THE MEMBERS
SHEILA MILLER---------------------------------------------
Sheila Miller has been participating in Denton Senior programs since 2013. She moved to North Texas from New Mexico and was looking for something to keep her active and healthy, plus she didn’t really know anyone here. Sheila knew she needed to get connected and thought, what better place than the local Senior Center? Sheila saw an ad in the newspaper for the Denton Senior Center and was immediately intrigued. Ever since she has been attending group exercise classes and especially loves chatting with other members before and after class. The fitness classes are a great motivator to get out for the day and get moving. Sheila fell in love with the many painting classes and is a talented artist, and you can view some of her artwork around the center or in Aletha’s Craft Gift Store. Early on in her time here, Sheila started volunteering at the Front Desk to meet and greet people every day. Through this opportunity, she made life-long friendships and she now serves as the Secretary of the Denton Senior Center Advisory Council and has been on the council for seven years. Shelia says, “The staff is so professional and personnel which makes it a joy to come to the center.” Plus, she is in awe of the wide variety of programs offered for the 50+ community! There is truly something for everyone – from fitness, to games, and education seminars.
“Come join me for the next exercise class offered for free [with a rec pass] on Tuesdays and Thursdays.”

“I encourage Seniors to come to The American Legion Hall Senior Center and join me with activities planned weekly. It will keep you active and you won’t get old.”
SEEKING NATIONAL ACCREDITATION
The American Legion Hall Senior Center and Denton Senior Center are both affiliates of the National Council on Aging’s (NCOA) and the National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC). We know, that is a lot of acronyms, but this all means our facilities are connected to a nation-wide network of passionate agencies that are committed to supporting and strengthening senior centers. NISC is continually disseminating best practices and innovating program to its affiliates, but the organization also advocates for senior services and is a voice to the lawmakers.
The mission of NISC is to advance the quality of senior centers across the nation, and one way to accomplish that is by setting national standards of excellence for senior center staff, volunteers, and other stakeholders to follow. The organization established nine standards that serve as a guide to improve center operations and offer excellence on all levels to members of the public. The senior center staff have embarked on the path to National Accreditation and will begin a “Self-Assessment” process to truly evaluate our programs and operations. This process will reveal the things that are done well, or up to standard, and the things that need improvement.
We need your help! In order to go through the process successfully, we need a self-assessment committee made up of staff and members of the community from a variety of business, organizations, volunteer groups, and most importantly, regular participants!
This is a great way to provide meaningful feedback to make our senior centers the best they can be and to learn about the process it takes to get there. If you are interested in joining this committee and working with senior center staff to accomplish an exciting goal, please reach out to Nicole.Brasher@cityofdenton.com.
Achieving a major milestone of National Accreditation not only brings success to our department and community, but also opens the door wide open for amazing opportunities. Plus, who doesn’t like a good bragging right?

“ Improvements in mental health, emotional, psychological, and social well-being and cognitive function are also associated with regular physical activity. Despite these health benefits, physical activity levels amongst older adults remain below the recommended 150 min/week. The exercise recommendations from WHO include both aerobic exercise and strength exercise as well as balance exercises to reduce the risk of falls. If older adults cannot follow the guidelines because of chronic conditions, they should be as active as their ability and conditions allow. It is important to note that the recommended amount of physical activity is in addition to routine activities of daily living like self-care, cooking, and shopping, to mention a few. “ (National Library of Medicine)

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY CAN HELP
u Reduce feelings of depression and stress, while imprving your mood and overall emotional well-being
u Increase your energy level u Improve sleep u Empower you to feel more in control
In addition, exercise and physical activity may possibly improve or maintain some aspects of cognitive function, such as your ability to shift quickly between tasks, plan an activity, and ignore irrelevant information.
Here are some exercise ideas to help you lift your mood:
u Walking, bicycling, or dancing. Endurance activities increase your breathing, get your heart pumping, and boost chemicals in your body that may improve mood.
u Yoga. This mind and body practice typically combines physical postures, breathing exercises, and relaxation.
u Tai Chi. This "moving meditation" involves shifting the body slowly, gently, and precisely, while breathing deeply.
u Activities you enjoy. Whether it’s gardening, playing tennis, or kicking around a soccer ball with your grand children, choose an activity you want to do, not one you have to do.
