The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is a leading light among American music festivals. Launched in 1999, it set the bar for events of this type. Since then, Coachella

has drawn the cream of the music crop. More Latin and electronic dance artists or DJs comprised this year’s lineup than ever before.

Weekend 2 of the 2023 edition was toplined by Bad Bunny and BLACKPINK

Blink-182, a last-minute addition the prior weekend, replaced Frank Ocean who cancelled due to injury on the Coachella Stage. Skrillex, Four Tet and Fred Again closed everything out with a late-night DJ set.

Well, In The Desert Gala

Story and photos by Pat Krause

Well in the Desert held its Broadway Under The Stars event at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort on April 23rd. The event benefited Well in the Desert; the evening started with a cocktail hour where Denise Motto provided music and songs. Matt Naylor spoke to the guests about the programs of Well in the Desert. He said they provided 70,000 meals a year to people experiencing homelessness. Naylor spoke about the other programs Well in the Desert offers. He said Founder Arlene Rosenthal could not attend because she was hospitalized.

Naylor asked the guests to pray for her quick recovery.

The event honored Jeannie Cunningham. She is a singer, songwriter, composer, arranger, producer, and author. She has worked with famous music artists and has made 7 CDs. You may know her as JaeCie. She spoke about how so many deserving people do fantastic work for charities. She mentioned many names associated with charities that work with animal rights, save the planet, mentorship, and Homelessness. She mentioned Arlene Rosenthal and Matt Naylor, who has accomplished so much in our Valley to help the homeless. She was given a painting and said she was thankful to be honored to be

Fire At Disneyland!

During the live show, “Fantasmic!” a dragon figure about 14 meters high suddenly burned ablaze on Saturday evening (local time), several US media reported. Videos on the net showed a burning dragon and loudspeaker announcements that ended the performance “due to unforeseen circumstances.”

Luck in the misfortune: There were no injuries, reported the station “ABC 7” concerning the fire department. There was initially no information on the damage caused. Disney itself did not comment at first. A witness said that employees evacuated the area after the fire broke out, but the rest of the park remained open.

The attractions at the

Anaheim site just outside Los Angeles are a tourist magnet. Disney fire-at-Disney describes “Fantasmic!” as a nighttime show with special effects and “awesome pyrotechnics.”

The show is a journey through the imagination of Mickey Mouse, he said. Disney’s famous character fights several villains in it, including the firebreathing dragon Maleficent.

Fuerza Regida’s “Otra Peda Tour” comes to Acrisure Arena

Palm Springs, CA. One of the most critical urban Mexican acts of the moment, Fuerza Regina, continues driving unstoppable momentum in 2023, today announcing the series of show dates that will form its highly anticipated “Otra Peda Tour” which will bring the group and urban Mexican music to new cities and iconic venues.

Fuerza Regida will bring its tour to Acrisure Arena, Southern California’s newest 11,000-capacity world-class venue in Greater Palm Springs, on Saturday, November 18.

Fuerza Regida and Live Nation are continuing their tour production partnership.

“Fuerza Regida has been a huge example of this new movement’s power globally,” said Jorge Garcia, Global Touring Promoter, Live Nation. “It has been an honor to see their rapid growth from arena to stadium shows as a trusted partner.”

Kicking off 2023 with its first #1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart, “Bebe Dame” alongside Grupo Frontera, March quickly proved to be one of the most significant months in Fuerza Regida’s

already outstanding career. Most notably, the band accomplished an impressive feat, selling out the inaugural date of the “Otra Peda Tour” at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles (previously known as Banc of California Stadium), which is unquestionably a career-defining moment for the group, as it marks the first time that Fuerza Regida will perform live in a stadium.

In addition to the news that it sold out its first stadium show, the band also released ten new music videos in March, including the hits “Dijeron Que No La Iba a Lograr” and “Que Se Te Quito.” Together these ten clips have accumulated over 50 million streams on YouTube, proving once again that this California-based group is one of the most popular and indemand Latin music acts on the market today. Furthermore, the month brought other exciting news with the announcement of six new Latin American Music Awards nominations, including Best Regional Mexican Duo or Group, Song of the Year for “Bebe Dame” with Grupo Frontera, and Best Regional Mexican Album for the massively successful project

“Del Barrio Hasta Aquí, Vol 2.”

All these incredible new milestones succeeded in a remarkable 2022, a year during which the band realized the extraordinary 19-date “Del Barrio Hasta Aquí” tour, 12

of which were sold out within days of being announced, in addition to releasing 22 singles and two new albums, “Pa Que Hablen” and “Sigan Hablando,” which have garnered more than 517 million streams to

date on Spotify alone.

