WELCOME TO YOUR

From the

EDITORS DESK Happy New Year everyone, let’s hope it’s a good one. For those of you that don’t already know the Copishop has closed down. No we haven’t moved to new premises we have closed the business altogether. Unfortunatley we are another casualty of “The Crisis”. The good news is that the Grapevine is now free again, the bad news is that it is only available online. We apologise to our loyal readers who supported us by buying the Grapevine, enabling us to continue printing for as long as we did, unfortunatley we can no longer afford to print the magazine but the content will be the same if not better as an online publication. It will of course be full colour with links to all our advertisers. Advertising will be free for the first three months so if you have a business to advertise we suggest you make the most of this special offer. Now that I have lots more time on my hands I will be catching up on all the neccessary chores around the house that have been neglected over the past five years. Painting, gardening and repairing to name but a few. So it will be a few months before I can relax and put my feet up. I may even begin to shed a few of the extra pounds that I have gained from sitting behind a desk for so long. That will be a bonus. I hope you find somewhere to get your photcopies done at a reasonable price and all the other things we did for you. I will miss my customers who came in to chat, but if you have any news you can still reach us on our e.mail address which will remain the same. copishopjavea@yahoo.com I hope 2013 will be a happier year for you all. As ever T.T.F.N. Sue

Is your pool looking a little tired? ..... Special offer for ‘The Grapevine’ Readers. Over the years a pool will become more difficult to keep clean and algae free as the tile grout breaks down and becomes discoloured, making the pool less attractive and in some cases very uninviting. In time the chemicals in the pool will have had an effect on the grout and if the ph of the pool has moved towards acid, the grout can have dissolved at an alarming pace! As the grout starts to recede the rate at which tiles become dislodged increases; the grout around the tiles has a significant effect on ensuring they stay put. If you are able to see a distinct gap / dip between the pool tiles and the grout is not flush with the tile surface then re-grouting will be required at some point. Often what’s left of the original white grout in your pool changes from white to pale blue indicating copper sulphate been used as an algaecide over the years? Years of sun screen (even though everyone always showers first) causes a nasty black scum around the water line that is practically impossible to clean; a problem rental properties are particularly susceptible to. Another problem that again is very common and nearly impossible to eradicate is the dreaded black algae that can spread over the whole pool grout at an alarming rate, particularly in a summer like we have just had with the prolonged high water temperatures. The black algae is so difficult to control as it is chemical resistant and tends to put a ‘root’ deep into the grout that cannot easily be killed, scrubbing with a stainless steel brush will normally have a temporary effect and improve the look of the pool but in the majority of cases it returns and normally very quickly if the pool ph is not perfect. Chemical treating is reasonably expensive at around €30 a litre for the algaecide but the real effort comes with the scrubbing of the walls often unsuccessfully. In short, re-grouting will normally solve all of the above problems and ensure your pool looks its best with bright white grout, no missing tiles and a vastly improved if not perfect waterline. The empty pool is also a good opportunity to ensure that pool lights are working properly, the rubber seals are in good condition and they are seated correctly in or on the pool wall. Re-grouting involves a number of processes including high pressure commercial power washing, acid cleaning, chemical sanitising, replacing / re-fixing missing tiles and the use of a quality premium product for regrouting; as well as chemical balancing once the pool is refilled. It’s also often a good time to consider changing the sand in your filter and having the pool coronation cleaned. In short rejuvenating your pool ready for next season at a surprisingly competitive price. Please give me a call if you have any questions regarding the above, I’m happy to come and give a genuine no-obligation quote in the Javea area. Also happy to provide contact details of a number of clients who have had their pools completed in the last year! Fully booked for the rest of this year but plenty of time before the new season to have your pool transformed. From now until the end of March 2013 any pool re-grout for Grapevine readers will include cleaning of the coronation at no charge (normally between €60 and €100. This can mean that a black and mouldy coronation can be brought back to a new condition and your whole pool can sparkle for the new season. Please call Clive, Javea Handyman on 625 397 209 to arrange your no obligation quote and mention this Grapevine article.

Will you live to see 90? I recently picked a new primary care doctor. After two visits and exhaustive Lab tests, he said I was doing 'fairly well' for my age. (I just reached 68). A little concerned about that comment, I couldn't resist asking him, 'Do you think I'll live to be 90?' He asked, 'Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer, wine or hard liquor?' 'Oh no,' I replied. 'I'm not doing drugs, either!' Then he asked, 'Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued Ribs?' 'I said, 'Not much... my former doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy!' 'Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf, boating, sailing, hiking, or bicycling?' 'No, I don't,' I said. He asked, 'Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lots of sex?' 'No,' I said... He looked at me and said,.. 'Then, why do you want to live to 90? Communication? A judge was interviewing a woman regarding her pending divorce, and asked, "What are the grounds for your divorce? " She replied, "About four acres and a nice little home in the middle of the property with a stream running by." "No," he said, "I mean what is the foundation of this case?" "It is made of concrete, bricks and mortar," she responded. "I mean," he continued, "What are your relations like?" "I have an aunt and uncle living here in town, and so do my husband's parents." He said, "Do you have a real grudge?" "No," she replied, "We have a two-car car-port and have never really needed one." "Please," he tried again, "is there any infidelity in your marriage?" "Yes, both my son and daughter have stereo sets. We don't necessarily like the music, but the answer to your questions is yes." "Ma'am, does your husband ever beat you up?" "Yes," she responded, "about twice a week he gets up earlier than I do." Finally, in frustration, the judge asked, "Lady, why do you want a divorce?" "Oh, I don't want a divorce," she replied. "I've never wanted a divorce. My husband does. He said he can't communicate with me!

