EDITORS DESK Happy New Year to you all. Let’s hope it’s a a good one. We had a lovely break at Christmas but it’s back to work now. Hope you all had a good time and didn’t gain too much weight over the holidays. How many of you witnessed that wonderful sky a couple of weeks ago? wasn’t it amazing. I think it would make a fabulous screen saver. Wilma Stevenson has sent in a a couple of photographs but I’m afraid we can’t do it justice in black and white. If you log onto our website you can see it in all it’s glory. I personally found it quite spooky, If the end of the world was nigh I think that is what it would look like. Of course the end of the world is predicted for 2012 so don’t bother to pay your bills, splash out on yourself instead. Just kidding!!!
We are making a couple of changes to the Grapevine this year, including introducing a business section. Gaile Griffin Peers of the Marina Alta Business Club has agreed to write a regular column which we hope will be useful to anyone struggling to fight the recession. We are members of the club and have found her knowledge very useful in the past. More changes to come during 2012. We listen to what our readers want and try our best to come up with the goods. Some good suggestions have been sent in and we are working on them. Thank you for all your support and comments. We wish you and yours a Happy and Prosperous 2012 . A package of spending cuts and tax hikes Don't Put Those Scissors Away, Señor Rajoy... Spain's new centre-right government took office on 22 December, just in time to dump a veritable lump of coal into the Christmas stockings of people across Spain: a package of spending cuts and tax hikes worth around €16 billion for 2012. To be fair to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's cabinet, some of the measures adopted are quite bold. In particular:

Spanish Treasury Minister Cristóbal Montoro explained that the decision was taken in order to avoid raising VAT rates instead, an option which he said would have been more harmful for the country's growth; • Spanish public sector workers will see their salaries frozen this year, and will also be asked to work more (37.5 hours per week instead of the current 35). The salaries of those who refuse to do so will be cut accordingly; • Civil service will be significantly slimmed down, with the abolition of 30 Directorates-General; • State subsidies to political parties, trade unions and employers' associations will be cut by 20%. Despite this landmark austerity package, another one could be along as soon as Thursday. In fact, the target of €16bn in cuts was based on Spain meeting its deficit target of 6% of GDP by the end of 2011. Unfortunately, judging by what various Spanish ministers have been saying over the weekend, the target is going to be missed by at least 2% of GDP. Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz, said yesterday that Spanish deficit could be 8.2% of GDP at the end of 2011. If this were the case, he added, the government would have to cut around €38 billion in order to stick to its commitment to bringing public deficit down to 4.4% of GDP by the end of this year. In other words, tough sacrifices lie ahead, and they are not likely to be received particularly well in a country which spawned the indignados movement and one where, according to government figures published this morning, almost 4.5 million people did not have a job in 2011 (a 7.86% increase on 2010 figures). One thing is certain: the biggest test for Rajoy remains the radical reform of the labour market, which he promised during the last electoral campaign. Trade unions - possibly with some support from the opposition Socialist Party - may take to the streets, with several demonstrations and general strikes taking place across the country. However, if Rajoy and his cabinet do not stick to their guns now and fail to deliver, the Spanish economy will miss a crucial opportunity to try and boost its competitiveness in the longer term - which in turn might raise questions about Spain's future within the eurozone. The brothers co-wrote all of their own hits, as well as writing and producing several major hits for other artists. Barry Gibb and twin brothers Robin and Maurice Gibb were born on the Isle of Man, but the family moved to Manchester and then Australia with their younger brother Andy. By 1960 the Bee Gees were featured on television shows and got a record deal but frustrated by their lack of success, the Gibbs decided to return to England in late 1966. Before their departure from Australia to England, they sent demos to Brian Epstein who managed The Beatles. Brian Epstein had passed the demo tapes to Robert Stigwood. After an audition with Stigwood in February 1967, the Bee Gees were signed to a five-year contract. They had hits with "New York Mining Disaster 1941", "To Love Somebody", the No. 1 UK single "Massachusetts" "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" "I Started A Joke" . By 1969, the cracks began to show within the group. Robin began to feel that Stigwood had been favouring Barry as the frontman. Robin quit the group in mid-1969 and launched a solo career. Robin Gibb saw brief success in Europe and. Barry and Maurice continued as the Bee Gees, even recruiting their sister Lesley to appear with them on stage. The three brothers reunited in the later part of 1970 penning a series of songs about heartache and loneliness. By 1973, however, the Bee Gees were in a rut.. At Eric Clapton's suggestion, the brothers relocated to Miami, Florida, early in 1975 to record. After starting off with ballads, they eventually crafted more rhythmic disco songs, including their second US No. 1, "Jive Talkin'", along with US No. 7 "Nights on Broadway." The band liked the resulting new sound, and this time the public agreed, and with the single "You Should Be Dancing," it pushed the Bee Gees to a level of stardom they had not previously achieved. The Bee Gees agreed with Stigwood to participate in the creation of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. It would be the turning point of their career. The cultural impact of both the film and the soundtrack was seismic.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEPARTMENT DETECTS FIRST CASE OF RED WEEVIL IN A DATE PALM The municipal Department of Environment of Javea has detected the first case of Red Palm Weevil in a date palm tree. Up until now this plague had only been detected on the Canary Island Palm species, which is why the monitoring and inspection work were concentrating on this variety. Now however, this environmental problem has taken a step further by extending to new species. The infected palm is a monumental male tree, with height of 13 meters, and which is located in a ravine in the de la Guardia area, specifically in the Argilaga Street. According to the Department of Environment, it has been treated with mechanical pruning and an insecticide treatment, although the attack is quite grave and there are doubts that it can be saved. This case is very important, as it is the first time that a date palm has been affected. Experts from the department believe that the tremendous height of the tree, along with the few canary palm varieties existing in the surrounding area may have encouraged the presence of the palm weevil. In view of this new situation, the Town Council is requesting owners to monitor their trees closely to check for any symptoms that may indicate plague. There are already hundreds of Canary Palms in the municipality affected by this menace. The Environmental Department is keeping up with its surveillance campaign in coordination with the gardeners of the municipality. The Red Palm Weevil or curculionido ferruginoso (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus Olivier) is a weevil originating from the tropical regions of Asia and Polynesia that has been continuously spreading throughout other subtropical and temperate regions and colonising different species of palm trees. It is one of the main infestations affecting the palms of the Far East, the Middle East and North Africa. It was introduced into Spain at the time of grand scale importation of Phoenix dactylifera from Egypt. First detected in 1995 in Almu単ecar (Granada), the disease has since spread all along the coastal fringe of the Mediterranean and through the Canary Islands, where it is devastating great numbers of palms. Insects of this family are characterised by a beak shaped prolongation of the head, by distinctly elbowed antennae, and by their very characteristic reddish colourisation (ferruginoso) The adults can fly long distances and climb well, they are easily able to climb from the ground to the crown of palm trees. The female lays her eggs both in the insulated cavities of purposely made wounds at the base of the leaves and in the soft tissue inside leaf buds at the top of the trunk near the start of the leaves (the crown of the palm); it is therefore difficult to spot them. The larva grows inside the humid soft fibres of the palm, on which it also feeds. It is between 3 and 5 cm long, legless and of squat aspect. Its head is a ruddy brown colour. These larvae can excavate cavities of more than a metre in length.

