Javea outlines the schedule of activities to celebrate its 400th anniversary as an independent Municipality. There will be concerts, an official ceremony, tours and the publication of a book about the boundaries conflict that led to the independence from Denia The Javea Town Hall announced the programme of activities it is preparing to mark the 400th anniversary of the granting of the "Royal Villa" title to Javea. A privilege granted by King Philip III on 2 July 1612 that permitted Javea's independence from Denia, which had also been declared a city by the monarch a few months earlier. The Councillor for Culture, Empar Bolufer, has given details of the celebrations that the Town Hall is preparing thanks to the input of individuals noted for their interest in local history and culture such as Pepa Guardiola and Antoni Espinós.

WELCOME TO YOUR

From the

EDITORS DESK We hope you all had a very Happy Easter and didn’t indulge in too much chocolate. We of course didn’t take much time off as we had to get your Grapevine out on time. We hope you enjoy our new column from Tom Miller the press officer for the U3A. We like it. Also you may have noticed that the Help Desk column is now being written by Yvonne Henry. She has taken over from Elizabeth Collins who has now retired. Thank you Elizabeth for your previous columns, enjoy your retirment. Welcome on board Yvonne. For those of you who noticed my absense from the Blue Ribbon Walk, apologies but we had to pick my son up from the airport that day. He decided to surprise me by arriving here for Mothers Day. I believe it went very well and lot’s of money was raised for a very worthy

cause. Have you been looking for the cobblers shop recently and can’t find it. That’s because it has moved location and changed the sign. You can now find it next door to The Try Again bar just a little further up the road from where it used to be. The tourists are beginning to arrive despite Britain trying to encourage the Brits to stay in the U.K. for their holiday’s. I mean come on, Scarborough in the rain or Javea in the sun? No contest I would say. Yes we know it ‘s the Queens Diamond Jubilee this year, we are also aware that the 2012 Olympics are being held there. We can watch all of that on the T.V. over here can’t we? Does anybody have any plans for a street party for the Diamond Jubilee ? If so please let us know. Could be a good fundraiser. Well that’s all from me for now. T,T.F.N. Sue.

The local archaeologist, Ximo Bolufer, has pointed out that this book is a rich and interesting document because it reflects the former toponomy (or place names) in ancient Valenciano and paints a portrait of the land, boundaries and architectural elements such as water mills that existed in the Vall de Xàbia in the seventeenth century. To complement the release of this publication, Bolufer will lead a guided tour to explore these landscapes from a historical perspective, give talks in the schools on this chapter of local history and organise an exhibition at the Soler Blasco museum. The programme of events will close with another guided tour by the architect and researcher Pep Ivars, this time within the town, to recall the town of Javea in the modern period (XVI and XVII centuries). The 400th anniversary commemorative logo was also presented and it features a drawing of the ancient walled town and its gates.

THE GRAPEVINE, April 2012

Artist of the month

Compiled by Linda McGillycuddy It can take a lifetime to achieve greatness and so most of the artists I have featured in the past have been of a certain ‘vintage’. But Adele has achieved greatness at the age of 24, broken all sorts of records and has proven that we don’t need to rely on reality TV shows or fabricated groups. True talent will not be denied, and no one can deny her talent. Adele was born in 1988 and did not come from any musical family. Her Mom was a teenage single mother and encouraged Adele to sing along to the Spice Girls, an unlikely beginning for such a unique singer/song-

writer. While attending Brixton academy, the young Adele heard the American singer songwriter Pink perform and was instantly inspired. Adele graduated from the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology in Croydon in May 2006, where she was a classmate of Leona Lewis (X Factor winner). Adele credits the school with nurturing her talent. She recorded a threesong demo for a class project and gave it to a friend] who posted it on MySpace where it became very successful and led to a phone call from music label XL Recordings. She thought the offer might be a joke and took a friend with her to the meeting. Her debut album, 19, so called because she was only 19 when she recorded it, was released in 2008 to much commercial and critical success. 19 was certified four times platinum in the UK. Her song ‘Chasing Pavements’ from this album is probably the first song that many fans would have heard. Adele released her second album, 21, in early 2011. Many songs on the album were inspired by the heartbreak she suffered from the split with her boyfriend, but

Page 5

one would imagine its enormous success helped her overcome her broken heart. The album was well received critically and surpassed the success of her debut recording. With her two albums and the first two singles from 21, "Rolling in the Deep" and "Someone Like You", Adele became the first living artist to achieve the feat of two top five hits in both the UK Official Singles Chart and the Official Albums Chart simultaneously since the Beatles in 1964. 21 is the longest running number one album by a female solo artist on the UK Albums Chart and is the longest running number one album by a female in Billboard history. The success of 21 earned Adele numerous mentions in the Guinness Book of World Records. The album has been certified 15 times platinum in the UK; in the US the album has held the top position longer than any other album since 1985. She is the first artist to sell more than 3 million copies of an album in a year in the UK. The amount of awards and records broken by Adele could fill the page. Suffice it to say, she has won them all. In October 2011, Adele was forced to cancel two tours because of a vocal cord hemorrhage. Her laser microsurgery was successful and she went on to make her live comeback at the 2012 Grammy Awards in February. She won in all six categories, equaling the record for most Grammy Awards won by a female artist in one night. Adele recently announced she will be taking a break before beginning work on her third album. Fashion designer Karl Largerfeld caused controversy when he criticised her weight, but Adele was undaunted. She is outspoken and unspoiled by her meteoric success and is respected as a unique singer and songwriter. Her critical and commercial success is unparalleled. She is a beautiful and talented woman who does not confirm to the stereotypical girls who compete in talent shows wanting only to be famous but with little real talent to offer. Adele has broken the mould created by pop moguls such as Simon Cowell and there may well be others like her out there waiting for a chance to share their music with the world.

Tickets are also available at Humpty Dumpty, Javea Park. Q. Tell me, what else is happening? ND. We have begun a new member recruitment drive and people who join during the week of One Way Pendulum will receive a welcome gift of a bottle of wine or cava. We then have a full programme for the rest of the year, a Summer production in the Casa de Cultura in Javea, together with a meal in the square outside; an Autumn Studio production that may connect with the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens; and “Calendar Girls” in November. Another initiative is the forming links with other local associations and businesses such as La Cocina restuarante, Javea Bridge Club, the Charity Shop Library and the Anglo-Spanish association. We welcome contacts with others who would like to set up mutually supportive arrangements of any kind, by contacting me through our website, www.javeaplayers.com.

