Gilmore Construction Internship Opportunities Help Bring Future Goals Into Focus By Jeff Howard

As summer approaches, young men and women within the Montbello and greater Denver community are taking very active measures in the pursuit of summer internships. In the Montbello community, Gilmore Construction, general contractors for the Montbello FreshLo Hub development, is once again planning to offer talented students interested in the construction industry the opportunity to work alongside construction engineering professionals. Last summer, two very ambitious college students were able to gain some practical knowledge before making their way back to campus. Senior Myles Pace and sophomore Rachel Randolph, who attend Prairie View A&M and the University of Colorado at Denver, respectively, worked sideby-side with the decision-makers on projects both large and small.

For Myles, the opportunity to serve as an intern for the FreshLo Hub general contractor has set him on a path that sees a bright future ahead. The Prairie View A&M Architecture & Construction Science double major has jumped into the construction industry with both feet since his first introduction to the company. “I was introduced to Gilmore based on the recommendation of one of my mentors, Dewey Brigham,” Myles indicated. “My firstyear interning with Gilmore was in 2019, and I came back because I like the atmosphere. I really enjoy the people, and I have learned a ton.” For Rachel, the introduction came through her grandmother’s connection at church, certainly showing the power of community and goodwill. She, too, is majoring in Architecture and has decided to make Construction Management her minor. Though very early in

her collegiate career, she certainly realizes the power of the exposure she has received from Gilmore Construction. “While I am not really sure how or what might await me in the future, I do know the internship taught me a lot,” Rachel explained. “Having the chance to see various aspects of the industry at work, like safety management, has opened my eyes to how I might be a better architect if given the opportunity in the years to come.” Of course, for Both Myles and Rachel, the motivation to grow has been spurred on by the many advocates in their corner at Gilmore Construction. These two students have experienced a concerted effort on the firm’s part to offer opportunities to young men and women of color interested in learning and exploring the construction business. Through Myles’ and Rachel’s example, Gilmore Construction hopes to see a pipeline created for youth in the construction field with skilled labor at a premium. “Providing students access to real-time education and field training is a heartstring for us,” says Edweena Gilmore, Executive Vice President of Administration, who is taking the lead for Gilmore on community Outreach and Engagement for the FreshLo Hub project. “It is an honor for Gilmore to take under its wing young collegiate scholars who are interested in the construction profession. Gilmore is heavily committed to engaging young people and directing them to consider all of the career opportunities the construction industry has to offer.” And the company doesn’t just talk the talk; they walk the walk when it comes to being

present in the community. For more than seven years, CEO Jake Gilmore, as an instructor, and Gilmore employees, as professional speakers, support STEM classes from 5th grade to seniors in high school for minority students through the Colorado Association of Black Professional Engineers and Scientists (CABES). The company encourages all students to investigate CABES for STEM classes, including Construction, Civil, and Architectural Engineering disciplines as well as other fields like Bio-Chemical, Robot, Electrical, and more offered through this diverse program. Gilmore is currently exploring avenues and programs to engage students in the Montbello community during the FreshLo Hub project construction. The company has been successful in working with Denver Public Schools in an effort to develop a solid connection to achieve the expanded opportunities’ goal.
