FROM THE PUBLISHER While distracted driving, helmet laws, and draconian insurance requirements are disturbing topics to many riders and the motorcycle industry as a whole, they pale in comparison to the one issue that keeps the folks in Milwaukee awake all night – our aging, and possibly shrinking riding community. It appears less and less folks are heading out onto the roads with two wheels. While the numbers can be challenged and the causes can be debated, it’s undeniable that less folks are heading out to buy the big v-twins that have powered our motorcycle culture here in the US. And unfortunately, this has caused many dealerships and those in the industry to cut back on their support of local rides and grass roots riding events – essentially anything off their property. Unfortunately, this change in heart is not only a fundamental mistake – it has also accelerated the decline which is strangling the domestic motorcycle industry in the first place. The cure? It’s simple – we just need to get more people riding. Forward thinking manufacturers and their dealerships will recognize that the simplest way to ensure that people are riding – is to give them more opportunities to ride. And that doesn’t mean more chili cook-off’s or bicycle stunt shows at the dealerships, which are cute and fun – but don’t really draw in more riders or get them out on their bikes riding with others. It means more of a focus on grass roots, local rides and other motorcycle driven events. Early on in our effort as a motorcycle magazine, we partnered with a member of a local AMA club and began producing a regional motorcycle events calendar. This was a 6-month calendar that featured virtually every charity ride, bike night, swap meet, and other two-wheeled (at the time) event going on in the area. For the local charities, it cost just a few dollars to get their event in the calendar. The calendars themselves were produced with the support of local motorcycle dealerships and other businesses – including car dealerships, insurance companies, restaurants, and even peanut shops. The proceeds from the calendars were donated in support of local charities – while the entire campaign worked to support the local motorcycle community. Today we help produce at least a half dozen of these local riding guides, most of which cover the same 6-7-month period; but are now in a more convenient pocketsized format. These little calendars allow riders to easily see what’s going on and serve as journals for many, allowing them to keep track of where they’ve been and how many miles they’ve logged – doing what they love, riding with friends. We’ve partnered with more AMA Clubs and several Veterans riding groups to produce these calendars across Ohio. We invest hundreds of hours more dollars than may make sense on the books to help support this effort, but we believe that the payoff is at least three-fold. Sure, we are recognized as sponsors of the calendars and it helps get our name out there. They also help promote dozens, if not hundreds, of local riding events across our region – and the charitable causes they support. More fundamentally, however, these little pocket guides help support the motorcycle community as a whole and the industry itself by getting people out RIDING! As I told a group of ride organizers in Columbus recently, we could rent a big billboard along the highway or send out yet more direct mail pieces to fill mailboxes and clutter the kitchen table before being thrown out – and we would get our name out there. It would be simpler, and possibly cost less than what we are doing. But the benefit would be negligible, as it would be the simplest of messages as well. More importantly, though, it would do NOTHING to promote riding itself.

If we want more riders and more people buying motorcycles – fancy new beasts or vintage bikes, we need to support the motorcycle community itself. We need to give more people, more reasons to get our and RIDE! The motorcycle community is an exciting, vibrant community – and it’s non-exclusive and easy to join. You just need a motorcycle and the occasion to ride with others. It’s that simple, but unfortunately many in the industry have forgotten these fundamental aspects of our two wheeled culture. Cleveland CycleWerks to unveil e-Bike

#FalconRising event set to introduce new concept for CCW and possibly break new ground for the industry. We have been longtime fans of Scott Colosimo, founder of Cleveland CycleWerks, and his motorcycles since before we even launched TRO. I should say that up-front. Anyone that has ever met Scott can attest to his passion for not only motorcycles – but for breaking barriers and trying new things. He brings a sense of energy and creativity, that is incredibly refreshing in this industry. He started CCW in 2009, which is essentially the same time we really took the plunge and went full time Iron Cowboy. We both launched out of Cleveland, but certainly Scott’s always been focused on a much larger stage.

If you’re not familiar with Cleveland CycleWerks, it’s a pretty cool story that is straight out of Cleveland. They design and manufacture small to mid-displacement motorcycles that bring a very basic and straightforward approach to riding. CCW bikes are designed to be both economical and fun to ride. They offer a handful of models that are by design – meant to be customized and made your own. Don’t get me wrong, they are cool little bikes from the get-go; but you can’t help but think of ways you can customize them. We’ve customized a THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

few of them over the years, and we have a custom Heist parked right outside my office. It is in fact the very first TRO bike we made, with a custom bobber tank, ape hangers, and a hand tooled leather seat that has our original emblem embossed upon it. It’s a cool bike that always gets a ton of attention at show – usually more than bikes that literally cost 3, 4, or even 10x as much. As I mentioned, Scott’s focus has always been on the world stage – even as he has always championed the CLEVELAND name and spirit of our city. The style and small displacement engines have resonated with Asian and Pacific markets and even European, more so than the big V-twin driven cruiser markets here in the US. So that’s where his sales have soared, even though the bikes are really a perfect fit for all the folks here jumping on the trendy custom vintage bandwagon.

platform grows with the rider as their skill and desire for speed increases.” Yeah, how cool is that?! The Falcon 01 and Falcon BLK can fit into several different categories from E-Bicycle to E-Motorcycle – based upon their configuration. Four Falcon Drive Modes – 1 Eco 2 Power 3 Custom 4 Wheelie + Angry Pixie Mode (20 seconds of MAX DISCHARGE, at the push of a button – “kinda like pure nitrous”) The Falcon is manufactured in the United States with over 60% US parts content. The bikes will be unveiled for the first time, anywhere, in Cleveland at the Crawford Auto Museum at 6:30pm – and Pre-Orders will start at 7pm that day. For more information visit ClevelandCycleWerks.com or check them out on social media.