The Pupa is found at the base of the palms, both inside and outside the trunk, protected by an oval cocoon of 4-6 cm made of brown dried palm fibres. In the Spanish Mediterranean region the complete life cycle from egg to adult takes between three and four months which means up to four generations a year. The adults colonise the palms as they fly between them. They prefer diseased trees that have pruning wounds or are weak from recent transplantation.
Before and After infestation SYMPTOMS Young centre leaves with leaflets that have been eaten producing serrated edges and are drooping and/or sickly looking. In the more advanced stages of infestation the crown breaks and is felled by the wind. Really bad attacks cause the crown to dry up and bring about the death of the tree. When the affected leaves are shed, and they fall quite readily, the open cavities at the base, made by the larvae in their last stage of development, can be observed. The pupal cocoons give off a characteristic acidic odour. METHODS OF CONTROL AND PREVENTION Given the characteristics and dangerous nature of the infestation it is vital that it is rapidly detected. To get a reliable diagnosis of the condition of a palm, a specialist company or professional, qualified and able to advise on treatments or methods of prevention should be consulted. Nowadays there are chemical products licensed for preventative and curative treatment, which when combined with biological treatments using entomological pathogenic nematodes can offer good results in the control and prevention of infestations. For the best results, it is recommended that these methods are carried out by licensed and qualified specialists. Avoid wounds in palm trees. Pruning should be carried out during cold spells of the year, when the adult insects are least mobile. This way, the spread of disease to places outside the immediate area can be reduced. Use of scar covering resin or pastes over prune wounds is recommended as is the application of insecticides to the cut areas.

Rule 10 : Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs. Rule 11 : Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one..

Agenda 21 is a non-political process whereby inhabitants of a town can have a say in the long-term sustainable development of their community. Jávea has been part of this UN initiative since 2004, but as proceedings are mostly conducted in either Castellano and Valenciano, the authors decided that as more than half the population of Jávea consists of expatriates, it would be useful to set up a Wiki website to disseminate information in English. Children’s Council One of the recent highlights for me personally was the inauguration within the Town Hall of the Children’s Council (Consell dels Xiquets). The 22 members, aged between 10 and 12, were elected by their peers in Jávea’s schools. It was a pleasure to see the enthusiasm and pride on the faces of the children who took their seats in the Council Chamber. This project recognizes the importance of our children as citizens, listening to their voices, and giving them an active role in changing the city in which they live. The ceremony was chaired by Councillor Cesc Camprubí - Citizen Participation, the Councillor for Education - Empar Bolufer, and myself.
Infrastructure improvements In conjunction with the Regional Government’s Department of Infrastructure, we have initiated a 2.5 million euros plan to renovate roads in Jávea, which is due for completion within five months. The project will cover improvements to the road surfaces in different areas of the municipality, including the Old Town, the Port as well as urbanisations on Montgo, Portitxol and Balcon al Mar. In addition to this, the work on the renovation of the Arenal will start during the first quarter of 2012. It is hoped that these improvements will make the Arenal promenade a flagship for tourism. The 'Gladiator' of Jávea This was how one of the Spanish newspapers described Jávea’s very own world champion, tennis player David Ferrer. In the 2011 ATP World Tour Finals in London he defeated the world No. 1- ranked Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-1 to reach the semifinal. Being a keen sportsman myself, I took a few days holiday in December to support David at the Davis Cup final in Seville, when again thanks to David’s success against Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro; defeating him in five sets, the Spanish team won the prestigious Davis Cup. Jávea was privileged to pay tribute in person to David Ferrer at a ceremony at Town Hall and afterwards when he was welcomed by hundreds of fans gathered in the Plaza de la Iglesia.
AMJASA When the new City Council took office in June, many problems were uncovered at AMJASA the municipal water company, the most crucial being an operating deficit. The new management board consisting of representatives from all the political parties in Jávea has been working tirelessly as a team to rapidly improve both the financial situation and the overall management of the company, and so we managed to move from a loss of 250,000€ at 30 June 2011, to a profit at 30 December 2011 of around 200,000 €. I would like to personally thank them all for their dedication and cooperation. Some difficult decisions had to be made in the interests of the town but prospects for AMJASA are improving. Denia Town Hall, for example, recently rejected a plan for a desalination plant in favour of purchasing water from Jávea. I'm sure there will be more positive news to report in the near future. 400th Anniversary for Jávea During 2012 Jávea will celebrate the 400th anniversary of its being granted the status of a Town (or Villa), by King Philip III on July 2 1612, allowing Jávea to have its own Town Hall. Global economic conditions will be dominated by news of a major spending spree when Bay Radio management splash out on a new chair for our studio guests. This is expected to kick-start a round of public spending and renewed consumer confidence. 2. Inspired by a recent meeting with Ryan Air the Bay Radio Management may levy a charge if any guest wishes to sit down. 3. Major unrest in the Middle East will finally be settled when Cambell Lamont offers to do a Karaoke tour as part of a peace seeking initiative. 4. The credibility of the X Factor finalist is once again threatened as the Christmas Number One chart position is secured by Bob and Noelle’s version of ‘Yesterday’. 5. The End of the World widely forecast for 21st December will be avoided when Kal discovers a new calendar for 2013. 6. Moody’s ‘Shut the Duck Up’ will be nominated for a Turner Prize and will be made available via a direct link into the Tate Modern. 7. My golf handicap will go to single figures (per hole). 8. Newspapers in the UK will boast ‘Bognor is Warmer than Benidorm! when, during one day in July, the temperature goes over 75. 9. Historians will get very excited by the discovery of amazing ancient music. These are subsequently identified as part of John Curtis on Ready Steady Sunday. 10. Final prediction is one that we make with total confidence and it is that our wonderful audience will continue to grow as more and more discover the fantastic radio formula that is Bay Radio. I have been in the UK for the festive period and had a fantastic time seeing my friends and family, the sales were incredible and as sad as it sounds I even enjoyed strolling around Tesco´s! If I am honest for once I felt like staying a little longer but as soon as I got back to Javea it felt great to be ´home´ the UK is great but we are all rather lucky to be in such a beautiful part of Spain. So what do we at Spectrum FM have planned for 2012? Our Secret Sound competition has restarted every weekday at 08.45 and 09.45 with the pot starting at 500€ and going up daily, December´s winner was a huge 710€ won by Sophia Bull of Oliva. Javea commemorates its 400th anniversary as an incorporated Town in 2012 The municipality will also remember the attack and looting by French troops that occurred 200 years ago Javea. Friday, 30 December 2011. At last night’s regular plenary session, the Javea Town Council agreed to commence the preparation for the celebration in 2012 of two anniversaries of historic nature. In the first place, they will celebrate the 400th anniversary of Javea’s official incorporation as a Town (or Villa), which allowed it to become a differentiated municipality with its very own Town Hall. Philip III was the king who granted this distinction on July 2, 1612. Four hundred years later, the town council believes that it is important to remember "and to commemorate this anniversary with the citizens, to strengthen the pride of belonging and promote our history, which is the key to our cultural heritage and guarantees our identity." In the unanimous agreement reached yesterday in
the plenary session, the Department of Culture was commissioned to organize a special programming of events to celebrate this important milestone and hold an extraordinary plenary session on 2 July 2012, which will mark the exact date when Javea received the title of Villa and became an incorporated town 400 years before. Also approved by unanimous decision was the motion by the Bloc Centristes municipal group to commemorate another episode in local history that occurred 200 years ago during the "French War". The motion refers to the attack to the parish church, convent and private homes on August 28, 1812 by French soldiers, the general looting of the town and the execution of several xabieros, as well as the destruction of the castle of La Fontana, occupied by British troops. The plenum also agreed to prepare a special programming to commemorate the historical event that has passed from generation to generation, almost becoming a legend of sorts after the historical archives were destroyed.