Jose Chulvi MAYOR OF JAVEA

Dear Grapevine Friends. Another new year has arrived, and as has become customary, presents me with a further occasion to be in touch with you. I want to take this opportunity to tell you about many of the urgent issues which had to be dealt with at the Town Hall during the last few weeks of 2012. One of the greatest challenges that lay ahead of us was to prepare and present the municipal budget for 2013, after the severe drop in municipal tax revenues caused by the Madrid Supreme Court decision in respect of the catastro (property) valuations. This had a dramatic effect by substantially reducing Xàbia’s IBI tax income. Our main goal has been to ensure that the level of public services was not unduly affected, and finally we succeeded in achieving this objective. After thoroughly evaluating the actual revenue that we would expect to receive, I made a number of visits to Madrid to establish what would be the financial contribution for Xàbia in 2013 by the Central Government. Additionally the Town Hall’s inspectors have been vigorously engaged in a thorough inspection process to ensure that every citizen pays the appropriate taxes applicable to them. This process revealed that for various reasons more than 400 properties in Xàbia were not paying their IBI tax. This has been corrected and the property owners involved will be paying the legal maximum of four years arrears, which will make a useful contribution to the Town Hall’s finances. It was then time to study how and where we could

Page 5

reduce costs. Obviously, the budget which had to suffer the most significant reduction was the Fiestas budget, which will effectively be reduced by 50% compared to 2011. We will however provide from our reduced budget a Fiestas programme which we feel will continue to attract and entertain our tourist visitors, and maintain our local traditions. We will be reducing staff expenses and current expenditure by taking energy saving measures and eliminating wasteful spending. However what is most important, the budget for departments such as Social Services, Economic Development, Public Safety and Civil Protection will not be reduced. In addition we will be maintaining another very important service, our agreement with the Red Cross to provide emergency medical transport. Other municipalities do not pay this, but we believe that something as vital as health is so important that we had to maintain this service, and consequently have signed an agreement for the next three years, which is financially advantageous for the Town Hall. We have also renegotiated the cleaning and garbage collection contract whilst at the same time maintaining a similar level of services. Another strategy has been to reduce the burden of rents paid by the Town Hall by the transfer of the Port library and the headquarters of the Protección Civil to existing municipal buildings. This is in short the budget for 2013, in which austerity measures are being heavily applied to the least essential services, whilst maintaining continuity in the really important basic and fundamental needs of the community. On the positive side we can look forward in 2013 to enjoying the renovated Paseo del Arenal and the convenience of the new municipal bus station. I wish you a 2013 full of health, hoping that things will change for the better and with confidence that together we can achieve our objectives. My message for 2013

The Russians are also making their presence felt in other popular areas like the Costa Blanca, with sales to Russians in Alicante province up by 34pc in the first quarter of last year, according to data from local notaries. If the Spanish Government goes ahead with plans to give residency permits to Russians who spend more than €160,000 on a house in Spain, the number of Russians investing in Spanish property could surge. Meanwhile, Spanish demand on the Costa del Sol is now “very weak” says Prado. “Very little is sold and it has practically collapsed.” To make matters worse, the regional government of Andalucia hasn’t paid bills to the tune of 148 million Euros it owes to local builders.

HELL EXPLAINED BY A CHEMISTRY STUDENT The following is an actual question given on a University ofArizona chemistry midterm, and an actual answer turned in by a student. The answer by one student was so 'profound' that the professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well. Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)? Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following: First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving, which is unlikely. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added.

This gives two possibilities: 1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose.

... and it was just so ... ! In ancient Israel , it came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a young wife by the name of Dot. And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she was often called Amazon Dot Com. And she said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why dost thou travel so far from town to town with thy goods when thou canst trade without ever leaving thy tent?" And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load, but simply said, "How, dear?" And Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what you have for sale, and they will reply telling you who hath the best price. And the sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)." Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. And the drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever having to

With Spanish 10Y yields hovering at a 'relatively' healthy 5%, having been driven inexorably lower on the promise of ECB assistance at some time in the future, the market has become increasingly unsure of just who it is that keeps bidding for this stuff. Well, wonder no longer. As the WSJ notes, Spain has been quietly tapping the country's richest piggy bank, the Social Security Reserve Fund, as a buyer of last resort for Spanish government bonds - with at least 90% of the €65 billion ($85.7 billion) fund has been invested in increasingly risky Spanish debt. Of course, this is nothing new, the US (and the Irish) have been using quasigovernment entities to fund themselves in a mutually-

whereas in Spain the marginal buyer is critical to support the sinking ship. The Spanish defend the use of pension funds to buy bonds as sustainable as long as it can issue bonds - and yet the only way it can actually get the bonds off in the public markets is through using the pension fund assets. The pensioners sum it up perfectly "We are very worried about this, we just don't know who's going to pay for the pensions of those who are younger now," or those who are older we would add.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

English language films in Jávea puerto have resumed.

Restaurante LE GOURMAND : This excellent restaurant reopened in mid-December at the former premises of < 121 > on the Jesús Pobre road. Six of us enjoyed a wonderful meal there on 31st December and we remain of the opinion that Benjamin's move away from front-line tourism (at Arenal) will enable his reputation better to spread through the resident community and especially to offer their excellent creative French-based cuisine to the Montgó area and Jesús Pobre. Despite the recession there are still good things happening !! Muzak low and always reduced on request.