Fast forward to today, as CCW prepares the next step in their evolution. On Friday, March 20th, Cleveland CycleWerks will unveil their newest bike – The Falcon, which they refer to as an “E-Mobility Platform”. They haven’t released a single image of this new bike, but they’ve leaked some snipits here and there of it and some of the totally unique approaches they’ve taken. I had the chance to talk with Scott a little about the bike, and I tell ya – I can’t wait to see it. I’m hesitant to jump into too much on the Falcon 01 and Falcon BLK as the new models are named, but I’ll share just a few tidbits here. As Scott explains – “We are no longer bound by the physical constraints of internal combustion. Our THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

THE IRON COWBOY HANOI JANE COMES TO OHIO

JANE FONDA TO BE HONORED BY KENT STATE UNIVERSITY AS PART OF 50th ANNIVERSARY MAY 4TH PROGRAM In a stunning move, which has rattled both Veterans and patriots from across the country, Kent State University announced on February 10th that they would have Jane Fonda as the featured speaker as part of their efforts to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of May 4, 1970. On that day, Ohio National Guard members fired on students during an anti-war protest, killing four and injuring nine others. The 82 year-old actress and activist will be the centerpiece of four days of events that KSU has planned Fonda, the daughter of actor Henry Fonda and sister to iconic Peter Fonda (Easyrider) was one of the most prominent figures of the anti-war movement and is certainly remembered as one of the most divisive. She allowed herself to be photographed atop a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun during a 1972 trip to Hanoi and made repeated broadcasts for the communists – some of which branded US Soldiers as War Criminals. It’s hard not to take exception to Kent State’s honoring of Jane Fonda – especially when it was revealed that they would be paying her over $80,000 for her appearance. To make matters worse, it would appear that there was little recognition or any consideration given to the actual Veterans that served in the conflict. These were men and women that answered the call to serve their country, regardless of politics.

battle. And we should say one thing to them: Welcome Home.” Ten days after the announcement and the ensuing outcry, Kent State’s 50th Commemoration Advisory Committee responded.

Over 2,709,000 Americans served in Vietnam and over 58,200 are listed as killed-in-action. Another 303,704 were wounded, with amputations and crippling injuries 300% higher than WWII and 70% higher than Korea. And it’s worth noting that draftees accounted for over 30% of the combat deaths. While certainly the deaths at Kent State are tragic, and worth considering. How do spend 2 years planning a program to focus on the events – without considering the actual Vietnam Veterans that served and REALLY had to sacrifice. And instead honor a person that essentially called for their death and crossed enemy lines to become a spokeswoman for a force that was actively attacking our servicemen. Even the Ohio Secretary of State, Frank LaRose, took a stance – calling on Kent State University to rescind its invitation. In a tweet, LaRose, who served for 10 years in the U.S. Army, wrote: “There’s still time to right this wrong @KentState - rescind your invitation to @JaneFonda. The anniversary of this tragedy is not the time to pay a speaker who betrayed our service members.” Continuing LaRose wrote, “The 50th anniversary of one of Ohio’s darkest days has the potential to serve as a moment of unity, understanding and healing in a nation that is deeply divided. However, Kent State’s decision to pay Jane Fonda $83,000 to speak at their commemoration event does the very opposite,” “I served 10 years in the US Army and eight years in the Ohio Senate before becoming Secretary of State. I certainly understand that people disagree on policy issues, especially matters of war — and that’s ok. What’s not ok is providing aid and comfort to the enemy and willfully serving as a propaganda tool for those engaged in hostilities against the United States. And Ms. Fonda did that — the very definition of treason.” “American service members coming home from Vietnam deserved a much better reception than the one they received. They weren’t the politicians who chose which battle to fight — they were the soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines sent into the 10

“We take to heart the painful feelings expressed by those for whom Fonda’s visit to Hanoi as a young activist in 1972 had a profound impact. We are equally moved by those who expressed their high regard for Fonda’s atonement after the incident and her lifelong activism in support of human rights and civil rights. “The Committee began its work nearly two years ago on the premise that diverse viewpoints have their place in our history and in the wide range of Commemoration programs activities and speakers that will be part of the weekend’s activities. “We remain mindful that Kent State occupies a special place among universities in America. We know firsthand the dire consequences of polarizing rhetoric and the positive outcomes that result when we work together to reconcile our differences through thoughtful reflection and productive discourse. “As the 50th Commemoration of May 4th approaches, we remain optimistic about the opportunity and responsibility we have to model for others the importance of reflecting on our past, learning from our mistakes and recognizing that tragedies borne of division have no place on a college campus or in a democracy.” It seems ironic that they would close with these comments. Clearly Kent State University and their 50th Anniversary Commemoration Committee has learned NOTHING from the past

and has FAILED to recognize that “tragedies borne of division have no place on a college campus..” as evidenced by their desire to create even more conflict and strife by bringing in such a polarizing speaker – especially with zero consideration for those that really sacrificed. Have an opinion – we’d love to hear it. Even if you disagree with us you can share your thoughts on the Blog, in the Magazines, or on our Social Media. We welcome the conversation. “As an American you have the right to believe whatever you like...you have right to vote for whom ever you like...you can be pro or anti war...what you have no right to do...is to go to a country we are at war with, sit in an anti aircraft battery and literally mention you hope Americans fly over so she can see the AA battery in use....that is crossing a line pretty sure our constitution would label treason...She’s no better than the American we caught fighting with the Taliban at the onset of the war on terror...difference he was not a celeb! I am sure her dad is rolling in his grave with all the support he gave our troops during WW2 with film and television. Vietnam was not a popular war for many reasons however American men and women went and did a job and received horrific treatment on their return including my father. So I take it bit personal a fellow citizen wishing death upon my family members! If Kent does not back down need a massive counter protest with bullhorns booing loud and clear! She does not even feel sorry for going too far... #hooah – R Needham, online comment