Happily, we enjoyed rather more indulging wines over the holidays, of which the highlight was probably a Bestue( Somontano) Chardonnay 2011. Wonderfully aromatic and crisp. I shall soon be going up to A Catarlo Todo in Teulada for a few more at 7.75€ before too many others get to try it and buy it. There were others too over the holidays, including some 10-year-old Tawny port. Now that was taking me right back to when I first went to Oporto in 1974 as an export brand manager for Cockburn’s….’remember one doesn’t say Cock, one says Co’? This time around, tough, the port was from Churchill’s but just as good as I like to recall enjoying back in some good old days. I go back further again to recall Harvey’s
The Directors’ Bin Port, light but with a depth of flavour on the aftertaste that lingered for long. I was told it was probably 30 years old or more, so about as old as I myself was then. I later had the chance to sample and enjoy vintage port from the previous century, the one in which my father had been born. But I am going backwards. So getting right back to the second decade of the current century, how was the 99c wine? This is just where so many of us fall too often into the price trap. We let our prior knowledge of the price unduly influence our own assessment and thereby our appreciation of any wine. Let’s not be mistaken here. Many wine makers can stick on a fancy label and price too, to take advantage of our failings to be truly objective. So don’t ask the price first when offered a wine to try. First decide if you like it or not. Then decide, once you know the price, whether or not you think it represents good value for your taste and pocket. This why I really enjoy tasting wine and wine tastings where one is initially unaware of the price. It all too tricky to be truly objective when one has bought the wine oneself. Well, the Fidencio 2011 from La Mancha pleasantly surprised me. The wine was indeed fresh and did have some fruit flavours. For 99c in Mercadonna and when looking for a reasonable wine for general drinking with general eating, worth trying .The one for 95 c? I’m letting that one mature a while. The Cookery Page ECONOMICAL COOKING Many of my older readers will be able to recall nutritious meals which were quite inexpensive. Times are harder of late, so I thought I would share a few ideas with you on how to save on some meals. 1. Oats made into porridge or muesli, healthy and cheap. 2. Stews made using a ham (jambon) bone or a chicken carcass (available in Mercadonna) plus a stew pack of vegetables are very tasty and filling. 3. When buying chicken choose a whole one. It works out cheaper and you have the carcass left over for stock. 4. Eggs provide a good source of protein, and there are so many different ways to make them interesting. 5. Tomato juice can be turned into very good soup using onions and herbs. 6. Pasta is very filling and not only for Bolognese. These are just a few tips. I would love to hear from readers about their money saving ideas. This month´s recipe is for a casserole using beef. BEEF WITH OLIVES AND ALMONDS
Ingredients ½ kilo stewing beef cut into cubes 1 large sliced onion 1 clove garlic chopped 2 large tomatoes peeled and de-seeded 1 tsp cinnamon 50gms olives 50gms almonds 1 tbsp flour 300ml stock 300ml red wine 2tbsp oil Mercadona
Method Heat oven to 180c Roll meat lightly into flour and brown in oil in a frying pan. Add the onion and garlic and fry gently to soften the onion. Transfer the contents to a casserole dish. Rinse the frying pan with the stock and wine, add the cinnamon, olives and almonds and put all into the casserole dish. Put on the lid and cook for about two hours until the meat is tender. A Happy New Year to you All Unfortunatly I have not been to well over the last few weeks and have not really been able to write my column this month. I have therefore asked Derek and Sue to put in some news about two of the projects which my department have recently completed. Hopefully I will be able to carry on as normal next month

quence of these legal battles, the normal maintenance work was not being carried out during this time period. However, now that the Council has been granted ownership of the footpath (though not of the adjacent land), they have started with the cleaning and are taking on all the postponed projects. Doris Courcelles said that the viewpoint is located in an area of, "spectacular scenic and environmental value," which is protected by the European Union due to the presence of a large number of endemic species. In fact, to carry out the renovation they have had to strictly abide to two regional decrees that regulate threatened floral conservation measures and control invasive alien species in the Valencian Community. The work that has been completed include the renovation of 300 metres of path that lead to the viewpoint as well as the removal of about 40 square metres of concrete slab that had covered an old disused septic tank which was found to have been sealed and clogged. About 12 metres of tosca masonry wall was demolished, which was in a precarious state and partially collapsed, “due to the actions of the weather, landslides and the invasive plants.” A new wall has been built with selected local tosca stone which is 12 metres in length and about 80 centimetres in height and 30 in thickness. In addition, a sewage pipe from two nearby houses has been replaced by a new culvert. The Department of Environment has also manually removed the invasive plants along the path, as well as installed steps constructed from railway sleepers to strengthen the slope. Wooden rails have been replaced and the concrete steps cleaned and repaired where necessary. The area had been landscaped with species native to the habitat. And to explain everything to the visitor, an appropriate sign has been installed as part of the network of "miradors" which was first inaugurated by the Town Hall in 1996 with the collaboration of the Valencian Agency of Tourism

She speaks Castellano, English, French, Dutch, and German and is still trying to improve her Valenciano. As a consequence, she knows many residents and societies of Spanish and other nationalities here in Jávea. She moved to Spain in 1978. She has a son aged 29 and can empathise with parents in a foreign country.

