CAP The thimble, so readily associated with our grandmas, became an inspiration for a line of seats. Their simple shape, lightness and mobile nature make it easy to create a meeting spot. The felt poufs grouped together look like a purposeful installation or an element of decoration. The bottom ring surrounding the seats is available in five different colours. On request. www.kinnarps.pl SZCZYTY POLSKI The peaks of Poland – Śnieżka, Rysy, Mnich, Giewont and Babia Góra – materialized in the stroke by Alicja Woźnikowska–Woźniak, a founder of Dinksy studio, and manufactured by Fifi Studio, which specializes in child space accessories. The most famous Polish mountains were also turned into traditional cushions, but we like best those which were cut out in the form of the individual peaks. www.fifistudio.pl NIEMAPA An illustrated guide to Łódź. Funny drawings by Maciek Błaźniak from Ładne Halo studio will please anyone, though the publication is intended for children. Beside a marked route, it also contains games and ideas for spending free time. The originators, Małgorzata Żmijska and Joanna Guszta, are not only young, ambitious mothers, but also enthusiasts of Łódź. www.facebook.com/nieMAPA.Lodz BIO By Łukasz Jaworski for Nowodvorski. An openwork plywood lamp displays an interesting game with light diffused on the surface of the arms. www.nowodvorski.com SWITCH A multifunctional sleeping bag. Pajak Sport surprises everyone again with the solutions introduced in its products: not only is the bag light (it weighs only 550 g) and filled with highest-quality goose down, but it can also cover two tourists, among other things. The special holes enable the user to put the hands out or even walk... in the bag, of course. www.pajaksport.pl

The hypoallergenic materials were produced in Poland using natural and ecological methods. www.thisisnon.com DZIUPLA (Polish: tree hollow) is a modular nesting box made of plywood and pine planks, intended for city birds. Owing to its shape, it can be installed in various locations and positions; a group of such boxes can form spatial sculptures. This design brought Menthol Architects, i.e. a duet formed by Lila Krzycka and Rafał Pieszko, a distinction granted (also by Design Alive) in Make Me! contest held during this year’s edition of Łódź Design Festival. A prototype with the possibility of implementation. www.menthol.pl

COSMETICS by tołpa are becoming upscale without any fear of heights because there is no need for good cosmetics to cost a fortune. Usefulness and simplicity are the features of the newest line, created in cooperation with fashion designer Mariusz Przybylski. www.tolpa.pl PLANTATION The possibility of maintaining a visually beautiful plant crop. You put hand-made porcelain objects in any glass container (preferably one you no longer need). Then you place a selected rhizome, seed or tuber in them and watch the roots and the stalk grow. Turn the container upside down and you get a mini-greenhouse. www.patanowska.pl GLASS for city crops. Garden Glass by Aleksandra Kujawska is hand-made crystal mini-greenhouses intended for growing flowers, herbs and vegetables. They will satisfy the city dwellers’ need for being closer to nature. The collection offers containers in several sizes so that they can be grouped together in any way. www.aleksandrakujawska.pl