RIDE TO BE HEARD! IN SUPPORT OF OUR VIETNAM VETERANS Sunday, May 3, 2020 Festivities Begin 1pm, Ride Staging 5pm Kent American Legion Post 496 1945 Mogadore Road, Kent OH 44240 Born out of the outrage over Kent State Universities decision to honor Jane Fonda, the RIDE TO BE HEARD! Is a separate event and ride in honor of our veterans – especially those that served during the Vietnam Era. We want to bring enough RIDERS down to the Campus and through the streets of Kent so that the sound they hear and everyone else watching remembers is that of PATRIOTIC RIDERS honoring our Veterans, Remembering those that Sacrificed, and making it clear that we have NOT FORGOTTEN the stance she took. Maybe this can be a lesson for all those in Hollywood today that take similar positions - and speak out against our own nation. We want to include as many groups and riders as possible and make certain that everyone on campus - even inside the MAC Center can hear the ROAR of our engines and message it conveys! PLEASE NOTE: This is not a POLITICAL EVENT, supporting any party or candidates for office. This is a RIDE to support VETERANS, that have once again seemingly been forgotten. IF you represent a riding organization that would like to join-in and possibly help out - let us know. MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES All things Green… Green has always been a symbol of all things new and fresh. Green grass in the Spring, budding trees, flower shoots coming up through the cold ground of Winter’s chill. However, there’s another symbol that green stands for…GO! I’ve talked about going before, yet this time, it’s a bit different. Ever notice that we are always on the go. We can’t seem to sit still at all and if we do have a moment that we are sitting still, we are thinking about going! Why is that? Really the question should be ‘What is that?’ What is it that is driving us to have to move and go? Why is it that we cannot be still? You know the Bible says, ‘Be still and know that I am God.’ Psalm 46:10 in case you want to look it up. He wants us to be still even when we are moving. Why? So that in the stillness of His presence we can find strength. A person who is reliant on their own strength to maintain and get through life will eventually hit a wall that cannot be penetrated. No matter how much you try, or how much you deny, you will always need a strength that comes from somewhere other than yourself. It’s how we were created. It’s how we roll. It’s how our Heavenly Father called it to be. Why? What makes Him so special that we need to rely on His strength to make it through, you may ask. My granddaughter, all of 11 years old said that she felt God was a bit narcissistic in His behavior. That it’s all about Him and why should that be so? There’s a simple answer for that….without Him, we wouldn’t even be. There was a lot more discussion that ensued, but I think you get the picture.

COME RIDE WITH US! CMA is a servant minded interdenominational motorcycle ministry with a non-denominational message of hope and love through Jesus Christ. Enjoy the family atmosphere, make life-long friends, and join an army of people dedicated to changing the world, one heart at a time in the highways and byways. TRO welcomes the opportunity to work with established motorcycle ministries. Feel free to share upcoming events with us as well, by emailing information to Events.ThunderRoads@gmail.com

The point is, don’t get so far ahead in yourself that you forget to be still long enough for God to direct you the way He has planned out for you to go. I have said it before…He does have a plan. You just need to open your heart and eyes and sit still long enough for Him to speak with you about it. Once you get it… believe me, you will be on the GO! You won’t be able to hold back! Go can stand for so many things. Get Out! Get Over! Go On! Great One! Groovin’ On! Gifted One! Good One! Go Over! Grand Opening! But for me it stands for God Opens… Doors. Be still for a moment this month. Take time to listen for His voice. He really does want to talk to you. And while you are out and about, watch out for the Leprechaun in the grass….he’s looking for Gold Only…probably yours! We have Seasons of Refreshing on March 27-28th at the PicNaz Church in Pickerington! Come on over and visit us! Doors open Friday at 2pm, Saturday morning at 8am. We would really enjoy having you! KENNEDY STYLE

by: Denise Kennedy, TRO

2020 DAYTONA BIKE WEEK Looking at the calendar I am reminded that Daytona Bike Week is right around the corner. In addition to all the standard activities that are Bike Week I would again like to suggest a trip to the venues that are specific to racing motorcycles. The history of racing in the motorcycle community dates back to the early 1900’s. Early 20th century board-track racing of the 1910s and 1920s competition was conducted on oval or circular racetracks. Surfaces were composed of wooden planks and featured American V-twin motorcycles. For a glimpse into what was board-tracking racing consider taking in Billy Lane’s Sons of Speed. Held the first Saturday, March 7 of the rally at 5:00 p.m. at New Smyrna Beach Speedway just down the road from Cabbage Patch. Action should be fast paced at this half-mile, banked New Smyrna Speedway. Over the years, I have heard many riders surprised that motorcycle racing on the beach came long before there was an official rally. The first Daytona 200 was held in January 1937 on the 3.2-mile beach course. The rally came about in 1947 as promoters asked residents to open their homes to spectators that were now coming in throngs to see the beach race. Although the last race on the beach course was in 1960, at the urging of Bill France it moved to Daytona International Speedway the following year and it has been going strong ever since. The popularity of Motocross surged in the late 1960’s in the United States. Bill France added a professional motocross race to the 1971 Daytona Beach Bike Week schedule. This race will be held Saturday, March 7 in the area that is known as the tri-oval on Daytona International Speedway. Transforming this area into a firstclass motocross course is a huge undertaking and takes the better part of two weeks to be completed. For those interested in American Flat Track Racing, the 2020 Daytona Bike Week has got that covered as well. The Daytona TT/American Flat Track race will be part of a double header in conjunction with the Daytona 200 on Saturday, March 14, 2020. There is a something for everyone it what looks to be a jam-packed week.

Do you know a Vet that should recognized for their Military and Community Service? The Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame is seeking nominations to honor people who have continued to contribute to their communities after their military service. Nominees must be current or past Ohio residents who have been outstanding in volunteerism, advocacy, professional distinction, public service or philanthropy. Each year, the Hall of Fame inducts up to 20 former members of the U.S. Armed Forces based on recommendations from a statewide executive committee of veterans and approval by the Ohio governor. Nearly 900 veterans have been inducted since the hall’s 1992 inception. They include astronaut Neil Armstrong, actor Paul Newman and fast-food entrepreneur Dave Thomas. The state Department of Veterans Services encourages people to submit nominations before a deadline of June 1, 2020. You can find out more information and submit your nominations at dvs.ohio.gov/main/veterans-hall-of-fame.