Traditional New Years Day Charity Swim Raises 2121 euros For the past 28 years the kind people of Javea have Children.The event has grown in popularity over the raised money on New Years Day for the children at the years, It has gone from a handful of swimmers and specOrphanage Preventorio de Gandia. This has become a tators to a crowd in the hundreds. So much so that it is tradition in which people dress up in funny costumes and go into the sea and stay there in the cold water for
10 minutes. Money is then collected by well wishers to buy Christmas presents for the disadvantaged children. Last year over 1600 euros was collected. Karen and Nigel Rushton of the Lancashire Bruyer are the organisers of this event and this year was no exception. 40 brave souls in fancy dress once again braved the cold Mediterranean and stayed in for the required 10 minutes, to raise money for the Spanish children. The collection buckets were being rattled as usual and the generous people of Javea dug deep into their pockets to raise 400 euros to add to money raised from sponsorship and raffles to make a total of 2,121 euros to buy gifts for the children at the orphanage and the Emaus
now a requirement to obtain permission from the police so that safety measures can be put in place. There was a police presence this year which was a worry for some people but we have been assured that they were only there to prevent obstuctions or mishaps. A good day was had by all.

Jose Chulvi, Oscar Anton Izquierdo and Juan Ortola Three men who share the same vision for Javea Read what they feel they have already achieved and their plans for the future of Jávea. by Sue Le Breton Six months on since the coalition stepped into the Town Hall, we wondered if they had achieved what they had hoped to achieve in that time. So we went along to the Town Hall with a long list of questions to put to Major Jose Chulvi, Deputy Mayor Oscar Anton and 2nd Deputy Mayor Juan Ortola. We invited all three to take part in an interview. designed to inform us as to what they have already achieved since taking over from the former regime and what they hope to achieve in the near future They took time out of their busy schedule to give the Grapevine readers some comprehensive answers to some very searching questions. We were greeted warmly by all three and they were even considerate enough to enlist the help of a translator. Here’s what they had to say.

Jose Chulvi “The first 6 months have gone extremely well especially because there has been a complete change in attitude. Everyone is working together for the citizens of Javea.”
Oscar “There are plans to help to stimulate job growth. including the launch of an Employment Think Tank which will be made up of professionals, technicians and business people. There are also plans to occupy empty buildings. There may be mini grants for new businesses who offer work to the unemployed and maybe even for the self employed. One example is a group of gardeners who have formed a society to work on projects for the public administration. We plan to use more small businesses to work for the public administration. A funding rebate for new businesses may be introduced to try to bring down the unemployment rate for all age groups”.
2. Are there any plans to help local businesses, maybe in the form of grants or loans to assist in updating their businesses
3. A major part of the town’s economy is tourism. Are there any plans to promote tourism, and improve facilities for tourists?
1 How do you think things have gone during the first 6 months in control?
Jose Chulvi “The policy has always been to attract quality tourists to Javea. Now our aim is to give quality to the tourists. We can achieve this by giving quality infrastructure and services to the residents of Javea which in turn will benefit the tourists. Many Javea tourists are 2nd home owners who will benefit from the improvements made”. 4 When is the Arenal renovation project set to start and what will it entail?” ”There have been several meetings with regional Government in order to ensure that the renovations will be completed before the tourist season begins. Tenders for the Project will be awarded on the 9th January. The work to begin by the end of February calculated to last four months and must be completed by the end of June. Repaving the Paseo, new
5 What is the situation of the municipal coffers? What is our municipal debt ? Oscar. “Obviously there is still a debt of 42 million, but there is no problem with the treasury. The Town Hall pays it’s suppliers and it’s payroll promptly within what the law establishes, very few Town Halls if any can do this. We do have a debt but there are a number of measures in place to reduce it. The first measure is early payment of the debt, we are going to pay back four to five million a year so that in four years we will have paid back 20 million. Which will drastically reduce the interest payments. We are also paying back the loans which haven’t been used, for instance the ECO Loan which was to outfit the new building has been given back. Also not to take on any new loans. With these three measures we hope to reduce the debt considerably”. 6 How have the facilities for foreign residents been improved?

“Oscar's department now boasts a newly created Foreigners Help desk in the Portal del Clot. Basically we lias with all the departments and help a lot of people, it has been a breath of fresh air for a lot of people with a variety of problems. Problems are solved very quickly and easily by friendly people who are happy to help”. 7 What is your government doing in terms of Town Hall communications and signage in different languages? I see the Town Hall website is still only in Valenciano and Castellano. “The Help Desk from my Foreign Residents Department has helped translate and designed the new signage for the Economic Office in the Calle Mayor in three languages, which will go up soon. The notifications that go out to foreign residents for padron renewal are now going out in English. The Economic office is also sending out the Catastro notifications in 3 languages. The new software being developed for the Portal del Clot office will be multilingual. So several departments are making strides”. 8 How can the foreign residents help Javea? “The Help Desk has coordinated several volunteer initiatives on the part of foreign resident groups. For example, in October they developed the teaching programme for Creama and coordinated 20 volunteer native teachers to give English courses to 70 unemployed students.They also
coordinated volunteers from the U3A to man the European corner at the intercultural Fair organised by Social Services and the Red Cross. Recently they have coordinated a group of volunteers to carry out the translation of all the labels and panels in the Museum Soler Blasco. We also have the example of the fine work done by all the charities for the benefit of the town and the disadvantaged. This government is showing our gratitude for all this fine work in the many press releases being sent out acknowledging this. This has never happened in the past”. 9 What measures are your government taking to improve the postal delivery in the urbanizations? ‘The Correos is not something that the Town Hall has any control over as it’s a national organisation. We have been collaborating with a number of people to find a solution to this problem. Things like putting collective buzon’s in urbanzsations is one solution. It’s the same for the Town Hall, they lose Money because they send out notifications to people and they come back. One of the things that the Correos say is that there is a problem with the street map of Javea. The house numbers are not correlated enough Which makes it difficult for them. The catastro are currently taking ariel photographs of all the houses that have not been registered which might help a little to get some of the correct information. It is a costly exercise to correct this problem as Javea is so spread out.

10 What is being done to improve the public transport in Javea? Juan Ortola “'In terms of public transport. The participatory budgets in agenda 21, the project that received the most votes were for the erection of a bus station. This was approved and will be situated behind Mercadona in the Avenida del Palmela. This will be a canopy structure with a ticket office, and work will commence on it sometime in February. Also a meeting is set with myself and the transport dept of the regional government to get public transport to all of the urbanizations. This is a real need and necessity in Javea”. 11 .What is the status of the General Plan? Jose Chulvi “We are still in the early stages even after 5 years. The first thing to be done, was for the town hall to draft a consultative document. This was done by this new government and was sent to Valencia. An answer was received from Valencia in the form a Document of reference which is being studied right now. There is a lot of legislation that limits the scope of action that the town hall can decide. Things like the legislation that refers to the floodlands and this has to be respected. Forest land, the Natural reserve of the Montgo and the coastline. All this is being studied. Town planning and environment will be deciding and debating this to see how much the Town Hall can add and appeal to this, but with an area of 68 square kilome-
tres this task might be bigger that we thought”. 12 Can you explain the advances being made in the Strategic Plan? “The strategic plan process began in November with a public conference where they explained what it was about and how it was to be done. After that they introduced these sectoral forums. The first round of meetings with the tourism forum, the social services forum, the town planning and environment forum, the economic forum and the cultural forum. After this first round of meetings the person in charge will put forward a document and starting next week they will prepare a second round of meetings. After which they will draft a plan of Social and economic stimulus for Javea. This document will be published in June. However they won’t wait for the document to be published in order to start, they will be planning and working at the same time. 13 How is the three-party coalition getting along? Juan “I have been a politician for 9 years and of the three of us I have had the most experience in Municiple government I am certainly the oldest. In my nine years I have never experienced anything as gratifying as this, I am working alongside hard working young people with new ideas that are only working for Javea. My party is happy to be working alongside the PSOE and XD and I am sure this will last a long time. It will be four years of