ND. Yes. First we are delighted that we have new sponsors, Blacktower Financial Management Limited, and they are helping us to reintroduce our gala nights. Next, we have just finished performing The Ancient Mariner in our Studio theatre in Javea, which we also took to Careline’s theatre in Alcalali, and the newspaper reviews and comments from the audience were very complimentary so we were delighted. We have also revamped our website, www.javeaplayers.com, which is proving to be quite popular judging by the large num- Thanks, Norman, it leaves me quite breathless just talking about all the things Javea Players are doing. ber of hits. The agreement signed between the municipality and the contractor includes improvements in material and number of hours, as well as services such as beach campaigns aimed at promoting health, and leisure activities for seniors and children. Attention has also been guaranteed for special-needs users requiring assistance with bathing or those at risk of becoming lost or disoriented. NEWS fromAGENDA 21 JÁVEA \ XÁBIA

THE GRAPEVINE April 2012

Agenda 21 is a non-political process whereby inhabitants of a town can have a say in the long-term sustainable development of their community. Jávea has been part of this UN initiative since 2004, but as proceedings are mostly conducted in either Castellano and Valenciano, the authors decided that as more than half the population of Jávea consists of expatriates, it would be useful to set up a Wiki website to disseminate information in English. This column is a summary of recent events. For more information and up-to-date news, please visit; http//agenda21-xabia.wikidot.com

Compiled by Chris Betterton-Jones and Tim Ladd Tourist information booth for the Arenal The Town Hall has revealed the design of a new Tourist Information booth which will be installed near the first clump of palm trees at the Arenal. It has a modern, original design with space for two people, and closed at night with a "see through" window, so people can see inside. The cost is around €20,000, twice as much they had hoped to spend on hiring one, but since it has been difficult to arrange to employ extra staff for the booth, they decided to invest in the structure, which can be relocated in winter months. It will be manned by staff from the Arenal Tourism office, which in turn, will only be open on the busiest "changeover" days. Spain drought depletes reservoirs for hydropower and farms The continuation of Spain's long-running drought further cut the major gas- and grain-importing country's capacity to generate hydropower and irrigate crops in the past week, official data showed on Tuesday. The three months to February were the driest since the Met office began compiling comparable records in 1947, which has drained hydropower reservoirs and forced up wholesale power prices. Scarcity of hydropower makes Spain more dependent on gas-fired generators and drives up imports by what is typically the world's eighth-biggest natural gas importer. It is also the fourthlargest importer of liquefied natural gas.

fires are not permitted within 500m of the forest, and urged not to start fires or let off fireworks in risky areas. Improved beach services for 2012 The Javea Town Hall has issued an invitation to tender for several of the seasonal service on the beaches that have been deserted since 2010, such as the sunbeds and umbrella services on the beaches of La Grava, Benissero or First Montañar and half of the Arenal beach. The Town Hall is very interested in making these services available, for which it has lowered the price of the initial tender established in 2010. In addition, the Department of Environment and Beaches under the direction of Doris Courcelles proposes a new nautical concession in the form of a kayak rental service on the Granadella beach.

Xàbia has a cash surplus of €3.5 million Jávea's municipal accounts are healthy with a cash surplus of some €3.5 million Euros. This means that the town can settle the 91 bills outstanding to suppliers at the end of March, totalling some €1,753,720. They will also be able to implement the proposal for a bus station, costing some €150,000 This proposal was selected by the citizen's forum of Agenda21 by public vote. Despite this surplus, the town still owes some €14 million, most of which (12.1 million) is a loan to pay for the underground car parks. The rest are hangovers from other earlier capital projects. These debts will be gradually amortised. The Spain: "Don't cut while green" to ensure best fruit cash surplus for 2012 is expected to be €6 million. I believe the reopening of this beautiful building is vital to reviving the Old Town. It must be Easter in the Costa Blanca because it is raining. Despite the fact that Easter weekend moves around the calendar you can be sure that at some point during the holiday week it will bucket down. The upside is that we have the consolation that in a few days it will be warm and sunny – guaranteed. One other aspect of life in Spain that is equally certain is the generous spirit of the Bay Radio audience and their incredible sense of fun. So it is with this knowledge that I am happy to draw your attention to the Bay Radio BE NICE DAY which happens on May 6th. As the major and most popular English Language radio station in Spain our team have a strong sense of responsibility and we even have a lovely lady dedicated to coordinating all our charity events. Her name is Magpie and it was she who created the concept of this special day. So with Magpie driving us all forward we have invited various charities, private companies, Golf Societies and individuals to perform some events on that day that will raise funds. The underlying theme is to have fun doing so and so I am assured that there will be numerous weird and wacky activities. The Bay Radio network has already committed to working with several charities in our area and we will be holding 5km sponsored walks between Valencia and Mojacar, but we want more charities to get involved and need your help! No matter how big or small, if you know or work for a charity that wants get involved please email charity@bayradio.fm. In short, we aim to ensure that there is a load of FUN in fundraising. One final word in appreciation of our mate Campbell Lamont. He is universally acknowledged by everyone, other than one or two envious of his success, as the champion of the golfer in Spain and having created an environment which provides guaranteed revenue for the golf courses and affordable green fees for the players he has now diversified into entertainment and is responsible for the welcome presence of SIMPLE MINDS here in the Costa Blanca. Whilst others moan and complain he makes great strides in making life in Spain more enjoyable for everyone. Well done, Mate!!! And there is more to come – watch this space .

with John Migan Hi again all, I hope all is well. We have unfortunately experienced some interference problems with our Javea frequency recently so are continuing with our work to upgrade the Javea signal. This work will continue until we are 100% satisfied with the signal and coverage, so again I thank you for bearing with us and keep checking our weekly full page Ad in the EWN for any new frequency details. Spectrum FM is registered as a National Cultural Association in Spain, where we assume responsibility to inform our listeners on how to integrate more easily in Spain by offering daily information on Spanish law, national and local holidays, national and local events, basically anything that helps our listeners. We also encourage any local charities or groups to send us any local event information which we will put on air (without charge), so if we can help you and your charity or group please feel free to send details to the email address at the bottom of this page. We had great fun at this year’s ‘Zumbathon’ on Javea beach (March 31st) and would like to thank Kimberley for all of her hard work arranging the event and raising over 1,700€ for her chosen charity ‘APASA,’ as always a great job done by Kimberley (www.zumbacostablanca.com) so on behalf of everyone: a BIG thank you! I am really looking forward to the ex-Simple Minds concert at the Denia Marriot on the 13th and 14th April where we will be providing the music for the after show party, real rock legends of the 80’s that really have: ‘been there and done that’ gracing us with their presence with their only Spanish gigs, a night not to be missed! Sing together: la la la la, la la la la, la la la la la la la la la la, la la la la (Don’t you forget about me, remember that!?) I can feel a karaoke night coming on beforehand!  Easter in Javea really is a great and exciting time, even though the weather over the last few years has tried its best to spoil the party, the ‘buzz’ around Javea with all the shops, restaurants and bars open for the start of summer, the beautiful old town and the beach fronts all busy and full of family life, the night markets open, just great, I love our beautiful town! That’s me again for this month; I am off to eat another Easter egg! As always many thanks for listening and feel free to email me with any views, comments or events:

WHY DO WE NEED ANIMALS IN OUR LIVES Have you ever thought why we surround ourselves with animals? Why we get so attached to them and even look after them better than ourselves or our children? Why we are so attracted to them? Animals express unconditional love, they allow us to express our feelings without feeling judged and feeling ridiculous. Because they are loyal, forgive, joyous, always loving they make us feel safe when expressing our feelings. But we must be careful not to push our emotional emptiness or issues on to our animals as in the long run this can cause problems in our relationship with them and in our pet. A lot of the time we have high expectations of our pets and when these aren’t reached, we can get extremely cross or annoyed with them. Normally, these expectations are really our own internal emotional needs that have not been dealt with by us. We can also influence negatively our animal’s behaviour and condition them by the way we express our emotions and feelings. For instance a person who is a very “needy “ person will express this neediness to their pet ( for example a dog) and the

Animals play such an important part in our lives. They give us love, friendship, happiness, they are always willing to please and always forgive us...we have so much to learn from them, in fact we have much more to learn from animals than animals from us, if only we could be more humble and see this. Animals continuously demonstrate compassion, whether be a dog, cat, cow, chicken, elephant, dolphin, bird... We have all heard of, and seen images of animals looking after each other, cuddling up together, defending one another and not necessarily animals of the same species. Animals are natural healers, they come to our side when we are feeling down and offer support, warmth and love. Many animals are Therapists as a profession; dogs, horses or dolphins work together with specialised trained people to help children and adults with Down syndrome, autism, spinal injuries, depression, addictions, traumas, with the elderly, people in hospital etc. Their connection with the person in need of help is so deep that the specialised trainer is really Fleur (Flor) Conway: only there to offer support andHolistic Therapist Animals help. The true healing work is and Humans done by the animal itself. Bach Flower Registered Practitioner col. 3557

WINE Hospital RACK with Sweet Wine? That’s Really Rich, That One! It’s all rot, anyway! Well, it looks mouldy and it truly is mould . I mean that grey mould stuff you see on plants. Not enough sunlight or ventilation or just too damp? Best to chuck it right away before it spreads around the place. Better luck next year, we hope. Was it the Marquis himself or his vintner or a friend who thought they might just give it a try? After all, when you just washed off the mould, Botritis Cyneria, the grapes themselves, though somewhat shriveled, were really did taste sweet. Good enough to make some wine perhaps, even if not as much as usual. After all, the Marquis could get by very nicely, anyway. Just ferment it and cask up what little we have, and see how it comes out later? I wonder if that is how the Saluces gates were first opened on one of the world’s finest and expensive white wines? Back in the 1980s, with some wine scouts from Finland, in Bordeaux in early-ish October, we went to the vineyard just as the vintage harvesting was in progress. Small boxes of grapes were being loaded onto a tractortrailer, headed for the winery, grey dust hung like smoke in the still air, quite extraordinary! In anticipation (and being well prepared) this specialist-scouting group had already a couple of bottles of Chateau d’Yquem put by for a later occasion. Although I do seem to recall it was actually a year or two later that we tried their ‘Yquem, with a dish of their own choosing, thinly sliced smoked salmon with fresh

strawberries. This was in Thornbury Castle, outside Bristol (we did chose the campsites carefully too). Of course the Marquis de Lur Saluces obviously would not have been with us, but we felt we were doing justice to ‘his ‘noble rot’-or ‘pourriture noble’. Yes, those were the days. About twenty years before, I had worked with what was then claimed to be the longest wine list in the world, in Harvey’s restaurant in Bristol. There was Ch. D’Yquem and other treasures on that list too, but also some ‘Trockenbeerenauslese’— the German equivalent of top sauternes, in terms its mould, richness, keeping qualities and price. Luckily for me, a fairly regular millionaire patron was rather fond of these ‘Trocks’. As an eager young enthusiast, on decidedly limited resources, this particular patron (J.J.) was generous enough to offer me the chance to sip one or two of these comparative rarities, when these were being served towards the end of dinner; for which wine experience I remain most truly grateful! Even around here, one can be offered a free glass of mistela to end your evening meal when out and about. Although Moscatel may be quite at the other end of the sweet wine league table, (and we may be likewise somewhat less impoverished or less eager?) nonetheless, Mistela is certainly far from being mouldy. After all, it’s the gesture that Counts! PS For free impartial advice on Yquem, just look it up on Wiki. The Yquem story since the 1980s is even more remarkable…

Tonsils v Circumcision

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS

Two little kids are in a hospital, lying on stretchers next to each other outside the operating room, the first surgeries of the day. The first kid leans over and asks, "What are you in here for?"

Today, the Royal Navy intercepted three boatloads of people off the northern coast of France. This placed the Royal Navy in an awkward position as the boats were heading towards France.

The second kid says, "I'm getting my tonsils out, and I'm afraid." The first kid says, "You've got nothing to worry about. I had that done when I was four. They put you to sleep, and when you wake up they give you lots of Jell-O and ice cream. It's a breeze." The second kid then asks, "What are you here for?" The first kid "Circumcision."

says,

"Whoa!" the second kid replies, "Good luck, buddy. I had that done when I was born. I couldn't walk for a year."

Another surprise finding was that they were loaded with British citizens who were all seniors of pensionable age. Their claim was that they were trying to get to France so as to be able to return to Britain as illegal immigrants and therefore be entitled to far more benefits than they were receiving as legitimate British pensioners. The Royal Navy, it is believed, gave them food, water and fuel and assisted them on their journey southward. We are booking the next boat now, let me know if you know anyone who wants to come too.

SMOKED HADDOCK LASAGNE Ingredients

This delicious dish was enjoyed by my husband and me at Christmas as a starter. I have expanded the quantity of the ingredients to make it into a main course.

2 large fillets of skinless smoked haddock 5 sheets of ready to use lasagne 1 x 250gm tub of Mascarpone 2tsp cornflour A little salt and pepper 30gm Parmesan cheese finely grated

Method Poach the fish very gently in a little water until just flaky. Do not overcook. Remove the fish onto a plate. Measure 500cl of the poaching liquid into a saucepan and thicken slightly with the cornflour. Bring to the boil and remove from the heat. Now whisk the Mascarpone into the liquid until smooth. Add salt and pepper to taste. Put a little of the sauce into an ovenproof dish or tin. (I used a bread tin as it was just the right size. If you do not have a suitable dish it is possible to buy a packet of foil take-away type dishes). Put a sheet of lasagne on next, then some flaked fish followed by some more sauce. Continue building up the layers like this, finishing with a layer of sauce. Sprinkle with the Parmesan and cook at 200c for 25 minutes.