Ride Guides and Calendars Support Local Veterans Thunder Roads Ohio and ReasonsToRide.com have teamed with Combat Vets Motorcycle Association, Units 12-1 and 12-7, to produce regional motorcycle event calendars with a focus on Veterans events and Veteran service organizations. These pocket guides include a comprehensive listing of both motorcycle and veteran oriented events being held from April through the end of the year. Proceeds from the Calendars go to support local veterans programs and are coordinated by the CVMA.

The Ride Guides and Calendars will include profiles on Veterans Organizations across Ohio! If you are involved in a Veterans organization – motorcycle or not – we’d encourage you to list any events that you might be hosting in the calendar. You’re also able to include a Directory Listing for your organization along with contact information. This is a GREAT way to get the word out and possibly connect with both Veterans and those interested in helping you with your mission.

OVER 10,000 of the Calendars will be distributed within each region – and they will be emailed out to over 200,000 Riders across Ohio! Veterans and grass roots non-profit organizations are able to list their events in the calendars for only $10-20 in most cases! The goal is to make these guides an extremely cost effective means of getting information out for the various charitable organizations out there – and this is only accomplished with the support of local business sponsors. We do charge slightly more for commercial event listings, and we welcome businesses and larger organizations to sponsor ad pages or possibly the calendar themselves. We believe that these are still very cost effective for the commercial organizations looking to reach both riders and Veterans – and we encourage you to help pass on the word to any companies or potential sponsors that you might know. For more information, please email Events@ThunderRoadsOhio.com Support the COMBAT VETS MA and Local Veteran’s Programs through Regional Motorcycle Events Calendars.

Spring is in full Swing! Hello!, and may I say to our TRO readers; Happy New Year! I trust you are getting off to a great start in 2020! It’s already March and according to Punxsutawney Phil, spring is going to be six weeks early! As for me, I have my plane ticket in hand and a Spyder rental on hold to attend a Spyder Ryde in Globe, Arizona the first week of April. I hope to share a couple of photos and write about that experience for the April issue. Locally, riding season is gearing up in many ways. For starters, the Greater Akron Motorcycle Group held their annual meet and greet at Buffalo Wild Wings in Medina to compile the 2020 event calendar. The Greater Akron Area Motorcycle events calendar is the most comprehensive resource pocket guide to reference rides, bike nights, and benefits around the Great Akron area. 10,000 guides are distributed through sponsors and partners throughout the state of Ohio by Thunder Roads Ohio. It will be available online by April 1 and distributed digitally to more than 250,000 motorcycle enthusiasts. Over the winter, motorcycle groups have been busy working and fervently planning to offer rides that support various charities and community needs. It’s going to be a year packed full of ride opportunities to support these fine organizations. Events@ReasonsToRide.com

Bikers for Boobs is in need for volunteers. If your group, club or organization is interested in volunteering at the Bikers for Boobs event, your group will receive a free T-shirt and free meal. If you are part of a group, club, or organization and volunteer together with your group of 10 or more, your group, club or organization name will be put on the event T-shirt. TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES

MARCH UPDATE!

The Bike Show Series

Over the last several years, Thunder Roads Ohio has worked to develop the TRO Championship Bike Show Series as a means of showcasing both the rides that our readers have and the amazing works of rolling art that local shops and builders have been producing in an informal, fun format. Along the way, we discovered that many local riders had never participated in a Bike Show – never considering that their bikes were “show worthy”. It turns out though, that most riders have an appreciation – even a love of motorcycles that goes beyond the amount of chrome on a bike or if there are water spots and dust on them. We’ve hosted Bike Shows at indoor venues showcasing bikes with less than a dozen miles on them – and we’ve hosted Bike Shows at outdoor venues ranging from dealership parking lots to grass fields with countless entries still hot from riding in from across the state! Throughout, we’ve discovered that it’s not always the most polished that gets the attention, but it’s the love and work that goes into the bike that everyone appreciates. Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, we encourage everyone to participate and have fun with the shows! Chances are that you’ll discover a greater appreciation for what makes your bike unique and meet some other folks with a similar passion. And we’re certain you’ll have a blast! The TRO Bike Show Series features local, regional, and nationally recognized shows that all builders and bike owners are welcome to participate in. Vintage, metric, v-twin, customs, restored antiques, “resto-mods”, trikes, and radicals are all welcome to the show. These shows are RIDE-IN shows, meaning the bikes are expected to be ridden and a little bit of road dust is fine. We don’t split hairs over trailering in bikes, but we do require that all bikes must be functioning. They must start and be able to be safely ridden on the road. Most of the shows include voting by event attendees and weighted judges scores. We use this approach to make certain we include both the “popular opinion” and an objective review of the bikes. Interested in coming out? It’s easy! Just visit us online at ThunderRoadsOhio.com and you can register for whichever show you’d like. By Pre-Registering, you are locking in your spot, saving a few dollars, and you’ll even get a FREE T-Shirt!

NEW SHOWS ADDED XDL FREE RIDE FEST Friday, June 26th – Sunday, June 28th Muni Lot, Cleveland OH Thunder Roads Ohio is teaming up with the XDL Championship Series to bring a Bike Show to downtown Cleveland as part of FREE RIDE FEST 2020! This is going to be a blast along the shoreway, as we present custom motorcycles and vintage racers with all the high-octane excitement of Freestyle Riding Competitions and Live Music! IRON PONY Bike Show Saturday, July 25th Iron Pony Motorsports, Columbus OH This will be the 3rd year that we bring our ride-in bike show series to Iron Pony and it’s already become well established as one of our most diverse and exciting shows. This year will be placing additional focus on the Vintage categories – with several new categories being introduced. Indian Motorcycle will also be on site with their Demo Trucks, so folks will have a chance to both admire some classic rides and ride some cutting edge new bikes – all at the same event! How cool is that?! Fink’s Harley-Davidson Bike Show Saturday, August 15th Fink’s Harley-Davidson, Zanesville OH The Fink’s Bike Show was one of the highlights of the 2019 Series, with a packed lot showcasing a wide variety of bikes. We had custom touring, cool café’s, and one of the most unique Rat Bikes we saw all year! We can’t wait to return! Resurrection Island Tattoo Convention / Motorcycle Rally Saturday, September 5th Wheeling Island Hotel / Casino, Wheeling WV We are excited to head over to this area along the Ohio River, bridging West Virginia and Southeastern Ohio. There will be a wide range of activities for everyone to enjoy with the Tattoo Convention, Live Music, Vendors, and plenty of unique things to see and do! And oh, yeah – there’s a Casino there too!

