp.com

93

October, 2014 Eyebrow pencils are generally formulated to be a bit waxier in consistency than other color cosmetic pencils to help coat the hair of the eyebrow and not easily rub-off. If you’re a brunette, you want to get a pencil that is a shade slightly lighter than your hair color. Never, and I repeat never, use a black eyebrow pencil unless you want to look like you’ve drawn on your brows with a sharpie. Blondes generally look good using a taupe or beige colored pencil depending on their shade and skin tone. Redheads may want to use something with a bit of warmth but nothing that is too red, as this can make the brows appear very fake. If you’re a bit heavy handed when applying makeup or simply want a product that is a bit more forgiving in the brow department, try using an eye shadow or eyebrow powder with a small, slanted brush. Again, if you’re a brunette opt for a shade that is slightly lighter than your hair color, and try to stick with a shade that has a cool or khaki base instead of a red base (such as MAC’s Cork eye shadow or Smashbox’s Brow Tech Trio

in Brunette), as they appear more natural when used on the brows. If you are a blonde try Smashbox’s Brow Tech Trio in Blonde or MAC’s eye shadow in Wedge. If you’re a bit more experienced in the brow

WEST • EAST • CENTRAL LOWER VALLEY • LAS CRUCES • JUAREZ

department you may want to try an eyebrow pomade, such as the popular Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow pomade which is quickly gaining a cult-like following among makeup bloggers. The benefit of using a gellike product is that it helps fill in and define the brows while also making your natural eyebrow hair seem thicker. It also easily helps form brows and keeps them in place for several hours. The trick here is to use very little of the product and follow your natural eyebrow arch to avoid looking like Joan Crawford.

IN Women Loosely fitted Trench Coat | This seasons hot, hot, HOT item is the oversized coat. This sleek item for outerwear goes with virtually anything. When purchasing, repeat this mantra in your head: Go big or go home.

Sweater Weather

|

Unless you need one for actual

weather purposes, ditch the scarf, with so many sweater options why not show off the detail. Try cropped, off the shoulder, bulky, fitted, colored, striped, V-neck, cowl neck, and plaid. This fall it’s all about the one-stop sweater shop.

OUT Fitted Trench coats | Tapered at the waist or peplum style is no longer on trend, stick to the straight lines and let it flow.

Infinity Scarves | The infinity scarf is basically a knitted-up choking device; not only does it mess with your hair while you put it on but it loosely hangs around your neck hardly serving a purpose.

IN

Blue is the new black | If there is one color that will be impossible to avoid this fall, its cobalt blue. This color not only exudes confidence but it has an instantly modern feel.

Light knit sweater | A simple knit sweater for fall looks great on every man, just make sure it fits appropriately and isn’t too tight or too loose. These sweaters come in many colors but my favorite is grey.

OUT Harem pants | These drop crotch pants leave me speechless in the worst way possible. Please stop, drop, and roll these pants far away from yourselves.

Shorts in cold weather | We get it guys, you all are brave and can tough out any weather … but there are many other ways to show off your heroism that don’t include wearing shorts in the cold. Brave the weather in a fashionable sense and rock some chinos. www.thecitymagazineelp.com

“The most common error made in matters of appearance is the belief that one should disdain the superficial and let the true beauty of one's soul shine through. If there are places in your body where this is a possibility, you are not attractive - you are leaking.“ Charles Lamb

HIS PREROGATIVE | By: ADRAIN VAQUERA SILVA |

This October, help ensure that Halloween remains a one day festivity rather than confusing others into thinking you’re going on a month-long celebration. For those who lack a grooming routine or have one that consists of soap, water and a little prayer, opt to use the following superior grooming products that have been selected for your personalized makeover. This small investment in your appearance is sure to transform the homeliest of mugs into the most handsome, without overexerting your wallet. If you’re ever in doubt, always remember that this is grooming advice for a man, by a man. 102