EATING OUT

John

WITH

Deacon

A British eduvation of the post-war period may have done many things but it certainly did not equip John Deacon for his arrival in Paris in 1964 as an EMI trainee. The splendours of French gastronomy came at him like a bolt of lightning. His subsequent EMI postings to Bruxelles, Beirut, Athens, Amsterdam & Dubai only made the journey the more fascinating. We hope that this experience will prove the basis for a helpful guide to readers exploring Jávea and the surrounding area. Many of his friends agree with him that muzak is one of the scourges of our time which means that the worst offenders do not feature in these listings. If it bothers you, always ask to have it turned down. Visit www.pipedown.info ... and bon appetit ! follow later. The second ENGLISH TEA took place on April 5th and was another success. The next tea will be given on Thurs. May 3rd (16:30 18:00h). It is necessary to book [96 579 0200] . It appears this is set "AN INLAND TREASURE" to become a delightful and regular social event. also removed on this street and replaced with plants. Likewise, lampposts have been repaired, the promenade paper bins have been painted and several dried out palm trees have been removed from the beach. We are studying the possibility of planting more resistant varieties of trees in this area of the beach.

Excursions organized by the Tourism office:

You can find more information on www.xabia.org or in the tourism offices but you might like to see two special trips: the first one on Sunday 15th April ( starts from the new cemetery parking at 9 am.) which will take you to “LES VALLS” country side during 4 hours and the second one on Sunday 29th April ( starts from “la Plana monastery at 8am.) to discover the “”Cova Tallada”. A bit more difficult and longer – 5hours- but believe me....it is really worth it.. These excursions are free and even have a guide service.

If you prefer gardening.....

Doris Courcelles A new “mirador” in the Port area: For example, did you know that the Town Hall's Department of Environment and Services has completed an project aimed at embellishing the walkway located above the Caleta del Port, which has until now been used only by residents. The Town Hall has decided to fix up this new viewpoint to take in the scenery and the fishing activity of the Port and include it in the "ruta de los miradores". They also hope that the spruced up walkway will encourage tourists and residents to explore this vantage point over the sea, which is connected to two recently cleared paths that lead back down to the Port The project include cleaning, painting, rebuilding damaged walls and installation of a wooden fence along the entire length of the walkway. In addition, five benches and various waste paper bins have been installed.

Keep an eye on your palm trees!!!!! The department in charge of parks and gardens is still informing gardeners, landscaping professionals and residents in order to face the red palm weevil plague. After the winter, furthermore measures and protocols will be planned before the expected increase of the Weevil in April and May. This is a serious environmental problem and we need your help. If you think that this insect has attacked one of your trees or the neighbour's, don't hesitate to call the Town Hall – 96 579 05 00 extension 1200, 1308 or 1310. We will send an inspector who would confirm the plague and would give you good advices to treat the affected tree.

Tarmac operation in the Montgo area:

If you live in this area, let me tell you that public works will be postponed until Tuesday, April 10th to avoid inconveniences to neighbours and visitors during the holiday period. The resurfacing works, which have already improved the road surfaces in Balcon al Mar and the Port, will resume after the San Vicente holiday and will focus on the Carretera del Pla and several streets in the Montgo urbanisations, which are currently being cleared in preparation for the works.

Therefore, after Easter two-way traffic will be restored to the part of the Carretera del Pla that was adapted for the bike lane, and several streets in the Montgó area will be resurfaced. The works will take place on the following streets: Auriga, Cuenca, La Ermita, Fénix, India, Leo, Montemayor, Rutilus and Improvements on the Arenal: Vedat. Doris Courcelles, councillor for “services, environment and beaches” was born in Belgium and studied at a French university. She speaks Castellano, English, French, Dutch, and German and is still trying to improve her Valenciano. As a consequence, she knows many residents and societies of Spanish and other nationalities here in Jávea. She moved to Spain in 1978. She has a son aged 29 and can empathise with parents in a foreign country.

Just how mean can they get? There are the same hours of light and darkness whatever the clocks may say. ‘Saving’ an hour by the clock at one end of the day just means you will ‘lose’ it by the clock at the other end, naturally enough. Here in Javea we are east of the deciding Greenwich meridian, while most of Spain lies to its west. No matter on which side of the line one may be, in terms of actual hours, light and dark will be the same, only variations determined by latitude rather than longitude. So why do some parts of the world, like us in Europe (no, not all parts!) still think it a good idea to change this twice a year. Even the timing of that change is not logical, with the change of hour coming about eight weeks before the winter solstice, while the change back again, as we had in March, then coming about 12 weeks after the solstice. That’s quite enough inequality to make any druid throw up their arms in despair. What …rearrange

But, hang on, come to think of it again; with so much else they are trying to bring up to date around here, WHY NOT?

Starting Times One thing leads to another, which is why the start times for many evening events in Javea are often at an inaccessibly late hour; 9pm to 10pm would be typical. This inaccessibility applies to those seniors among us that would need to drive into town first and return home after midnight. For some of us, this is just not on! So ‘squeezing’ the siesta hour would encourage more diversified participation and thus integration. I hope that rings one or two bells. It’s about time it did.

The evening started out in the traditional sedate tea dance style with waltz’s, quick steps and fox trots and gradually progressed to line dancing, rock and roll and even a performance, by two of the more extrovert, and energetic, dancers, of the of the Rolling Stones, “Jumping Jack Flash” The evening was a great success and everyone went home having thoroughly enjoyed themselves and looking forward to future Javea U3A events filled with fun and surprises. PARAPROSDOKIANS Here is the definition: "Figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected; frequently used in a humorous situation." (Winston Churchill loved them!) "Where there's a will, I want to be in it" is a type of paraprosdokian. Here are more: 1. Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. 2. The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it's still on my list. 3. Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak. 4. If I agreed with you, we'd both be wrong. 5. We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public. 6. War does not determine who is right - only who is left. 7. Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad. 8. Evening news is where they begin with 'Good Evening,' and then proceed to tell you why it isn't. 9. To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research. 10. A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where

a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station. 11. I thought I wanted a career. Turns out I just wanted paychecks. 12. Whenever I fill out an application, in the part that says, 'In case of emergency, notify:' I put 'DOCTOR.' 13. I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you. 14. Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are sexy. 15. Behind every successful man is his woman (and an astonished mother-in-law). Behind the fall of a successful man is usually another woman. 16. A clear conscience is the sign of a fuzzy memory. 17. You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice. 18. Money can't buy happiness, but it sure makes misery easier to live with. 19. There's a fine line between cuddling and holding someone down so they can't get away. 20. I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure. 21. You're never too old to learn something stupid. 22. To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target. 23. Nostalgia isn't what it used to be. 24. Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine. 25. Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.