Sport Touring Corner By Norm Kern, TRO Contributor

“Should I buy

Why use a GPS when we ride?

I've spent more than half of my fifty plus years of riding using paper maps and thought that I did just fine. County maps showed every road but were too big and unwieldy to use on the bike, so I used state roadmaps. I tended to stick with the roads on them because they were easier to follow, mixing in a few locals roads from time to time.

It's database contains millions of cities, points of interest, food, fuel and other searchable locations, a level of detail no paper map can show. That's a lot of advantages over paper, but a GPS does something far more powerful- Routing. There are three levels of GPS routing: • Level 1- Get from where you are (point A) to point B- this is what most people are familiar with and use their GPS for.

That, however, changed big time once I learned to really use a GPS. I do not mean the vanilla “from here to a destination” point to point routing that Google Maps can do. I mean more complicated routes where it's not just the destination, but the individual roads traveled that are what's important. With GPS, I discovered lots of new fun roads which are not numbered and not particularly easy to follow without a GPS. An added huge bonus was that most of these back roads were free of traffic. GPS allowed me to get completely lost with absolutely no worries about finding my way back, finding gas, finding food, etc. I could also keep track of my time by directing the GPS to Go Home and wander around until the arrival time matched the time I needed to be back. A GPS gives the rider a pretty good idea of what the road is about to do ahead. I am rarely surprised by hairpins or unexpected turns like those on the roads of southeast Ohio. What does a GPS do for you that a paper map does not?

• Level 2- Multi-point routing with stops at points of interest, gas, food etc. • Level 3- Multi-point routing with all of the above plus "shaping" or via points that force the route to follow specific ROADS. Level 3 routing enables route creators to direct you on the enjoyable and interesting back roads that make sport touring the most fun style of motorcycle riding. That brings us to our next question. What GPS features do you need for use on a motorcycle? Here's my list • The device must be able to download and use multi-point routes. My favorite rides snake around from one good road to another. I need a device that is able to do that. • The device must have a large screen that is easy to read. • It must be waterproof. • The device must be glove friendly.

• It shows you where you are on the map

• Complete maps database must be stored on the device so it will still work when phone service and WiFi are not available.

• What direction you are going

• Being shock resistant is a priority.

• Keeps the map centered on where you are

• It must provide voice prompts that can be linked to a Bluetooth helmet headset.

• Allows you to zoom in to show every individual road including name info.

• Swapping rides with friends must be quick and easy. The GPX file format is an open standard and is most commonly used.

• You don't have to refold it, keep it dry, etc. • Turn-by-turn voice prompts and graphic displays make navigation through complicated urban areas easier. 2003-03.jpg 24 24

THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE THUNDER

• It must be easy to remove from the bike. If integrated, it must easily transfer route and track files back and forth between the bike and the computer.

Why not use a smartphone as a GPS? Pros & cons The deal breaker used to be that phone apps did not support complex multi-point routes. There are now a couple available for both iPhone and android that overcome that limitation. Many now have screens that are large and bright enough but to run a GPS app all day with the screen on full brightness requires external power. Many are waterproof- Unfortunately the USB connector used for charging is not. I find that after the connected phone has been in the rain for awhile, a message pops up that the cable or charger is defective. This blocks my view of the screen and cannot be dismissed. It can take several hours of effort in the hotel room to dry the connector enough that it will take a charge again.

map as a verification that the route was interpreted correctly by the GPS. Very powerful. • Comes with complete motorcycle handlebar mount and wiring harness • Comes with free lifetime map updates My zumo 590 links to my phone via Bluetooth and can access the internet via phone data network to support lots of features, all integrated right into the excellent GPS screen:

There's another problem with the screen in the rain- water droplets hitting it are like button presses and it becomes uncontrollable. Checking weather radar is important during a rainstorm, but that's exactly when you can't access it on your phone! Most phone apps default to using online maps, so you have to be sure you download the maps you need before venturing out so you still have a map when you are out of cel data range. Phones are not inherently glove friendly, so you need specialized gloves. A related problem is that most phone apps lack large text and glove-friendly buttons. On the plus side, searching for addresses, gas, hotels, places to eat is easier and much better on the phone because data is more up to date.

1. Live traffic, including delays ahead, estimated time delays, alternate routes, even live traffic cameras 2. Live weather forecasts, including live weather along your route, live weather radar on the GPS map 3. Search for locations etc just like Waze and other apps on your phone and send to the zumo 590.

The biggest advantage of a smartphone is the fact that most people already have one. They use it for everything else so they just download a GPS app and they are good to go. Garmin zumo GPS models Zumo is simply Garmin's trade name for their line of motorcycle GPS units. Zumo units have become the standard of the industry and I much prefer to use one of them rather than a smartphone. Here's why: • MUCH more reliable than a phone. • Completely waterproof. • Rugged touch screen designed to work with gloves.

To sum up: You can buy the Garmin zumo 396 for $250 or less. It has all the features of the top-of-the-line 595, just a smaller screen. I have both my phone and zumo GPS mounted on my bike for the best of both worlds.