JÁVEA : CINEMA JAYAN - special offer (dinner + ticket on Tues - Wed - Thurs at 18:45h for only €14) : The excellent Restaurante LA RENDA is right beside the Cinema Jayan and offers a pre-performance menu del día including your cinema ticket for €14 (which means, on a Tues or a Wed., a meal will cost you €8 !). This newly and beautifully appointed restaurant offers some some serious, adventurous and very creative cuisine. To take up this offer you must book. FEBRUARY 7th : THE NEXT ENGLISH TEA at the JÁVEA PARADOR will be on Thursday February 7th. This excellent - and very successful event - is now well established by an excellent turnout on Nov.1st so the word is getting around as to the very high quality. popular. This is a regular event on the first Thursday of every month (excl. July/August). The hotel offers perfectly made tea (incl. Earl Grey) as well as cucumber sandwiches, delicious scones (with clotted cream and red jam) and carrot & walnut cake and a glass of Cava to finish. A delight. Yes, readers .... It is a triumph and all for €10. The next tea will be on Thursday 7th February (16:30h - 18:00h) Because the teas have been so successful it remains essential to book [96 579 0200]. Restaurant ATALAYA : On the right side of Jávea's Arenal beach (above Scallops). This restaurant serves creative dishes of superb quality and many have asked why it has only recently joined the list. The reason has been some of the most offensive/loud muzak of any restaurant in the area (and even if turned down, most ungraciously, they soon jacked it up again - three times on one visit). However recent reports suggest they may have begun to understand how clients have been offended by the noise for we are told that on recent visits there was none !! THE GRAPEVINE, January 2013

JAVEA U3A members are back in business after the Christmas and New Year festivities and looking forward to another packed programme of events over the next 12 months. There is still much talk about the hilarious Christmas Extravaganza, which was put on by committee members at the general meeting at the Parador Hotel in December and, as promised in last month’s Grapevine, here are some revealing photos from the event. DANCE-TIME: The Javea U3A dance troupe – Highlight of the show was a sketch featuring association Jean Miller, Brenda Bates, Karen White, Jacqui president Peter Allin, membership secretary Howard and Ian Rogerson, Wilma Stevenson, Carol Pilgram and John Bellinger-Smith - give Strictly Come Parker and fellow member Roy Heaton. The three of Dancing a run for its money as they step out to them, prancing around half-naked singing “Walking Viva Espana! Round in Women’s Underwear” to the tune of Winter Wonderland, was a sight to behold and brought the Charity donation house down! Javea U3A has presented a cheque for €4,400 to its charity of the year 2013, Cancer Care Javea. Members donated the money from a number of functions during the year and the charity expressed its sincere gratitude when U3A president Peter Allin handed over the cheque at the December general meeting. The total included over €1,000 from the May Ball and €1,500 from an Evening of Dance and Music held at the home of committee members John Bellinger-Smith and Carol Pilgram. All monies raised by the charity are donated to hospitals for equipment, research, patient care and individuals, together with other cancer-related organisations. WHAT A DRAG! THE HOBBY HORSE AND GOAT Timo Dee’s view on things, in and out of Javea, from up on his hobbyhorse (and with his old goat.)

Pushing on a bit MOG I have worrying over the New Year (and nothing new about that! ) I heard Timo ( he's referring to me) say that he will be pushiing on for 70 this year. HOBBY. What !!?? Is he trying to break the speed limit? MOG. 70 is the limit in the UK; they are lot more generous over here, allowing you up to 120...Even so, can the three of us really go that fast? HOBBY I doubt it. Most older ones amongst us do get a bit creaky and often require replacement parts Come to think of it, my little wheels are a bit wobbly nowadays MOG I wonder if he really is thinking about limits HOBBY He keeps telling folk to remember that he retyred early almost fouteen years ago now. MOG And you means it's now time for a further new set of new tyres? HOBBY That' the score! MOG Like the latest from football, cricket, rugby and tennis? HOBBY No, I am referring to somethig far more personal MOG Like music? You know I enjoy a happy tune, but could never manage to read the score HOBBY. You have almost clicked on it MOG I am always hitting the wrong keys HOBBY So you do know some music, if you can tell when you have gone wrong MOG Delete , delete.... that's not a tune on the computer that I enjoy at all, and find very boring HOBBY I mean score in that other sense of a number MOG Not a happy litle iumber then? So One, two. three, four.. Just how far do you want me to count? HOBBY As far as the Bible says you should count MOG The Bible is another very long book from which can only rarely recall a note, except excerpts HOBBY. The Bible reminds you that i the allotted number is three score and ten MOG That does not help if I do not know what the score is HOBBY No one ever does, but the Bible gives a strong hint MOG Help me a bit, if you can HOBBY Twenty MOG Twenty what,, one two three again? HOBBY Twenty is a score MOG Of what?

THE GRAPEVINE, January 2013

HOBBY The number quoted calculates as being the years of your life MOG But some seem to last a lot longer, while there are are others that hardly last even a day, or a moth, or far fewer years HOBBY The key word here is allotted MOG You mean as in lottery? HOBBY Just so. MOG The Bible encourages us to gamble with the lottery? HOBBY No, just to accept the result. MOG Then no one knows precisely,? HOBBY Except those very few who decide they do not want to wait any longer for the result MOG These few decide the timing of the inevitable for themselves? HOBBY Yes... and in so doing, may upset any of those those that may have known them, for however long that may have been MOG So all ends in sorrow, one way or another? HOBBY Not all. The good thing that comes out of all this is that sorrow can turn quickly into appreciation of happier times past . MOG And perhaps appreciation of the good things that person did , while they still had that chance in the lottery? HOBBY All for the good? Spot on ! MOG My worry NOW is what will happen one day , dear Hobby, to both you and me? HOBBY We may get separated, but there are plenty of folk looking to adopt us MOG Have they have missd out on having an old goat or even a hobby horse of their own? HOBBY Yes indeed, but the adoption process happens surprisingly quietly MOG New adventures for us then? HOBBY Yes, for us two, life continues in its own special way MOG That's one thing less for me to be concerned about. HOBBY Then how are they gettting on with paving the Arenal? MOG It's been a bit of a mess over Christmas. HOBBY Let's pop along again to see for ourselves! MOG They said it should all finish this year, or was it next? HOBBY All in its allotted time. MOG We are back on the lottery again...