hard work and responsibility but it is wonderful with the hard work and the joy working with these young people”. Oscar “I absolutely echo everything that Juan has said. All the parties come from different origins and different ideologies but we have one common goal which is the benefit of the town of Javea. Every one is working in the same direction. There is no personalism no ideologies it’s not me or you, it is a joint commitment to get a project done. The formula for success is to coordinate everyone in just one project one goal. These are difficult times certainly, but with the faith, trust and goodwill of the parties, difficulties are being overcome and objectives are being met, little by little and that is the formula. Faith trust and goodwill and a common goal”. Jose Chulvi “I also echo everything that has been said and Oscar and I have also been councillors for four years, although for the first 15 months I was actually in government. For me it is also a huge difference. I realised that this was going to be different in the first meeting they had to form the coalition. For the first time from the three parties, it wasn’t what’s for me, they were talking instead in global terms of what can we do for Javea. Instead of thinking politically they thought like a business, who had the best profile for which department and that is what they did. They put the right people in the departments that suited their abilities. I express only gratitude to my colleagues and feel that this new kind of attitude permeates the entire

21 councillors that are in the opposition and it makes for a different environment. The day that I took office as Mayor I quoted Kennedy. The most intelligent thing I do is to surround myself with intelligent people and that is what I have done. It has been a very good thing for Javea, Now instead of reading bad things in the press about Javea there are only positive things being reported”. 14 Has the "crisis" affected crime rate in Javea? Juan Ortola “The figures show that the occurrence of robberies in the town is well below the average for the regional area of Valencia. What has increased are the number of robberies in empty villas. Because they are empty there is less damage and obviously no personal injuries. One of the peculiarities of Javea is that there are areas that are quite remote, so periodically there is a police presence which acts as a deterrent. However the crime rate in Javea is the lowest in the region”. 15 What has been done to make it easier to obtain licenses to open new businesses? Do you have any figures on the number of new business licenses granted or how many of them are for foreigners? Juan Ortola “In the year 2011 between 80 and 90 licenses have been issued to new businesses the majority of these businesses have been bars, hairdressers and clothing shops. And the majority of them were to foreign residents. The crisis has
affected business in Javea and there have been fewer openings since the recession”. oscar Anton “Last month we made some changes to make it easier not only to obtain a business license but also a license to enable you to make minor changes to your property. In the past you would have to make a request and then wait for a technician to visit the property. Then you would wait again for the paperwork to be drawn up. All this took time. Now all you have to do is make a request. Tell them what you intend to do and you can start the work. A technician will visit the property to check that you are doing what you said and then issue a license. This is called an act of faith”. What is planned for the next six months? Oscar “The next six months will see the results of all the hard work done in the first six months. I would like to point out that Javea is the only Town Hall in the province, perhaps in the whole Valencian region to have had it’s budgets approved by the first of January. Therefore the projects planned can be done that much faster. Some of the things we are going to see in the next six months are things that were approved in the participatory budgets. For instance finishing of the Augusta, the skate park, and the roundabout in the Pla. Because of funding we can also carry on with the repaving project on the Arenal. In June we will be
receiving a new software package that will give us a whole new administration that will be simpler and in many languages. A one stop shop that is not only physical but digital. In the tax office, the payment of receipts by credit card by installments is going to become very easy. This is because of all the work already done and because the budgets were approved so early” Jose Chulvi “I would also like to highlight how important it was getting the budgets passed so quickly. Never before has has a Town Hall had there annual budget approved by the first of January. A tremendous effort was made and carried out with efficiency. The politicians have worked hard and their efficiency is passing down to all the town hall workers. I would like to thank Oscar for coordinating all of this. We are going to see a new relationship between the citizens and their Town Hall (not the Town Hall) their Town Hall. We are making a great effort to communicate with people and attending to cultural diversity, which is hard work, but it needs to be done. The first months are always the most difficult. It is like trying to stop a huge machine that is in motion and then changing gear. Getting used to new people, new ways of working and new councillors, making the shift is the hardest part. It is working well and I am confident that things will go well in the future”.