Craft Corner Treasured Memories Scrapbooking is an enjoyable hobby that can be shared by all and that showcases all of the numerous photographs that we all take. Usually they either sit in a box, or on a shelf gathering dust, while some may never even be printed, remaining on your camera or laptop to not be seen or enjoyed by you and others. We often have good intentions of putting these photographs into a photo album, but a photo album just shows you the photos. Scrapbooking tells a story; it can contain photos, mementos and notes about the event, sometimes known as journaling, to help bring your memories to life. Why not take the opportunity to start a new hobby and preserve your photos for yourself and for future generations, while also providing hours of enjoyment for yourself.

LIVING WILL FORM I, ____________, being of sound mind and body, do not wish to be kept alive indefinitely by artificial means. Under no circumstances should my fate be put in the hands of pinhead partisan politicians who couldn't pass ninth-grade biology if their lives depended on it, or lawyers/doctors/hospitals interested in simply running up the bills.

If a reasonable amount of time passes, and I fail to ask for at least one of the following: Vodka Rocks, a Margarita, a Scotch, a Bloody Mary, a Gin and Tonic, a Tee Time, a Steak, Lobster or crab legs, the remote control, a bowl of ice You will first need to select your photos based on a theme or cream, the sports page, Sex or Chocolate, it should event. Some examples could be a special birthday, a holiday be presumed that I won't ever get any better. or even an everyday event that you want to remember. Think of each page as having a story to tell.

The first decision you will need to make is which scrapbook album is right for you. They come in a variety of sizes and colours, 12 x 12 and 8 x 8 being the most common, although you can also find chipboard scrapbooks in fun shapes that can compliment your photos. A traditional scrapbook album contains plastic page covers that are acid free which help to preserve your treasured memories. Inside these covers your photos can be displayed on background papers. Scrapbooking papers come in a variety of patterns, colours and themes that will enhance your photos and help to tell your story. For instance you may have been on a cruise recently; you could then use a background with an ocean cruise theme to display your photos. To help you mount your photos with ease and precision you can use either glue or adhesive tape. Once your photos are mounted on the backing paper you can then embellish them to compliment the subject of your photos. Embellishments can come in the form of stickers, flowers, gems, ribbon, lace and brads. These craft embellishments add depth, colour and creativity to your pages and projects. You can then add journaling to add details about the photos so that you can preserve their story for years to come. At Fiesta Crafts in Javea you can everything you need to begin scrapbooking and other crafts, as well as advice and help. We have recently moved to bigger premises where we have a much wider variety of stock. We will also be holding craft social afternoons, special workshop events and scrapbook crops.

You can now find us at Local 22, Moreras del Saladar, Avinguda del Pla, Ctra Cabo La Nao, Javea, between Yorkshire Linen and the Lancashire Bruja. Telephone 966461788, info@fiestacrafts.eu www.fiestacrafts.eu

Finding Javea on Facebook

THE GRAPEVINE, April 2012

Page 24

I went to a business seminar in Torrevieja last month and was delighted to find a definite buzz in the air. Although many businesses are working longer hours than this time last year, they are starting to make sales. Just as in Jávea, they are trying new lines and are being innovative in re-inventing their product and service presentations. A key tool was the increase in the use of social media – so I looked on Facebook to see how much information I could find out about local services through local Groups. An astonishing number of Jávea businesses are contactable through Facebook pages and groups, or simply registered as users. Some restaurants post their weekend specials into various local groups. This is certainly not a phenomena restricted to the British. There are people and businesses of all nationalities and types. Jávea Connect has over a thousand subscribers. Our mayor, Oscar Anton, has a presence with over 1,200 contacts. The National Parties have Facebook pages. Partido Popular has over 50,000 people following it through their Madrid pages on Facebook, at a local level PSOE has nearly 5,000 ‘friends’. Jávea Conservatives Abroad have also just started a Facebook group to discuss local events and UK politics. Bay Radio has nearly 2,100 friends locally. Cines Xabia has over 3000 followers and the Rodat Spa is just behind them on 2,800. The Parador also has a healthy local following. There is something quite comfortingly familiar about the various businesses and departments one meets online. From Tourist Info, to our Marina Alta Business Club Group to nightclubs and bars – there is definitely something for everyone online and, if you look,

you will find online in Jávea, an astonishing number of people you know. Of course the main topic of conversation this week, in the real world off the internet has been the budget and its impact, locally. In a country with over 20% unemployed the opportunities for agitation offered by such a belt-tightening budget were worrying. Yet despite the strike and protests before the budget took place, there seems to have been a muted reaction since it was announced. Some of the cuts were beyond punitive; for example – a fund to help immigrants get accustomed to Spanish society last year had €67 million allocated to it, nationally: this year, zero. It is something of a relief that Jávea has been able to recoup some of the deficit over the past year and that it is actively seeking ways to help the unemployed and to generate more business in the town. However, both the UK and Spanish budget will have an impact here so we need to support our local stores, service providers and businesses as much as we can. It is the old story of the local shop all over again – if we don’t support local restaurants and shops now, they won’t be there later. To have come this far through the recession, to be on the brink of growth, it would be an irony if, at the last hurdle, we locals took what little money we have left, out of Jávea. THE "ROUNDABOUT" CHARITY SHOP SUPPORTS "ECMOR" The Volunteeers at the Roundabout Charity Shop in Avda Los Fueros in the Port at Javea have raised funds for various charities since the 1970´s. Their registered name is "Union Benefica Carrusel de Javea". Every year at their A.G.M. they decide to which charities they would like to donate their funds. In 2010 it was to the La Pedrera Hospital in Denia and previously the Day Care Centre in the Javea convent. Having read and heard about the new project at Denia Hospital, La Xara, they decided to donate some of the funds raised in 2011 to this worthwhile cause. with Dr Christoph Semler