THE GRAPEVINE, January 2013

And so it starts… 2013 has started with a mixture of ups and downs. Now that the New Year celebrations have calmed down and we all start to take stock of Jávea and Spain in the cold light of day, while there are many new and exciting projects in the offing, many good businesses are closing their doors. Hats off to Derek and Sue for taking the brave step to move the Grapevine back to a Free footing, by putting it online. There is no reason why it should not go from strength to strength now that its costs have been capped and its editors are no longer restricted by length. In the new format it can also be downloaded and shared, so for advertisers the circulation should be massive, compared with the limitations of distribution by hand, courier and post. MABC’s magazine 5Ws (www.5ws.biz ) loses nothing by being wholly online. We are steadily building up a good readership and the quality and range of the articles may be eclectic, but it is certainly varied and makes for a good read. With the growth in quality, free, online magazines and papers, with local and original content (and the increase in smart phones and tablets capable of reading them anywhere and any time) this is a market area ripe for growth. I am certainly happy to be out and about and know that I have the latest issues of my favourite magazines in my pocket for my next coffee break, wherever I am. Marina Alta Business Club is growing, now that we have restarted our meetings in Denia (February 15th Haweli Restaurant, Las Marinas, Denia 12:30 Lunch ), we have changed our first meeting of the month to Tiffany’s Bar along the Jesus Pobre Road (19:30 February 7th ) and our second Jávea meeting is at Digby’s Bar in the Arenal (Jávea Park) on the 21st February 19:30. Amongst many other benefits our paid membership includes free advertising in 5Ws magazine, so we no longer need to keep meetings for members only. We are opening our meetings to make them freely available to members and non-members alike. With the recession now firmly entrenched in Spain and the need for small businesses to thrive, networking is becoming increasingly important. The main purpose behind the club is to provide businesses with a platform for growth. We feel that making the networking element of the club free, will encourage greater interaction between local businesses. Market awareness is a key feature for future growth. Trust can only be built up by interaction and familiarity. When money is tight and costs are high knowing the right people becomes an invaluable business tool, networking is always important for a business, but in a recession, it becomes crucial. If you are in business, why not come to a meeting? You never know where it might lead… Gaile Griffin Peers, MABC Club Manager - www.mabc.biz and www.mabusinessclub.com. Craft Corner Decopatch Happy New Year, the New Year is a great time to start a new hobby. Decopatch is a similar technique to paper mache. It is the creative art of assembling, pasting and varnishing paper pieces to decorate objects. Decopatch is an adaption of the French word decoupage or decouper, which in English means to cut out. Decopatch can be enjoyed by all ages, with a wide selection of papers available that will allow you to decorate and transform existing items that you have at home. Or you could create a beautiful display piece by purchasing one of our paper mache craft blanks. Decopatch paper is able to be easily applied to any surface, for example metal, wood, paper mache, glass , plastic, wicker, ceramic and card. You can use the paper on both flat and uneven surfaces. The paper is very thin,

Getting Started Cut or tear the decopatch paper into small pieces and apply Paperpatch glossy glue using a hog bristle brush to the area where the paper is to be placed. Place one piece of the decopatch paper on the glued surface then apply a fresh coating of Paperpatch glue on the surface, smoothing the paper from the centre to the edge to remove any excess glue. Repeat this process until the entire object has been covered. Once the item has been left to dry it can be varnished with Aquapro professional varnish which provides a protective coating with a lustrous finish. Your finished project can be enhanced with beads, gems and ribbons and other embellishments once dry.

but strong and flexible so it produces a smooth texture and a real paint effect. Decopatch paper is deep-dyed and glazed. It will not break apart when glued and the colours will never fade or run. What will I need to get started? •

with Dr Christoph Semler

Dr. Christoph Semler qualified as a doctor at the University of Frankfurt and then specialised in General Practice in the UK. He is a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners, holds a Diploma from the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, a Diploma in Child Health Surveillance. He opened his private practice in Jåvea in 2001. Dr Semler is fluent in English, Spanish and French and has a working knowledge of Dutch. Dear doctor, I have some questions regards prostate cancer. My GP in Benissa has found that my prostate marker is too high, I also had an ultrasoundscan of my prostate. Now I have been referred to the hospital in Denia to see a specialist, they might want to take a biopsy. Though nothing has been confirmed yet, I feel they suspect I might have prostate cancer. I am 67 years old and know that this is the age for it. There is an awful lot of information to be had on this cancer, also my friends tell me lot´s of different stories. Some even say I should not worry as you do not die of it but with it. I do not know what the result of the biopsy is going to be, of course. It might all be nothing. But if I had cancer of the prostate, what can I expect? Dear Brian, I can easily understand that you are concerned or even worried. It is always hard to have to deal with uncertainty especially when your own health is at stake. Hopefully you will not have to wait too long for the biopsy of your prostate. And it is the result of this biopsy which

will determine how bad your illness is and how to continue any treatment. That is assuming you do indeed have prostate cancer. Based on abnormal results of the blood test for PSA and an ultrasound examination of the prostate gland alone there might still be nothing wrong with you. That is because both tests are only so good and will often give abnormal results when in fact there is no prostate cancer at all. That is the reason the blood test for PSA is not longer offered as a screening test by many national health systems through their GPs. In the UK for example GPs cannot request this test any longer but have to refer patients to see the urologist if they suspect there might be prostate illness. The reason for this restriction being that you worry too many men unnecessarily with abnormal results who then, after a long and stressful time of further tests are found to be free from prostate illness, including cancer. But you are right in the middle of this phase and other than putting it at the back of your mind until the appointment for the biop-