I came across an interesting phrase recently that I think sums up the feelings of many businesses in Jávea, at the moment – Crisis Fatigue! We are becoming tired of telling each other that the good days will come back again if we can just get through another season, month or week. The depressing part of that, as I look around Jávea, is that many businesses have struggled to a standstill, where the only recourse seems to be to slash prices or cut opening hours …although discounting the second or third product bought, rather than the first, is a clever touch… I am not convinced that these “remedies” are the answer because I am seeing new businesses and new ideas and fresh approaches all the time – although not many of them seem to be getting the publicity they need. So this month’s challenge is to write in, to tell me about successful ideas you have noticed in others or your own innovation for your current business so that we can start spreading the news through the Grapevine. Those of us who have survived the last five years of depression, recession and declining customer base are here because we are survivors, with the ability to adapt our products and services to the local demand. A good example of an adaptable business is the Grapevine, itself. Sue and Derek work hard to run this popular magazine. The advertising is important to many Jávea based businesses, but the news and information is important too. It is hard for a monthly publication to scoop the weeklies, but month on month, they manage it. However, they don’t just produce and manage the Grapevine, they also run a thriving printing business at The Copi Shop in Jávea Port. They hire out equipment and provide a variety of services, including UKTV and links to Currency exchange and they are a mine of information about what is happening in and around Jávea. Derek and Sue are members of Marina Alta Business Club, so I have had the pleasure of standing with them at
Trade fairs and other events and have first-hand experience of how useful their local knowledge can be. So what is on the horizon for local businesses this month? Everyone’s tight pockets are likely to be squeezed even tighter. IRPF income tax is going up 3/4% to 7% from February. There is a strong chance that IVA will rise in March, but at least this should encourage sales in January and February. Despite recent admissions from the Spanish Secretary of State for Employment that not one of the recent labour reforms has actually improved the labour market, there are more changes in employment laws in the wind. Unemployed foreigners in Spain make 14% of the 4.4 million total unemployed here. There are c. 1.74 million nonSpanish registered as working, representing 10% of the total workforce registered with Social Security, but this number is going down either because less of us are registering or because more of us are leaving the system, although not necessarily the country. Finding legal and insured tradesmen to employ is going to get harder as our costs escalate (making it difficult for us to compete with those working on the “Black”), so it good news that more and more Town Hall services in Jávea are either going online or centralising at the Portal el Clot office. The easier it is to register for services and the less time we have to spend messing about with paperwork, the more time we have for other things. Banding together with other businesses is also a good move in a recession, sharing information and reducing costs - so why not join a local business association like Marina Alta Business Club? At this desk, one can apply for duplicate receipts, estimation of rates and fees, set up direct debit payment of IBI, rubbish Tax and other taxes, apply for refund of undue payments, refund when de-registering (scrapping) a vehicle, estimate of capital gains on property and various other matters. Divorce/House Sale/Bills: If you divorce your spouse, do not assume that the Ayuntamiento will know that you are divorced and may not wish for your bills to be shared or that only one person is now responsible. I have recently had a few visitors at the HelpDesk who have had related problems. If you divorce and you wish to change name on IBI, Basura bills to one person only, that person has to bring the Escritura of property showing their name as owner or a legal document showing separation of property/goods etc. (Separacion de Bienes) also copy of their NIE and last copy of IBI and/or Basura bill paid. This change of name on bills can be carried out at Economic Office at Calle Mayor 15. where they have to fill out a form for the Ministry of Hacienda stating title-holder has changed for IBI. When you sell your property, you will have a tax to pay to the Ayuntamiento based on catastral value of the property (Impuesto sobre el incremento del valor de los terrenos de naturaleza urbana) . If the property it is still in two names and you have not notified the Ayuntamiento of any change/divorce, then they will send out one bill for this tax to one of the names. When you divorce and intend to sell your house, if you wish any taxes to be paid 50/50 by the owners, make sure your lawyer or agent is aware of this and does advise the Ayuntamiento to send out 2 separate bills – if in doubt, check yourself with Economic Office to make sure they know. Licence for Burning: In the last few weeks Licences for Burning garden and green waste have been granted again. Licences can be obtained from Avda Amanecer 2 and last for one month. The permit is issued immediately – you will be given one copy to keep Permission is never granted to burn on the Montgo natural park area. If your property is located 500m or more from a Zona Forestal you do not need a burning permit. In the Zona del Pla no permit is needed. If your land is under 500m from Zona Forestal you DO need a permit. Burning is allowed from 7 – 11am (except Sundays & Holidays). During summer months July -September (sometimes for a longer period depending on rainfall and fire risk) NO burning is allowed. Check with Local Police on 965790081 for summer dates and days when burning is not permitted due to high winds (even with permit).

Dr. Christoph Semler qualified as a doctor at the University of Frankfurt and then specialised in General Practice in the UK. He is a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners, holds a Diploma from the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, a Diploma in Child Health Surveillance. He opened his private practice in Jávea in 2001. Dr Semler is fluent in English, Spanish and French and has a working knowledge of Dutch. Laura, in Benitachell.
Dear doctor, I have a problem in my armpits. I frequently get painful red and hard swellings like lumps on either side of my armpits. I had them a lot in summer and thought they might have to do with sweating and using deodorant. They went away in autumn but have just come back again. I am 34 years old and do not have any other illness or take any medication. So far I have tried using paracetamol and sometimes ibuprofen which helped a bit. But they keep coming back, even now in winter when I don not really sweat. Dear Laura, it seems to me you are suffering from armpit boils or, to be medically correct, from a condition called hydroadenitis. What happens there is that a hair follicle gets inflamed, swells up and becomes painful. Typically the painful boil disappears after a short while, maybe seven to ten days. It takes a hairy part of the body for them to develop and there has got to be some friction between skin folds as well. So most often they appear in the armpits but can also come up in between the buttocks or in the groin area. What exactly starts the inflammation one does not really know. It is well established that this illness runs in families, asking your parents you might find out that there are more sufferers in your family. There is no particular trigger factor that would make these boils appear, as far as one knows. Stress however seems to bring them on more often. Deodorants have often been blamed as the culprit but not
using any does not stop the boils from coming on. It only makes you a social outcast. For some reason the hair follicle gets blocked and the hair root with its surrounding tissue becomes inflamed. It is not primarily an infection as opposed to infected hair follicles which can occur after shaving in the armpits. That is why any measures to reduce inflammation can help to ease the pain. So taking antiinflammatory should be your first step. I suggest a good dose of ibuprofen three or four times a day for the duration of the boil. Should the inflammation be particularly painful then a short course of cortisone tablets will certainly help. If you do not want to take tablets any more than necessary you could also try a hot bath or just wedge a hot flannel in your armpit to reduce the pain of minor flareups. It has often been tried to treat the boils with antibiotics as soon as they appear. But since this is mainly an inflammatory process and not an infection antibiotics do not help in an acute attack. For the same reason taking the knife and try to open one of these boils is not a good idea. In fact it makes it only worse. If they come up frequently and make life a real misery, which they can easily do, a prophylactic treatment should be tried. Here the aim would be to stop them from coming up in the first place or at least reduce the number of boils that are to appear. As opposed to treating an already present boil, as a preventer antibiotics have been used successfully. There are different types which work well, the choice depending on the individual
patient. To be effective they have to be taken daily over the course of months, a bit like with treating teenage spots. Another treatment that works very well for acne are retinoid drugs. They are powerful drugs to stop skin inflammation but have some important drawbacks. They are harmful to the growing baby in the womb. So any woman who takes them must not become pregnant at any cost and would have to wait for some time after stopping them in case a pregnancy is wanted. Also retinoids can cause damage to the liver, therefore regular blood checks are necessary for those who take them. That sounds somewhat offputting, admittedly. But where these boils cause a lot of suffering over a long period, retinoids can really help and make a big difference to the affected person´s life. If for whatever reason treatment with tablets is not possible, then one can try to surgically remove skin from the armpit. This would at the same time also take all the hair follicles away and thus the cause of the trouble. After this opration scar tissue will form which does not have any hair follicles. Problem solved. Of course there will then always be a scar visible under the arms. Another destructive treatment option is to burn the hair follicles using a laser or destroying them through freezing. This sounds quite drastic but the condition can be very unpleasant and then only drastic measures help. In your particular case, dear Laura, I would use ibuprofen in a good and strong dose and if the boils keep coming back try preventative treatment with some antibiotic.