Dr. Christoph Semler qualified as a doctor at the University of Frankfurt and then specialised in General Practice in the UK. He is a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners, holds a Diploma from the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, a Diploma in Child Health Surveillance. He opened his private practice in Jávea in 2001. Dr Semler is fluent in English, Spanish and French and has a working knowledge of Dutch. Dear doctor, please give me some advice on losing weight. I am particularly interested in the Atkins diet, having done it more than 10years ago and lost a fair amount of weight. Now I am 48 years of age and need to lose more than 20kg to get close to my ideal weight. I am also taking medication for my blood pressure, it is called amlodipino 10mg. Otherwise I am fit, no further health issues. In my family they tend to become large with age and both my parents have diabetes now. I would like toavoid getting there. I value your personal view on the Atkins diet. Dear Alan, my view in one short sentence: go for it! The Atkins diet works really well and is by far not as bad for your body as it might look at first view. In fact it is surprisingly good for you. I do not need to recount all the details of the diet as you say you have got his book at home. But looking at

the concept of it for the first time of course makes you think how this overload of supposedly badfor–your-health food can be used to a good effect. Everbody says you should eat less red meat and as little fat as possible and along comes the champoin of the low carb diets and tells you just the opposit. How can that be, when all that meat and cheese are surly only waiting to bring you cholesterol and fatty acids up? It can be, the diet delivers and it does not cause cholesterol or fatty acids to raise at all in your blood. The Atkins diet, together with other low carb diets and completely different diets, has been tested on numerous occasions with long-term follow up studies and the result for the low carb diets has always been the same: first, people lose weight quickly and continuously. Secondly their blood readings remain good or get even better throughout the course of the diet. That

goes heavily against the grain of all common medical dietary and plain sensible eating advice but is nevertheless proven and published in well repected medical journals. There is certainly a discrepancy between what we belief is healthy eating on the one side and the low carb diets on the other. We are told to keep a healthy balance in choosing our daily foodstuff which notoriously includes carbohydrates, fruit, vegetables and nuts and disuades heavily from consuming too much or only meat and fatty food like cheese. And then you have somebody telling you that the safe road to weight loss is paved with roasts, steaks and cheddar cheese. Can´t be right can it? Indeed it can, and even more so, it is right. It has been proven, and you have seen it work on yourself. The fact that you take medication for hypertension does not make any difference to taking up this diet, on the contrarry: you might even lose so much weight that you do not need this medicaton any longer. You also mention diabtes: nothing is more likely to prevent you from getting diabetes than being of normal weight, now and forever. Of course, the low carb diets are imbalanced, there are no fruit and vegetables at the beginning. So what, you want to lose weight, not keep a balance. It is certainly advisable to take the viatmin supple-

ments as mentioned in the books. Also it is likely that constipation will bother you, after all you will consume hardly any fiber. Take some laxative, drink plenty of water. The diet has several phases. In the end you sould have found your own individual optimal amount of carbohydrates you need to keep your body moving without putting too much or any weight on again. That really is the longterm aim of this diet: after you have lost weight in the first stages you are meant to find the critical amount of carbohydrates for yourself to keep this new weight level. The gain to your health through losing weight by far outweighs any of the unpleasant temporary side effects of the Atkins diet. The fact that it appears so contrary to all what we hear and read does not render it useless, silly or even dangerous. It works and it will work for you.

SATELLITE KNOW HOW

Richard Pollock Consultant Electronic Engineer BBC1, 2, 3, 4 ITV 1.2.3.4 etc all on a One Metre Satellite Dish! How long will it last ? I have had lots of e-mails and telephone calls from people very confused over the present state of reception of BBC and ITV etc as suddenly signals have greatly improved, from one Metre Satellite Dishes to the 2.4 Metre types and the main question has been, will it last ? The truth is that at the moment no one knows for sure the expected size of the Footprint after SES/Astra 1N is returned to its designed position at 19.2 degrees South, South.East and SES/Astra 2E and 2F take over on 28.2 degrees SSE (South.South,East.) SES/Astra 2D has now been shut down and in due course, now retired, will be removed to the Graveyard ! When SES Astra put 2D into space they did have problems in the North of Scotland and on the West side of Northern Ireland as the ’Spot Beam’ was too tight and hence the cut off level resulting in many complaints in these areas. The cure was to expand the Spot Beam to give the required coverage according to Contracts, the result was the Spillage fell across Europe at various levels of uneven pockets, I and others quickly found that with a selection of quality products e.g Larger Quality Satellite Dishes, Low Noise Blocks (LNB’s) Coaxial Cable (CT100 or equivalent) and of course Satellite receivers with high specification front ends we could provide the Client with 24/7 entertainment of BBC1, ITV etc. I am fully aware that The BBC, ITV and others have contract obligations based on the ‘Intellectual Properties’ demands (check this out on Google!) that most if not all transmissions are only intended for reception in the U.K. and Northern Ireland and that they must make every

attempt to follow these at all times. Owing to 2D now ending its useful life and the fact that the replacement hit major problems on launch they have had no alternative but to use the facilities of SES/Astra 1N, however when SES/Astra launch 2E, 2F and 2G around late 2012 or 2013/14 things may change. I cannot forecast the future, however at the moment I have not heard of any technique that can improve the Spot Beam to make it even tighter again, without them experiencing the same problems encountered before! Should that be the case we can expect a huge outcry from Brits living in Europe of how unfair this would be when compared with our European Cousins when they are living in the U.K. just where the Treaty of Rome stands in all this I cannot answer, only good Lawyers can grapple with that one or the Army of Barrack Room Lawyers! To sum up then, whilst there are no’ Footprints’ available for SES/Astra 2E and SES/Astra 2F as yet , SES/Astra are very aware of the requirements for the U.K. ‘Spot Beams’ for many U.K. services, including BBC and ITV etc, etc, so I would fully expect BBC and ITV etc services to return to a tighter Spot Beam in 2013/2014 !!! Apple Moves to Obtain Premier League Rights Before Steve Jobs, the visionary behind Apple, passed away in late 2011, rumours of an Apple television set were circulating through the tech world. Many predicted that the company would not move in that direction since the Apple TV boxes haven't seen exemplary sales, especially compared to gadgets like the iPod, iPad, and iPhone. However, the recently released biography of Jobs' life revealed that he had "cracked" the problem of building a TV, so shortly after his death, rumours that the company would indeed produce

a television set were now well supported. Now, the Daily Mail has revealed that Apple plans on bidding for the rights to the Premier League matches. The rights to the matches are set to go on sale at the end of the current season, May 2012. The current deal for the Premier League is worth £1.71bn, something the Apple company can well afford to pay. But why would the tech company want these rights? It is believed that buying the rights to the broadcasts are part of a plan to raise the profile and desirability of Apple TV. Though it is not clear how they plan to make the content available, as Apple TV currently doesn't offer any live television, having the rights will definitely boost the status of Apple's upcoming product in the UK and Asia. It may very well boost iPad sales as well, since there is an Apple TV App that lets iPad users stream content. The Premier League is going to have a very competitive market at the end of the season. Other bidders include Sky and ESPN, as they are the top two live football broadcasters in the UK, and Al Jezeera is also said to be interested in the bidding. This is good news for the organization and all the clubs as it means a rise in their revenues. The FA has already had to deal with a 30% drop in the price of the FA Cup. Wall-Sized TV Screens for Every Home! Last year, Sony presented the super thin OLED TV, which was essentially your typical LCD TV that uses LEDs, but much thinner than its counterparts. Now, scientists from Manchester University have announced that by the end of next year, they will be able to launch an even thinner TV screen, so thin that you can literally roll it up and put it in your pocket. Developed because of the shortage of elements needed to make LEDs, scientists have found quantum dots, new light-emitting crystals that are cheaper to produce than LEDs. Made from semi-conducting materials that emit light when energised by electricity or ultraviolet light, quantum dots are around 100,000 times smaller than the width of human hair, the dots can be put onto flexible plastic sheets and/or wallpaper to create wallsized screens. Quantum dots can be put on top of regular LEDs to produce more natural coloured light. However, the size of the crystals gives scientists the chance or option to manipulate colour by changing