sy is through, there is nothing else you can do. You have already found out that there is a lot of confusing information available regards prostate cancer and of course your friends all know better anyway. The least helpful remark is that regards dying with it but not from it, so why worry. How can you possibly know what you are going to die of until it is too late? This reassuringly meant phrase is only true in hindsight and rarely useful for decision making. It is certainly true that in old men, older than 75 years or even 80years, finding prostate cancer in its early stage is of no concern. Then it is true that the cancer will most likely not contribute to their passing away and that these men will die from other causes. But you are not there, your decision must be based on other factors. The most important being the result of the biopsy. Assuming there is cancer what matters now is the stage the cancer is at. Without getting too technical, there is an internationally recognized staging system for prostate cancer and treatment options depend on the stage each patient is at when diagnosed for the first time. For many men, if not the majority, the initial treatment is what is called active surveillance. It translates into not doing anything but regularly checking on the cancer and watch for signs of progress. If there is no progress, fine, repeat the test in six months. If there is progress, and it might well take many years for such progress to happen, then treat according to stage of illness. Should it from the start of turn out to be a more

aggressive cancer then some sort of intervention might well be necessary. Again there are options to chose from. One is having an operation another is some form of radiotherapy and in very advanced cases chemotherapy will also be used. So, to sum up: what you need first is a firm diagnosis and a staging if there is indeed cancer. What you can expect then is depending on the stage your illness is at. If it is at an early stage, then it might well be active surveillance of the cancer and no operation or other treatment. If it looks like a more advanced stage then expect that operation in combination with radiotherapy might well be offered. A lot also depends on what services are available at your hospital. Some places are more keen on surgery whereas others have got a good department of nuclear medicine and can provide radiotherapy. All in all prognosis for prostate cancer is by far not as bad as it is for other types of cancers. If caught and treated early survival rates can be as high as 90%. That sounds really quite reassuring.

TOWN HALLS USE AN ERRONEOUS FORMULA IN THE CALCULATION OF THE MUNICIPAL CAPITAL GAINS TAX AND COULD BE OBLIGED TO RETURN THE EXCESS CHARGED. (Miguel Just Calvo, Economist) Councils say they apply the Ley de Haciendas Locales when they charge this tax, but they apply it wrong since they use a mathematical formula that does not tax capital gains obtained at the time of the sale, as set out in the law, but instead calculates a future surplus value which is neither real nor achievable, nor indeed legal.

Aldea felina is a charity registered in Spain to shelter, feed and re-home cats abandoned in the Denia area. Our helpers all work on a volunrary basis

The Plusvalía, the so-called tax on the increase of the value of the land of urban nature, applies on the sale of a property (such as housing, parking space, a local, etc.), or on receipt of an inheritance or a donation.

We have a variety of feline friends, old and young, waiting to be adopted. All adult cats are blood tested, wormed, vaccinated and sterilised and the kittens wormed and vaccinated. If you can give a loving home to any please call Lynda on 648100629.

This tax should tax the increase in value of the property over the last twenty years, at most.

We also require short-term foster homes, teaching the young to interact with people or to bring an ill cat to full health. If you can help, please contact us on one of the numbers above.

However, the minutae of the law on local taxes encourages the town halls to in fact tax the increase in value that the property might expect in the twenty years following the financial transaction, as pointed out recently by Antonio Escribano, who lives in Cuenca, who has recently won the point at the High Court of Justice of Castilla-La-Mancha, in a final judgment. This difference represents a unjustified cost to the taxpayer of around 40% on what he must pay the local administration. For an apartment whose value in 2012 is 100,000 euros, has been owned for 20 years and is sold in 2012, the average savings is around 6,000 euros. In Sr. Escribano's case, the Town Hall of Cuenca was instructed to return 18,000 euros. This setback for municipal coffers can be extended to other municipalities, which calculate this tax figure in the same way. Around 1,600 million euros will have been collected in excess by councils across the country and that amount, coupled with interest and the appropriate legal costs, would have to return these municipalities together with the corresponding legal costs mean that we could be talking about a total liability of 2,000 million euros. Which leaves us with the questions: will justice be applied, will the authorities help in protecting the general public interest or will capital gains tax rise to compensate for the mathematical calculations?

CAT OF THE MONTH Pepe is a darling. He has been in foster care as he was only a tiny baby when he came to us. He is now raring to go and ready for a loving home. If you would like to adopt Pepe, or one of our other cats/kittens, please call Lynda on 648100629. For more information see our new website – aldeafelina.blogspot.com. We Need Your Help! We are always in need of people to help out at the centre. If you have a few spare hours one morning per week and would like to spend them caring for young kittens, or would be prepared to help cover for sickness and holidays at the centre please call Lynda. Donations Donations are most welcome as one-off gifts or regular payments. Lynda can provide you with the relevant information or see our new website http://aldeafelina.blogspot.com. Every little helps. We’d also like your bric-a-brac, books and unwanted gifts, to sell in our charity shop at Els Poblets, close to the (well signposted) veterinary clinic. Open Mon to Sat: 10-2.

SATELLITE KNOW HOW

Richard Pollock Consultant Electronic Engineer Wishing all the Grapevine Readers a Happy & Healthy New Year. For several Months now I have been inundated by telephone calls and e-mails all seeking information on what was the future of the U.K. Channel reception here in Spain and in particular Javea and surrounding areas. The Newspaper coverage has not always been helpful with quite a few comments way of the mark. If you wind the clock back to around February 2012 you will recollect that overnight our reception of the U.K. Channels was greatly improved, all of a sudden we could enjoy BBC1.2.3 and 4 24/7 along with a similar performance with ITV1,2,3 and 4 not forgetting Four and Five. Of course those in the Trade had seen comments regarding 2D fast coming to the end of its life, it was running low on gas and had to be parked out of Orbit of the chain of other Satellite Transponders circling the earth. The problem facing Astra/SES who own and control a large string of satellite Transponders was that the designated replacement for 2D had hit problems at launch and suffered irreparable damage. However Astra/SES had successfully launched another Satellite Transponder 1N, it was designed for use covering to a great degree the whole of Europe including the U.K. from a platform at 19’2 degree SSE. The short answer was to draft in 1N to take over in place of 2D, of course the U.K. viewer would never notice the difference............ however the European viewer certainly did “In the words of Harold Wilson....You’ve never had it so good” Here in Javea and surrounding districts from requiring 2.4 metre Satellite Dishes in order to view, we could now receive a range of stations on a one metre Satellite Dish and for many people who were suffering from the fact that they could not accommodate a large 2.4 metre Satellite Dish or simply did not wish to spend over a thousand Euros or so, then the simple answer was to have a small one metre Satellite Dish installed along with a suitable Satellite Receiver. In the Trade we knew that this had to be a temporary cure until the launch of a suitable replacement, this has now turned out to be the launch of two 2E and 2F. now in ‘Orbit’ and at the moment Astra/SES 2F is now Transmitting three stations, they are as follows BBC1 H.D. Four and Five. For those wishing to check out my findings, please have a look on Googlehttp:/www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/aboutthebbc/posts/Chang es-to-BBC-Satellite-Transponders-in-2013 To complete our findings would be to set up Test Equipment to the three stations known to be transmitted by the Astra/SES Satellite Transponder, we also had found out that the ‘Footprints’ of 2E and 2F would be even more so targeted onto the U.K. and Northern Ireland and that the spillage into Europe would be even more attenuated than Astra/SES 2D. Examination of 2E & 2F footprints were of a very simi-