Preserving Biodiversity Through Sustainable Development

Many industries around the globe are prioritizing sustainable development to ensure a healthy planet for the future.

For the Mexican avocado industry, success depends on conserving natural resources, soil, forests, and water, which is why it is working to reduce its impact to protect the natural environment. One important priority is supporting biodiversity –the variety of plants and animals in one region or ecosystem – through environmentally friendly and responsible practices.

Most Mexican Hass

avocados exported to the U.S. begin their journey in Michoacán, Mexico, an area known for its flourishing ecosystem. The Mexican avocado industry, including APEAM and MHAIA, are committed to preserving and enhancing biodiversity and promoting sustainable development and forest conservation by:

Protecting Pollinators: Bees and wild pollinators like butterflies are essential to ensuring avocado trees have the resources and support to grow. Avocado orchard production increases by 25% when pollinators are present, and 80% of Mexican avocado production is due to pollinators.

On top of that, about 30% of avocado orchards in Michoacán have added beehives or work with local beekeepers to rent beehives to increase the presence of bees on the farms. Avocado farmers also use plant- and flower-friendly agrochemicals at the right time when pollinators aren’t active.

Through its partnership with Forests For Monarchs,

MHAIA has planted more than 1.2 million trees to protect the environment and reforest the area close to the reserve of the monarch butterfly, a crucial native pollinator in Mexico.

Maintaining Habitats

Through Forest Preservation: APEAM’s efforts to preserve more

than 1.3 million acres of the “Avocado Strip” includes preventing and responding to fires, creating a biological corridor, and researching sustainable developments for soil and water. In addition, the industry has supported planting nearly 2.9 million trees throughout Michoacán.

Water Conservation:

Water use is also critical; approximately 61% of the avocado orchards in Michoacán rely on rainfall and natural irrigation. Another 36% utilize sustainable irrigation. Learn more about the avocado industry’s sustainability practices at avocadoinstitute. org. Family Features

Consumer Groups Question Bill to Regulate Car Sales

Dina Rivera

Consumer groups are calling for changes to a proposed bill - needed to ensure drivers can continue getting free computer upgrades to repair serious car safety issues remotely. One of the provisions of Assembly Bill 473 would forbid car manufacturers from competing with car dealers regarding sales or service.

Rosemary Shahan, president of Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety, said the measure could have unintended consequences.

“So it’s a concern that it could be construed to mean

that consumers could no longer get over-the-air repairs from the manufacturer. They’d have to take their car into the dealership, “ she said. Over-the-air fixes are software updates that can be done remotely by the manufacturer. Other sections of the bill prevent manufacturers from charging subscription fees for things like heated seats built into the vehicle. However, the statement would not apply to entertainment subscriptions like Sirius XM Radio.

The California New Car Dealers Association sponsored the bill. The group’s president,

Brian Maas, said he is open to amendments to clarify that overthe-air safety fixes are allowed.

“If it has to do with safety, and the manufacturer is not charging the customer, no problem, update the software over the air. But if it’s a feature that isn’t related to safety and they want to charge for it, the consumer should pay for that upfront when they buy the car,” he said.

The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, a manufacturers’ trade group, said, “By prohibiting manufacturers from offering consumers subscription services for

vehicle features, this bill limits consumer choice, stifles innovation, increases costs to consumers, and negatively impacts used car buyers.”

Shahan noted that car dealers are sponsoring similar legislation in multiple states. The bill’s author, Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar Curry, has yet to respond to a request for comment.

A FIRE & MAYPOLE AS THE LORD OF UNDERWORLD GOES UNDERGROUND

We are almost midway between spring and summer. The Sun is in Taurus, a time when we seek solace, refuge, comfort and the Art of Living. Both Mercury (retrograde) and Uranus (sudden changes) are also in Taurus. It’s a complicated time for humanity. Holding onto the past as it falls away. Not yet knowing the future. In the meantime, we celebrate Beltane (cross quarter day, May 1) and notice that Pluto is stationing retrograde.

Beltane is an ancient Celtic festival celebrated on May 1 (which is also May Day). Beltane informs us we are now between (Taurus solar midpoint) Spring equinox & Summer solstice. In the Catholic Church Mary, Queen of the May, is crowned. There are also bonfires (purification) and dancing around the Maypole. This is about weaving a pattern of life, growth and fertility in the community. Dressing the tree in ribbons of color, musicians play joyful spring music, everyone dancing, playing, singing and merrymaking.

May baskets are made filled with flowers, green branches, sweets, breads and packets of seeds. In Hawaii, May 1 is called Lei Day, garlands of flowers and leaves are made and given away in the spirit of aloha. May Day is a day to go barefoot in the morning dew. Beekeepers move their bees on May Day.