the wavelength of the emission. Meaning they can produce any colour imaginable. "By altering the size of the crystals, we are able to change the colour they produce," said Professor Paul O'Brien of the University of Manchester. "It is rather like when you twang a ruler on a desk and the noise changes, the same is happening with the light produced by the quantum dots. As the colours are very bright and need little energy it has generated huge excitement in the electronics industry-the quality of display they can produce will be far superior to LCD televisions." The company working on this technology is Nanoco, a spin out company set up by the scientists from the university. According to their chief executive, Michael Edelman, the company is working with some major Asian electronics companies. Though he didn't reveal which ones, they are rumoured to be LG, Samsung, Sharp, and Sony. "The first products we are expecting to come to market using quantum dots will be the next generation of flat-screen televisions," said Edelman. "The real advantage provided by quantum dots, however, is that they can be printed on to a plastic sheet that can be rolled up. It is likely these will be small personal devices to begin with. Something else we are looking at is reels of wallpaper or curtains made out of a material that has quantum dots printed on it. You can imagine displaying scenes of the sun rising over a beach as you wake up in the morning." Apart from quantum dots, Nanoco is also working on solar powered displays for quantum dots as well as new energy efficient light bulbs.

Hi Everyone! I hope you are all succeeding reducing the spam you received with the tips provided in the last post. Just last week I had a customer that had to erase one of his email addresses as the hosting service had blocked all his accounts on it due to the hilarious number of spam emails he received on that particular account, and the size that his inbox had reached with these, at times, annoying emails!! On this edition’s post we are going to talk about a different Operating System, which most of us have heard of, but not all know what it really is and if it can be useful for us. Linux is an operating system that has become very popular over the last several years and is as much a phenomenon as it is an operating system. To understand why Linux has become so popular, it is helpful to know a little bit about its history. The first version was originally developed several decades ago and was used primarily as a research operating system in universities. Does this sound familiar? High powered desktop workstations from companies like Sun proliferated in the 1980s, and they were all based on UNIX, the predecessor of today’s Linux Operating System. Then a large number of companies entered the workstation field to compete against Sun: HP, IBM, Silicon Graphics, Apollo, etc. but unfortunately, each one had its own version of UNIX and

this made the sale of software difficult. Windows NT was Microsoft's answer to this marketplace. NT provided the same sort of features as UNIX operating systems: security, support for multiple CPUs, large-scale memory and disk management, etc., but it did it in a way that is compatible with most Windows applications. The entry of Microsoft into the high end workstation arena created a strange dynamic. The proprietary operating systems owned by separate companies and the lack of a central authority in the UNIX world weakened it, but many people have personal problems with Microsoft and this is where Linux stepped into this odd landscape, and really captured a lot of attention. The Linux kernel, which is the central part of the operating system created by Linus Torvalds in Helsinki, was made available to the world for free. Torvalds then invited others to add to the kernel providing that they would keep their contributions free. Thousands of programmers began working to enhance Linux, and the operating system grew rapidly. Because it is free and runs on PC platforms, it gained a sizeable audience among hard-core developers very quickly. This has also allowed several different versions of the Opertaing System to appear such as the popular Ubuntu, Kuki, Mint and the former Madriva and Fedora per example. These Distributions change the appearance and

function of Linux completely. They range from large, fully supported complete systems to lightweight ones that fit on a USB memory stick or run on old computers. Linux has a dedicated following and appeals to several different kinds of people: • People who already know UNIX and want to run it on PC-type hardware • People who want to experiment with operating system principles • People who need or want a great deal of control over their operating system • People who have personal problems with Microsoft In general, Linux is harder to manage than something like Windows, but offers more flexibility and configuration options and it’s a very efficient, complete, safe and fast performing system. Actually it’s the mostly used Operating System on servers and mainframe computers on which some manufacturers like HP and IBM pre-install it when they are sold. So then why is it still so unknown? Well The problem isn't Linux, as many state. Nowadays we have Ubuntu, SUSE, between others, which come with a user friendly interface therefore Linux is accessible for everyone now. Basically users just don't dare to switch to it first because we are all accustomed to Windows and Mac operating systems, second because it is a bad marketing

model, and third because software developers do not usually design their creations to run on this operating system which leaves the final user without being able to run programs they have been using for years. The Linux Institute should encourage people to try any distribution of Linux, being free and some would possibly remain using it! That’s all for this edition, log back on for more on the next issue!! THE GRAPEVINE, April 2012

ANGELA, female, Shelter since 14.02.2012 Dalmatian / Ridgeback Mix, DOB 13.01.2009 – 59 cm We are not sure, but we suspect that Angela has been kept on a chain a lot. When she was brought in, her head and neck remained down but when we let her meet other dogs, she was fine. She is a very beautiful dog and there is nothing about her that you could not love. In the meantime she has developed to be a very loving and sweet dog and we feel that she needs a new home soon. At the moment, Angela lives together with one of our most difficult dog. That alone proves what a wonderful girls she is!

NEW ISOLATION KENNELS. We are currently raising funds towards the much needed building of isolation kennels. These kennels are very necessary for new dogs arriving at the shelter so that we can monitor them for a short while for any health checks and any possible behavioural problems. These kennels are going to cost us €18,000. We would like to thank High Street Heaven Boutique, Javea for their huge support to this project. They are raising regular events at Inn on The Green and so far have raised €5000. Together with other donations we have now got €8000. The kennels have been started but there is still quite a way to go! Donations to APASA for this are welcome either at the Shelter in Cami de les Sorts Javea or to the Bank account Bancaja, Avda.Lepanto 5, E 03726, Benitachatell, Alicante. IBAN + Cuenta ES34 2077 1156 7411 0002 1039. BIC CV ALESVVXXX Please indicate "Isolation Kennels". Many Thanks GODI, male, Shelter since 20.02.2012 Poodle, DOB 15.02.2011 – 40 cm Godi was brought to APASA by his owner because he was going to work abroad. We normally do not take dogs from owners when the pound is completely full, as it was in this case,. but when we saw how frightened he was of his owner, we decided to make an exception. No dog should live in fear like he did. Godi looked horrible he was very dirty and needed grooming. In the beginning we could not even touch him, but after a week he started to eat, and trust us. Now he is not afraid anymore and a very good boy. He likes his walks and the attention he gets from the people who care for him. He really deserves a nice new kind owner.