Old retireds Four retired old guys are walking down a street in London. They turn a corner and see a sign that says, “Old Timers Bar - ALL drinks 10p.” They look at each other and then go in thinking this is too good to be true. SATELLITE KNOW HOW
Richard Pollock Consultant Electronic Engineer Happy New Year. Real Digital FreeSat+ H.D. with some Pay Channels included !!! A new approach from a new Company, they have, they believe the answer to many viewers who have been waiting for a combination of Free to View Programmes together with a small mix of Pay Channels. The difference being that the supplied Card covers we are told an inclusive Freeto-Air Service along with a Cheap Pay as You Go, Pay –T.V. Service and will include some Sports Channels including Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 2 and some more Programmes of General interest like Sony Entertainment,13th Street etc.. It would appear that some 225 T.V. Channels and 75 Radio Stations are under consideration and of course it will also have the five Free to Air H.D. Channels that are on offer at FreeSat with seemingly more coming along. They are also intent on setting up their own EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) those people who operate Germanic types of Satellite Receivers know only too well that it can be quite difficult to remember the Channel layout and when Channels are relocated for a variety of reasons it can be very tiresome attempting to find the missing stations. Real Digital have had a few false starts, lets hope this time they get it off the ground! Real Digitals offer will operate in the U.K., however I would not be surprised if it really gets going that some Satellite Receivers will turn up in Eastern Spain. Of course as in the U.K. a Satellite Dish will be required and as they are using the same signals that are available in this area of Spain, providing the Satellite Receivers have a suitable Front End performance for our very poor signals in some instances and of course for the likes of BBC and ITV etc transmissions then its
another possibility to study. From information gleaned the Basic Satellite Receiver will cost in the region of £160 and for a Twin Tuner with the PVR (Record Facility) around £300. Initially the ‘Real Essential’ package of six extra Channels will cost some £10 per month and for further Channels up too £25 per month, however you can pay on a month by month basis and so if you are a Cricket lover for instance you can switch off the Sky Sports section out of season ! I can confirm that the Transponder 1N after completing testing will be transmitting ITV1 and Channel Five (5), 5+ etc and that it is possible to receive them on Satellite Dishes of the smaller variety,for instance, a well aligned 80 c.m. type (however Peter says 90 c.m. is too small in his area of Alfas Del Pi !), of course should you have a 1.0, metre / 1.2 metre or even larger, better still, I have had excellent results on a 1 metre type here in Javea. Both stations are Free to Air and do not require a Card of any type. This has confused many people as 1N is using a 'Spot Beam' which is aimed in a very narrow configuration covering the the U.K. and Northern Ireland, so how come ITV and Channel Five(5) are operating on very small Satellite Dishes? Could it be that after all final testing is completed the 'Spot Beam' is modified to close down reception in Europe as best they can? The installers have taken a bit of stick of late, I think this is quite unfair, after all we are told that many if not all Channels will be transmitted via Astra 1N, if that is the case, I have had the question asked, then could this mean that we will all then receive BBC1 and ITV1 on a quite small Satellite Dish, somehow I do not think that is going to happen. Getting up to date information from Astra SES is very difficult, after all the BBC when completing their last

Transponder 1N however we are told will only stay at 28.2 degrees SSE for a period of eighteen months to two years, after this it will then be re-positioned in its intended placement at 19.2 degrees SSE. 1N besides having the ‘Spot Beam’ facility it also however has two further Beams and these offer an extended coverage over a large part of Europe, they are known as Pan-Europe Beams 1 and 2, could we assume that one of these has been brought into action after all we do know that before the recent move of ITV1 and Channel 5 they were operating on a Southern Beam. Seems strange to me that those who profess to know everything go very quite when asked for information on that point !!!
Having checked with many Installers covering this area and also the two principle suppliers of Satellite Dishes,Satellite Receivers and all associated components ,we have all found that the strongest BBC1 Signal is obtained stretching from Denia,Javea and Calpi when using the BBC 1 H.D. DVB-S2 Format, for anyone in the trade who has any doubts then he may visit my Worship in Javea and we can do a side by side comparison,possibly signals are better on towards Gandia and further inland ? In may own case I have loaned out overnight a Satellite Receiver with the H.D.facility to several people who have excellent 2.4 metre Satellite Installations,in all cases I have had a very positive result,they have all reported that the H.D. signal out performs standard BBC1. I have also found that the best of the Standard BBC1 signals is on the West Midlands Channel,this also includes Yorkshire & Lincolnshire,East,Wales ( On a Sky Box this is Number 979 ) and I have listed the required Data to ensure you can locate it on makes of Satellite Receivers as follows,
Providing the Signals stay for ITV1 and Channel 5 it will be very useful for those operating the smaller Satellite Dishes, however nothing is written in Tablets of Stone, later we can expect several other changes, not always to the liking of the Continental Viewer. I have listed below the required information and for this you will have to pop these figures into your ‘Add Channels’ Menu. On the standard Sky Box this is achieved by selecting Services, System Set Up and then Add Channels, when using your Remote Control to enter the new figures and of course the 4 Arrows surrounding the Select Button to arrive at the other options on, completion you must follow the on screen instructions and make sure to Store the channels. For Generic Satellite Receivers, these will in most cases be required to be re-scanned or it may be better to consult the Instruction Book, failing this contact your Dealer. Again I do not know how long these signal will be available ! I hope this Christmas season has treated you all fine, but holidays are over and it’s time to get back to work! This year is the one Microsoft has anticipated their new Operating System will be launched to the general public. Beta testing versions have been out for a while and it seems everything is coming into place now, so if nothing goes wrong in the final development process, the Software will be launched before this summer. Therefore it’s time to start approaching this new Operating System and seeing what it brings new to us. Microsoft started developing Windows 8 the day they launched Windows 7, aiming to be the first OS to conquer desktop, portable and mobile computing all together in the same software.
The last time Microsoft made such dramatic changes to the way its Operating System looks and functions, along with indeep revisions to the basic technology, was many years ago with the launching of their popular Windows 95. Remember the queues at major stores to purchase it? The first change we appreciate is how fast it loads in comparison to existing versions of Windows. Only a few seconds after pressing the power button of our computer we access to the brand new Start screen, where in place of a Taskbar full of applications and a desktop loaded with shortcuts, your screen simply consists of a grid of tiles. As with icons, clicking or tapping each of these tiles launches an application; but on the other hand unlike icons, these tiles display useful data. The weather tile, for instance, displays the current weather and updates itself without your
input. It’s pretty similar to what we find on a telephone with the Windows Phone 7 software, if you’ve had the chance to have a look at one. In Windows 8, whether you're using a touch screen tablet or a powerful desktop PC with a keyboard and mouse, the default interface displays a horizontal grid of tiles that are arranged into customizable groups. Applications work like tablet apps and display well on smaller, finger-driven screens. They display full screen and there are no minimize or maximize buttons, scrollbars or drop-down menus. Touch navigation, is fast and responsive, simple and intuitive, and it has all the necessities you'd expect to make a touch screen device feel right, including several built-in touch keyboards. These keyboards are much better than what you get in former Windows versions, and they have autocorrect and spell check enabled. Swipe a finger from right to left on a tablet or touch screen PC and you're presented with the five Windows 8 options: Start, Search, Share, Devices and Settings. Start always returns you to the Start screen, but each of the other items brings up a context-sensitive menu relative to the application you're using. For example, in a photo-viewing application, the Search button searches through your photos. The Share button allows you to post a photo on Facebook, Twitter, or any other application that can receive images in this manner. The Devices option lets you access a printer to print a photo or a camera to import new ones. The Settings option displays a list of
Page 31 photo-specific settings, such as brightness and contrast, plus core system-wide settings such as volume, power and networking. Swipe a finger from the left of the screen and you flip back through your running applications. A swipe from the bottom or top of the screen reveals an 'application bar' overlay, which fulfils a similar function to a right-click context menu in previous versions of Windows. In a photo application, you will find commands for cropping, resizing, rotating and fixing red-eye in this bar. An overlay at the top of the screen handles in-application navigation, such as bookmarks or recent documents. Even though we’ve started analyzing touch interacting with your Windows 8, you don't need to use Windows 8 via touch, nor buy a tablet or touch screen PC if you prefer working with a keyboard and mouse. Just move your mouse to the lower-left corner to pop up the Options. Moving across the grid of tiles works with the mouse's scroll wheel, but you also get a scrollbar in all scrollable parts of the interface. Well, it’s enough for now. Run out of space!! The Goldberg Brothers The Inventors of the Automobile Air Conditioner Here's a little known fact for automotive buffs or just to dazzle your friends. The four Goldberg brothers, Lowell, Norman, Hiram, and Max, invented and developed the first automobile air-conditioner. On July 17, 1946, the temperature in Detroit was 97F. The four brothers walked into old man Henry Ford's office and sweet-talked his secretary into telling him that four gentlemen were there with the most exciting innovation in the auto industry since the electric starter. Henry was curious and invited them into his office. They refused and instead asked that he come out to the parking lot to their car. They persuaded him to get into the car, which was at about 130F degrees, turned on the air conditioner, and cooled the car down immediately. The old man got very excited and invited them back to the office, where he offered them $3 million for the patent. The brothers refused, saying they would settle for $2 million, but they wanted the recognition by having a label, 'The Goldberg Air-Conditioner' on the dashboard of each car in which it was installed. Now for old man Ford there was no way he was going to put the Goldberg's name on two million Fords. They haggled back and forth for about two hours and finally agreed on $4 million and that just their first names would be shown. And so to this day, all Ford air conditioners show -Lo, Norm, Hi, and Max -- on the controls.