Pluto, Lord of the Underworld, the volcanic force that transforms us, retrogrades on May day at 0.22 Aquarius. Pluto will be in the underworld ‘till October 10, returning to 28 degrees Capricorn. Pluto re-enters Capricorn June 12. As Pluto retrogrades, we move into deeper layers of awareness. Certain areas of our lives turn inward for assessment,

RISA’S STARS

reorganization and transformation. The question becomes how are we being transformed? With Pluto retrograde areas of life fall away, some things linger in shadows, some things rise up into the light. Pluto gives us a rare window into ourselves.

The talk today about halting AI is part of the Pluto in Aquarius turning retrograde. During the retrograde issues of birth, death and rebirth are considered. Pluto was last in Aquarius during the 18th Century, from 1778 to 1798. What happened during those years so long ago? From that research we get a glimpse of the issues that may appear in our present world too. Before the 18th century, Pluto was in Aquarius during the Holy Roman Empire. Pluto circles the zodiac every 246 years. Pluto is not subtle!

ARIES: A time of great change has arrived. You will find yourself breaking with the past, attempting new endeavors and different ways of presenting yourself to the world. However, as you do so, realize we have three weeks of Mercury retrograde. The past blends with the present and they both seek the future. Everything must be discerned for what is real. All relationships will also shift and change, take on different hues, meaning everything becomes unconventional. Including your appearance. Revel in all of it.

TAURUS: Someone or something is asking you to adopt a different value system, one that is not your usual and regular way of being. You resist (as you should, giving time for research and evaluation). Look deeply into all new ideas presented. The new era is a completely unknown. It’s a good idea to ponder what the new era means; what

humanity needs at this time. The old ways are in the way, everywhere. They are falling down at the blink of an eye. There must be a clearing for the new Age to unfold. You are one of its thought leaders.

GEMINI: Be very aware that Mercury is retrograde at the moment. Mercury is your teacher, mentor, friend and healer. It’s your Soul and Spirit. Mercury is your angel and protector. Mercury and Venus work together. Mercury is retrograde now. Venus will retrograde the last week in July for forty days. Everything you thought you felt and knew will change. Anything you think, you must review and assess with a clear mind. For now, experiment. Everything’s magic in Mercury retrograde. Let it captivate you.

CANCER: Amidst a sudden decision to travel, have an adventure, go on a journey, you realize you’re seeking a paradise, utopia, a heaven, a dreamland, a community, a new way of life with like-minded people. Not for you the conventional path, customs and traditions. These are being set aside for new independent ideas and exotic places that reflect advanced ways of living and thinking. It’s an experiment. Research and caution are advised. What is your happiness goal?

LEO: Do you sense money, finances, investments and legal issues affecting your life are becoming a bit out of control. Do you also feel at a loss as to what to do? Your keen intuition is telling you to keep track of all market ups and downs and to realize sudden changes may occur in business and banking and also in relationship interactions. What is there to hold onto? A suggestion that is important for the future - invest in gold and silver as soon as possible. As much as you can.

VIRGO: With Saturn in Pisces, Virgo can feel quite free. Some Virgo’s may unexpectedly marry without much thought. Some will divorce with even less thought. Other Virgos will be aware that unusual realities may occur within relationships - erratic behaviors, independence, major upsets and unexpected fluctuations of emotion. All things are upside down inside out during retrogrades. Some Virgos will take all this in stride. It’s the astrological Virgos who will. They understand and remain poised.

LIBRA: Your daily work environment, routines, schedules and also your health may shift, become unpredictable moving toward the irregular. Think of it a creative, a time of opportunity. Some Librans love this for it allows for more freedom. Others need the structure of reliable and regular agendas imposed upon them. You might become angry, impatient, anxious and nervous. Careful with health. You sometimes learn the hard way. Through loss and suffering. Gather around your beloveds.

SCORPIO: You’re imaginative, ingenious, resourceful, inventive and creative. At times you sense the need for a bit more self-control. You learn this eventually. Self-knowledge sometimes comes through being reckless and foolhardy. Are you this way with relationships, perhaps? You want now most of all freedom and independence. How do these needs affect your relationships, co-workers, family and/or children? How are you using all your talents and skills?

SAGITTARIUS: Perhaps there will be a change to your home life, to the environments you live and/or work in. You want freedom to experiment, to journey forth, to come and go at will

(from home and work). You want different and unusual living conditions. Although you love family traditions, they may feel counter to your needs at this time. The foundations of your entire life feel unreliable and changeable. This persists. It’s difficult but it is, in the long run, good. The new era will be everything we never expected it to be.