• Glove-friendly icons, buttons etc. Text larger, readable from 18" away on the handlebar. • Tracks from the day's ride can be named and saved. • Easily handles complex routes with many via points. • Garmin Basecamp software can create a track from a route. The track can be loaded into the zumo and displayed on the

REGIONAL RIDE MAPS! First introduced in 2019, Regional Ride Maps focus on a particular area or theme and usually include 15-20 Ride Stops for riders to hit. Generally, it’s something that can be knocked out in a weekend, maybe even a single day of hard riding – or some might take a little longer, such as a trip around the state hitting microbreweries or veterans themed stops. The idea is to make a cool, fun ride that can be “completed” in a more limited amount of time. Once you hit all the stops – you simply send back the checklist, which you can easily do with your phone or old school with the mail. Either way – once we get the form and it’s verified – you’re in the running for a $500 Grand Prize and over 100 other prizes! It’s that easy!

2020 Regional Ride Maps will include – Akron / Canton area, Cleveland, Columbus, Ohio Bike Week, Geneva / Erie, Northwest Ohio & Southeastern Ohio (Email us if you’d like to recommend a stop in these areas.)

How do you Start? (It's really simple!)

MECUM 2020

“Greenie” brings home the most “Green” ever for a Knucklehead. Dave Eggert, TRO Contributor This year marked the the 19th year of the Mecum Auction in Las Vegas. It's the world’s largest vintage and antique motorcycle auction in the world. Held each year at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas Nevada, the auction has grown to legendary proportions bringing together buyers, sellers and the greatest collection of desirable motorcycles on the planet. The auction covers 5 days and close to 2,000 motorcycles will cross the auction block. Admission is $20 presale or $30 on site and covers all 5 days. This years auction was held January 21st-26th. The event has grown into a family reunion or sorts for the vintage and antique collectors, buyers, sellers and restoration aficionados. With something for everyone, covering both English and metrics its really quite an amazing sight. You can see all types of motorcycles including dirt bikes, cruisers and race bikes. Its both a gallery, and a museum of bikes, except if you have enough money in your pocket you can take any one of these beauties home with you. Winning bids range from several hundred dollars, to several hundred thousand dollars. Many bikes are sold without a reserve price.

Many of these bikes for up for auction carry with them monumental amounts of history. My personal favorite was the 1940 Harley-Davidson EL Knucklehead, commonly known as “Greenie”. This bike is considered the finest original paint, most complete and documented 1940 EL in the world. It has the distinction of being the bike that started the original paint craze. In 1971 Payne “Pappy” Pierce took this bike in as an even trade on a new Sportster at his Illinois Harley Davidson Dealership. At the time, before the prewar Knucklehead craze, that was actually a very lopsided trade in favor of the new Sportster owner! This bike caused a large rift in the restoration community, including the AMCA. Many restorers and restoration organizations believed that a quality restoration had to use the sales brochure as the reference point to build by. If it was in the brochure, that’s how it should be. As it turns out, Harley Davidson was making custom bikes from 1926 on. In fact custom bikes were the norm from 1926 until 1942, not the exception. Most of the bikes sold looked very different from the sales brochure.

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

The literature for each year was actually a guide as to what could be, not a rule on what it should be. For example, most of the ELs that year were chromed. This particular bike was ordered with nickel plating. The color of the original paint was “Hollywood Green” which was not a stock color. The bike was ordered and customized that way. Through research and documents, very valuable information was learned about this bike and how Harley Davidson operated in the early years. Much of the information from this time period about Harley Davidson was destroyed in a records fire, lost, or just never written down. Of interesting note, is that when Harley Davidson ran out of chromed rims for some builds they would substitute a painted one. You would get a brand new bike with two different kinds of rims. If they ran out of the current year date stamped transmission they would substitute a prior years version. This was very common, particularly after the war when parts and materials were in very limited supply. Harley Davidson did what they had to do to keep the production of bikes moving to meet the growing demand for their motorcycles.

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

When you take into account the pure beauty of this original paint bike, the rich history that it brings with it. and its place and stature in the collecting world it holds, its no wonder that “Greenie” has the distinction of selling for the highest priced Knucklehead at auction ever. It hammered for $200,000 plus a buyers premium raising the price to $220,000. Thats just the story of one bike. Each of these bikes has its own and unique story. Oh if they could talk…the stories they could tell.

Like a Good Neighbor Is your club a good neighbor, or are you a bad neighbor? No, I’m not talking about geographically, I’m talking about mentally. We all know the MC Culture of “owning territory”. Everyone is possessive with regard to their areas. No, it’s not because most of them are protecting their illegal enterprises in their “hood”. Every street thug in every neighborhood is offering those services without any regard to any MC or otherwise. It’s primarily done to protect recruiting. You can’t all be in the same neighborhood or sometimes even the same City and be competing for membership or support. So how does your club handle it when a new club wants to move into the area? Do you immediately run them off with a Big Fat “NO”? I’ve seen this done in many a city or county. Do you know what that gains your club? Not a damn thing. No chance of future recruitment. No Chance of Support at your events. If you are the perceived “Dominant” of an area it means that you have earned the respect of other clubs. So why would you tell every new club that wants to do their thing No? Ah yes, it goes back to that territory thing. But what if in your conversation with said new club, you simply asked for them to show your club the respect you’ve earned, and not set up camp on the same reservation. But if they will be in

the community, for them to come and show some support. I didn’t say “own them” or “brand them” I said make them feel welcome so that they will support your club. Nobody wants to feel like they are owned. You cannot “Demand” support and expect it to be genuine or long lasting. But you can request support and if you treat Men like Men, with Dignity, they will respect and support you. Hell, some of them may even want to Be You! That is how you sustain a nation. Not with Wars. Not with ridiculous demands. With Respect. Most of those guys have absolutely no idea what the MC Life is actually about. Yes, 90% of them will fail within the first 1-2 years. Teach them the ways of proper protocols. From them you might find new worthwhile brothers for your nation. You might nurture a future club that wants to wear your clubs support or affiliate patch. You may even find a friend or a new resource you didn’t know before. The next time “Larry and his 5 buddies” want to start their own RC out of their garage or tattoo shop and come to your club out of respect for your approval, I’d suggest you encourage them. Teach them. Welcome them. Gain Support from them, sustain your future from them.. Bea good neighbor. My Road Name is Tabasco, keep it Real! Tabasco.tro@gmail.com