4/2016 A CHAIR developed by Stefan Brodbeck is the first case of that German designer’s cooperation with Kinnarps... which immediately earned him a distinction in iF Design Award contest. Embrace has a light form, but it can bear quite a few kilograms (we checked it!). Moreover, its subtle curves, smooth shape and various configuration possibilities make it easily adaptable to different spaces. www.kinnarps.pl A SUMMARY of “Polish Gothic” – an exhibition concerning Gothic style in Poland, which was held last year. Galeria Dizajn, a gallery of BWA Wrocław, published an album discussing the work of four Polish designers: Maldoror, oluhi, Paulina Plizga and Sylwia Rochala. Photographs, interviews and essays familiarize the readers with the style of this current, which is associated with Japanese deconstructionism, occult art, architecture of the Middle Ages, apocalyptic folk or even religious symbolism. www.bwa.wroc.pl A CLASSIC PIECE published anew. Owing to Karakter publishing house, the text by the Danish architect, urban planner and professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Steen Eiler Rasmussen, received a new look. The leitmotif in Experiencing Architecture is research concerning the interaction of architecture and senses. The analysis of the space is complemented by black and white photographs taken by the author himself. www.karakter.pl A STORY about the capital city of Poland told by a foreigner. Hidden modernism. Warsaw by Christian Kerez is a result of the Swiss architect’s long-term fascination with modernist buildings of communist Poland. That era, so often marginalized, enchanted the designer so much that he invited his students to experience its objects directly. The Museum of Modern Art was supposed to be the result of that fact because Kerez himself won a contest concerning its building design, but the project has not been carried out. www.karakter.pl AN ALBUM which is the first comprehensive publication on the 20th century graphic design, published by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute. Verygraphic. Polish Designers of the 20th Century, edited by Jacek Mrowczyk, presents 60 artists active in various areas (from magazine and book covers, through lettering, to identification signs and packages) grouped chronologically in three periods. The covers, designed by Kuba Sowiński, are made by hand in various versions. This is an English edition, but the authors are already planning a Polish one. www.culture.pl ESSAYS by Marcin Wicha: short, ironically humorous and with surprising punch lines. Jak przestałem kochać design, published by Karakter, shows the reader that industrial design sometimes touches us in the most unexpected moments, such as, for instance, when choosing an urn. Inseparable historical contexts and cultural references often become reasons for considering individual matters. www.karakter.pl SOCIALIST MODERNISM is the topic explored by the latest issue of Herito. This Polish-English quarterly founded by the International Cultural Centre is focused on the heritage and culture of Central Europe. The shameful aesthetics of people’s democracies is becoming fashionable again and this phenomenon has fascinated the editorial team so much that they prepared a double issue. It contains many interesting observations concerning Cracow, Tychy, Katowice, Skopje and other cities from the Eastern Bloc countries. www.herito.pl MEMORIES running along two ways. Wojciech Brzega’s tales revive the world of Polish mountain people, existence close to nature and the culture of the turn of the centuries. The other way is a study commenced by Anna Micińska and continued in the form of an essay by Wojciech Jagiełło and an album part by Helena Pitoń. The original edition from 1969 was issued anew by the Tatra National Park Publishing House and entitled Żywot górala poczciwego. Spojrzenie po latach. This book is intended not only for fans of the Zakopane region or the personality of that artist, craftsman, sculptor and designer all in one. www.tpn.pl

5/2016 AN ARMCHAIR named Deli, awarded Red Dot 2014 in “The Best of the Best” category. Kinnarps asked Thomas Pedersen to prepare a design: Deli was supposed to be comfortable, attractive and, preferably, making people... reluctant to get up. The organic shape of the armchair allows for easy combinations. It is perfect for rooms with little space. www.kinnarps.pl THE TABLE-LAMP is an idea well-known in the past, when everything was supposed to be multifunctional. 6/2016 A CUP designed and hand-made in Bogdan Kosak’s workshop in Cieszyn. As always, the ceramist meticulously perfects each item – and these are unique because they were ordered by the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. They are available in two colour versions. Limited edition. www.ceramikakosak.pl, www.nospr.org.pl JIMEK X NOSPR X MIUOSH is another piece of work showing that valuable architecture can coexist with music. Silesia is proud of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra seat, which invites increasingly interesting projects within its walls. Radzimir Dębski, better known as Jimek, performed in Katowice with rapper Miuosh. The result is a CD and a DVD with recordings of the concerts. www.nospr.org.pl, www.miuosh-jimek.com A POCKET SQUARE A family-owned factory founded by Joanna Krajewska–Godziek, who chose men’s decorative handkerchiefs as her flagship product. She also offers bow ties, ties, socks and belts – men’s accessories at their best. They are sewed locally and in limited quantities. www.poszetka.com HEY W FILHARMONII SZCZECIŃSKIEJ The title (“Hey in the Szczecin Philharmonic Hall”) says it all. A concert recorded to celebrate the band’s 25th anniversary was organized owing to cooperation with musicians forming an orchestra whose daily work takes place in a building that has won Mies van der Rohe Prize this year. Acoustic sounds were recorded on a CD which can be a souvenir for fans of Kasia Nosowska’s voice, her band and the fantastically designed Szczecin building alike. www.filharmonia.szczecin.pl, www.hey.pl