CAPRICORN: Your thinking and communicating, over time, have become filled with qualities of leadership, right thinking, right reasoning, and thus quite revolutionary. Gradually, or spontaneously, or unexpectedly (Uranuian words) you become involved in advanced, new thought thinking, the Wisdom Teachings. The foundation of these teachings is astrology, the 7th Art. Very few may think like you. A sense of aloneness develops until you find your group. Off you go, at a moment’s notice to discover it! Mercury will lead the way.

AQUARIUS: When Aquarians hear of someone in need, their heart opens and they often say, “How can I help you?” Are you able to say and do this yet? In the esoteric Ageless Wisdom teachings the disciple task is to always “see the need” and then to assist in filling that need however they can. In this way the Aquarian task of serving others (humanity) is always on the forefront of a disciple’s consciousness. When one serves others, one is, in turn, also always “served.” What we offer is returned to us ten-fold. How do you serve?

PISCES: Most think of Pisces as a quiet shy fish hiding behind ferns, a subtle, other worldly being surrounded by mists and veils. But there comes a time when Pisces emerges from the Neptunian waters and becomes a warrior, like St. Michael, holding a fiery sword, leading humanity into battle in order to save the world. This archetype of warrior with a fiery sword comes alive in all Pisces soon as darkness threatens to engulf the world. These words are offered as preparation for all Pisces to understand.

Already an Active Legislative Year For HOAs (first in a 2-part series)

After a few quiet years in Sacramento regarding HOAs, California’s legislature is quite active this year with at least 8 bills proposing to affect HOAs in 2024. Four are helpful and four are not. Today’s column will address the first four that are helpful, and the other four will follow next week.

A perennial problem for HOAs is a lack of membership participation preventing board elections. Many associations have elections canceled year after year due to the failure to have the minimum number of members participating (“quorum”). A recurring and incorrect urban legend is that an obscure Corporations Code statute allowed HOAs to reduce their quorum to a lower number if the first attempt failed. Some HOAs try to amend their bylaws to establish a lower quorum, but even that amendment vote requires a minimum quorum to pass.

Assembly Bill 1458, authored by Assemblyperson Ta of Westminster, would make a simple but important change, allowing HOAs to use a quorum of 20% for the next attempted election if the first board election meeting failed for insufficient participation. This reduction in quorum only would apply to board elections and no other membership vote decisions.

Assembly Bill 648 would, if passed, allow HOAs to have purely virtual or telephonic meetings without having a physical location announced for those not wishing to participate virtually or telephonically. The bill, authored by Assemblyperson Valencia of Anaheim, would require that any board votes must be by roll call vote and clear instructions for participation be provided. Only board meetings could be purely virtual or telephonic. This expands the present law, which allows purely virtual board or membership meetings only when a declared emergency makes a physical meeting unsafe or impossible.

California law allows a property owner to execute a “revocable transfer on death deed” to allow someone to transfer a residence upon death without a trust or probate proceeding. Stock cooperatives were excluded from this law because their members have shares of stock, not deeds.

Assembly Bill 288, authored by Assemblyperson Maienschein of North San Diego County, adopts California Law Revision Commission recommendations. The bill would allow owners of stock cooperative homes to also execute revocable transfer on death “deeds” to transfer that share of stock (and therefore the home) to someone without a trust or probate proceeding.

Civil Code 5551, enacted in 2020, requires all HOAs to have visual inspections of exterior elevated elements within the HOA’s maintenance

or repair responsibility. The inspection must be by a licensed structural engineer or architect, and the first inspection must occur by the end of 2024.

Assembly Bill 1101, authored by Assemblyperson Flora of the San Joaquin Valley, would add a third allowable inspector as an option, a Branch 3 registered pest control company. “Branch 3” licenses are regarding destruction of wood by pests or organisms and require 100 training hours training (80 which is field work) and a test to obtain, per California Regulations Title 16 Section 1937. This would make Civil Code 5551 inspections easier and less expensive for HOAs to obtain.

June 2, 2023 is the deadline for bills to pass their initial

house of origin, so there is time to contact your representative and voice your opinions. Visit www.leginfo.legislature. ca.gov to read the bills.

MUSIC

Coachella 2023

Continued from Page 1

enthusiasts in their outlandish or “barely there” outfits.

More than 150 music acts from around the world performed in Indio on nine stages. Below is an overview of our experience.