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT When the Criminal Doesn’t Obey Your Commands

It’s a rewarding thing to watch my firearms students as they learn and progress. They start with safe gun handling skills, the basics of marksmanship, and learning when it is legally appropriate to shoot someone. If they continue training, they might learn more “tactical” or combative shooting skills. As their abilities improve, they might move on to more scenariooriented classes using role players armed with Simunition or airsoft guns. During the scenario-oriented classes I teach, students often have the most problems with verbal interactions rather than physical skills. This holds true in both unarmed fighting classes

and classes focused on weapon use. Students’ physical skills (either shooting or fighting) are usually good enough that they can “win” the scenarios I create. Where they falter is in the area of verbal interaction. Students have three basic problems with verbal interaction during the pre-attack phase of a crime about to be committed: 1) They don’t have adequate experience communicating assertively or aggressively. Society rewards people who are compliant and go with the flow. Loud, aggressive, and dominant language is discouraged among civilized people. How many times have you

Our family of highly effective pro-gun organizations includes Buckeye Firearms Association, Buckeye Firearms Foundation, and Buckeye Firearms Association PAC. Buckeye Firearms Association (BFA) is a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization that serves as the flagship of our grassroots efforts to defend and advance the right of citizens to own and use firearms for all legal activities, including self-defense, hunting, competition, and recreation. BFA works to pass pro-gun legislation, educate the public through ongoing media relations, provide high-quality firearm classes, and make available a wide variety of resources for gun owners. While anti-gun groups get their funding and support from wealthy activists or big corporations, BFA gets its funding and support from citizens like you who value their Constitutional rights. buckeyefirearms.org 40 40

heard a parent scold their child by saying “Use your INSIDE voice?" We just don’t get much practice being aggressive in our daily lives. 2) Auditory exclusion kicks in. Under most stressful circumstances, the brain has to prioritize the vast amount of data that it is processing. In most cases, priority will be given to information provided by our sight. Hearing things becomes more difficult as sight is prioritized. Students regularly report that they hear their attackers’ voices sounding like the “Wah Wah Wah” sounds of Charlie Brown’s teacher. They know the attacker is saying something but just don’t have the brain power to devote to listening. It’s hard to communicate assertively if you aren’t picking up the words your attacker may be using. 3) The student’s ego gets involved. This one happens primarily when the attacker either insults the defender or fails to obey the defender’s verbal commands. When either of these things happen, the student often becomes enraged. They stop thinking and get caught up in an ever-escalating yelling match with the criminal. Some criminals will even bait their victims into this escalation game. They know that if they can enrage the victim, he or she is less likely to think clearly. OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE MAGAZINE OHIO’S

The first two problems are relatively easy to deal with. Assertive communication can be taught and practiced. Auditory exclusion can be reduced through the “stress-inoculation” effects of repeated scenario training. It’s the third problem that I have the most difficulty rectifying. I still remember a retired Colonel in the US Army who came through one of my scenario training classes at TDI. The Colonel was confronted with the scenario of finding an unarmed drunk man in his house at night. The scenario was supposed to simulate an event where an intoxicated person stumbled into the wrong house by mistake. The Colonel, who was an excellent shooter and tactician, pointed his gun at the intruder and ordered him to leave the house. It was a very good judgement call as the “drunk’ was not acting threatening in any way. The fun started when the drunk man refused to leave, saying words to the effect of “Chill out dude. It’s all cool. You don’t need to resort to violence. Come on, I’ll get you a beer.” The Colonel verbally escalated. The drunk just stayed calm and mellow, but refused to leave. The situation became even more heated and the Colonel started yelling. His face was red and he was shaking. He wasn’t scared. He was pissed! The Colonel just wasn’t used to people disobeying his direct orders. He didn’t have a mental map of what he should do because in his experience as a high ranking military officer, people always did exactly what he told them to do.

Unfortunately, criminals aren’t the best listeners…even when they have a gun pointed at their faces. I’ve lost count of how many times a criminal has disobeyed my lawful commands even as a uniformed police officer. I once had a domestic violence suspect try to physically attack me while I was holding him at gunpoint with a shotgun and ordering him to get down on the ground. It’s actually quite common. I’ll bet most of you haven’t really thought about the issue. A prefect example is the case where an 11year old shot a fleeing burglar who refused the command to stop. What a mess. It was clearly an unjustified shooting. The burglar posed no threat to the kid and was running away. The kid shot 12 9mm bullets at the guy and hit him with one. Where did the others go? Will they prosecute an 11 year old kid? I doubt it. Would they prosecute an adult for doing the same thing? You can bet on it. You can’t just shoot someone because they aren’t following your commands. What if you confronted a criminal at gunpoint? You order him to the ground. He doesn’t comply, but he doesn’t try to draw a weapon or close the distance on you in any way. What would you do? Shoot him? I think the best answer is “no”. As surprising as it sounds, I’ve seen many instances in training where as student gets more and more agitated with the role player’s noncompliance and then just shoots the role player out of sheer frustration. As the student gets