7/2016 A CLOUD made of hypoallergenic polyester fibre is actually a lamp made in Richard Clarkson’s studio in Canada. Tiny Cloud has a built-in system of speakers, lightning-imitating lights and the possibility of music transfer; it can also change colours. It went a long way to reach us and be hung over the flowery greenery. www.richardclarkson.com VASES designed by Agnieszka Bar for Manufactured Culture. Plisowanki is a duet of crystal vessels differing in colour and decorations, which can function both separately and together. The larger transparent form is decorated with a thick wedge-like cut, which makes plant stalks visually dematerialized. The other object, distinguished by the orange colour, has grooves only on the top part – the bottom one is a smoothly rounded vessel. The pleat-like pattern is hand-made. We have left the vases perversely empty to let the surrounding flowers speak. www.manufacturedculture.com, www.agnieszkabar.pl

A BELL-LAMP inspired by shepherds’ tales about various functions and shapes of the bells put around the necks of sheep. Its designers, Ewa Bochen and Maciej Jelski from Kosmos studio, combined ash wood with hot-formed felt. The object was made within a project entitled “Wool Design. Carpathians”, coordinated by the Cieszyn Castle and financed by the Visegrad Fund. www.kosmosproject.com, www.zamekcieszyn.pl WOOFER is not only an intriguing object: it is a sound absorber. It is filled with needle-punched acoustic non-woven fabric, wrapped up in traditionally woven wool manufactured by a factory in Bielsko–Biała (one of the last to deal with this kind of textiles). Moreover, Maja Ganszyniec and Marta Morawska from Studio Ganszyniec used a metal frame and wooden elements. The object was made within a project entitled “Wool Design. Carpathians”, coordinated by the Cieszyn Castle and financed by the Visegrad Fund. www.studioganszyniec.com, www.zamekcieszyn.pl A STOOL by Paweł Pomorski and Agata Kulik–Pomorska, i.e. Malafor studio. Vertical is one of three items from the newest collection called Air, which continues the studio’s adventure with inflated furniture that began a few years ago. CLOTHING by a young brand Kids on the Moon. The collection, intended for spring and summer, combines ocean depths with the world of the Moon and the grunge culture. Two most distant worlds – the ocean bottom and the cosmic sky – meet in these shaded textile designs. Our models liked the collection so much that they decided to test it such extraordinary situations as... climbing a tree. And it passed with flying colours! www.kidsonthemoon.com