Facial Care: Menscience Daily Face Wash

Lathering, rinsing and repeating has never been so beneficial. With included ingredients such as glycol acid, vitamin C, aloe vera extract and allontoin, Menscience’s Daily Face Wash not only removes impurities and debris from your face, but does so while it softens, hydrates, revitalizes and soothes your skin. The science behind the face wash is that it clears your complexion, revealing bright and healthy skin without stripping it of its natural conditioners ($28; www.menscience.com). Recommended for: men who wash their face with the same bar of soap they use to wash their armpits and other unmentionables. Think about it – would you scratch your feet then stick your finger in your mouth? Yeah, I didn’t think so. 2

Face Mask: Evolution Man Resurfacing Clay Mask

Formulated without dangerous chemicals such as parabens, sulfates or synthetic dyes, Evolution Man’s Resurfacing Clay Mask transforms your complexion by brightening, rejuvenating and smoothing out your skin’s texture. The formula works deep through all three layers of skin, similar to that of a professional facial. The kaolin clay stimulates circulation while exfoliating and cleansing, while the witch hazel acts as a powerful antioxidant and astringent that helps clear and tighten pores ($48; www.evolution-man.com). 2

Recommended for: men who carry the toll of their age on their face. Although this product won’t change your genetic predisposition, it can help you achieve a brighter and more rejuvenated complexion (Miracles are not promised).

Eyebrows: Matte for Men Precision Grooming Tweezers 3

When it comes to eyebrow maintenance, there is a spectrum on which either extremity is unappealing and unacceptable. To not pluck enough will have others questioning if you come from some far away tribe where mirrors do not exist, and to over tweeze can have you looking surprised, angry and maybe a little shocked all at the same time. The key to eyebrow grooming is in the tools you use. Matte for Men’s Precision Grooming Tweezers are 100% stainless steel, crafted with 3

“hand-ground tips” to catch the most stubborn of unwanted and stray hairs, and are made with a non-slip coating which allows for added precision. Be careful in getting carried away though. Remember the fine line between boy and Boy George ($16; www.matteformen.com). Recommended for: men who dare to wear a fore-stache, the mustache’s northern cousin. Simply said there should be two eyebrows, gentlemen, not one. 4

Hair: Oribe Rough Luxury Molding Wax

Self-titled as a modern approach to pomade, Oribe’s Rough Luxury Molding Wax adds 4

texture and definition without the stiffness of a gel. Made with natural ingredients, the pomades composition adds multiple benefits to any hair type, whether short or layered. Wild chamomile flower and rose hip fruit extracts work from within the hair shaft to produce sheen, while wild geranium and lemongrass extracts condition, leaving hair manageable and soft. In addition, this new age pomade has pro-vitamin B5 which thickens the most straw-like of hair by building in volume ($35; www.oribe.com). Recommended for: men who have accepted frizz as part of their appearance. Also recommended for those men whose current product is so greasy, it has them looking like they went swimming in baby oil.

In a recent study eHarmony claims to be responsible for two percent of all marriages in the United States. So what is the secret to finding love online? According to experts it has a lot to do with patience, honesty, and a well-thought-out profile.

From the start, Tom wanted to read everything he could find, beginning with the first Spanish cattle debarked at Veracruz in 1521. The Spanish chroniclers didn’t talk about one type

Ernest Hemingway’s

The Sun Also Rises was released twenty-two years earlier, with a focus on the spectacle of the bullfight. Tom Lea’s interest was in tracing one corrida in all its detail, while portraying the interior of the matador.