lar pattern and we had no option but to take this as our Guide! We then did a comparison of the readings obtained from our Satellite Dish Farm using a 2.4 metre Satellite Dish, a one metre Satellite Dish and a new 1.4 metre Satellite Dish ( Note all Satellite Dishes were from the Famaval range!) all had the best LNBs to match their Head End Fitting and all cable was Webber 100/CT100 in other words a very high quality low loss cable and all of similar lengths. Listed below are the readings we obtained. Astra/SES 1N Sky News 12207V BBC W/Mid 10788V BBC1 H.D. 10847V ITV C/I 10906V ITV Central 11053H Sky Sports 12148H Sky Classic 11836H

2.4 metre 11.6dB 1.0E6 9.6dB 1.0E6 8.9dB 1.5E 7.4dB 1.6E6 7.4dB 2.0E6 3.3dB 9.2E3 2.6dB 1.7E2

1.4 metre 10.8dB 1.0E6 4.6dB 4.3E4 32.8dB 6.9E3 5.5dB 1.1E4 4.1dB 9.4E4 0.3dB 7.3E2

0.3dB 1.0E1 1.9dB 9.1E3 1.0dB 1.9E2

Note the Higher the dB (Decibel) reading the stronger the signal at the same time the BER (Bit Error Reading ) works in reverse of this e.g. using BBC1 H.D. on 1N 9.6dB is much stronger than BBC1 H.D. 2F 6.2dB and again BBC1 H.D. 1N 1.5E3 means the errors in transmission are much less than those on BBC1 H.D. 2F at 1.4E2 If you study these readings you will see that a 1.4 metre Satellite Dish as expected out performs the 1.0 metre Satellite Dish and this would indicate that in adverse weather conditions the 1.0 metre type would be the first to lose signals and of course as expected the 2.4 metre type out performs them all. If a viewer is happy viewing the U.K. Stations then the best bet would be to consider the 1.4 metre Satellite Dish it will also provide quite a few Stations being transmitted from Astra/SES 2A and 2B plus of course some input from Eutelsat (Formerly Eurobird). Its worth remembering that some very popular Stations transmitted from Astra/SES 2A and 2B are split into North and South Beams, we are in the Southern side and so Sky Sports 1,2 and 3 are much stronger than for instance Sky Classics etc on the Northern Beam, again the 2.4 metre Satellite Dish copes better with these signals. It should also be noted that later this year it is the intension of Sky to use the Asta/SES Satellite Transponder 2F European Beam,we hope this will provide a more uniform spread of signals for viewers in this area of Spain. My colleague Peter who made tests towards Calpe had already noticed that on a 1.00 metre Satellite Dish problems with the reception of Five can be solved by an upgrade to a 1.4 metre Satellite Dish and of course already we are hearing from our Cousins based much further South that they are unable to received signals from Astra/SES 2F at all using 2.4 metre Satellite Dishes, looks like we are for once much better placed!!! I have also included a few stations that were not required for the Test, however I thought it best to include them as on close examination you can see quite a wide spread in the readings, this would not be the case were these tests completed in the U.K. The answer is quite simple the signals aimed at best performance in the U.K. are balanced in such a manner that coverage over the U.K. is spread in quite an equal manner thus guaranteeing quality of reception of all intended channels. Out of continued on next page

THE GRAPEVINE, January 2013

the U.K. we are in the main operating on the ‘Spillage’ and thus if you like the rise and fall in signal strength of received signals and of course as in most cases they are weaker then they will be affected by ‘Rain in Space’ and also local rain of various degrees intensity. Finally I should mention the number of times Peter, Geoff and I have been called in to examine recently installed systems, often still under guarantee, where the Client is not satisfied with the results and although a re-call and test have been made the system still does not perform as expected, This can be very upsetting, the Client in discussion with a neighbour with a near identical system finds the neighbour has a better range of programmes! More often than not we find the cure is simply in the detail, not enough attention has been taken in completing the adjustments, these consist of a very careful alignment of the Satellite Dish in both Horizontal and Vertical mode, after this especially on the larger Satellite Dishes it may be possible to improve performance by tuning the Satellite Dish Face Plate (if it is severely damaged then it must be replaced!) finally great attention must be made to the setting of the LNB,first the Focal length and finally the Scew, with both these adjustments one centimetre out can result in an inferior performance. At this point you are in the hands of the Installation Engineer and if he only has very basic equipment then it is almost impossible for the work to be completed to the standard required. These days as signals are getting more complex, after all they now also carry much additional information as in the case of H.D. 3D and Multiple sound stages it is vital that suitable Test Equipment is available, we ourselves use Promax equipment these days accepted as an Industry Standard and this means a satisfactory result every time.