Lewis OfMan - The French electronic musician, a collaborator on Carly Rae Jepsen’s recent hit “Move Me,” delved into house, drum and bass and Italian disco on his 2022 debut album Sonic Poems. Clad in a white jacket and partially transparent pants, Lewis OfMan proved to be quite a character while playing songs from it Friday in the Mojave Tent. The delightful, high-energy set saw him quickly switch between synth and keyboard on “Such a Good Day” (adding a snippet of Daft Punk’s “One More Time”), emerge from behind the instruments to do some pitch shifting vocals during “Dancy Girl” and then jog and shake his booty amid a festive “Las Banistas.” GP

Gabriels – Over at the Gobi Tent, this SoCal-based soul trio brought some spirituality to the desert. Lead singer Jacob Lusk - a top 5 American Idol finalist in 2011 - admitted to being nervous and advised people not to wear new shoes to a festival (no mention of his white suit though). Before doing a gospel song, he also urged the crowd to spread the love. Then Lusk was in full-on falsetto mode on the jazz-tinged “Professional” from Gabriels’ upcoming album and nicely segued into the Barbra Streisand-popularized “The Way We Were.” GP

BENEE – Talk about exuberant. The young New Zealand Tik Tok star pogoed as she sang rap-inflected alt-pop tunes like “Green Honda” and “Sports Mode” with attitude aplenty at a packed Mojave. GP

MUNA – Among several great LGBTQ+ artists this writer

caught at the festival, the LA trio prompted loud cheers from the minute they took the stage to a large Mojave crowd. Scantily dressed lead singer Katie Gavin was a riveting presence as she traversed the stage and did bump ‘n’ grind moves during scintillating synth pop tunes like “What I Want” and “Number

One Fan.” The other members provided strong backing vocals during “Stay Away” (reminiscent of CHVRCHES) and a moodier

“Runner’s High” contained a NIN-style section. MUNA finished with enthusiastic hit “Silk Chiffon” with label boss Phoebe Bridgers of boygenius guesting. GP

Wet Leg — British indie rock duo Wet Leg (featuring singer-guitarists Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers) had a blast throughout their 40-minute late afternoon set Friday in the Mojave Tent. In fact, several times during the performance of “Too Late Now” Teasdale started laughing uncontrollably, obviously immersed in the moment. Wet Leg’s super catchy New Wave-flavored indie rock was performed with an infectious energy that had concertgoers packed in the tent moving and responding to invitations to sing along. The opener “Being in Love,” indie hit “Wet Dream” and ambitious “Obvious” (the latter with its Mazzy Star-flavored intro) were among the wonderful songs unleashed. Foo Fighters leader Dave Grohl even joined in the fun during “Ur Mum,” where he joined the band and crowd for an extremely loud and extended scream. During their closing hit “Chaise Lounge,” drummer Henry Holmes helped propel the favorite to new heights with his hard-hitting style. RK Burna Boy — Afro-fusion artist Burna Boy led a large ensemble of backing singers and musicians — including a great horn section — for an intoxicating Friday set on the Coachella Stage. The Nigerian

artist and company artfully blended soul, reggae, R&B, and world music across a masterful set. He closed his 50-minute appearance with a moving take on the anthemic “Last Last.” RK Blondie – The influential 1970s pop/rock band fronted by a still feisty Debbie Harry, 77, drew an overflow crowd to Mojave. Launching with a supercharged “One Way or Another” - included on last year’s exceptional career spanning box set Against the Odds: 1974-1982 – the group hit all the bases on Friday night with such hits as “Rapture,”

“The Tide is High,” “Call Me” and “Heart of Glass.” GP Gorillaz – Those who caught the Damon Albarnfronted collective on the Coachella Stage on Friday were treated to a parade of bona fide surprises. Indeed, when Albarn declared early in the set that “Weekend 2 is better than Weekend 1,” he wasn’t kidding. Beck, Little Simz, Thundercat, Bootie Brown and Bad Bunny — were among the high-profile guests who made notable appearances during the

Morongo Welcomes Legendary Soul Singer Peabo Bryson

RESORT & SPA – Two-time Grammy Award-winning singer Peabo Bryson will bring his timeless R&B and soul hits to the Morongo Grand Ballroom for an exclusive Southern California performance on Saturday, May 6.

Bryson’s musical career began in the 1960s when he performed with local bands in his hometown of Greenville, South Carolina. His 1977 debut album, “Reaching for the Sky,”

included the hit single “Feel the Fire,” which earned him his first Grammy nomination.

In 1991, Bryson earned worldwide recognition from his collaboration with popstar Celine Dion on the title song for Disney’s animated classic, “Beauty and the Beast,” which earned him his first Grammy Award. Bryson added another iconic duet a year later with the Grammy Award-winning “A Whole New World” with Regina Belle for the Disney film “Aladdin.”