ever more enraged at the role player’s audacity in ignoring commands, higher order thought processes become harder to perform. My guess is that’s what happened in the case with the 11year old linked above. If the student was calm, he might be able to think about an alternate solution. That doesn’t work so well when the student is angry. Don’t let your ego interfere with your safety. EXPECT the criminal to ignore your commands and have a backup plan for when it happens. Don’t get angry. Don’t allow the criminal to manipulate you by challenging your ego. I’ve seen it happen in both real life and in training. The results are not pretty. Mentally program yourself right now. Expect criminal non-compliance. Think through your options. If the criminal doesn’t comply, but doesn’t escalate, you generally have a little time to act. At first indication of such an experience, either use the opportunity to escape or transition to another, more appropriate, weapon. Don’t get angry and do something you might regret in the future. March is here, and spring is right around the corner! I have been working on sorting out some issues with a late 70's Goldwing that had been in storage for a few years. In last months article, I wrote about cleaning the carbs and finding a damaged tube in the accelerator pump circuit. Since then I have received the rebuild kit and I began reassembling the carbs. Other than the melted tube, when I cleaned the carbs I did not find any major problems, or clogs inside the passages. While it is not mandatory to find a problem when cleaning the carbs, it is nice to know you found the issue, otherwise you are just guessing about having it fixed. Sometimes you are just left with a guess. While I didn't find and exact problem, I did discover that someone had decided to cover all the sealing surfaces, including the o-ring, in silicone. They didn't even do and even job of it!! Please do not ever do this! Not only is it an extremely hack repair, but gasoline breaks down almost any silicone, so sooner or later it will begin to leak or the silicone will fall apart and get stuck inside a passage in the carburetor. Hopefully I was able to get it all off of, and out of, the carburetors. Once all the seals came in, I began reassembly. One of the major problems I discovered on reassembly, was that the floats on one side were set entirely to high. This could have lead to one side being starved for fuel at high engine speeds or sustained hard throttle. Since these were carbs off a newer engine, I had to use goldwingdocs.com for reference info. This is an excellent resource for anything Goldwing related. If you can think it up, the answers are on that website. Not only did I find the original setting and jet sizes for the carbs, but I also found the appropriate information for dealing with someone else's carb swap, like what happened on this bike.

Phillips bits. Hopefully I will be able to use ball end Allen wrenches and install them at off angles. If this works, It could be a game changer in Goldwing carb service. Check out next months article for the report of how the install went. Knoble Moto is a partner of Skidmark Garage. We teach classes for the DIY crowd, on all aspects of motorcycle repair. Entry level maintenance, valve adjustments, carburetor cleaning and tuning, drive line service, suspensions, and even engine work. Our class subjects are updated regularly, so check back often. If there is a subject you do not see covered, shoot me an email at knoblemoto@ gmail.com Find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/knoblemoto, Instagram Knoble_Moto and www.KnobleMoto.com

During reassembly, I also stumbled across some unique o-rings that were made from a rectangle shaped material. I did find replacement parts online, but if necessary, I could have order replacement o-rings from and industrial supply catalog. So once I collected all the o-rings, I reassembled the carbs and then I bench synced the carbs. This involved checking all the throttle plates with gauge pins, and feeler gauges to ensure that they are all set to the same angle, so they open at the same angle. I then set all the idle air bleed screws, to the same exact point. I then re-split the carbs and disconnected the linkage, to see if I can reassemble the carbs and manifolds in two pieces inside the motorcycle. This is because you are supposed to assemble the carbs as one whole unit, then install them on the bike. The problem is that they do not fit into the frame and engine without taking a few small parts off the carbs. I am hoping to easily reinstall the carbs and manifolds as two separate pieces, and then reattach it all on the bikes. I am planning on using Allen screws instead of the OEM

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...

Two Irish drunks are walking home after a little too much celebration on St Patrick's Day. As they stumbled up the country road in the dark, Paddy says, "Bejeesus, Mick, we've stumbled into the graveyard and here's the stone of a man lived to the age of 103!" Mick replies, "Glory be, Paddy and was it anybody we knew?" Paddy says, "No, it was someone called 'Miles from Dublin'." A man walked into a bar on St. Patrick's Day and started ordering martini after martini. With each drink, he removed the olives and put them in a jar. When the jar was filled with olives and he'd finished all the drinks, the man started to leave. As he did so, a curious customer asked him, "Excuse me, but what was that all about?" "Nothing really," replied Paddy, "My wife just sent me out for a jar of olives." Why can't you borrow money from a leprechaun? Because they're always a little short.

RECIPES

Corned Beef in Guinness

Pizza Roll-Ups

Serves 6 (or 3 hungry bikers)

Makes about 12

1 bottle Guinness beer (or other stout beer - or you can use beef stock)

1 can pizza crust (you can use fresh or frozen dough) 1 cup of a mix of diced toppings (pepperoni, sausage, bacon, ham, bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, etc.)

1 cup beef stock

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

2 tbsp brown sugar

1 cup pizza sauce ¼ cup parmesan cheese

3 1/2 pound uncooked brisket for corned beef, rinsed well and patted dry

Heat oven to 375°F. Coat a baking sheet with cooking spray.

1/2 onion

Spread or unroll dough into a flat work space into about a 10 x 12 inch rectangle

1 head garlic, halved

1 tbsp pickling spice

1 head cabbage, sliced

Using a spatula or back of a spoon, spread a VERY light layer (approx 3-4 tbsp) of pizza sauce over the entire surface leaving about 1 inch on the top uncoated

4-5 carrots, cut into 3/4-inch chunks 1 lb of red potatoes, cut into 3/4-inch chunks

Evenly sprinkle your toppings and cheese over the sauce, then starting at the bottom end, gently begin rolling the crust up towards the top

Preheat oven to 300. In a large oven safe pot (I use a cast iron dutch oven), stir together the beer, stock, brown sugar, pickling spice, onion and the garlic.

Wrap in cellophane and refrigerate for 30 minutes Remove from cellophane and using a sharp knife, cut into 1 inch slices (using a moistened knife will help) and place on baking sheet the sprinkle with parmesan cheese

Place in the brisket and bring to a simmer but don’t elt it boil – it makes a mess

Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown, serve hot with the remaining pizza sauce

Once it begins simmering, cover the pot and place in oven to roast for 2-3 hours, flipping meat once during halfway point. Add in the vegetables and allow to continue cooking covered for another 2-3 hours or until the meat is fork tender

Have a recipe that you’d like to share? Write it all down and send with a picture – to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Put RECIPE in the subject line. If we use it, we’ll send you copies of the magazines and a TRO T-Shirt – so include your address and t-shirt size as well! Thanks! - The Iron Cowboy

TRO SCAVENGER HUNT The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail. com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?!