surprisingly well-crafted, but the fruit is not exactly grand cru. I have to make excuses for why Château Joe doesn’t meet the quality criteria to warrant a splashy column in The Globe. More frequently I find myself in the company of professionals whose juice isn’t always up to snuff. So, I keep a handy mental glossary of polite winespeak. Here’s a list, followed by phrases winemakers themselves often use to cover for their mistakes. Assertive: A wine can, indeed, have too much flavour – bad flavour. This flexible catch-all covers everything from the foxy, wet-wool character of a red made from native North American vines (hello, concord) to the nail-polish fumes of a defect known as volatile acidity. Food wine: Here’s another versatile descriptor, but it’s particularly apt for atrocities with a grip as bracing as battery acid. Nothing protects the taste buds, or tooth enamel, from oenological napalm like a hearty repast. Honourable mentions: vibrant, lively, tangy. Closed: All wine should taste of fruit. But some young reds can be so cloaked in astringent tannins that the frutiness goes AWOL. It’s not necessarily a defect, because the wine may eventually come around in the cellar. But it’s hard to predict whether that’s going to happen. In the meantime, you’re safe with, “This strikes me as a bit closed. I think it needs time.” Bold: Do you grow listless or drowsy after two sips of a syrupy shiraz, jammy zinfandel or high-alcohol New World pinot noir? You’ve just had a “bold” wine, my friend.

Toasty: Like all euphemisms, this can apply in a sincerely complimentary context, specifically with respect BEPPI CROSARIOL to good wines carrying a nuance of charred wood from I received a question recently from a reader who must barrel maturation. That’s why a lumber-loving wineremain nameless. I think you can appreciate the witness- maker would blush to hear that his or her overoaked chardonnay is “toasty.” protection imperative when you read the e-mail:

8 ways, politely, to insult your friend's wine

“Many of my friends make their own wine and I need a list of euphemistic adjectives to describe it,” he wrote. “I realize frank discussion could end the friendships (and future dinners) if I tell the truth. Criticizing your friends’ wine is like criticizing their children. Help!!!”

Layered: Complexity is the hallmark of fine wine. “Layered” is sufficiently vague to acquit you in any circumstance.

Ripe: Grapes should be ripe when harvested, so this word is flattering by definition. When grapes cross the Welcome to my life. I have neighbours who make their line, though, and develop a cloying raisin-like character, own. Joe relies on imported California grapes. Eric gets you can diplomatically omit the prefix “over” from Joe to crush a proud red from a decades-old concord- “overripe.” grape arbour that grows like something out of Jack and the Beanstalk over Eric’s back porch. Here we are again with another year gone and another one beginning. On this occasion, in the name also of the entire board, but especially in the name of all our four-legged friends, I would like to say a big thank you, for all the money and kind donations, sponsorships and member-ships and other assistance. Without your help, it would be over already a long time ago. Sometimes it seems as if we are dealing with a hopeless cause, because there seems to be no end with stray dogs . However, when we see how our protégés developing positively with us again, regaining confidence and getting a chance with a new family, we know that all our efforts have paid off and we are on the right track. But all this would not be possible without your moral and material support. We all know that Spain is in economic difficulties and the funds no longer gush. This is also noticeable with the financial situation of the municipalities. Payments due us come very slowly or not at all and an agreement with the municipality for the coming year has not even been negotiated yet. But we must go on: we owe it to our four-legged protégés. What is more rewarding than a faithful look from the eyes of a dog? We are always very happy when we have achieved improvements. New kennels, a cosy place on a cold day, good food, loving care. So please do not forget APASA, for your help is absolutely vital for our animals. We wish you a Very Happy New Year. and again, very many thanks for your support. A loving paw print of our four-legged friends and a big thank you from the board and all employees. Kindest regards Mandy Conway APASA FRISKY, female, Shelter since 04.07.2011 Sharpei, DOB 05.12.2005 – 60 cm Frisky and her brother Coke were dumped at APASA because the owner returned to Thailand. share our attention with 230 other dogs and would like to have all the cuddles for herself. Although she is gradually getting to accept her new situation, she is just unhappy here and really needs a new home as soon as possible. COKE, male, Shelter since 04.07.2011 Sharpei, DOB 05.12.2005 – 60 cm Coke and his sister Frisky were dumped at APASA because the owner returned to Thailand. How can somebody do this after 6 years?? Coke is a very friendly pedigree Sharpei. Living in the shelter is the worst thing that could have happened to him as he has a sensitive skin that gets irritated easily by the dust. He urgently needs a new home. DINI, female, Shelter since 14.06.2012 Alsatian- / Podenco Mix, DOB 15.08.2012 – 52 cm Dini and her brother Doyle were found on a private plot. Dini is a charming girl, soft and very friendly to everybody. She needs to learn how life is going and that she can trust people. Give her a chance and she will turn out to be an ideal family dog. Doyle, male, Shelter since 14.06.2012 Alsatian - / Podenco Mix, DOB 15.08.2011 – 52 cm Doyle is the brother of Dini and he resembles her very much. He is a slim boy, very friendly but he is also a little bit afraid of people. He does not like to be touched and must learn whom he can trust. Although he is improving continuously he will still need some time to get accustomed to the life in the shelter and to the many new dog friends. But when brought together with the right people, he will surely become a loving family dog.

