SURVEY
The Purpose of the Plan
The purpose of the plan is to serve as a road map for long-range priorities relative to existing and future parks, trails, recreation facilities, programs, operations, preservation, maintenance, and funding. The current Parks, Recreation, and Trails Master Plan was adopted in 2001 and later updated in 2009.
The Need for the Plan
Changes in the City’s Strategic Plan, community growth, development, and demographic trends, and emerging industry changes are some of the many reasons that make it necessary to revisit the needs of the community and redevelop the master plan. In addition to changes within the community, there is a need to revisit sustainability and maintenance management and approaches for aging inventory.
The Process of the Plan
Community engagement and public input are essential to the planning process and represent one of the three phases that will help us develop the plan. Together, we'll identify our current State of Play and engage the community to explore needs and priorities.

dancing THE BEAUTY OF DANCE IS MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE Dance classes can help a child’s emotional well-being. When kids participate
in dance classes and increase their level of physical fitness, they may feel emotionally and mentally more positive. When you exercise, you release chemicals called endorphins that trigger positive feelings. Dance also encourages kids to release their inhibitions and build confidence. Dance classes can help kids develop a more positive self-image, which is especially important for children who may struggle with their weight. Finally, dance requires a certain level of focus and practice. Kids can learn to focus their movements, control their emotional energy, and practice to achieve higher goals. These skills will help a child’s emotional well-being in academics as well.
Dance classes can improve a child’s social skills and self-esteem. Dance classes
encourage kids to interact with other children their own age. Through these interactions, your child may develop new and lasting friendships. Choreography often requires teamwork, patience, and partnership. Kids will learn how to move in a group and synchronize. They will also learn the value of teamwork to achieve goals. With these skills, kids will improve their socialization. If your child is shy, dance is a beneficial way of building trust and openness. This social activity can help kids break out of their shell, develop their self-esteem, and improve their communication skills.

Grow the menu of sport options, create better connections to vulnerable populations, and more athletes-for-life will emerge In a survey conducted by the U.S. Olympic Committee, 7 out of 10 Olympians said they grew up as multi-sport athletes, and nearly all called it “valuable.
Emerging research indicates that a sport-sampling pathway leads to less burnout, less social isolation, better performance, and, most importantly, more lifelong enjoyment in sport. Debunking the myth of early specialization presents an opportunity for community sport organizations to align behind a common experience for kids through age 12. It buys oxygen for the notion that the development of physical literacy should be the priority, fostered by sport sampling. But that commitment needs to be made to all children, with special efforts designed to reach the sedentary and those who may not be aware of, or have the resources to afford, activities outside the mainstream. From the Sport for All, Play for Life report
Playing with Friends is a BIG Motivator
Soccer paid a heavy price for underestimating kids’ desire to play with friends. In an effort to develop better prospects for its national teams, the U.S. Soccer Federation two years ago began mandating that affiliated organizations down to the community level stop forming teams based on birthdates that fell within the school year. Instead, teams at every age level were reorganized based on calendar year birthdates, in which kids are less likely to play with same-grade peers. That broke up teams who have been playing together for years. Only 14.8 percent of children ages 6 to 12 played soccer in 2017, down from 17 percent in 2015.2 For children ages 6 to 17, soccer had the highest churn rate in 2017 among sports evaluated by the Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) — meaning 19.2 percent of youth returned to soccer or started playing, but 25.2 percent of youth who used to play soccer left the game.

PICKLEBALL The fastest growing sport you've never heard of
Pickleball is an indoor or outdoor paddle sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. The game has had a 650 percent increase in numbers over the last six years, according to USA Pickleball Association. The biggest subset of that growth is not in the over-60 crowd, says Justin Maloof, executive director of USAPA, but the younger set.
Beyond being fun, it's racking
up some serious benefits!
Beyond being fun, pickleball has proven to rack up benefits whether played casually or hard core. It was originally made popular by Baby Boomers, but the sport has made a generational jump and is now being played by all ages. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association 2018 Participant Report, pickleball currently has 3.1 million players in the US. Regardless of age, health benefits give pickleball a large appeal physically, socially, and mentally.
Future courts will be built in phases.

Can Lower Your Risk of Heart Disease A recent study in the International Journal of Research in Exercise Physiology found middle-aged and older adults who played one hour of pickleball three days per week for six weeks improved their blood pressure, cholesterol, and cardiorespiratory fitness levels. Can Cut Your Risk of Depression Exercise in general is a proven mood booster—and pickleball is no exception. A recent study in Leisure Studies found older adults who played in pickleball tournaments had a lower risk of depression. Can Get you Hooked on Exercise A study in the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity found people become loyal to the sport because it helps them meet their fitness goals and enhance social connections. It’s a two-for-one workout!

The Benefits of Creativity for Older Adults By Carleen Brice
Most people agree that art making is good for kids, but being creative is good for adults, too. And, contrary to conventional wisdom, creativity is especially good for older adults, says Tim Carpenter, founder and executive director of EngAGE. “What artists know is that creativity is a way for your mind to be open to new things,” Carpenter said. “The act of creating something leads to happiness, and getting out there taking classes and such is a form of socialization and opens your world.” But being creative isn’t just good for you mentally, it has physical benefits as well. Carpenter pointed to a study by geriatric psychologist Gene Cohen as evidence. “This study showed that people who become and stay involved in arts courses taught by professional-level artists saw huge improvements in their physical health.” And while the sooner people can start creative pursuits, the greater effect it will have, Carpenter noted it’s never too late to get the benefits of creativity. “Americans see getting older as this ending point and decline whereas research on the brain shows the opposite. Your brain increases its ability to make new connections,” he said. “Our brain continues to grow as we get older, and certain forms of creativity fire neurons in a way that creates connections in the brain.” So where should baby boomers and WWII-generation folks begin? Carpenter said, “Dust off your dreams.” “Look at the things you always wanted to do but didn’t think you had the time to do because of work and family obligations,” he said. “I know people who go to stand-up comedy classes or learn to sing.” Stand-up comedy and singing in public may sound pretty bold, but don’t worry, Carpenter also suggests going to museums and taking art classes. “Learning about art and making art with your hands is really good for you. Frankly, just try something,” he said. “Everyone has the ability to be creative and to make art. We’re told aging diminishes ability, but that’s just not true. We have to undo these myths.”