“With 20 studio albums, dozens of hit songs, eight Grammy nominations, two Oscar-winning songs, and two Grammys Awards, Peabo Bryson is a legendary performer, and we are excited to host him for an exclusive Southern California performance,” said Simon Farmer, Morongo’s Executive Director of Marketing.

Over the years, Bryson hit songs including “Feel the Fire,” “Reaching for the Sky,” “I’m So into You,” “Let the Feeling Flow,” and “If Ever You’re in My Arms

virtual band’s 75-minute set. Highlights of the outing included the aforementioned Beck joining Damon for an energy filled “The Valley of the Pagans,” a killer run through the winning title track (“Thunder Island”) from the latest Gorillaz album with guest Thundercat, the powerful and timely “Kids with Guns” and shimmering “New Gold” (the latter featuring Brown). Gorillaz’ best-known material capped the set, with De La Soul joining the fun for a spirited take on “Feel Good Inc.” and Del the Funky Homosapien sharing the stage for “Clint Eastwood.” RK

After an action-packed Friday, heading back to Empire Polo Field when gates opened on Saturday was difficult, but necessary. New discoveries are often found within the

undercard acts performing in the early afternoon. While walking to another stage, the exotic sounds from Israeli-born female singer Elyanna, who sings in Arabic, were enticing. GP Horsegirl – This female indie rock trio from Chicago took awhile to gain momentum in the Sonora Tent, but definitely impressed with an intense, feedback-laden “Option 8” as well as some angular guitar work on “Anti-Glory.” GP Bratty — Culiacán, Sinaloa native Jenny Juárez, 22, brought her bedroom popmeets-garage rock project to Sonora. Singing in Spanish, her catchy rock style and obvious strengths as a singer and rhythm guitarist were obvious throughout

MSWD Wins State & Regional Wastewater Awards

During an awards ceremony hosted by the California Water EnvironmentAssociation (CWEA), Mission Springs Water District took home top State honors for the District’s Protect your Pipes Community Engagement and Outreach campaign and finished second place for Plant Operations at the Alan L. Horton Wastewater Treatment Facility.

“The most significant outcome of the outreach campaign includes the culture shift inside our organization,” said Government and Public Affairs Manager Marion Champion, who oversaw the campaign. “Employees across the District are helping to spread the word about the problems socalled flushable wipes and fats, oil, and grease pose to the wastewater system. This sentiment can be found at all levels—from our Board of Directors down to our field staff— our

entire workforce is helping to spread the word.”

Earlier in the month, during the CWEA regional competition (Colorado River Basin Section), MSWD was awarded: Small Plant of the Year for operations at the Alan L. Horton Plant Wastewater Treatment Facility.

MSWD’s Chief Plant Operator, Lee Boyer, was named Plant Supervisor of the Year, Community Engagement and Outreach Campaign for the Protect Your Pipes Campaign reminding residents to keep flushable wipes and Fats, Oils, and Grease out of the wastewater system.

“MSWD was the only wastewater provider to win three awards during the regional competition,” added Champion. “This is a testament to our wastewater team’s hard work and dedication.”

Founded in 1928, CWEA unites wastewater professionals throughout the state. Together they

address real-time issues, develop and deliver cutting-edge training, raise awareness of the profession, and shape the future of wastewater.

If you have pets that enjoy spending time outdoors, ensuring your yard is safe for them to be in is essential.

Consider these hazards that can negatively impact the well-being of your furry friends.

Poisonous Plants: Some common plants can be dangerous for animals, causing anything from mild oral irritations and upset stomachs to cardiovascular damage and even death. For example, these are some of the toxic plants the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has identified as harmful to either cats or dogs:

* Aloe - can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, anorexia, and depression

* Azalea - can cause vomiting, diarrhea, hypersalivation, weakness, coma, cardiovascular collapse, and death

* Burning bush - can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and weakness, as well as heart rhythm abnormalities with large doses

* Caladium - can cause burning and irritation of the mouth, tongue, and lips, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing

* Daylilies - can cause kidney failure in cats

* Hibiscus - can cause vomiting, diarrhea,

nausea, and anorexia

Mulch and Compost: The decomposing elements that make compost good can be bad for pets, according to the National Garden Society. Keep compost in a secure container or fenced-off area so pets can’t get to it. Cocoa mulch can be a particular problem for dogs. A byproduct of chocolate production, cocoa mulch can cause digestive issues and even seizures in dogs. Shredded pine or cedar mulch is a safer choice.

Fertilizer and Insecticides - The chemicals used to eliminate pests or make your lawn lush can be toxic to pets. Some of

the most dangerous pesticides include snail bait with metaldehyde, fly bait with methomyl, systemic insecticides with disyston or disulfoton, mole or gopher bait with zinc phosphide, and most forms of rat poison, according to the ASPCA. Follow all instructions carefully, and store pesticides and fertilizers in a secure area out of the reach of animals.