Hi Everyone! Happy New Year to everyone! I sincerely hope you’ve all had a great season with your families and close friends and also... that you can still fit in last year’s clothes!  Well, it’s time to get going again, so let’s get back to work! On the last post we approached Microsoft’s latest Operating System and today we will continue where we left it then. We explained how to arrange and create groups with the tiles from the Metro Interface (that’s how Microsoft has named this new start screen) but, how do we add or eliminate tiles for apps that we don’t use? Well, these tasks are quite easy too: to delete tiles all you have to do is right-click on the app you no longer need to appear on this screen and click on the icon that shows on the bottom bar that appears then. To add apps to the Metro interface, right click on an empty area of the screen while you are visualizing it and click on the button that will appear at the righthand corner of your screen on the bar. This will bring up all the apps that we have installed in our computer, listed alphabetically and once we find the one we want to add, just right click on it and then on the first button on the left hand side of the bottom bar. Now that we have it on our Metro interface, we can put it wherever we decide following the steps we saw on our previous post. Now we have seen how to interact with our tiled start screen, it’s also important to

talk about its corners. Yes, the Metro’s interface screen corners also have actions associated to them, as follows: - Moving our mouse to the left top corner or taping it if we have a touch screen will show the last used app and if we drag move straight down our mouse, the list of the apps that are still running that can be accessed directly from there by clicking on them. This only happens on the Metro interface, but the following actions will also work from whatever program we are running. - Both top and bottom right hand corners have the same action associated: it reveals the Charm bar, which is a system wide bar with 5 items: Search, Share, Start, Devices and Settings. While the buttons appear from the right side, a notification panel appears from the left side displaying the Current Time, Day, Date, Internet Connection and Battery Power Status. The Search function can be used to search for anything on your computer from any applications to settings. Just open the Search app and start typing to search for any required item. The Share button allows you to view share options for the running application. Clicking the Start button takes you to the Start Screen, Device allows you to access and change the settings of Devices connected to your computer, while Settings lets you access 6 basic system preferences with an option to access more PC settings. The six basic settings are WiFi, Audio,

Page 35

Brightness, Notifications, Power, and Language. - When we move our mouse or tapping the left bottom corner of the screen a small icon with the Start screen will appear and we can easily and quickly access our Metro interface by clicking on it. No matter where you are in the system, these last two mouse or touch actions will always give you access to these universal options. For those of you who are accustomed to use keyboard shortcuts, this version of Windows maintains the former ones, but also adds a few: Win+C: Open charms Win+Q: Search charm Win+H: Share charm Win+K: Devices charm Win+I: Settings charm Win+Q: Search apps (tip: an even easier way to search apps is to just begin typing from the start screen) Win+W: Search settings Win+F: Search files Win+Z: Get to app options Win+.: Snap app to the left Win+Shift+.: Snap app to the right Ctrl+Tab: Cycle through app history Alt+F4: Close an app Win+D: Open Desktop Win+,: Peek at desktop Win+B: Back to desktop Win+X: Open system utility settings menu Win+T: Preview open windows in taskbar

Win+U: Open Ease of Access Center Ctrl+ESC: Start screen Win+Enter: Open Windows Narrator Try these combinations ou, you’ll soon see that some of them are very useful!! Well, that’s all for today! Please find our contact details on our advert in this edition; in case you have any questions or queries, we can assure a quick and professional reply. If these queries are of general benefit, we will post the reply on further editions of the Grapevine so they can be for everybody’s benefit. looking at options to reduce this latter expense.)

Why Ecuador is the World’s Best Retirement Haven By International Living Why did Ecuador top the Retirement Index? One of the key strengths that saw Ecuador surge to the top of the Retirement Index is its rock-bottom cost of living. However, prices vary from one part of the country to another. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular locations within Ecuador…and the budgets that come with them. First up is Ecuador resident and IL’s writer Suzan Haskins… Cotacachi, The Hidden Treasure—$1,166 per month

We buy our fresh produce, meat, poultry and seafood mostly at the open-air mercados in Cotacachi, Otavalo or Ibarra. We spend about $40/week there and another $40/week on staples (flour, rice, bread, cleaning products, etc.). We don’t sacrifice when it comes to food—we eat very well. We like to cook and we eat a diet of absolutely fresh foods—no prepared “convenience” items and no soft drinks. Our downfall, though, is wine and beer. We figure we spend $70/week here…yes, almost as much as our food bill! Total monthly food and alcohol expenses: $675. We like to dine out on occasion and we spend about $40/week for that, so $180/month. Occasionally we’ll rent a movie via the Internet which adds another $20/month at the most. So figure our total monthly entertainment expenses at $200. We also spend, on average, $10/month on transportation and $60/month on prescriptions.

If you’re trying to estimate how much it might cost you to live here, you can assume that you’ll spend anywhere from $150/month to $700/month to rent an apartment or Cotacachi main square house. (These figures are for the small town of Cotacachi. You’ll spend more in a metropolitan area like How much does it really cost to live in Ecuador? I’ve Cuenca or Quito. reported in the past about couples living in this country on no more than $500 or $600 per month. Although I’ve So…those couples I mentioned who are living in no reason to doubt their numbers, that seems like Ecuador on $500 to $600/month? You can see how it remarkably low-budget living to me. can be done. If we eliminated alcohol, HOA fees and prescription medications (expenses you may not have, So now that my husband and I have been living off and for example), our monthly expenses would be around on in Cotacachi for the last couple of years, I’ve put pencil $700. If we watched our food and entertainment pennies to paper to tally our own cost of living in Ecuador. just a bit, we could definitely reduce that amount to under $600. Here’s what I’ve found: Thanks to the temperate climate we have no heating or air conditioning costs and our Suzan and Dan’s Monthly Budget most expensive monthly electric bill over the last seven months was $23.05. Our highest monthly water bill was $9.24. A bottle of propane that we use for cooking and Utilities: $36 hot water costs $3. We buy one for the stove once a HOA fees: $100 month and one for hot water every six weeks for a total Food and alcohol: $675 cost of $4.50. So far, then, our highest monthly costs for Entertainment: $200 utilities: $35.79. Transportation: $10 We own our apartment outright so we don’t pay rent or Communications: $85 have any mortgage expense. But we do pay $100 per Prescriptions: $60 month for our Homeowners Association fees. And we Total: $1,166 ($38/day) 874euros (29euros/day) spend $85 per month for our cellphone service and highspeed wireless Internet. (Our association is currently http://internationalliving.com/