Having gone to Juárez bullfights since he was eight years old, Tom knew those black bulls and their conformation; but, he’d never seen the kind of cattle described in the antique accounts – the contidad de bezerras brought by Don Gregorio de Villalobos to Veracruz. With his friend Ray Bell, whose

Tom admitted that if he had traveled to Mexico in a less vibrant year, he may never have discovered his passion. As it happened, when he walked through the doorway of the main house at Hacienda del Sauz, he knew he was walking into the writing of a book. Bitten by what the bullfighters call “the little worm,” he returned to Mexico again and again. Once upon arriving in Torreon to watch Manolete, he ended up painting his portrait in a suite at the Galicia Hotel with the matador standing before him. Excited to have found superior material for his LIFE story, Tom wrote a long illustrated essay on Don Julian’s Toros Bravos. The silence was deafening from LIFE and the response even worse – Mexico’s cruel sport was not the American dish and how was he coming with his beef cattle paintings? Returning to his story about animals with horns that didn’t hook anything, Tom spent five weeks painting Unloading the First Cattle in North America, Vera Cruz, 1521, paying particular attention to the Conquistador’s black heifer being debarked at Vera Cruz. He couldn’t keep the Toros Bravos out of his mind. LIFE’s severance after delivery of the cattle pictures allowed Tom the time to teach himself to write. He attended bullfights in Cd. Juárez and befriended the empresario of the bullring, Don Roberto Gonzalez. He met the bullring help, the toreros that came to town and the bulls themselves. He reported bullfights for El Paso papers and he provided bullfight-action drawings to Don Roberto to use in the advertising for his corridas. Tom studied everything he could, including José María de Cossío’s Los Toros, Tratado Técnico e Histórico, as well as pamphlets, periodicals and reviews in Mexico and Spain. He travelled deep into Mexico 110

following the bulls in places where very few gringos were seen, gaining the most graphic idea possible of how actual bullfighter’s live. Instead of taking a sketchbook or paintbox, he went to listen. The more he listened, the more he could hear the first line: “The city of Cuenca is rimmed around three sides by blue mountains” and the last, “Vamos, chico! Viviremos siempre, y nos haremos ricos!” He had only to fill in the middle.

www.theitaliankitchenelpaso.com

Tom Lea was a 40-year-old painter when he found this new discipline and adventure. Never having read studies on “how to write,” he refined from his mind all fanciness while searching for the exact words to use. He always looked for the short word, not the long word, and he treated adjectives as if they as expensive as a front row seat in the Plaza Mexico. He taught himself to write by writing, rewriting and rewriting again, then again. It took him 13 months to finish. Upon mailing the manuscript to Boston in May of 1948, the response was all positive. Only then did Tom allow himself to make a painting for the cover and illustrations as chapter headings to enhance his word-shaped bulls. For him, it was like putting icing on the cake. The Brave Bulls taught Tom Lea two devotions, two ways to work. They brought me two separate yet interacting views of creation, one in picture, one in words. FITNESS

October, 2014

First, make a reasonable goal. Saying “I want to lose weight” is not going to motivate you toward any progress. Say your overall goal is to lose 30 pounds in six months, take that goal and break it down to make a feasible calendar. For example: lose five pounds a month and one and a half pounds per week. Write down your goal in places you often

walk by so you’re constantly reminded!

I’m Lizzie Martinez, your new The City Magazine trainer, and this month I want to help the newbies get on the right track to fitness in the most comfortable and smartest way possible. The thought of stepping foot in a gym may be daunting to someone who has never worked out in his or her life. So here are a few steps to take when starting a new fitness program:

Take a “before” picture of yourself in tight-fitted clothes so that you can really see the difference when you get to your “after” picture. Take measurements of your weight on a scale, and also take width measurements with a measuring tape around your shoulders, arms, upper stomach, lower stomach, hips, glutes, and thighs. Take these

measurements monthly to motivate yourself. Remember, muscle outweighs fat so a scale alone is not the best indicator of weight loss! Start a strategic nutrition plan that is reasonable for your lifestyle. A great resource to help you implement simple nutrition into your daily life is a nutritionist or a trainer. The best weight-loss diets are high-protein, low-carb, and low-glycemic.

Identify triggers in your life and eliminate them. Try to figure out what

makes you overeat or make wrong food decisions. If you have friends or family that are bad influences, kindly inform them that you are trying to move to a healthier lifestyle and you’d appreciate no comments or peer pressure. If they care for you, they will understand and want to help you toward your goals!