WEINAND; male, Shelter since 03.08.2011 Podenco/Labrador Mix, DOB 15.12.2010 – 50 cm Weinand is a young and playful dog who behaves well with other dogs, and people. We do not know what had happened to him before he came to us, as he was very shy in the beginning. but we he is learning very quickly. Due to his age, he needs a lot of exercise and the best thing would be if a new owner worked with him. Weinand loves to cuddle, adores people and would love to accompany you on long walks alongside you.

SPANISH EXPLAINED

by Teacher Writer Cathy Perez Pinto CATHY: Buenos días a todo el mundo. (Good morning everybody.) ¿Qué tal las vacaciones de Pascua? (How did the Easter holidays go?) ¿Habéis ido a algún sitio interesante? (Have you been anywhere interesting?) ROSE: Personalmente me he quedado aquí, como teníamos a la familia de visita. (Personally I stayed here as we had our family visiting.) ¿Y tú? (What about you?) CATHY: Nosotros también tuvimos a la familia, pero después de la Pascua nos fuimos todos a pasar unos días en Barcelona. (We also had the family to stay but after Easter we all went to Barcelona for a few days.) Es una ciudad que ha tenido una historia fascinante y ha sido el lugar de muchos acontecimientos de importancia mundial. (It is a city which has had a fascinating history and has been the site of many events of worldwide importance.) La Revolución Industrial del siglo diecinueve cambió profundamente Barcelona y se produjo entonces una época de intenso crecimiento económico y demográfico. (In the nineteenth century the Industrial Revolution profoundly changed Barcelona and intense economic and demographic change took place.) Barcelona aumentó su superficie de manera extraordinaria. (Barcelona increased in size in an extraordinary way.) La Exposición Universal de 1888 que tuvo lugar en la ciudad supuso la consolidación del Modernismo. ( The Universal Exhibition of 1888 which took place there brought about a strengthening in its modernisation.) Otra Exposición Universal tuvo lugar en el año 1929

cuando la ciudad adquirió un nuevo protagonismo. (Another Universal Exhibition took place in 1929 and this was when the city acquired a new importance.) GEORGE: Supongo que los Juegos Olímpicos de 1992 propició un gran cambio urbanístico también. (I suppose that the Olympic Games of 1992 also brought about a great urbanistic change.) CATHY: Sí; desde luego. (Yes; of course.) Se remodeló la fachada marítima; se reformó la ciudad antigua y Montjuic e instalaron nuevas rondas de circulación. (The sea frontage was remodelled; the old part of the city, together with Motjuic, was reformed and new traffic roundabouts were installed.) También se desarrolló nuevas iniciativas culturales, como el Centro de Cultura Contemporánea y la rehabilitación del Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña; entre muchas otras cosas. ( New cultural initiatives were also developed , like the Centre for Contemporary Culture and the National Catalonian Museum of Art; among many other things.) BARBIE: Hablando de los Juegos Olímpicos de 1992; ¿cómo es la Villa Olímpica ahora? (Talking about the Olympic Games of 1992; what is the Olympic Village like now?) CATHY: La Villa Olímpica es uno de los sectores más modernos y acondicionados de la Barcelona actual. ( The Olympic Village is one of the most modern and well kept parts of present day Barcelona.) Se construyó para alojar a los 15.000 deportistas que participaron

en los Juegos Olímpicos y ha aportado un gran dinamismo a toda la fachada marítima. ( It was built to accommodate the 15,000 sportsmen and women who took part in the Olympic Games and has considerably livened up the whole of the water front.) Además de los los diferentes bloques de pisos, la Villa Olímpica cuenta con hermosas zonas ajardinadas, adornadas con esculturas contemporáneas, amplias avenidas y una singular oferta lúdica y comercial. (Besides the different blocks of flats, the Olympic Village has beautiful garden areas adorned with contemporary sculptures, wide avenues and an outstanding variety of commercial and leisure opportunities.) El nuevo puerto deportivo se ha convertido en una de las zonas de ocio más importantes de la ciudad. ( The new marina has become one of the most important leisure areas in the city.) Abundantes bares, restaurantes y terrazas se unen a las rehabilitadas playas. (Numerous bars, restaurants and sidewalk cafes join the vamped up beaches.) ROBIN: ¿Qué queda de las instalaciones deportivas, construidas para los Juegos Olímpicos del 1992? ( What remains of the sporting facilities built for the 1992 Olympic Games?) CATHY: El Anillo Olímpico fue construido para albergar las principales pruebas deportivas y ocupa una amplia explanada en la parte alta de la montaña Montjuic, cuyo nombre significa “Montaña de los Judíos.” (The Olympic Ring was built to house the principal sporting events and occupies a large area on the upper part of the Montjuic mountain, whose name means “Mountain of the Jews.”) Esta zona está dedicada por entero al deporte. ( This area is dedicated exclusively to sport.) El Estadio Olímpico conserva la fachada de 1992 pero presenta un interior totalmente reformado. (The

Olympic Stadium has preserved the 1992 exterior but has been totally reformed inside.) El Palau de San Jordi (Palacio de San Jorge) es un singular palacio de deportes, cubierto con una gran estructura metálica. ( Saint George´s Palace is an outstanding sports arena, covered by a large metallic structure.) Otra obra de interés es el pabellón de la Universidad del Deporte. ( Another interesting building is the pavilion in the University of Sport.) TERRY: He oído hablar de la Galería Olímpica. ¿Qué es exactamente? ( I have heard of the Olympic Gallery. What is it exactly?) CATHY: Es un museo que se encuentra en el Anillo Olímpico y que permite rememorar el espíritu de los Juegos Olímpicos. (It is a museum situated in the Olympic Ring and which enables one to recall the spirit of the Olympic Games.) Medallas ganadas por los atletas españoles, fotografías detalladas de pruebas que fueron especialmente emocionantes; cualquier objeto relacionado con el olimpismo tiene cabido en esta galería que revive los momentos estelares de Barcelona 92. (Any item related to the Olympics like medals won by Spanish athletes or detailed photographs of particularly exciting events have a place in this gallery which brings to life again the greatest moments of Barcelona 92.) NEIL: La famosa estatua de Cristóbal Colón preside el entorno. ¿Verdad? (The famous statue of Christopher Columbus presides over everything. Doesn´t it?) CATHY: Eso es. Fue construido en 1886 para conmemorar su primer viaje a América. (That´s right. It was built in 1886 to commemorate his first voyage to America.) Bueno; ya está para hoy. (Well; that´s it for today.) Adiós y hasta la próxima vez. (Goodbye until the next time.)