A BOW TIE by Sieger, a German textile brand. A characteristic feature of the star-branded products is the combination of many colours which are often untypical, but certainly add variety to every man’s wardrobe. www.sieger-germany.com AN ELK by Agnieszka Bar is a reinterpretation of a hunter’s trophy. My Dear gives a new meaning to the phrase “to take the bull by the horns”: this object is a glass vase to be hung on the wall. 11/2016 A LAMP using LEDs to make plants grow. Bulbo, an Italian brand, combined colourful illuminations of selected light frequencies to recreate the spectrum of photosynthesis. This cold frame for home use allows you to observe every growth stage of your flora. www.bulbolight.com A BIOGRAPHY and a history of friendship between two architects of genius: Bohdan Lachert and Józef Szanajca. Beata Chomątowska discusses their activity in a publication entitled Lachert i Szanajca. Architekci awangardy issued by Czarne publishing house. The background of the story features echoes of Le Corbusier, the birth of Polish avant-garde and ideas of Praesens group, all of them enclosed in the historical and political context. www.czarne.com.pl A SELECTION by Deyan Sudjic. B Is for Bauhaus: An A-Z of the Modern World, issued by Karakter publishing house from Cracow, is a subjective portrait of objects creating the contemporary world. This selection was made by the British design guru – the director of the Design Museum in London. It gives the reader fun, contains self-irony and, most importantly, is inquisitive. www.karakter.pl AN ALBUM entitled Henryk Tomaszewski, issued to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the artist’s birthday. Its 368 pages present over 700 pictures, thus gathering all the preserved ones and those which are known to have existed, though they did not survive. The album additionally contains the artist’s timeline, portfolio, project bibliography and articles by i.a. Piotr Rypson. www.zacheta.art.pl, www.bosz.com.pl AN OVERVIEW of the most interesting buildings which allow for an escape to nature. Hide and Seek. The Architecture of Cabins and Hide-Outs, issued by Gestalten, contains several ideas from all over the world such as minimalist and yet cosy houses, holiday houses, cabins, shelters and hostels. They are all worth seeing, even if just on paper. www.shop.gestalten.com FURNITURE designed by Agata Matlak–Lutyk and Jan Lutyk. Doge is a set consisting of a bar stool and a table; it “furnished” the stand of Poland’s capital city at an international real estate trade fair. BIO Łukasz Jaworski prepared two types of lamps with openwork shades. We present the slimmer one, in a natural version, in which the plywood is raw. www.nowodvorski.com DYNKS by Tabanda – a design trio from the Polish Pomerania region. We have known for years that they cannot imagine life without plywood. This creative bookshelf allows for various configurations and thus for adjusting the item to the user’s needs. The plywood modules are joined in a simple way using intelligent all-round (“dynks”) screws. Available in several colour versions. www.tabanda.pl VICE CLOCK by Bartosz Mucha indeed resembles a vice. Its wooden body is supplemented with bright-coloured small elements. NUT CRACKER is a cubic item with a self-explanatory name, while DESK ORGANIZER consists of an L-shaped solid embraced by a bent piece of sheet metal. These simple and funny accessories are perfect for both home and office space. www.poor.pl FRANK LLYOD WRIGHT by Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer is a compendium of knowledge concerning the American architect. It contains rich illustrative material, thus ensuring that no project (whether carried out or not) is omitted. The album is quite a big book as it provides meticulously edited biographic information, too. Published by Taschen. www.taschen.com, www.tmc.com.pl ALFABET CIAST by Zofia Różycka. The talented illustrator collected cake recipes and arranged them alphabetically. Each recipe features tasty pictures or photographs. How about a lavender, Nutella or even bacon cake? You will find them all there: this book is a wide palette of unforgettable tastes. Published by Wydawnictwo Dwie Siostry. www.wydawnictwodwiesiostry.pl RYGALIK. Istota rzeczy is a catalogue containing all designs by Tomek Rygalik, which accompanies an exhibition opened during this year’s holidays that concerns the artist and the workshop he founded. This way, the Gdynia City Museum continues the cycle entitled “Polish Designs and Polish Designers”. www.studiorygalik.com, www.muzeumgdynia.pl Plica polonica Truly widespread in Poland in the old times, it has acquired a rather pejorative meaning. The contemporary narrow-mindedness, associated with the long forgotten habit and displayed in works by eminent artists, has become the topic of an exhibition in the Kronika Centre for Contemporary Art in Bytom. Articles, essays and photographs can also be viewed in an accompanying book published by CSW Kronika Bytom. www.kronika.org.pl DANI KARAVAN. THE ESSENCE OF PLACE is a catalogue of an exhibition held in the International Cultural Centre in Cracow. BON TON is a comic book telling the story of the Szczecin Philharmonic Hall. The adventures of a courageous castaway are presented to the youngest readers by graphic designer Ernesto Gonzales and storyteller Grzegorz Janusz. Dorota Serwa, the director of the institution and at the same time The Lady Who Ensures That Everything Goes All Right, is truly proud of the publication. This comic book is perfect for both children and older readers. www.filharmonia.szczecin.pl THIS WAR OF MINE is an extraordinary war game by Polish brand 11 Bit Studios. Its protagonist is not a soldier killing whatever comes his way: he is... a civilian trying to avoid danger. His goal is survival. However, to achieve this, he must make many moral choices. The game was inspired by the conflict in Sarajevo. www.11bitstudios.com