Now you’re ready for the gym! The best advice I can give is to start with a personal trainer. Even if you try to create workouts on your own from a website or magazine, nobody has ever taught you the correct form and if you continue in bad form you can get hurt and have a setback. Hire a trainer for a month to learn the form; it’s a great investment!

Choose a fitness program you enjoy. If you’re a dancer, Zumba or Barre are great options. If you don’t like too much high-impact or have a previous injury, yoga is perfect for that. If you’d like a great stress release and want to build lean muscle mass, weight training is for you! Commit to three times a week to see the best results without

pushing yourself too hard, too fast. Gradually increase your activity as

your endurance and strength increase. 7. Don’t give up! The first month is the hardest; you will be sore and

you will be tired! But once you get past the first month it gets easier, you

make it a habit and lifestyle. Then you’re a fitness addict!!

umans are all gifted with five senses: the nose to smell, the tongue to taste, the ears to hear, the skin to touch, and the eyes to see. It goes

without saying that the most vital organs of sense are our eyes. 80% of what we absorb from our surroundings is from the complex optical system in our eyes. If any of the other senses give out at any time it is the eyes that will serve best at keeping us safe from danger. With that being said when your vision requires correction, you want to find the best treatment possible. In March of last year El Paso, Texas was privileged to welcome Eye’Deal Optical to set up shop. Tracing back to the initial years of operation, the optical shop started off in Silicon Valley in 1981. Formerly based out of San Francisco, California the business achieved prosperity and became well known for its service to significant members of Hollywood and top commerce. As soon as www.thecitymagazineelp.com

the community got wind of the high quality frames at great prices Eye’Deal Optical was flooded with actors, directors, producers, and prominent businessmen. The genius optician to thank for the Shangri-la of eyewear is a woman named Shawn Calvillo. With the help of family she has put her heart, mind, and soul into providing quality eyewear to her “patients” since day one. Calvillo uses the term “patients” because everybody that comes to her for optical treatment is in good hands with an expert that sincerely cares about their optical needs. She wants to know exactly what distinguishes each and every person from the rest and by analyzing each special quality she aims to tailor each person’s character, yes that precise, with a fine fitting frame. Eye’Deal has not only brought in stars but have kept them coming back for more. For one talented man it is no wonder that the shop has attracted so many stars. He left behind a legacy of laughter and will be mourned by the world for years to come. Robin Williams came into the care of Shawn Calvillo seeking out frames for the film Mrs. Doubtfire in 1993. Not only did he find the ideal frames for the box office hit but he also found more than he was looking for. 122

www.thecitymagazineelp.com

October, 2014 He found a haven in which he felt a strong sense of comfort and safekeeping. Williams became a frequent customer and bought personalized frames to wear on and off the big screen. He wore Eye’Deal frames in films such as “Jack,” “Flubber,” “Bicentennial Man,” “What Dreams May Come,” and “Nine Months.” Eye’Deal has also provided eyewear for Sean Connery, Mike Myers, Sigourney Weaver, Dennis Quaid, Hugh Grant, Tom Arnold, Nicholas Cage, Eddie Murphy, Christian Slater, and William Forsythe. Beyond the Hollywood Scene, it has attracted the attention of designers for the video games of Atari Inc. Frames were used as models for the design of various video game characters’ glasses. Engineers for Google, Yahoo, Macintosh and other leading internet corporations were in and out of the optical utopia since the late 80s as well. Employees

Maintenance, adjustments, repairs, you name it and they are willing to take care of it. Walk-ins won’t have to search for long to find their perfect match of frames. Soon after entering the quirky shop full of unique, diverse eyewear with a cool, funky taste one can see why the shop is world-renowned. Calvillo strives to bring in diverse lines of eyewear that may not be commercially known but are even more tasteful to buyers. They are made in the U.S., and imported from overseas countries such as Japan, Germany, France, Italy and many other places around the world. It