10 reasons to adopt an older dog I think we all agree on the fact that puppys are adorable. If you are a dog lover, then every puppy you see will make you smile and want to cuddle it. Unfortunately, it's also this feeling that makes people buy a puppy at a pet shop, without thinking about the consequences of this 'impulse-shopping'. A dog, especially a pup, needs a lot of time and should never be bought without thinking. It should be for life. In Spain a lot of pups end up on the streets when they grow older. They are unwanted presents, too big, too wild, cost money, and sometimes even the wrong colour!! As a result of this, a lot of 'older' dogs end up at the dog pound and have less chances of getting adopted. Simply because people think older dogs are more difficult to train, and will cost more money (any idea what a puppy will cost you?) Thats why I would like to give you 10 reason to adopt an older dog. 1. Older dogs are usually house trained, keeping you from having to go through the difficult stages of teaching manners and mopping up after accidents. 2. Older dogs won't go through a teething period chewing on furniture, shoes or other items. 3. Since older dogs have mellowed out a bit, they are often more focused and able to learn quickly. 4. Older dogs save you a lot of training. They know how to walk on the lead, know what NO means and much more. 5. They settle in much easier than younger dogs because they have learned from experience that they need to "go along to get along." 6. Senior dogs are grateful for their new home. They are great at giving love and being a companion as a sign of their thanks.. 7. Ever heard the old adage "what you see is what you get?" Unlike puppies, older dogs have grown into their shape and personality while puppies can still grow and end up quite different than what they seemed at first. Instant best friends-ready to hike, ride in the car or just sit in your lap and watch TV. 8. They leave you time to yourself because they don't require the kind of demands on your time that pups do to be entertained, played with and constantly watched. 9. Older dogs allow you to have a good nights sleep; they are more in tune with a schedule and most likely will not require nightly feedings, comforting or bathroom breaks. 10. And the most important reason, they deserve a second chance! Why should we breed and buy pups, when there are so many sweet and social older dog waiting for a new home. To adopt an older dog is good for them, and us! At APASA we have over 200 dogs looking for a new home, and here is a little selection of somewhat older dog. These dogs have completly different characters and it again proves that it is so much easier to choose between older dogs than puppies, that are often choosen for appearence, not character.

Rambo, male, 7 years. Rambo is simply brillant! He is the kind of dog that knows it all. People left him at the pound as they were moving back to their home country. He cried in his little kennel for days, and we decided to try him as an office dog, which means he lives in the office and can move around the pound all day. This worked! He is uncredibly social, listens well, is housetrained and does not need a lead at all. If you want a dog that you can take with you where ever you go, it is Rambo you need! He is not a big dog and would suit an older person. Senja, female, 10 years Senja used to live in a kennel & cattery, where all the dogs where allowed to live in a pack. She kept all newcomers in line and made sure there were never fights. But sadly her owner died, and Senja ended up at the dog pound. Such a sad story! Senja is very social and a natural pack leader. Dear Readers.. I hope you have all recovered from Christmas, New Year and the Three Kings… That’s really 3 solid weeks of Christmas atmosphere, and what amazing weather we have had all the way through…pretty amazing!! Last year we finished the year talking about dogs, cats, animals in general who become presents/toys for children and a few day/weeks later get dumped on the side of the road or taken to the local rescue center/shelter. Let’s hope that people have been more conscious and responsible in their decision to take on an animal. This year we are going to start with a letter written by one of Grapevine readers. Here we go… Dear Fleur /Grapevine We have a 8 year old cat , he seems to have a stress related problem , he urinates in the cupboard, on the table, by the kettle, on the fruit…everywhere. The house stinks...it’s horrible. We have taken the cat to the
vet and he has been checked thoroughly. The urine tests were negative, so the Veterinarian thinks it could be a stress related problem. After discussing the cat’s life and environment, we have realized that there is a new cat in the neighborhood that comes and goes, and he does seem to bully our cat. We have heard lots of growling and crying going on since he’s been around and our cat seems to be tense, always alert.. a little scatty…and sometimes when we go to pick him up he growls. He hasn’t been going out of the house as much either. We wondered whether you would have any suggestions ? Dear reader.. This does sound like stress issue related to the new cat in the neighborhood. It’s not very easy to deal with as you can’t really control the other cat, although you can control him coming into your garden, or coming into your cat’s territory. This is the main issue: Territory. Your cat feels that his territory has
been taken over and by a bully, so he is scared to fight back, or if he does fight back he gets beaten. This is basically what is stressing him out. You can scare the other cat away from your garden or territory with water whenever he is around squirt him with water. Cats don’t like water, and if you do this a few times he won’t come back. In the meantime I would highly recommend Bah Flower Remedies for the stress and anxiety your cat is going through. I have written previously about Bach Flower remedies, I will do a quick recap in case you didn’t read that article. Bach Flower remedies were discovered by Dr Edward Bach in the 1930’s. They are totally natural, without any harmful additives and nor do they have side effects.