Fleas and Ticks: Besides using appropriate flea and tick prevention methods such as collars

and sprays, ensure your yard isn’t a welcoming environment for these pests. Keep the lawn trimmed and remove brush and detritus, where fleas and ticks often lurk. Fleas can cause hair loss, scabs, excessive scratching, tapeworms, and anemia. Ticks can do all that, plus bring you and your family in contact with diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease. Palm Desert’s Temple Sinai School Celebrates Earth Day

Each year April 22 is celebrated as Earth Day.

On Earth Day, events around the world are used to help teach people how they can help our planet. It has been reported that over 193 countries, and 1 billion people, participate each year to help the environment.

Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22,

1970. It began when the Senator from Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson, suggested that April 22 be used for an environmental education day. It is estimated that around 20 million people in the United States participated on that first day.

The Hebrew Bible mentions two commandments related to the environment: 1)

among such great heroic people. She has been a big help to Well in the Desert and many others here in our Valley.

I talked with Matt Naylor about Well in the Desert and some volunteer work there. They provide meals to anywhere from 200 to 400 homeless DAILY.

Since they were removed from Palm Springs, they are affiliated with four churches where they make and serve these meals. Monday and Tuesday’s meals are at United Methodist Church. Wednesday’s meals are at the Church of St. Pauls and Thursdays at Our Lady of Solitude. Fridays can find the homeless being served meals at Our Lady of Guadalupe. 200 to 400 meals daily is a huge task. However, many Honless have cell phones and are like a small community that helps each other find food and help. Thanks go to these churches for stepping up where needed. Saturdays, they have a food distribution at 181 N. Indian Canyon from 6 to 7 and 10 to 11 am. They offer emergency food assistance and weekly supplement foods. Well in the Desert also provides services to those affected by poverty, the working poor, the Homeless, seniors, veterans, people with disabilities, and

others in the Coachella Valley. They also have programs for poverty prevention and more. They give out clothing and other necessities that are donated. Donations can now be made to these churches. They still need a place for showers and cooling and heating stations.

Well, the Desert has been around for years. They have accomplished so much to help the Homeless and those in need. They view everyone as a person who should be treated with dignity and compassion. They show love and are thanked daily for all the help they provide.’ Matt Naylor is an accomplished musician and, before covid, was giving free piano lessons to needy children. He wrote a song about the homeless, and Jeannie Cunningham sang it. Loud clapping and cheering said they loved it.

Nadler said he had written a musical about Homelessness. It will be performed in Sept or Oct at a future stage in Palm Springs. The date is yet to be determined. I will be looking forward to seeing that.

The performances by Jamie Chamberlin, Nathan Granner, and Cedric Berry brought huge applause after each song. These 3 are well-known award-winning Opera stars that have great careers in Opera.

the world, and 2) Bal Tashchit – do not destroy.

On Sunday, April 23rd, 2023, Palm Desert’s Temple Sinai Religious School held an Earth Day celebration. The students learned about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP), the largest of 5 offshore plastic accumulation zones in the world’s oceans. It is located between Hawaii and California. It covers

an estimated surface area of about 620,000 sqm, twice the size of Texas or three times that of France. About 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic in the patch weigh 80,000 tons. Marine animals, such as fish, turtles, birds, and even whales, consume plastic in their digestive system, causing lacerations, infections, reduced ability to swim, and internal injuries. These

lead to the animals’ death. The celebration emphasized to the students our renewed commitment to the earth. It allowed them to take on responsibility for environmental awareness and learn what each of us can do to help: recycle and switch to reusable grocery bags, water containers, and cups. Ease Back into Exercise: The change in weather means more time for outdoor adventures with your pets, but remember to cool down and warm up as you and your pets ease into the season. Planning for short, leashed walks and timed play sessions can help your pets gradually prepare their hips and joints for fun, warmweather activities.

the best routine and products for your pets.

Freshen Up Bedding and Bowls: Keeping a clean environment by scrubbing, sweeping, and vacuuming regularly to decrease allergens in the home is essential. When tackling this year’s spring cleaning, remember to put your pets’ bedding and bowls on the list, too. Updating or disinfecting your pets’ blankets, litter boxes, toys, and other supplies is an excellent way to keep them feeling safe and comfortable in the home.

By Desert Star Staff Warmer weather means it’s time to spring clean, get grooming, and prepare your pets’ diets to support them through the season.

Keep your furry friends happy and healthy this spring with these six tips from the experts at Zesty Paws, an award-winning pet supplement brand: Give Skin and Coats a Little TLC: Many pets form winter coats during the colder months to help them stay warm and comfortable, then shed the coats in the spring to prepare for warmer temperatures. However, some pets may need extra help

maintaining their shiny, healthy coats, mainly if mats have formed in their fur or are breeds that develop thick undercoats.

Professional grooming, at-home brushing, and regular bathing can all be helpful ways to speed up the process of removing some of the extra furs and decrease the prevalence of dander, dust, and pollen that can attach to coat and skin through the season.

Add Seasonal Allergy Support with Supplements: Furry friends can also develop and experience seasonal allergies like humans. Giving your pets’ immune systems some extra

support can help ease some common allergy symptoms. Supplements like Zesty Paws AllerImmune Bites for Cats

Watch Out for Pet Pests: Little, creepy critters start crawling once temperatures rise. Fleas, ticks, and other pests can cause serious pet health concerns. This spring, ensure your pest control programs are primed and ready for added protection. Talk to your veterinarian about

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. her set. The charismatic artist is definitely one to watch. RK

Snail Mail – The breezy alt-pop of Maryland’s Lindsey Jordan went down easy in the Mojave Tent. In striking contrast to her frequently frank lyrics, Jordan’s between song banter veered from giddy (obviously happy to be at Coachella) and surprising (chastising rude onsite security) to funny (getting lost trying to walk to a nearby hotel). Sometimes recalling Juliana Hatfield, the best moments in the set came from 2021’s Valentine: The synth-laden “Ben Franklin,” a more aggressive “Glory” and “Forever (Sailing),” where Jordan encouraged fans to continue tossing beach balls around and even kicked one herself. GP

Ethel Cain — Singersongwriter Ethel Cain’s riveting performance in the Sonora Tent was among the best performances on Saturday. Armed with a voice that is as emotionally detailed as it is beautiful, Cain delivered a seven-song set highlighted by the heavy “Family Tree,” rootsy “Thoroughfare” (the latter featuring Cain’s great harmonica work), a brooding “Gibson Girl” and dramatic closer “Crush.” RK

Sofi Tukker — Florida duo Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern — attracted a massive crowd to the Outdoor Theatre on Saturday. Halpern took the stage and asked: “Coachella!... Are we ready?”

Almost instantly, the large grass field was transformed into a gigantic dance floor with thousands of Coachellagoers moving to the undeniable groove of the duo’s 2015 single “Drinkee.” The momentum of their 55-minute outing seemed to gain sway by the minute. A creative stage setup with curved monkey bars (that doubled as a percussive instrument), a swing made from vines utilized by Hawley Weld on “Matadora” and exciting dance troupe

known as Bob’s Dance Shop collectively amplified the rush. Standouts included “Sacrifice,” showcasing Hawley-Weld’s beautiful vocals, the Latin-mining “Jacaré,” catchy “Batshit” (the latter featuring Hawley-Weld’s flashy lead guitar work) and rapid-fire closer “Purple Hat.” RK

Just before BLACKPINK performed, a dazzling 8-minute drone show by Skymagic paid tribute to past Coachella art installations.

Christine and the Queens - On Sunday evening, this European electropop act put on a totally unique and captivating performance in the Mojave Tent. Emerging with angel’s wings attached to his back, singer Chris mixed French and English vocals with some interpretive dance, spoken word and deeply personal lyrics about identity, family dynamics and romance. The Massive Attack-styled music was sparse and haunting.

Set standouts included “People, I’ve Been Sad,” “Tears Can Be So Soft” and “Tilted,” which deftly incorporated Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Under the Bridge” – first as an acoustic guitar intro and then woven into the song’s midsection. GP Blink-182 – A little over halfway through the veteran punk-pop band’s invigorating 18song set on the Coachella Stage, singer/bassist Mark Hoppus said, “We’ve all been through so much the past few years. I found out I had cancer and now I’m here with you tonight. Music brings us all together. Thank you for being here.” Despite that bit of reality, the tenor of the band’s performance adhered to

the teen/young adult angst and potty humor that first made them alt-rock superstars in the late 1990s. With singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge finally back in the fold since last fall, Coachella Weekend 1 marked his first full live gig with Blink in nine years. Bolstered by fireworks, onstage fire plumes, great backdrop visuals and solid sound, the trio’s cavalcade of hits spanned from the earliest (“Dammit,” with a Skee Lo nod) to most recent (“Edging”). In between, came such radio staples as “What’s My Age Again,” “All the Small Things,” “The Rock Show,” “Down” and “First Date,” complete with a quick Ramones intro tribute. GP
